Is there a Hard Drive Size Limitation when using Tiger?

Im going to be setting up a backup server that users can copy their working files to, so Im going to be installing 2 300gb hard drives on a G4 running tiger. I just want to be sure that there is not some hard drive size limitation with tiger.
Please let me know!!!

Welcome to Apple Discussions!
The size limitation is operating system independent. It has to do with the ATA bus on older machines which is discussed in more detail on this article:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86178
If you have a G4 tower that is older than the resolving of that limitation, you can add a PCI ATA card which supports larger hard drives, many of which are discussed in more detail on http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/
I'm not sure about sharing external hard drives, though the size limitation does not apply to new external hard drives purchased since that limitation was resolved with newer ATA buses.

  • K9A2 Platinum BIOS, are there any hard drive size limitations ?

I have a K9A2 Platinum system with version 1.10 of the AMI BIOS. Recently trying to re-initialize a Linux grub /boot partition which is near the end of my 2 TB hard drive I received the message:
"Error 18: Selected cylinder exceeds maximum supported by BIOS"
I see nothing in the AMI BIOS limiting the number of cylinders on any of my hard disks. Is there some setting in the BIOS I should be changing to fix this problem or is this just a legacy grub limitation ?

Up to 2TB should be fine,

  • Is there a hard drive size limit  that can be hooked to the airport extreme

I am trying to connect a 2TB HDD to my Airport Extreme but it doesn't see it. It is a Mac formatted drive I have been using as my backup drive but want to put it on the Airport Extreme to share some other stuff that's on it. When I hook in a 500GB drive it works just fine.
There are no windows machines (god forbid) that will share it, all Mac.
    Thanks!

    No.

  • Is there a hard drive size limit for G5 imacs?

I recently added a 1.5 TB firewire drive to my father's iMac. Since then the system has been hanging frequently and I have not been able to restart the machine remotely using either Timbuktu or ssh sudo reboot.
Is this drive too big for leopard to handle on the G5?

  • Does OS X 10.4.5 have a  Hard Drive Size Limitation in a PowerBook G4?

I just read about the new Seagate Momentus 5400.3 (Perpendicular Recording) 160GB 2.5" ATA-6 Notebook Hard Drive. It seems pretty cool the way it records and uses less space than standard hard drives.
My question is: In a PowerBook 12" 1.5 GHz PPC G4, running Tiger OS X 10.4.5, will it see the 160 GB HD? Will it see all, or most of it as calculated by Apple's OS? Or will it be restricted to a much lower number. I have a 100 GB Hard drive in it now and it is almost full (I have a few GB's left only) and I need the extra space. Anyone know if it will work as an internally installed replacement drive?
I know it is not supported, but I need the space. Thanks.

    PowerBook G4 12" 1.5 GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

It's not something in it, it is the way it handles data.
From the (Seagate) site: "To increase areal densities in longitudinal recording and boost overall storage capacity, the data bits must be shrunk and packed more closely together. However,if the bit becomes too small, the magnetic energy holding the bit in place may also become so smallthat thermal energy can cause it to demagnetize,a phenomenon known as superparamagnetism.
To avoid superparamagnetism, disc media manufacturers have been increasing the coercivity (the field required to write a bit) of the media. However, the fields that can be applied are limited by the magnetic materials making up the write head.In perpendicular recording, the magnetization of the disc, instead of lying in the disc’s plane as it does in longitudinal recording, stands on end, perpendicular to the plane of the disc. The bits are then represented as regions of upward- or downward-directed magnetization.
(In longitudinal recording, the bit magnetization lies in the plane of the disc and flips between pointing in the same and opposite directions of the head movement.) The media is deposited on a soft magnetic underlayer that functions as part of the write field return path and effectively produces an image of the recording head that doubles the recording field, enabling higherrecording density than with longitudinal recording."
I don't see how this can be something that is not able to be formatted by any system. All other drives are universal and can be formatted. It is the interface that changes.
An article on Seagates site states that other manufacturers are coming out with perpendicular drives. Can anyone think of a reason why it wouldn't be OS X compatable?
As to the comment by the first reply as to this being a samll size for OS X, I agree, but this is the biggest 2.5" NoteBook Drive offered to date. And there is rumor of a 200GB model coming down the pipe. These drives could really help our PowerBooks realize there potential if they could be installed in our platforms giving them real storage capacity.
Thank you for your reply's, your insight is greatly appreciated.

  • Hard Drive Size Limitations? (mid-2010 MBP)

I am upgrading my hard drive in my MBP mid-2010 and was wondering if there would be any problem putting a 2TB drive in?

I don't know of a 2TB drive that would fit in the 2.5" x 9.5mm form factor - doesn't mean that there isn't one. The largest drives that I know of that will fit in MacBook Pros are 1.5TB drives.

  • Is there a file size limitation when using Adobe Send?

What is the largest file I can upload using Adobe Send?

At this point, we have resolved the virtually all of the issues that users were encountering with uploading large files through Adobe Send.
Although there is no 'hard' limit, you should be able to send files of 2GB and larger.

  • File size limitation when using BufferedWriter(FileWriter) on Linux

I am using a Java application (console-based) on Linux RH8.0 with a Pentium III processor.
I preprocess Javascript scripts that #include other Javascript scripts.
(in fact these scripts are Javascript Server pages)
I try putting all the result of the preprocess into one BIG temporary file
    created using File.createTempFile(prefix,".jsp");
    where prefix = "analyse"
I write into this file by instanciating one 'new BufferedWriter(new FileWriter(...))'
and then calling the write() and newLine() methods.
But the temporary file seems to be limited whatever I do to 221184 bytes, which is too short for me.
Could someone help me please ?

Do you call flush() on the BufferedWriter when you've
finished writing to it? I've had problems in the past
with files being truncated/empty when I've neglected
to do that. (Although admittedly, it doesn't sound all
that likely to be the case for you...)
How much output is missing? You say that the file size
of 221184 is "too short", how much output were you
    expecting?
Oh, and as you're running on a Linux-based OS, try
checking to make sure that your file size isn't being
limited - to check, run "ulimit -a" and look for the
'file size' line. By default on Mandrake, it's
unlimited, and I'd expect that to be the case for
RedHat too, but you never know...Thanks, I just realized that I forgot to close() my temporary file before reading it, so it had not the opportunity to flush...
    Thanks a lot.

  • JTextArea size limitation when used as a log

    Hello,
I am writting an application where I have to log many messages.
I already solved (at least I hope so) somme troubles about being always at the end of the area with :
    textArea.append(....);
textArea.setCaretPosition( textArea.getDocument().getLength() );I solve the thread pbs using invokeLater().
But now, last (but not least) issue : how to avoid the text area explosion in term of memory use? I would like to always "stock" the 1000 last messages for example.
Is there a solution (more elegant than cutting the lines by two when above a certain limit)?
    Thanks for help.
    Francois.

Very good idea. Thank you HolgerVogelsang !
I was beginning to think about that track...
As I am verylazy : does anybody have some snippet like that?
    Thanks.

It would be much better if you had separate drives for the pictures and Time Machine backups.....but, if you want to use the same drive for both purposes, temporarily move the folder with the pictures to another location for safe storage.
Run the Time Machine backup on the hard drive and verify that everything is working correctly. Time Machine will format the disk for you in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as part of the backup process.
Then move the folder with the pictures back to the hard drive with the Time Machine backups.
When you have tested to make sure that everything is working again, then and only then should you delete the folder with pictures from the temporary storage area.
Again....it would be much better to keep Time Machine backups on a drive just for that purpose, and other data on another drive for that purpose. This is clearly one of those times when the fact that you can do something does not mean to imply that you should do it.

I have plenty of space on my hard drive (500GB), but when I plug in my iPhone there is a window stating the pone cannot be backed up because of lack of disk space. The same occurs with attempting to import CD's into iTunes. The hard disk was replaced recently in order to gain extra memory. Is there some sort of limit set up from the original hard drive causing this problem?

Boot up from your Snow Leopard Install DVD while holding down the "c" key.
Select the language you wish to use, and then choose "Disk Utility" from the menu bar.
Your HD should appear in a panel on the left hand side of the window which opens. Select it and then click on the "repair disk" button in the right hand section of the window.
If Disk First aid is unable to complete the repair you will need to use a stronger 3rd party utility like DiskWarrior or TechTool Pro.
Once this process has been completed restart your computer.

  • How do I find my tab history? I had hard drive issues and when I launched my browser after getting it back their was no "restore session" option. I know a tab history is kept, just don't remember where or how to exercise it. Thanks

    Question
How do I find my tab history? I had hard drive issues and when I launched my browser after getting it back their was no "restore session" option. I know a tab history is kept, just don't remember where or how to exercise it. Thanks

Firefox 4 saves the previous session automatically, so there is no longer need for the dialog asking if you want to save the current session.<br />
Use "File > Exit" or "Firefox > Exit" if you want to restore multiple windows.<br />
You can use "Firefox > History > Restore Previous Session" to get the previous session at any time.<br />
There is also a "Restore Previous Session" button on the default <b>about:home</b> Home page.
    Another possibility is to use:
    * [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Menu_differences Firefox (Tools) > Options] > General > Startup: "When Firefox Starts": "Show my windows and tabs from last time"

The largest 2.5" SATA HDDs of 9.5 mm thickness that I am aware of are 1 TB in capacity.  There is a 12.5 mm thick  HDD that will fit some MBPs.  But I have not seen any of larger capacity.
Are there now 2 TB HDDs available for MBPs?    If so, I am interested.
    Ciao.
Both OWC and Crucial have SSDs of about 1 TB capacity.

There is no such thing as an "SG3" or "SG4".  Did you possibly mean a 3GS and iPhone4?
It has always been very basic to ensure that a backup exists of your media and other important files.  Computers fail, hard drives crashes... things happen.  Do you not have a backup?  The iPhone, like all iDevices is NOT a backup of your media, but rather a mirror of the content in the iTunes library on your computer.
If your contacts, pics, etc are not on your computer, no backups of the iPhone exist, and they are not on the phone, they are gone.
No one can magically make them re-appear.
