Is there a noticeable difference from a 2gb ram to 8gb ram on 2.3ghz mac mini?

Just asking if it is worth upgrading to 8gb on my 2.3ghz mac mini with 2gb of ram in it.

Ram is so darn cheep.  I would always opt for more ram up to 8 GB just in case I need it someday.

If your Mini shipped with OS X 10.7 Lion, then it was considered a 2011 build model, or before.
The Mini 2012 model, is considered a Late 2012, & the last one where RAM could be upgraded.
And it shipped with Mountain Lion 10.8, which is a fairly OK system if one had older software.
(However mine shipped in Dec 2014, with Mavericks 10.9.0, and was built in January 2014.)
There were a few different build versions of Late 2012 Mac Mini, the i5 or i7 processor,
in dual-core or quad-core, and some CTO or built-to-order versions with other specs.
You can buy Mountain Lion from online Apple Store, & use a download code emailed to you to
get the Mt. Lion 10.8 from Apple Servers; this would be about it, since Mavericks isn't available.
So hopefully that is an option you can exercise; in addition the computer may prefer more RAM.
    Good luck & happy computing!

I cannot get the new mac mini to wake from sleep and trigger the displays - this is the second mac mini I have had and both have had the same issues. It worked before on my macbook extremely well...
Using 2 displays, connected via HDMI and thunderbolt
Been on to support a number of times now - is anyone experiencing the same issues?

    BUMP.
I actually showed this to Apple geniuses when I took my computer to the apple store, and it's still here. In console it says:
    kernel[0]: Previous Shutdown Cause: -128
I don't know if that's related or not, but maybe helps?

Can I use 2gb memory in one slot in my 2006 Mac mini as the 2 slots of 1gb only reports as 1gb memory, both memory work ok in the one slot as I have swapped them over

To my knowledge 1GB modules are the max. size for the 2006 Mini.
    2GB modules are not recognized/useable.
    Sorry

  • Is there any way to connect my Apple wireless/bluetooth trackpad and keyboard to my Mac Mini without using a wired or usb keyboard?

Is there any way to connect my Apple wireless/bluetooth trackpad and keyboard to my Mac Mini without using a wired or usb keyboard?

Well, I read that already, but I am trying to start up my Mac mini(new purchase) and I cannot get to all the system preferences etc since I cannot get past the startup screens. The site also mentioned waiting to turn on the keyboard until a language was requested. Neither language screen worked. I feel as though I'm just about ready to throw in the towel.

  • Is there a noticeable difference between Dual Core i7 and Quad Core i7?

    Hi everyone.
I'm going to be a college freshman this fall. I'm looking at 13" MacBook with Retina Display with dual core i7.   I'm also looking at the 15" MacBook Pro with Retina Display with Quad Core i7. I want to major in science and have a concentration in photography, which means that I will run programs like Excel, PowerPoint (or keynote), and Photoshop.
Anyways, will there be a noticeable difference between a Dual Core i7 processor and a Quad i7 processor?
    Thanks!

Ceteris Paribus, the quad-core will be twice as fast as the dual-core.

  • Difference Between 1GB & 2GB Ram

I'm hopefully buying a Mac Mini soon. I'm going to be using it for iTunes, photos, photoshop, and that's it. Do I really need 2GB or can I deal with 1GB? What would you guys suggest I get? I want to spend as LITTLE as possible. And can I upgrade it later on in life if I want to?

In my view it would be better to buy RAM from a third party - as long as the supplier offers an unconditional warranty and thus will swap any memory that proves problematic, even into the future. Typically such a supplier as crucial.com use memory that is the same as Apple supply, but at lower prices (often very much lower). In addition, if you buy from Apple you generally won't get to keep the original memory fitted to the system, which can be very useful for troubleshooting later on if needed.
Fitting it is a relatively simple process, but can be done by an Apple approved service provider if you are not comfortable doing it yourself. Charges for doing the work varies from place to place, so you might want to call a couple of service providers in your area to see what they charge for this.
Buying it from Apple as a build to order option with a new mini, or from an Apple store and having them fit the new memory, is the easiest option, but can add considerable extra cost since Apple rarely have competitive prices on memory.

  • Is there any hope of using iDVD 7 to burn DVDs (Leopard 10.6.6, Mac Mini)?

I've tried many of the suggestions in these discussions, short of reinstalling iDVD or wiping the hard drive and reinstalling OSX 10.6.6, and doing that seems excessive simply to use included Apple software. I have more than 260GB available on my hard drive, no external drives open (there are some connected both by FW and USB, but they are not even turned on, just connected to ports).
iDVD 7.1.1 won't even get past the menu before it fails and gives an error that the 'burn cannot be completed'. There are no 'extras' in the menu, simply ONE QT/iMovie/iDVD compliant 15-second video; no drop zones, no fancy anything, default text for the video 'button', no hyphens or special characters, simply one video from my camera and the application can't get past the menu.
Should I just go back to burning dvds from my powerbook G4 (tibook) through s-video to a dvd/vhs recorder?

Hi, and thanks for the quick response. Yes, I have deleted the iDVD preferences about a dozen times. I started out my first project with a positive attitude and set up to burn 4 videos (all non-copyrighted, from my own cameras and library), and decided to fill in some time with slide shows from pictures on the hard drive (not in iPhoto, but they showed up in the iDVD media area and tested fine following the iDVD 'how to' pdf.)
I had added audio (to the slides), but it was from an external 40-gb firewire drive, and one of the slide shows was from pics stored there.
I removed those externally-hosted files first, after trying several times to delete the plist file with no better results. Then I removed that hard drive from the picture and turned it off, so no external source files are in play.
I removed slide shows entirely from the media list after just removing them from the project and menu seemed to have no affect, partly since the error message mentions the 'menu/slideshows' in it's (boilerplate?) dialog box.
Tried 'burning a disc image' after each modification (reduction of number and length of files) to the project, based on recommendations here.
With each successive error (none of which got past the menu building phase) I removed another video file; deleted the menus entirely and tried 'new' menus, until I decided to remove all videos from the project and try just that one short 15-second video shot last week for posting on a web forum (it was not one of the original videos I hoped to use).
I shut off all 'drop zones' from the menus. I used the default fonts and text buttons that appear when you drag a file from the media list into the menu window.
I even tried rebooting the computer to clear any latent memory that might be causing a problem (as a 'shot in the dark'). After every change, I quit the project and iDVD and deleted the plist, then restarted iDVD and tried again. All to no avail.
I'm on a budget, that's why I downgraded from my old iMac G5 when it died and switched to the Mac Mini aluminum 4,1, and I'm not looking to upgrade my now useless Toast 5xx to a compatible Toast 10 (even if that might work).
    To recap:
    I started out full-bore with video and photos and music (latter two for slide shows);
After confirming everything worked together and there were no errors showing in the map view, and running through the slides and video files several times to make sure they 'worked', I tried to burn the disc (no disc image at this point, just a confident full-blown burn). Got the error in the menu phase.
Started reading the discussions forum (this place) for a couple hours looking at what problems others were having, and trying the suggestions posed therein. No luck.
Then decided to try deleting preference plist and creating a 'disc image' on the desktop of the entire original project. No luck.
Then multiple incremental changes to the original project until I was left with the single movie file to see if any of my original media files might be the problem. (I even made sure there were no special characters in the titles, menu buttons, etc of any of those files, as someone mentioned the menus don't like any 'special characters'.)
So, here we are. I am wondering if maybe the Mini is just not powerful enough to handle burning dvds? (It seems like it isn't platform based, since iDVD doesn't even get through the menu phase). This Mac Mini is about 1 month old.

When I tried to issue print from my Windows 7 laptop the printer gets activated the power button start blinking . But it just pass a page from

I just updated to 10.8.3 today, and my computer and Apple TV won't even recognize each other now.  I have absolutely no advice, but wanted to throw this in so you (and Apple) know you're not the only one.

  • Booting from an external drive 10.3.2 with new i7 mac mini

How to boot from an external drive with 10.3.2 using a new i7 mac mini. Seems to be a build problem?

Your Mac is incapable of running 10.3.2. The version of OS X 10.3 is PowerPC only and your Mac has an Intel processor.
Why do you want to do that?

  • Is there a noticeable difference between a 1.83 and 2.00 GHz processor?

I am new to apple, and this will be my first Apple laptop computer. I am looking for a laptop that is powerful enough to run programs such as Adobe Photoshop (no more than one photo at a time) and other basic programs such as Microsoft Office. I will be doing no video or gaming. Can you tell me if there is a reason to upgrade from the 1.83GHZ to the 2.00 GHz processor? Thank you.

You are only looking at a difference of 170Mhz. As far as I know the processors are the same except for clock speed. I do not think that you will notice any difference in the two processors for smaller jobs like applying a filter in Photoshop or running a spell check in Office. The 2Ghz will edge ahead for longer term tasks such as editing and compressing video. If something takes 1 hour to compress into "quicktime" (IE. h.264) you may see the 2Ghz MB finish 10 minutes sooner.
Bottom line, from what you are describing, I do not think you will do anything that will be too terribly intensive to notice the difference in speed now. But I always advise to people to buy as FAST as they can afford. Your computer will stay faster for longer. In a few years that extra little bit of speed can come in handy as programs continue to becomes more complex. Somthing intaresting about your situation right now is that Both Office and Photoshop are not Intel native for the Mac, so they will need to be emulated by Rosetta. While it is supposed to be seemless, rosetta is emulated so it is slower. You will get a noticable boost in speed if you upgrade to the native (or Universal) version of these programs when they are made available.
OK, I have blabbed on enough. Hope this helps shed some light on things. (Personally I would go with the 2Ghz.)

  • Is the 8gb worth it compared to the 4gb?  Is there a noticeable difference between a i5 and i7 core processor?

I am looking to buy a 13 inch mac book pro.  I know that there is a 4gb version with a i5 core processor and also a 8gb with a i7 core processor.  I am wondering if buying the upgraded one is worth the money.  I play World of Warcraft so I am also wondering if the upgraded one will play the game better.  Thanks.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
The 13-inch MacBook Pro won't work correctly with the game. Go for a 15-inch MacBook Pro or an iMac. That's caused because of the GPU. The 13-inch MacBook Pro has only got an integrated GPU that isn't designed for games.
Apart from that, if you are decided to buy the 13-inch MacBook Pro, get it with 4 GB of RAM. You can upgrade it to 8 GB yourself and you will save money without voiding your warranty. Also, for games, you will note the difference with an Intel Core i7, even if the Intel Core i7 that has got the 13-inch MacBook Pro isn't the best i7

  • Is there a big difference from the 2009 vs 2011 Macbook pro 15?

I also would like to know if there is a big difference between the 2009 vs 2011 macbook Pro 15"?If so is it enough to make me want a BRAND NEW MACBOOK PRO 15"?

    Yes!
    The new macbook pro has:
    1. Faster processors, with option for QUAD Core!
    2. Thunderbolt!
    3. Larger harddrive
    4. Better camera (HD)
Also, Lion is now available! If you buy the old one, you would have to pay extra to upgrade to lion later.
