Is there a mountain lion update for bash bug

Just saw the ars tecnica security warning:
http://arstechnica.com/security/2014/09/bug-in-bash-shell-creates-big-security-h ole-on-anything-with-nix-in-it/
I am running OSX 10.8.5 -
has Apple produced a patch for this version of the OS?

Apple has promised an update for advanced Unix users (the only ones possibly affected are those running OS 10.9.5):
http://www.imore.com/apple-working-quickly-protect-os-x-against-shellshock-explo it
Advanced users who have OS X machines in a situation where they may be remotely exploited, such as systems administrators with internet-facing OS X servers, can mitigate the issue by recompiling bash with the official patches from GNU until Apple issues its own update:

  • Is there a Mountain Lion driver for HP Deskjet 5740?

I've been to the HP support site; they make it look as if they have a Deskjet 5740 driver for Mountain Lion, but when I get to the page where I'm supposed to be able to choose a download, I'm caught in this loop with "choose your connection" and an FAQ link, but no actual link to an actual driver download. Here's the page I keep being caught at:
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?product=357202&lc=en&cc=us&d lc=en
Is HP pulling my leg here? Is there a real, actual HP 5740 driver for Mountain Lion, or is it some kind of mythical thing? Almost all of my Google results end up pointing to the HP support/download site, but when I follow the links and click on the appropriate choices, I'm always routed to the link above, which claims to have a download link, but when I get there, there's nothing.
    Thanks in advance,

Apple supplies all the drivers for printers that are supported in each version of OS X. If Apple doesn't have a drive for it in the Printer Driver Package then there isn't one and that is why HP has you in that loop.
One way to check it to open Print & scan then click the Add Printer, if there are no printers already in that section, or the Plus ( + ) sign at the bottom and then broswe for the printer and OS X will install the proper driver and software.

  • Mountain Lion Update for my macbook pro FAILED!!!!

    Hi everyone,
I just updated my macbook pro yesterday. However, when time remained 19 minutes, the updated failed and a message popped out: 'Install Failed: OS X could not be installed on your computer.' It also asked me to restart and try installing again.
However, after I restarted, it was still unsuccessful and this same message popped out. Whenever I turn on my macbook pro, it just stays on the the update install process and I can't even quit it. I tried to choose Startup Disk, however, no system shown and I couldn't select the system I want to use to start up my computer. I just don't know what to do but I really need to use my macbook pro as soon as possible. I have to use the files on it to do something really urgent and important. If someone has encountered this problem and found out the solution, please tell and help me! I really need your kind help!!!! Thanks so much!!!!

If you have supported Macs, just go to the Mac App store and buy it. You can install it on up to 5 Macs on one licence

  • I currently have Leopard, and there are no longer updates for it. So I must upgrade to either Snow Leopard or Mountain Lion. Without doing so I cannot update my itunes, and my ipod is no longer compatile with my mac. How can I buy the upgrade

I currently have Leopard, and there are no longer updates for it. So I must upgrade to either Snow Leopard or Mountain Lion. Without doing so I cannot update my itunes, and my ipod is no longer compatile with my mac. How can I buy the upgrade, since I do not have access to the mac store as that comes with Snow Leopard? I went to Best Buy and they said neither Snow Leopard or Mountain Lion can be bought there.

Start by checking if you can run Snow Leopard:
Requirements for OS X 10.6 'Snow Leopard'
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
Whilst Apple have withdrawn Snow Leopard from their stores, you can still get it from Apple by calling 1-800-MY-APPLE (if you are in the USA) and they will supply the SL DVD for $20 for a single user, or $30 for a family pack that covers up to 5 Macs.  You can also purchase the code to use to download Lion from the same number (Lion requires an Intel-based Mac with a Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, i7 or Xeon processor and 2GB of RAM, running the latest version of Snow Leopard), or you can purchase Mountain Lion from the App Store - if you can run that:
    http://www.apple.com/osx/specs/
If you are outside the US call your national Apple Helpline:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57
If you're in the UK, use this number: 0871 508 4400
When you have installed it, run Software Update to download and install the latest updates for Snow Leopard.
To use iCloud you have to upgrade all the way to Mountain Lion:

  • When there will be an update for Fireworks CS6 Mountain Lion?

While editing a file with multiple frames, Adobe Fireworks CS6 quit unexpectedly.
My work was not saved by the 'recovered file' feature and I had been so immersed in editing the animation I was creating that I had probably not saved my work for the last 20 minutes or so. My arm is going to fall off from doing stuff over and over again ...not really, but it does waste my time.
Any word on when there will be an update for CS6 for Mountain Lion?
    (I'm currently using 12.0.0.236)

This is not just a problem on Mountain Lion.  Fireworks crashes for everyone.
I recommend turning on auto-save (Google how to do this) to save yourself from punching your screen.

  • Java applet help for mountain lion update on macbook pro

Hey, I upgraded to the new mountain lion update yesterday and since then when opening java applets, it won't allow me to do anything with them such as entering usernames and passwords. It was working fine yesterday before I did the update but now I can't seem to get it to work. I've reinstalled Java and it says it's all installed correctly. I was wondering if anyone else is having/had the same problem and knows what to do?
    Thanks in advance

Hi Leonie! I was running into the same problem on my Macbook Air with ML but I just found a soultion that worked for me.
I downloaded and installed Java 7 from oracle's website.  And then in the java prefences referenced before, changed the Java 7 build to be my default.
All my applets work great now for me.
    Hope this helps!

  • Home sharing does not work with new mountain lion update.

home sharing does not work with new mountain lion update. Does anyone else have the same issue. Updated all computers in my home, deauthorized and reauthorized each computer. turn off home sharing and turned it back on. don't know what else to do..please help...

Our Apple TVs continue to lose connection ever since installing Mountain Lion on the host computer. The only thing that fixes them is to quit and relaunch iTunes, which only works unti the ATV goes to sleep. If a movie is paused for more than a few minutes and the ATV goes to sleep, pressing play again on the remote is greeted with "There are no movies on this computer" or "Turn on Home Sharing."
If we stop a video on one ATV and attempt to resume it in another room, the error begins again. The other ATV can't connect until iTunes is relaunched.
My guess is that it has something to do with the new [annoying] security settings. But I still haven't found a fix other than restarting iTunes everytime we want to watch something from our downloads. Fail.

  • Mountain Lion Update Doesn't Finish - Laptop will not boot

    Hi,
Last night I saw that there was a Mountain Lion update available for my MacBook Pro.  I've always updated my software as the updates became available.  I had several other apps to update, so I chose "Update All".
I got a message at the end that the installation required a reboot, however, the MacBook Pro could not restart as it said that FireFox was canceling the restart.  I looked and the FireFox add-in XMarks was stuck in some type of failed sync mode, and couldn't be stopped.  I was also unable to force FireFox to quit.
After an hour of this, I finally just had to press the off button and power down.  I assumed that the software update would still continue when I restarted my computer, but all that I have is just a grey screen with the Apple logo and a circular progress indicator that has been going in a circle for about 7 hours.
I guess my first question would be, "How do I actually boot into my MacBook Pro and get past this grey screen".
Is my laptop hosed?  If so, how would I go about reinstalling Mountain Lion?  I bought my MacBook Pro on June 21, 2012, so everything should be compatible.  I have previously updated to Mountain Lion without any problems.
I'd like to find some way to be able to boot up my MacBook and skip this grey screen.  But, if I'm just in disaster recovery mode, how would I obtain a Mountain Lion install DVD?  I've already paid for the update.
    Thanks,
    William

I found out how to get to the disk utilities.  I also did a verbose log of the boot-up process, and it hung right after it said that the handshake with my internet connection was complete.
So, for others, Command-R at the boot tone got me to the Disk Utilities, and Command-V at the boot tone gave me verbose logging of the bootup process.
I repaired my disk and permissions, and nothing changed, so I decided to reinstall Mountain Lion.
    Thanks,
    William

  • I have seen so much response about the Mountain Lion update slowing down computers.  I am updating from Mac OS x 10.6.8.  What can I do to ensure the upgrade will go fine?  Do I unplug my external hard drive before installing, or keep it plugged in?

I have seen so much response about the Mountain Lion update slowing down computers.  I am updating from Mac OS x 10.6.8.  What can I do to ensure the upgrade will go fine?  Do I unplug my external hard drive before installing, or keep it plugged in?
Also, I have the 08 version of iWork. Will this cause problems for the update?  Can I update this AFTER I update the processor?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
There's no reason to think that Mountain Lion will slow down your Mac. Just make a backup of your data before upgrading with Time Machine > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1427
Also, check that your apps are compatible > http://www.roaringapps.com Upgrade them to a compatible version or delete them before upgrading.
The external drive won't make the OS X Mountain Lion installer fail, but it's better to unplug it during the upgrade.
iWork '08 is compatible with Mountain Lion. iWork '09 includes OS X Mountain Lion features and can be purchased at the Mac App Store.
To upgrade to OS X Mountain Lion, I recommend at least 4 GB of RAM. You can check how much memory you have in Apple menu > About this Mac

  • SD Card not showing after Mountain Lion Update

This matter has been discussed for some time now in
Apple Support Communities > Desktop Computers > iMac (Intel) > Discussions
SD Card not showing after Mountain lion Update
Since the update to Mountain Lion, the SD slot does not show up in Finder.
Someone gave a fix using the killall in Terminal, and that worked only once.  I have not been able to get that fix to work again.
The only saving grace for me is that my SD Card us is always from my Nikon camera, and Nikon ViewNX 2 software is able to see and read from the card.
Killall may have worked partially in that I no longer get the error message telling me that I have removed the SD card improperly, and need to dismount it first.
However, Finder still cannot see it.

    BrianForbesColgate wrote:
    Thanks, Barney ...
Those are basics ... Been there, done that, first.
Then you should hava posted all the troubleshooting you already accomplished.
Does the card show up in System Information? Or is that another one of the "basics" you've already looked into?
Does it show up in Disk Utility? If so, have you tried formatting it there to determine if it is a formatting problem?

  • Downloaded Mountain Lion update but couldn't install it and now it's gone.

    Hi.
I bought a Macbook Pro today, asked for the redeem code to download Mountain Lion update and received it OK. After the update downloaded, it said there was an error and the update disappeared without being installed. I can't download it again because the code has been used, help please, no idea what to do.
    Thanks!
    Ricardo

In the app store, click purchases at the top , and download there.
If it's not visible, click "store" on the top bar and "view my account."  You can unhide it there.
If you had a problem downloading, before you do either of the above, you may want to trash the contents of /var/folders/ (found by "go to folder" in finders "go" menu, top bar).

    Hi Guys,

I have deayed the latest OS Software update because of this.

There are no specific updates for Lion or Mountain Lion. The Office updates are for all OS's.
    Go here: http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads
Then, click on the version of Office that you have. It will list the updates that are available.
Also click on Additional Tools. Download and install the update for Auto Updater.
Note that Microsoft's updates for Office are usually not cumulative, so you must install them all in order.
The Auto Update app will find the ones you need and install them.
From any Office App, go to the Help menu and select "Check for Updates." It will open the AutoUpdater.
The current version is in /Library/Application Support/Microsoft/MAU2.0

  • Mac won't start automatically after Mountain Lion update

Today I found the latest Mountain Lion update in the App Store and I started the installation. It seemed to be working fine so I left the room for a while to do something else while it was installing. However, when I got back, Mountain Lion hadn't started by itself, and I was left with nothing but the "grey background" (if you know what I mean) that shows up during the installation.
Nothing happened so after a while I had not choice but to reboot the Mac myself by holding in the on/off button at the back. I'm not an experienced Mac user so I'm a bit worried. Does this happen often and does it mean something could be wrong with my iMac?
After the reboot I entered the App Store again to see if the update was still there, but it wasn't, so I guess the installation itself went well. I just got a bit worried that something's wrong with my iMac. I just bought it.
    Thanks for your help!

Ah ok, I'm relieved to hear that. So others have had the same issue with this update too? Thanks!
