Is there a major flaw with Iphoto in regards to organizing and backing up?

Is there a major flaw with Iphoto in regards to organizing and backing up? And how should I proceed??
Here is my story. I have moved roughly 15,000 photos from 7 computers (4 PCs and 3 Macs - basically everyone's computer in the family) onto one external hard drive. The photos were taken by many different digital cameras, are sparsely labeled, and have the most random names and folders. There are a LOT of duplicates. MY MISSION - label and back them up.
The way I normally deal with photos/DATA is this: I plug my camera into my Mac and immediately think about organizing and backing them up. With "Preview" I look at photos (and decide which one I like), create a folder called "where-ever I took these photos" and drag them into that folder. The problem with Iphoto is that you have no ability to control folders, unlike many other applications.
For example, in Itunes you can rename an artist, or even an album, and it will automatically appear in an updated folder. If you alter a photo in Photoshop, it makes you save it is a new file. In Iphoto you cannot make the same "root level" changes without making duplicates. From what I understand, you can place photos into an Album and then export that album (which makes duplicates). Iphoto will rename each duplicate file and then place it in the correct folder. The problem here is I have no idea where the original is to delete it.
Basically I want to create folders called "Trip to Italy 2003" or "Rachel's Wedding" and place all the photos associated with that event in those folders. The problem I run into is that I have a bunch of duplicates. I have heard of a program called Duplicate Annihilator which has gotten favorable reviews. If I import them into Iphoto all the photos are placed in random named folders. I say random because some of the photos were taken on cameras that didn't have the date set correctly. Hence some of my photos will appear in a labyrinth of folders called "Modified / 2001 / Roll 17 / DCM482 / Image25874654.jpg"
I am totally willing to wipe my Iphoto library clean and start again if there is a way to organize the photos as described above. Eventually I will take these folders and save them on a data DVD.
Thanks to anyone who can help.
Gary

You do not need to delve into the folders within the iPhoto Library via the finder to access any photo. That is all done within iPhoto itself. If you need a photo for use outside of iPhoto read Terence Devlin's treatise on file access. iPhoto is a DAM application - Digital Asset Management, not a folder manager. There's a big difference. You can use keywords, album and smart albums to organize your photos.
If you still have the original files you might consider what I do. I rename each file with the date it was taken using the international date format: YYYY-MM-DD-001.jpg. You can download the demo version ofMedia Expression and automatically rename each folder of photos with the EXIF date and a sequential number. This makes chronological searching and sorting much easier both in iPhoto and the Finder.
If you want to not only manage the photos but the folders then Expression Media will let you do both. It will let you rename files after being imported into a catalog, move them between folders, add ITPC metadata to the files, create virtual albums called Supplemental categories, and much, much more. I use it as my primary DAM and iPhoto for special projects like books, slideshows, calendars, etc.

Copy everything from the old computer or your backup copy of your old computer to your new one.
Type "move itunes library from pc to mac" or similar into the google search bar.

  • Major issues with iphoto 09' v 8.1.2

I am having a lot of dificulty with iphoto and one of my issues is that my photos are showing that they are very poor quality (65kb) but my camera is not even capapble of taking such poor quality. (Canon SX20is)
Is there any way to restore the original resolution or is that info. lost forever; and how do i stop it from doing this in the future???
    I would really appreciate help.
    Thank you,

In your OP, it was unclear just what was going on, so I looked to see if it was possible to get files that small.  If you would have mentioned the library debacle, I wouldn't have bothered.
I think you are going to have to manually rebuild the library.
I would rename the library you have and start iPhoto to create a new one.
Copy the images from originals folder from the old library to another temporary folder somewhere  sort the trash by file type and drag all the jpegs to this temporary folder.  Sort by name, and discard the smaller of any duplicate filenames.
Then go to iPhoto and select file->import to library.
Once it is done, select the event that is created and use event->autosplit events.

  • When I hook my ipod to computer it reads: there is a problem with this drive scan the drivenow and fit it (F) it doesnt work

when I hook up ipod up to to itunes it reads:  IP F  There is a problem with this drive.  scan the drive now and fix it.   When I do this, nothing happens.

    Hello,
I found the same issue. I have an iPod Classic 160 GB (Black) bought in April 2013. I'm using a Windows 8 Laptop bought in August 2014.
This is my account of this problem and why I think customers should just ignore the pop-up, but Apple (and possibly with Microsoft/Windows) should look at the issue.
Recently (approximately from early February 2015), when I connect the iPod to my computer I get a message saying there is a problem with the drive and it needs to be scanned and fixed. In full the message reads:
There's a problem with this drive. Scan the drive now and fix it.
This message appears very shortly and then immediately (once the message disappears, is clicked on, or x-d) brings up Windows File Explorer on the drive and its containing visible folders: which tells me nothing (though it can clearly open it and look at the files not locked to iTunes)
Other than this, the iPod seems to connect properly and work fine. iTunes (ver: 12.1.0.71 64bit) seems to find no issue. The iPod runs fine, it syncs properly (all of my music and podcasts). It responds as it always has and works for hours.
I did some troubleshooting: first on the wire, trying all ports and using an alternative, then on my laptop (all usb ports with other connectors and device drivers) and some basic testing of the iPod and iTunes. All of these seemed fine to me, no issue whatsoever other than the message every time I connect the iPod. So I just ignored it for a while.
Anyway, eventually I got curious (and had some more free time to look at it) and let Windows 8 do what it wanted (scan and fix the drive). Clearly the iPod works fine, and I have nothing important on it that isn't on my computer, so at worst Windows will break the software and I'd have to reformat the drive through iTunes (and Restore to Factory Settings) which I feel fine doing. I also took note of all of my settings on the iPod (like EQ, and the way I laid out the menus etc...) so I can redo those from defaults.
Prior to doing this, the iPod was version 2.0.5 (the latest version).
When I set the drive to be scanned, windows told me it identified the problem and would fix it. I don't remember the exact wording, as this message was immediately obscured by a pop-up telling me the drive was in use and software using it should be closed. So I closed iTunes which in turn caused the pop-up and message to disappear.
Windows then said it had succeeded and brought up the File Explorer of the drive again (now with some folders missing). When I loaded iTunes back up, it told me there was a problem with the iPod and it would need to be restored. Ejecting the iPod showed that it seemed to believe it had no content on it.
So I restored the iPod through iTunes, downloading the latest iPod update again and started syncing the iPod. After adding a couple songs, I ejected it and played them - they worked fine, the menus had returned to defaults but I quickly changed them to how I liked and overall the iPod is back to how it was. I've now set it to sync the remaining thousands of songs (and couple hundred podcasts). Edit - by the end of this post, this has finished copying Music, Podcasts, and Playlists. It's back to exactly how it was before.
Annoyingly, this has not removed the pop-up message when I connect the iPod, still the same as before - the most irksome thing being the file window opening every time i connect the iPod, though this is still minor (I just have to remember that this will happen and manually close it each time).
So I'm at a loss on the cause, and am going to return to ignore it. I'd greatly appreciate if Apple could look into this. I'm wondering if it is a recent update to iTunes or to Windows, but I don't trust that I won't be able to undo changes if I myself began looking through them (and I lack the time and expertise to do that effectively). I think there might be that Windows is detecting something in the way that Apple formats their iPod drives that it believes is an issue (even when it isn't). My guess is the way of formatting is unchanged (the iPod hadn't received an update recently to suggest and alteration to this) but maybe the things Windows is looking for may have slightly changed and disagrees with Apple's way of keeping the iPod Drive proprietary to iTunes.
TL,DR: Advice to others (and Ljchicago) searching this topic is to ignore the message for now.
    Thanks,
    Dixavd

  • Authentication with UME separation of front end and back end

My webdynpro project has 2 application. One for Admin one for Rating.
Is it possible to create a java class at Webdynpro level and share it between the 2 applications?
    Why the need?
Created a custom class (lets called it CommonEJB), to point to the right pages and set of UI controls after the initial login with UME. This class utilizes the IWDClientUser.getSAPUset() method to get IUser object.
If it is not possible to create a java class at Webdynpro, then this ejb will need to be deployed to the backend.
Putting it at the backend is not good as security wise, its always better to separate the authentication between front and back end.
    Any ideas/solutions?
    thanks

Well, i wish to create a java class that can separate the view areas depending on their login.
lets say you're a manager, u can see certain views. and if you're a supervisor u see another. This is achieved using the java class with information from getSAPUser() position. After retrieving the position, using the java class will programmatically assigned the appropriate views, buttons, tabs etc.
so this class need to in front end, and not back end. problem is we have 2 application.
if the class is created front end in one application can it be shared with another.

  • Macbook Pro 2010 Forced to Restart - is there a major problem with it?

A couple of days ago my 2010 Macbook Pro told me it had to restart because of some error. I got it August 2010, in December 2010 it had a hard drive failure. Since then its just gotten hot a lot and then about a month or two ago I had to take it into an Apple Store because it was running so slowly it became unuseable, which happened just before the hard drive failure of 2010. But I managed to find the source of it myself (no thanks to the geniuses...) and cleared it up (though it still ran quite slowly). The trackpad has always had issues of not responding and recently both the keyboard and trackpad stopped responding completely (which I filmed in case there were any further issues) and luckily I have a bluetooth keyboard and wireless mouse so this was not too big a problem. After a day, they miraculously started working again. Another issue that has happened a couple times is when the sound stops working, which again miraculously starts working again with a restart. Anyway, the restart issue happened after all of the above and the report it gave me is below:

  • MAJOR MESSUP with iphoto: HELP?

    hello good samaritans,
when my macbook pro started with the "your startup disk is almost full" messages, i moved (thinking that i was copying) the iphoto library to an external hard drive. then i "made room" in my startup disk by trashing those photos that were now "safely" duplicated elsewhere.
when i restarted iphoto, of course, i didn't find my photos. i brought the "copy" back from the external hard drive and nothing was ever the same. i tried various things that probably made everything worse. i was able to recover only maybe 20% of all my picture. ARE THEY ANYWHERE? are they lost forever?
    THANK YOU

Welcome to the iPhoto user discussion forums
i moved (thinking that i was copying) the iphoto library to an external hard drive.
Is this copy still on the external HD? If it is quit iPhoto and launch it while depressing the option key - use the select library option and point to the iPhoto library on the external HD
If everything is ok you can not trash the iPhoto library from the pictures folder on your internal drive

  • Major Issues With Iphoto 09  *Please See PIc*

I have never had my computer do this since day 1. Ever since Snow Leopard - if I crop or edit a photo - I get the following? Is my graphics card going bad? have no idea what this could be. Any insight on the issue? Thanks

    Iphoto 09
    Macbook Pro 2.16 C2D 4 GB Ram, 320 Hd

I had something somewhat similar on a first-gen Intel Mac Mini two nights ago. I simply double clicked and opened a photo in iPhoto 09 and the whole screen went funny like that. After different screen elements, refreshed, parts of it would disappear, but it took a total reboot to clear the screen. I haven't seen it since, though.

  • Found a major flaw with Apple Configurator 1.4

I have just upgraded to the new version on my personal machine to give it a test and found a problem when managing apps on an iPad. In the previous version I was able to upgrade an app on the device to a new or previous version without removing any of the documents within the app.
In version 1.4 it seems this isn't possible. The only way to change the app version is to manually delete the app from the IPad directly and then use configurator to put the required version on. This wouldn't be so much of a problem if the documents contained in the app weren't 3/4GB in size.
This seems like a huge step backwards. Replacing an app version on 10 devices took 20 seconds in the previous version and now it's likely to take 25 minutes or more. Not very conveient when you have to change it on 135 iPads. I certainly won't be updating Configurator on the rest of my machines.
If someone has the same problem and has fiound a workaround, please share. Otherwise I would hope that a fix to this issue will be implemented in an update.

    Hi Dan,
A fellow Configurator user just posted this to collect a list of issues with AC v1.4

  • Another newbie discovering the MAJOR FLAW with language reset

I was just using my Nano for the first time and the language reset itself to some Asian hieroglyphics which I cannot undo. I have tried to follow the instructions to restore the original settings via "update" download, but on the Apple site, I only get a "no new updates available" message. What now??

The procedure is not "update", it is "restore to original settings" (just below in the same screen).
Read the warning, you will loose all your music.\
An option is to find blindly the settings menu and change the language; hint: Menu, Menu (to get to top menu), next to last is Settings, select, language is 3rd from bottom to top (next to next to last) the last one is "reset settings" by the way, first language in the list is English (but that should display in something legible anyway).

  • Is there a way to recover iPhoto library after erasing drive and clean install of Mavericks?

Is there a way to recover the photos in my iphoto library after erasing my SSD drive and reinstalling mavericks? My time capsule backed everything up except iphoto, and I had 3 years worth of important photots in there. Is there any way to recover them?

In addition to using a Time Capsule drive and using Time Machine, with this painful lesson learned, in the near future, purchase another high quality, high speed (USB 3.0, Thundetbolt OR FireWIre 800 depending what connections are on your Mac) external hard drive, formatted for Mac, and use a data cloning app such as CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper to make bootable clones/copies of your Mac's entire internal hard drive.
Bootable clones and data cloning apps are the best and most reliable way of creating reliable backups of your important data in the future.
Also, my other advise stands, too! If you have data the is like "gold" to you copy this data manually to other media such as CDs/DVDs and/or high capacity USB flash drives.
Sorry you have lost your precious photos.
Painful lesson, but good info to prevent this all from happening, again.
WIth computers, having many copies and redundancies of data is key to never losing important computer data.
    Again, sorry.
