Is there a New Oxford English Dictionary?
Hello,
My iMac came with a New Oxford American Dictionary and Oxford American Writers Thesaurus. Should an iMac purchased in the UK have the English versions?

No, OS X is the same no matter where it is sold. Of course a new Mac will have OS X 10.5, which includes a Japanese dictionary and some other features, and also allows others to be added.

ODE won't update. Why is my Oxford English Dictionary app is not properly registered in my iStore account? I purchased it and updated it at least once before. Now, when I select the app it flashes an "Update Now - OK" request/message. However, it does not update when I select OK. Any suggestions ?
@Winston Churchill. That would be simple enough as he spent the night here with my son and very likely went online with Firefox. Advantages and disadvantages of that one.
What makes this even more interesting is that I let my son use my iPhone for several months. I discovered that he registered my iPhone on his account and using my name. My iPhone does still show up on his/my (?) account. The iPad does not Here's the schematic as it it was:
[email protected] His PW NewName MyiPhone[same serial number] FMI Offline
[email protected] My PW MyName MyiPhone[same serial number] FMI Offline
MyiPad FMI Offline
12 hours after theft:
[email protected] HisPW NewName MyiPhone [same serial number] FMI Offline
[email protected] My PW MyName No Devices
I thought it might have been the 2 account/1 device problem but it's worked for awhile. So..
WHAT NEXT? (I did find the IMEI and IMEID in my backup in iTunes by the way-can't validate for some reason). -
Oxford English Dictionary (OED) CD version
I am considering purchasing OED CD version. Is it compatible with Snow Lep? Know of someone who has first hand experience using this dictionary software that you could refer me to?
Thanks
MacdvmOxford's website doesn't have much on feedback about this product.
Essentially I am looking for some feedback, hopefully a thumbs up, and then I'll shell out.

Shorter Oxford English Dictioanry 6th Edition CD-ROM
For everyday purpose, I am pretty satisfied with Mac OS X's built-in Dictionary based on the New Oxford American Dictionary. It is up-to-date and has good coverage of colloquial North American English. But I am considering the Shorter Oxford English Dictionary 6th Edition on CD-ROM because I need a dictionary drawing more on literary and historical examples and giving more emphasis to serious written English than everyday spoken English.
I am posting this message because I want to know in terms of layout, if the SOED on CD-ROM is as pleasing and easy to use as Mac OS X's Dictionary. Is it "Mac-like"? Well, anyway I just want to know if it is user-friendly and if it is better to have the 2-volume hardcover edition or the CD-ROM version.
Thank you.The SOED for Mac was probably created using Apple's Human Interface Guidelines. If so, then it will be at least relatively nice to look at and to use. At one point (OS8 - Classic), I was using the full-blown OED on my machines (I don't know if they make a Mac version of the full OED anymore), and it was a little ugly and clunky, but a very fine resource, nevertheless.)

Successfully installed Firefox on my new laptop, transferred folders etc. I cannot find a British English dictionary to download to version 31.1., running on Windows 8. help, plese.
''Naeem [[#answer-669741|said]]''
<blockquote>
First of all, you're using Firefox 34.0.5 as your details say.
This addon called "[https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/british-english-dictionary-/?src=search British English Dictionary]" is the most used addon currently.
Reply if this doesn't help.
</blockquote>
Naeem, Thank you, point taken about the version number - I simply saw the download page state that each of the dictionaries I tried said "Not available for 31.1.0". What actually happens is that any of the dictionaries I download are not recognised by Thunderbird. The spell-check pane appears, but does not highlight any misspelt word nor give any suggested replacement. I have found a dictionary downloaded to "My documents/ Downloads" but when I double click it the system cannot open an "xpi" file. Is this because I do not have Windows XP but Windows8. I also checked the download site for "Other versions" which all say not suitable for my system
? I fearI am confused! PS the spell checking has just worked on this message! -

MontYou may look at:
http://dictionary.oed.com/news/
You will be offered to subscribe to the Oxford Dictionary Online.
Searching in Google maybe you will fing a third product which you may install on your machine.
In the two first googled pages I didn't find such a product but one never knows.

Does anyone know the procedure for installing the Canadian English dictionary in FrameMaker 9.0? We were able to install it successfully in 7.2 and 8.0, but the same procedure does not work for 9.0. The procedure we followed for 7.2 & 8.0 is as follows:
Modify installation
Scroll down to Canadian dictionaries and click the dropdown arrow
Choose the "remove" option (third option indicated with red X)
Then run the installer again, this time choosing the first option under Canadian dictionaries.
Open a new document, type "hoser" or "pogey" (specific Cdn words), and run the spellcheck to make sure that these words don't get picked up.
We were instructed to change the regional and language options settings to Canadian English in the Control Panel. However, the dictionary is still not working properly. That is strange.<br />
I can't reproduce it on a en-US installation.
Which locale do you have installed?
The en-US locale that has its own dictionary or a en-GB locale that doesn't come with a dictionary?
Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.
See "Basic Troubleshooting: Make a new profile":

There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins" in case there are still problems.
If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.

Translation Dictionary Based on English/English Dictionary
Hi,
I am sorry, I don't know where this post should go since there is no such category.
I want to create an English/other language/English dictionary for online publishing. I did extensive searches but was not able to find anything suitable.
Ideally, I would like to load an English/English dictionary and go in and edit the definitions of words into the language of my choice. Thereafter, I want to publish the dictionary online either as a database or as a flat HTML pages based on the alphabet.
Can someone help me?
Thanks!I didn't realize that the said website has a Lebanese keyboard. I can see that their work is futile. I've already told these guys that trying to invent new characters to pronounce sounds not available in English is useless because people are naturally lazy and want the easy way i.e. what you write is what you say. They did not listen to me and went ahead with a complex system that will go no where.
What actually is in use all over Lebanon is they write Lebanese using the same characters we use with three exceptions where numbers are used to represent sounds not available in English. They are number 2, 3 and 7. That's it and a combination of 2 sets of characters KH and GH. This is all a person who needs to read Lebanese in Latin characters needs to learn. Please take a look at my simplified system on my website here:

Please see the key for pronunciation below the second map in the bottom half of the page.

Concise english dictionary: profanity filter
I had the CED (Concise English Dictionary) installed in my i-Phone 3G and had access to the full dictionary by unchecking the "profanity" filter in "Settings." When I upgraded to i-Phone v.3.0 the dictionary was censored and the filter uncheck is no longer available. The response I got from CED is: "Apple rejected our application because of the profanity filter (stating that "applications must not contain any obscene, pornographic, offensive or defamatory content or materials of any kind"). However, we can put the profane words back in the next release because the new OS version has parental control feature. However, apple is not quite consistent on this, sometimes they reject application even if they have the right ratings."
It is absurd that Apple is assuming the role of morality judges, with all the garbage in the web. Profane words are part of the full spectrum of language -- and harmless. DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW TO ADDRESS THIS ISSUE AND GET TO THE RIGHT PERSON?I sympathise. There have been a few cases recently that have highlighted some significant inconsistencies in how the Apps store judges whether to host an app (Nine Inch Nails for one)
I think it's more to do with how the review process operates (Apple provide guidelines, but individual reviews - possibly outsourced - have latitude to exercise their own discretion) than with a deliberate policy.
Doesn't help you a fat lot. I suggest contacting some of the better known Apple commentators (Pogue, Gruber, Mossberg etc; maybe Macworld). They're usually pretty good at raising the profile of issues such as this. -
I'm trying to install an english dictionary but after clicking "install" it asks me to restart my computer. So I click restart but it doesn't respond. When I use the restart function from the start menu, my computer does restart but the add-on dictionary is not "added on".
Can someone please help me with this? Thank youHi, thanks for getting back to me. I found a site: dictionary.com and have bookmarked it so I can access that site when I need to look up a word. I think my problem was I was trying to get a dictionary as an "add-on" (similar to a news add-on or a translator add-on) but I wasn't able to do that. Bookmarking the dictionary site works for me so I guess my problem has been solved.
(I'm still very new to cyberspace so if my explanation sounds completely "out there", that's the reason.)
Thank you again for your time -
English dictionary has disappeared with mountain lion (a complaint from Spain)
Hi,
I'm a Spanish Mac user and was a fond user of the excellent built-in English dictionary that came with Lion and with former operating systems. A couple of days ago I installed the new Mountain Lion and noticed that the former English dictionary had been replaced by a school-level Spanish dictionary. I felt betrayed and dumped, as I encountered no warning during installation that this was going to happen. And of course the Mountain Lion reviews I had read in the past weeks did not mention this problem, as it does not affect users from English-speaking countries. Has anyone experienced the same problem? What can I do? I have tried to recover and install a former version of the Dictionary app, but I haven't succeeded yet.
Besides, since I installed Mountain Lion Mail has become so slow that I now prefer checking email on the website. The connection between Mail and the new Address Book (now called Contacts) is also incredibly slow. In sum: the bunch of new iPad-inspired applications that are included in Mountain Lion definitely come with too many disadvantages. Sincerely, I wouldn't recommend to install it, unless these inconveniences are solved. Please, Apple, solve them quickly. This is just a disgrace.
Best,
Martamartagq wrote:

That is not the case for any standard installation. Everyone should have all the old dictionaries, plus Spanish, German, and Chinese.
Have you gone to the Preferences of Dictionary.app and made sure all the boxes are checked? -
Does it have other-than english dictionary?
hello
i wonder if Leopard comes with more other-than-english-dictionary...
Mac Dictionary is very useful because one can simply press ctrlcmmdD under any app and have words looked up... so i'd like to have other than english words looked up quickly...
or if anyone knows of other 3rd party dictionaries working with Mac's dictionary... i'd appreciate your help...
thanksWith the data I have I think English is nor the first either the second in terms of first language, but combining those people who speak it as second language to people who use it as first, it cames to the second-first position. In terms of people who have to use it, English is, by far, the first, as in the internet (English-Chinese-Spanish) and in terms of influence (English-French-Spanish). For me, as many other spanish people, is a great help to have a English dictionary (a good one) included in the OS. Maybe it's more useful than having the spanish one, but it would be a good step to integrate some other like RAE of Spanish, and I think it's not dificult, since the dictionary is done, as the Oxford one.
A note: Chinese is not only Mandarin but the amalgam of dialects derivated called standard Chinese.
