Is there a "new" utility called Maintenance?

I have version 1.3.8 in my Utilities folder that does not work with OS X 10.8.5.  Is there a new version?

How to maintain a Mac
1. Make redundant backups, keeping at least one off site at all times. One backup is not enough. Don’t back up your backups; make them independent of each other. Don’t rely completely on any single backup method, such as Time Machine. If you get an indication that a backup has failed, don't ignore it.
2. Keep your software up to date. In the Software Update preference pane, you can configure automatic notifications of updates to OS X and other Mac App Store products. Some third-party applications from other sources have a similar feature, if you don’t mind letting them phone home. Otherwise you have to check yourself on a regular basis. This is especially important for complex software that modifies the operating system, such as device drivers. Before installing any Apple update, you must check that all such modifications that you use are compatible.
3. Don't install crapware, such as “themes,” "haxies," “add-ons,” “toolbars,” “enhancers," “optimizers,” “accelerators,” "boosters," “extenders,” “cleaners,” "doctors," "tune-ups," “defragmenters,” “firewalls,” "barriers," “guardians,” “defenders,” “protectors,” most “plugins,” commercial "virus scanners,” "disk tools," or "utilities." With very few exceptions, this stuff is useless, or worse than useless. Above all, avoid any software that purports to change the look and feel of the user interface.
The more actively promoted the product, the more likely it is to be garbage. The most extreme example is the “MacKeeper” scam.
As a rule, the only software you should install is that which directly enables you to do the things you use a computer for — such as creating, communicating, and playing — and does not modify the way other software works. Use your computer; don't fuss with it.
Safari extensions, and perhaps the equivalent for other web browsers, are a partial exception to the above rule. Most are safe, and they're easy to get rid of if they don't work. Some may cause the browser to crash or otherwise malfunction.  Some are malicious. Use with caution, and install only well-known extensions from relatively trustworthy sources, such as the Safari Extensions Gallery.
Never install any third-party software unless you know how to uninstall it. Otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.
4. Beware of trojans. A trojan is malicious software (“malware”) that the user is duped into installing voluntarily. Such attacks were rare on the Mac platform until sometime in 2011, but are now increasingly common, and increasingly dangerous.
There is some built-in protection against downloading malware, but you can’t rely on it — the attackers are always at least one day ahead of the defense. You can’t rely on third-party protection either. What you can rely on is common-sense awareness — not paranoia, which only makes you more vulnerable.
Never install software from an untrustworthy or unknown source. If in doubt, do some research. Any website that prompts you to install a “codec” or “plugin” that comes from the same site, or an unknown site, is untrustworthy. Software with a corporate brand, such as Adobe Flash Player, must be acquired directly from the developer. No intermediary is acceptable, and don’t trust links unless you know how to parse them. Any file that is automatically downloaded from a web page without your having requested it should go straight into the Trash. A website that claims you have a “virus,” or that anything else is wrong with your computer, is rogue.
In OS X 10.7.5 or later, downloaded applications and Installer packages that have not been digitally signed by a developer registered with Apple are blocked from loading by default. The block can be overridden, but think carefully before you do so.
Because of recurring security issues in Java, it’s best to disable it in your web browsers, if it’s installed. Few websites have Java content nowadays, so you won’t be missing much. This action is mandatory if you’re running any version of OS X older than 10.6.8 with the latest Java update. Note: Java has nothing to do with JavaScript, despite the similar names. Don't install Java unless you're sure you need it. Most people don't.
5. Don't fill up your boot volume. A common mistake is adding more and more large files to your home folder until you start to get warnings that you're out of space, which may be followed in short order by a boot failure. This is more prone to happen on the newer Macs that come with an internal SSD instead of the traditional hard drive. The drive can be very nearly full before you become aware of the problem. While it's not true that you should or must keep any particular percentage of space free, you should monitor your storage consumption and make sure you're not in immediate danger of using it up. According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of free space on the startup volume for normal operation.
If storage space is running low, use a tool such as the free application OmniDiskSweeper to explore your volume and find out what's taking up the most space. Move rarely-used large files to secondary storage.
6. Relax, don’t do it. Besides the above, no routine maintenance is necessary or beneficial for the vast majority of users; specifically not “cleaning caches,” “zapping the PRAM,” "resetting the SMC," “rebuilding the directory,” "defragmenting the drive," “running periodic scripts,” “dumping logs,” "deleting temp files," “scanning for viruses,” "purging memory," "checking for bad blocks," "testing the hardware," or “repairing permissions.” Such measures are either completely pointless or are useful only for solving problems, not for prevention.
The very height of futility is running an expensive third-party application called “Disk Warrior” when nothing is wrong, or even when something is wrong and you have backups, which you must have. Disk Warrior is a data-salvage tool, not a maintenance tool, and you will never need it if your backups are adequate. Don’t waste money on it or anything like it.

Any ideas please.  I am using Yosemite 10.1.1
    Many thanks Jaz Eilles

Sounds like you have a folder with an album named fred inside of it.  Folders can only hold other folders, albums, slideshows, etc. but not just photos.  So you must be sure to drop the photo directly onto the album titled fred that resides inside that folder otherwise it will create a new album.
So expand the folder so the fred album is visible and drop the new photo onto the album.

It came to my attention there a new program working with itune since last update named Apsdaemon.exe its been using 99% of my processus when its active.
Any idea why so much and will it be fix eventually because before last update i never encounter any issue using Itune? Now when that aplication or extention from Itune is working my computor froze to a huge alt. I play video games online and love listening to my music with itune playing in the background and normally was able to have firefox open and a program called ventrillo all working at the same time and now i can barelly have itune and play a game. As soon it start been choppy i just control alt delete wait 5 minute to close down apsdaemon.exe when i'm capable most of the time i have to restart my computor. And why is it so Heavy consuming on the process its memory utility is under the 100ko i believe so why 99% of my processus is been use ?
a good exemple i could give is itune.exe working it shows process 02% for 123 000ko that is light and perfect.

Wow, Karan Taneja, you've just embarrassed yourself on a worldwide support forum.  Not only is your post ridiculous and completely inappropriate for a technical support forum, but it also shows your ignorance as to whom you think the audience is.  Apple is not here.  It's users, like you.
If you would have spent half the time actually reading the Terms of Use of this forum that YOU agreed to by signing up to post, as you did composing that usesless, inappropriate post, you (and the rest of us on this forum) would have been much better off.

  • Uninstall CS2 after upgrade to CS4 - is there a new walktrough

Just upgraded from CS2 Premium to CS4 Premium on Mac 0SX 10.5.6, but left CS2 on there as I wanted to copy over a few preset files etc from CS2 to CS4.
Now I want to remove CS2. I've got an old document link for removing CS2 but it mentions removing directories that I know CS4 has installed or shares (e.g. Adobe Utilities and Adobe Updater)
Is there a new walkthrough or utility to remove CS2 once you have upgraded to CS4?

    Buko
That's a bit too succinct and general....
In your apps folder will be a folder call 'Adobe Creative Suite 2'. Within this is an' uninstallers' folder which contains the file 'How to uninstall.pdf'. This file is reproduced (as far as I can tell) at http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=331301
This talks you through the various folders/files to remove.
BUT BEWARE - this was written before CS3/4 existed and as my post (http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.59b82bde) points out, there will be some folders it suggests you remove, but that CS4 actually need (e.g. Applications/Utilities/Adobe Utilities folder).
I'm seeking a new 'How to Remove CS2 after installing CS4' document myself.
Have spoken to Adobe Tech support today and their suggestion was to "not remove any files/folders you think CS4 may need'.
How flaky is that for Technical Support - some people like to keep their hard drives lean.

  • Is there a defrag utility?

This is my first mac and so much different from pc...i was curious if there is a defrag utility or if i even need one for the mac? what about firewall? is there anything important i should know or use on a mac? i just want to keep it running smooth and safe...thank for an info you can help me with.

    Hello thunder:
To add my 2 cents to the feedback....
There is essentially no "routine" maintenance required for a Mac running OS X. OS X "defrags" files of less than 20 MB on the fly. The UNIX maintenance routines are automatically initiated. Do not bother with AV software as there are NO documented viruses that affect a Mac running OS X - none. Repairing permissions is probably a waste of time although I admit I do it after software updates.
As a platitude, I suggest you keep your system clean. In other words, don't install "cute" hacks that do "clever" things. Keep your software up to date by running software update periodically.
As mentioned earlier, a good backup/retreat strategy is invaluable. OS X has a feature called Time Machine. While it is not perfect, it has the advantage of automatically backong up your system on a regular basis. I "overkill" backups by making bootable clones of my iMacs using a little program called SuperDuper ($28 at www.shirt-pocket.com).

  • [ANNOUNCE] texlive-localmanager: A new utility for TeXLive users

I have just made available a new utility (shell + command-line) for locally managing a TeXLive installation under Arch.
You can get it from AUR: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=23776
    See the documentation under http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/TeX … al_Manager
NB: I am also the maintainer of the TeXLive packages in [extra].

Sorry, I should have been clearer in my post. I've written a tool called makerepo (more info here) that is able to create and maintain a repo of pkgs built from PKGBUILDs, the AUR, and CPAN (via pacpan).
Ah, funny! I did not know about pacpan. You're probably aware that I once wrote a similar tool: cpan4pacman?
I would like to add CTAN support to makerepo by using texlive-localmanager. In order to do this, it would need to be able to generate the PKGBUILDS, preferably all at once using an output separator as pacpan does (see the pacpan info page).
OK, I see. This should be easy.
What I meant by "3) a command to get the latest version of a package" (and I realize that it's unclear now) was a way to query what the latest version of the package is. Makerepo doesn't build all packages in the REPOBUILD every time it's run... it just checks what the latest version of each pkg is and compares it to the local version so that it only builds pkgs that are newer.
Again, this is clearer. Perhaps you could parse the output of tllocalmgr --status. (Or I could eventually add an option to make this output easier to reprocess?)
If "texlive-local-" is the preferred prefix for all non-official texlive packages, then I suppose there's no need for an option to change it. I simply wanted to provide anyone maintaining a texlive repo the option to produce uniform packages that follow the same naming convention as the official ones.
    Individual texlive-local-* packages go under $TEXMFLOCAL (i.e. /usr/local/share/texmf)
To manage and maintain the large texlive packages in extra, I have written my own tools Contact me privately if you are interested...

  • Is there a Java utility class to help with data management in a desktop UI?

Is there a Java utility class to help with data management in a desktop UI?
I am writing a UI to configure a network device that will be connected to the serial port of the computer while it is being configured. There is no web server or database for my application. The UI has a large number of fields (50+) spread across 16 tabs. I will write the UI in Java FX. It should run inside the browser when launched, and issue commands to the network device through the serial port. A UI has several input fields spread across tabs and one single Submit button. If a field is edited, and the submit button clicked, it issues a command and sends the new datum to the device, retrieves current value and any errors. so if input field has bad data, it is indicated for example, the field has a red border.
Is there a standard design pattern or Java utility class to accomplish the frequently encountered, 'generic' parts of this scenario? lazy loading, submitting only what fields changed, displaying what fields have errors etc. (I dont want to reinvent the wheel if it is already there). Otherwise I can write such a class and share it back here if it is useful.

  • I have a production mobile Flex app that uses RemoteObject calls for all data access, and it's working well, except for a new remote call I just added that only fails when running with a release build.  The same call works fine when running on the device

I have a production mobile Flex app that uses RemoteObject calls for all data access, and it's working well, except for a new remote call I just added that only fails when running with a release build. The same call works fine when running on the device (iPhone) using debug build. When running with a release build, the result handler is never called (nor is the fault handler called). Viewing the BlazeDS logs in debug mode, the call is received and send back with data. I've narrowed it down to what seems to be a data size issue.
I have targeted one specific data call that returns in the String value a string length of 44kb, which fails in the release build (result or fault handler never called), but the result handler is called as expected in debug build. When I do not populate the String value (in server side Java code) on the object (just set it empty string), the result handler is then called, and the object is returned (release build).
The custom object being returned in the call is a very a simple object, with getters/setters for simple types boolean, int, String, and one org.23c.dom.Document type. This same object type is used on other other RemoteObject calls (different data) and works fine (release and debug builds). I originally was returning as a Document, but, just to make sure this wasn't the problem, changed the value to be returned to a String, just to rule out XML/Dom issues in serialization.
I don't understand 1) why the release build vs. debug build behavior is different for a RemoteObject call, 2) why the calls work in debug build when sending over a somewhat large (but, not unreasonable) amount of data in a String object, but not in release build.
I have't tried to find out exactly where the failure point in size is, but, not sure that's even relevant, since 44kb isn't an unreasonable size to expect.
By turning on the Debug mode in BlazeDS, I can see the object and it's attributes being serialized and everything looks good there. The calls are received and processed appropriately in BlazeDS for both debug and release build testing.
Anyone have an idea on other things to try to debug/resolve this?
Platform testing is BlazeDS 4, Flashbuilder 4.7, Websphere 8 server, iPhone (iOS 7.1.2). Tried using multiple Flex SDK's 4.12 to the latest 4.13, with no change in behavior.
    Thanks!

After a week's worth of debugging, I found the issue.
The Java type returned from the call was defined as ArrayList.  Changing it to List resolved the problem.
I'm not sure why ArrayList isn't a valid return type, I've been looking at the Adobe docs, and still can't see why this isn't valid.  And, why it works in Debug mode and not in Release build is even stranger.  Maybe someone can shed some light on the logic here to me.

  • Is there a new mechanism to play mp3 file in Flex4?

    Hi All,
I am using the Flex 3 mp3 player, trying to load mp3 songs and having trouble canceling the file loading in case this is a big file (10Mg) and the user has pressed 'cancel'.
The user would expect that the mp3 file loading will stop, but in the network monitor i still see the file is beeing loaded.
Is there a way to solve this? Is there a new mp3 mechanism in Flex4?
    Thanks in advance,
    Lior

    Hi,
Compile this and see if it works for you, the mp3 is 6mb. the label shows the bytes being downloaded, as soon as you press stop the download is stopped. This shows in the progressevent, also it will continue to play becuase of the buffer but it will stop playing at the point where the close() was called.

  • Backup utility call failed

    Hello,
I upgraded recently the Oracle database from 10.2.0.4 to 11.2.0.2. (on AIX )
Since then, the backups do not more function correctly.
As in the BRBACKUP Action Log for Database, the following errors occured:
    - BR0232E 0 of 90 files saved by backup utility
    - BR0231E Backup utility call failed
    - Cannot reopen backint log file as stderr
So, I checked the permissions for /usr/sap/DIS/SYS/exe/run/backint, the path and permission are set properly.
I checked the also log '/nsr/applogs/backintSID.log' and I noted that the system does not write any more in this file since last successful backup (befor the Upgrade)
Many Thanks in advance for your help

My current Br*tools version is : BR0651I BRTOOLS 7.10 (30). I upgraded an other DEV System before, it has the same BRTOOLS version as my test system, and the backup works well.
Firstly, rename backintSID.log to backintSID.log.1 and start a new backup. By doing so, the system will try to create a new trace file. If it is not able to create trace file, check the permissions of its directory(/nsr/applogs). At the end of this operation, could you provide full trace?
Secondy, even you are able to execute the brtools 7.10 on your dev system, I still strongly recommend update it to 7.20. Check the note 12741 - Current versions of BRTools and SAPDBA
Thirdly, is brbackup forked by a 3rd party backup application or manually at the OS level by orasid user?
