Is there a point?

Last night I finally tried to install the new iOS4 onto my iPhone 3G. Like most people, it was nothing but problems. I waited over 2 hours for it to backup, before I finally gave in, and stopped it. I tried again thinking something had just glitched on it. It happened again, so I stopped it again and gave up. I googled any problems with it, and low and behold, its a common issue.
I have read many posts about how it will download faster if you backup, and then do a restore on your phone. I'm not sure if this will cause more problems in the end. I use windows, not a mac, and I have heard people having issues with restoring. I'm not really willing to lose half my stuff over a new OS.
I read further and found out that the new update is slowing the iPhone 3G down to a horrible speed. Because the 3G isn't already slow enough after 2 years? Lol.
Is there a point to downloading the new OS? Are there actually some good experiences with it out there? Someone? Anyone?
I am upgrading to the new iPhone 4 as soon as Apple lets Canada have it. (Thanks for screwing Canada again Apple!) So I'm undecided whether this is worth it for me to waste the next 8 hours loading something onto my working 3G or if I should just wait an extra month or 2 for the new iPhone4.
Thanks! =)

I would wait for the new phone to come to you. when i tried the update i lost my pictures, settings and ringtones on my phone. i had to sit on the phone with apple for an hour to reset my phone because the update corrupted my old backup folder in itunes with all my stuff in it. not worth the update for the 3g because it doesnt give you all the features like multitasking...and i have found it has slowed my phone down alot..apple is also only releasing like 1 million new phones a month so you may be waiting longer than 2 months. even people who pre-ordered are being pushed back because so many people have wanted this phone but still worth the wait i think.

  • Is there any point in having an ORDER BY clause within a FOR LOOPs counter?

    DB Version:10.2.0.1.0
I need to loop through empno's using a FOR loop. But is there any point in having an Order by clause within SQL as shown below. This only degrades the performance because of the unnecessary sorting by the ORDER BY clause. Right?
    begin
FOR i IN (select empno from emp ORDER BY sal ASC) LOOP
        curr_stat_id := i.empno +p_gennum;
    .

First question you should ask to your self is
"Do i need a FOR LOOP. Cant i do it in a straight SQL"
If the answer is NO (Which is not in several cases) then the next question is.
    "What is my requirement"
Having an order by in the Select is totally pertained to your requirement. If your requirement
says you should loop through the employee based on there salary for lowest to highest then yes you
    need an order by.
So more than performance point of view its requirement point of you. But if you are more concern about
performance you will first ask to your self
"Do i need a FOR LOOP. Cant i do it in a straight SQL"
    Thanks,
    Karthick.

  • With older imacs, is there a point when you SHOULDN'T upgrade to latest OS?

I may have worded that poorly but basically what I'm after is this: I know Apple lists the compatible Macs going back X number of years with each OS update, but is there a point where one is better off staying put with say Mountain Lion on iMac 21.5 Late 2009 (12GB RAM) vs. updating to Mavericks and eventually Yosemite.  Obviously, the newer the machine the better apt it is to take advantage of the newer OS, however will taking on latest OS actually slow down an old Mac?  Is this making any sense?

I disagree. My 2009 MacBook ran Mavericks very well. Better, gasp, than Snow Leopard.
Mavericks is designed to be more efficient than previous OSes and should run well on the hardware that Apple says will support it.
If you're alrady running Mavericks, I wouldn't downgrade. As you guess, you'll have problems with existing apps you've installed that may not work with 10.6. Not to mention the lack of security updates. You'll be exposing yourself to all sorts of known vulnerabilities by downgrading.
Stay are you are. You might not see the value in upgrading to Yosemite, but I wouldn't backtrack now.

  • Is there any point in a G4 render farm?

    Hi all.
I've been getting quite intrested in the idea of setting up a very small render farm laterly as I have the option of getting some old G4s for free.
I currently have a 2.0Ghz DP G5 as my main mac running FCP2 and Shake and was already grabbing a G4 466 digital audio to set up as a file/print and back up server running tiger server, a postscript RIP and retrospect. I have the possibility of getting atleast one more G4 466 DA and maybe a couple of G4 400 AGPs with Gigbit ethernet cards. As the main use would be farming out DV to mpg2 compression via compressor and shake renders (though not large shake stuff to begin with as very new to this) is there any point in looking into this or am I going to need to lots of G4s to make a real improvement in render times.
Also is RAM a major consideration. For example if I got 4 G4s with say 512Mb ram would it be better runing all four or using three but nicking the fours ram to give more ram in the three machine set up?
    Any advice would be appreciated
    Cheers
    Steve

I vote no. G4 isn't the problem so much as 400mhz is. The ram shouldn't be a problem.
But you could test if you set up Compressor on one G4. Compress a job. Compress the same job with the same settings on the G5.
If the G5 is 4 times (or even 3, since time is spent sending the render data over the network between the G4's slow system busses) as fast the single G4, a render farm will not help you.
Using the G4 and G5 together in the same cluster does not work because Compressor looks at all processors and divides the job into twice as many segments. In this case, the G5 finishes it's two segments years before the G4's and then sits around waiting. You could try splitting the G5 into 4 instances, but then you have 8 slow processors attacking your job. Not very efficient.
Good luck though. You should test the one G4 just so you know. Report back if you do.

  • Is there a "pointer arrow" or similar feature in iMovie HD?

Is there a "pointer arrow" or similar feature in iMovie HD that can be used to highlight a specific object (in this case a person) in iMovie HD? My son is making a soccer highlight video of himself for college coaches, and we would like to, in some way, point him out in movie clips so coaches will know which player he is of all the players on the clip.

    Doug,
    You're using iMovie HD, right?
If that's the case Gee Three makes a plugin called Whiteboard that might be what you're looking for.
It's part of their Slick Volume 6. You'll have to buy the whole package to get it.
    http://www.geethree.com/slick/galleries/s6demopages/s6whiteboard2.html
There is also Movie Canvas from cf/x which can be purchased individually.
    http://www.imovieplugins.com/plugs/moviecanvas.html
Note: These plugins will work with iMovie HD but not iMovie '08 or '09.

  • Is there a "pointer arrow" or similar feature in Final Cut Express HD?

Is there a "pointer arrow" or similar feature in Final Cut Express HD? We would like to point out my son (on the soccer field) in a soccer video we are preparing for college coaches? Thanks!

If you email me I can email you a free pack of around 100 effects, one of which is an excellent arrow generator.

  • Is there a point in buying HD movies on iTunes?

I have a 13.3" MacBook Pro, Basic model.  I was browsing movies on iTunes and was thinking of buying one.  It's $9.99 for the regular version and $12.99 for the HD version.  My husband said there's no point in buying the HD version as my computer will show the exact same quality.  Is he correct???

My laptop is less than a month old, if that helps.  I just got it last month (Apple Store).

  • Why are there exclamation points on my purchases?

A lot of the music i purchased on itunes wont play because there is an exclamation point on it and if I want to play it it says that it cannot play do i wish to locate it?

I tried repopulating. The problem still was occurring.
What ended up working around the problem was to reconvert the files from AAC to AAC. That process somehow solved whatever was the problem with the files. Not ideal, since that is a bit of a loss of quality.

  • Disabling Management via Wireless - is there any point?

    Hey guys.
Firstly, yes, I do know that allowing management of controllers over an unsecured WLAN is a bad idea (although even that would be SSL-secured by default, but open to brute-forcing I'd guess).
Secondly, let's assume that Management via Dynamic Interfaces is disabled too (why anyone would want to enable that is a bit beyond me too?).
This 1 little tickbox manages to justify an entire page in the GUI, so it definitely looks pretty darn important!
The problem is that in a multi-controller environment the only controller that knows you're connecting over wireless is the one that you're connecting through. Any other controller will be happy to accept the management connection on it's management interface address because it sees it as coming from the wired network. To prevent this from happening I think you could do either of two things...
    1) Apply a CPU ACL that blocks the client IP ranges, which will work equally well for wireless and wired-side connections, i.e. it's the equivalent of the "management via wireless" setting but works for all controllers simultaneously. You'd have to remember to keep this updated though if ever your WLANs and client ranges change.
    2) Put the management interfaces of all controllers in an isolated management VLAN (which will potentially complicate all your supporting services access, e.g. DHCP/RADIUS/etc.). That'll stop the undesirable "wired" access on the n-1 controllers and then the mgmt-via-wireless will take care of the wireless access to the other 1 controller.
So the setting seems rather pointless on it's own in anything other than in a single-controller environment. I'm sure I've read somewhere that the controllers do tell each other about their current clients (for things like CCKM and rogue management), so wouldn't it be cool if this centralised awareness logic was applied to management connections?
What are the experiences out there with this feature? Is it generally seen as worthwhile, or does it really need some extra planning and possible augmentation via other features to be of any value?
In general, other than popular paranoia about wireless being "less secure" than wired access, what are the compelling reasons for denying management via wireless? As I mentioned above, even over a completely non-secured WLAN you'd still have SSL/SSH security if you configure your allowed management protocols right.
    Thanks,
    Justin

Yes "It makes the auditors happy" is definitely a good and valid reason.
I've just co-incidentally come across this in the 5.0.148 release notes:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/wireless/controller/release/notes/crn501480.html#wp234100
"Preventing Clients from Accessing the Management Network on a Controller
To prevent or block a wired or wireless client from accessing the management network on a controller (from the wireless client dynamic interface or VLAN), the network administrator should ensure that there is no route through which to reach the controller from the dynamic interface or use a firewall between the client dynamic interface and the management network."
That makes sense, but do many folks out there do it that way? Generally there's not much control between the management VLAN and the users' VLAN because the latter is usually where the wireless-supporting services reside.

  • Is there any point in installing flash player 11.8.800 +

I keep getting an invitation every time I reboot to install an update of Adobe Flash Player 11.8.800 16.9 mbs into my Dell vostro 1500 laptop in the U.K. with Vista.
I have tried to install it but it always fails to complete installation. I can find no information as to whether installing this update will be of any value, as I rarely use Adobe, and when I do everything works ok, so what on earth is the point of these habitual updating invitations? Will I suffer in any way if I just ignore them because they will not download.
Also with the invitation it also indicates it will install McAfeesecurity scan plus. What the hell is that? What has it got to do with an Adobe flash player. I did have McAfee securty a long time ago but found it poor compared to AVG so i now have AVG installed paid for till 2014 and do not want to go back to McAfee.Anyway I understood that if you have any virus security system, you should not attempt to install a a rival virus security system because they are likely to interfere with one another so increase your chances of getting a virus. So why am I being advised to install this with the Adobe flash player that I keep being invited to install. It all sounds like a big scam to me? Can someone please enlighten me. Thanking you

Do you get any error messages when trying to install?
Anyway, try the offline installer from http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/installation-problems-flash-player-windows.html#mai n-pars_header (under the heading Progress bar hangs...).
As for the bundled 3rd-party software, the offline installer does not contain any.

  • Is there any point in getting it?

I have an iPod Touch 4th generation and I love it. As soon as i heard about the IOS 7 and saw pictures, I did some research on it, and found out it won't be for my generation, only 5th. Should I save money and get the 5th generation? I'm scared that as soon as I finally get it, the 6th generation will come out shortly after, and there will be an IOS 8, just for that one. This is where Apple comes into being a terrible company because they abandon all of the products before the newest one.

SAving your money is a good idea, but wait until iOS 7 is actually available, before making a decision. You may decide on an iPhone, or iPad/iPad mini, or maybe they will have announced the next generation product.
iOS 7 could be as much a 5 months away, as "Fall" does no officially end until mid December

  • Is there a point to Safari?

Genuine question not meant to “inflame” passions.
Made the switch to Mac about a year ago (still running XP PC for work). Have been using Firefox on PC and now on Mac. I occasionally have started up Safari, but for the life of me cannot see any upside over Firefox. Is there some Safari functionality I’m missing?

    12" Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

There are close to a dozen excellent browsers available for OS X and each of them has its adherents. Which browser to use on OS X is a highly subjective matter and it comes down to the best one is the one that you like and suits you best. Many people prefer Safari over all others. It is one of the least forgiving of browsers when it comes to rendering non-standard, incorrect, or sloppy code. It happens to be the browser produced by Apple, but that does not mean it has to be anyone's primary or preferred browser.
If you like Firefox and you still use Windows, then Firefox is an excellent choice because it is available on both platforms (you could also look at Opera which is also available on both platforms).
If you are not sure that Firefox is the best browser for you, then I suggest you try the alternatives in turn to see what you like and don't like. Some of the offerings include:
Amaya For developers & testing code - not for everyday browsing!
    Camino
    Firefox
    iCab
Internet Explorer Abandoned by Microsoft and outdated, but some people still like it
    Mozilla Suite of Internet tools
Netscape Basically a branded Mozilla suite of Internet tools
    OmniWeb

  • Is there a point to upgrade from 4GB to 8GB?

    Hi
I have a MacBook Pro Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHz with 4GB memory (2010).
I want to upgrade my hard drive from 250(5400rpm) to a 500GB or bigger (7200rpm).
So I'm thinking since I'm already upgrading, should I get more memory?
I find it sluggish at times, but I've been blaming the hard drive for the most part.
But I'm wondering if doubling my memory would make an even bigger impact on the performance?
I will be doing some Final Cut at some point and video converting, so I'm wondering if the extra memory would be worth it?
*Yes I know it's a small machine for Final Cut. But I had a Mac Pro until I quite my job, so buying it I never thought I would need more power :-S
Anyway, let me know what you think. Thanks.

I would recommend getting a solid state drive rather than a faster hard drive, that would make a far greater difference than upgrading from a 5400RPM HDD to one that spins at 7200RPM and either replace your optical drive with a second hard drive or using an external drive for non-essential storeage. I'd also upgrade the RAM because 2x4GB of DDR3-1066 RAM is super cheap right now, I added 8GB of RAM from Crucial to my 2008 MacBook Unibody for around $80.
