Is There A Preferred Method for Backing Up Source Video?

Having put together my first movies (using both iMovie 06 and 08), I am staring at several gigs of video clips on my hard drive that I would like to archive off. But I don't quite know what to do to be sure that I am storing the original source clips (in case I want to re-edit at some later date).
I see that the clips are stored on the drive in iMovie packages; should I just copy these off to remote media? How compatible are these packages with other programs? Are the packages readable under other operating systems? Should I back up the clip files only?
TIA,
David

As I noted in my original post, I used both 06 and 08, due to a complicated set of circumstances that I won't go into here. Winston seems to be saying that I should copy the source files directly off the camera to DVD, which supports my original question. I will have to figure out how to do this. I presume I will plug the camera into the computer, and then use Finder to burn the files directly to DVD.
So far, I have made copies (both to DVD and network drive) of the 08 events, 06 projects, iDVD project file, the iDVD archive, and the iDVD img. All of which is why I was asking the question in the first place.
Thanks all for the help,
David

  • What are the preferred methods for backing up a cluster node bootdisk?

    Hi,
    I would like to use flarcreate to backup the bootdisks for each of the nodes in my cluster... but I cannot see this method mentioned in any cluster documentation...
    Has anybody used flash backups for cluster nodes before (and more importantly - successfully restored a cluster node from a flash image..?)
    Thanks very much,
    Trevor

    Hi, some backround on this - I need to patch some production cluster nodes, and obviously would like to backup the rootdisk of each node before doing this.
    What I really need is some advice about the best method to backup & patch my cluster node (with a recovery method also).
    The sun documentation for this says to use ufsdump, which i have used in the past - but will FLAR do the same job? - has anyone had experiance using FLAR to restore a cluster node?
    Or if someone has some other solutions for patching the nodes? - maybe offline my root mirror (SVM) - patch root disk - barring any major problems - online the mirror again??
    Cheers, Trevor

  • Is there any native method for converting String value to Hungarian notat..

    Hello. there.
    This might be very simple question. but I'm just curious about this.
    I am wondering if Java API offer the any native method for converting uppercased string value to lowercase which obey the Hungarian notation.
    What I'm going to do is using Reflection for excuting RFC function on SAP. I was found it is very similar to JDBC Programming.
    Please refer to blow codes.
    //mTable
    JCoTable mTable = function.getTableParameterList().getTable(rtnTblNm);
        for (int i = 0; i < mTable.getNumRows(); i++) {
         mTable.setRow(i);
         HashMap tmpData = new HashMap ();
              for (int j=0; j < mTable.getNumColumns(); j++) {
                     // I want to set key String [userNo] instead of  [USER_NO] here.
              tmpData.put(mTable.getMetaData().getName(j).toLowerCase(), mTable.getString(j));
              result.add(tmpData);
    } Basically, The idea was from ibatis framework [com.ibatis.common.beans.classInfo] dropcase();
    Any idea would be very helpful for me. Thank you.

    So your title is very confusing to the people here who know what it means, which is probably all of them, because people read threads based on their title.From now on, I will pay more attention when I post an question.
    If the titile as " +Is there any native method for converting String value to camelcase?"+ would be easier to what i'm pointing at.
    As I mentioned in above sorce code, converting [USER_NO] to [userNo] isn't relevant Hungarian notation. yes, it was ambiguous. Agree! :)
    But some answer wasn't fit to converting case or recognizing "underscore" delimiter. I was expecting toCamelCase() such as blew. Thanks.
        public static String toCamelCase(String name) {
            String lowerName = name.toLowerCase();
            String[] pieces = lowerName.split("_");
            if (pieces.length == 1) {
                return lowerName;
            StringBuffer result = new StringBuffer(pieces[0]);
            for (int i = 1; i < pieces.length; i++) {
                result.append(Character.toUpperCase(pieces.charAt(0)));
    result.append(pieces[i].substring(1));

  • What is the best method for backing up photos in IPhoto?

    I have over 10,000 photos in IPhoto and am looking for the best method for doing a backup (or an archive?).  I'm now using ICloud and it appears it's just photo streaming and does not have storage capability. External hard drive, copying to a DVD, other suggestions?

    Most Simple Back Up
    Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
    Slightly more complex:
    Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically. Examples of such apps: Chronosync or DejaVu . But are many others. Search on MacUpdate
    My Routine
    My Library lives on my iMac. It’s Backed up to  two external hard disks every day. These disks are permanently attached to the iMac. These back ups run automatically. One is done by Time Machine, one is a bootable back up done by SuperDuper
    It’s also backed up to a portable hard disk when ever new photos are added. This hard disk lives in my car. For security, this disk is password protected.
    I have a second off-site back up at a relative’s house across town. That’s updated every 3 or 4 months.
    My Photos are backed up online. There are many options: Flickr, Picasa, SmugMug etc. However, check the terms of your account carefully. While most sites have free uploading, you will often find that these uploads are limited in terms of the file size or the bandwidth you can use per month. For access that allows you to upload full size pics with no restrictions you may need to pay.
    Every couple of months I test the back ups to make sure they are working correctly. It’s very easy to mis-configure a back up application, and the only way to protect against that is to do a trial restore.

  • Methods for backing up/cloning Bootcamp partition from inside OSX

    The key here is from inside OS X, not from inside Windows (XP).
    The only reason in the world I have to run Windows is because a Mac version of my accounting system doesn't exist. Well, there is also the fact that some companies still develop portions of their partner websites around IE instead of around open standards cough*CISCO*cough.
    Anyway, I have a bootcamp partition and the data on it is very important (accounting system!). I run it once, maybe twice a month and it's already slow enough as Kaspersky AV runs on every bootup so I don't want to add anything to the Windows bootup. I'm looking for a method of backing up (incremental capable) or cloning (incremental capable) my Bootcamp partition from inside OS X in conjunction with the other backups I do - well, now I use Time Machine so "the other backups I do" is moot, until I backup my Time Machine partition too (been bitten by the "backups not being there when you need them for some really random, unexpected reason" bug too before).
    It seems that most of the cloning tools I've tried can't clone or even backup FAT partitions. Anyone have any ideas, suggestions or previous experiences they wouldn't mind sharing?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hmm, functional but not exactly what I'm looking for. Thanks for the info though -
    - Is there a tool around that can do incremental backups instead of full backups every time it's run? WinClone 1.6b doesn't seem to be able to do incremental backups.
    - Is there a tool around that fits the above requirement, but can be scheduled (or even automator'd)? Automation is a good thing The more maintenance tasks we (users) have to do manually, the more there is to forget to do.

  • Methods for Backing Up Address Book

    I'm researching two methods of backing up my Address Book information.
    1.) Choosing "Back up Address Book" from the File menu in the Address Book application. This creates a .abbu file with the date attached for you to save in any location you specify.
    2.) Copying the entire "Address Book" folder from ~Library/Application Support/. This will include the files: (ABPerson.skIndex, ABPerson.skIndexInverted, AddressBook.data, AddressBook.data.beforesave, AddressBook.data.previous, Images)
    My question: Is there a difference in these two methods? If I restore from method #1 will my results be different then restoring from method #2.
    Why I'm asking: I'm using Retrospect to back up all my data to an external drive periodically. By using Retrospect, I'd have to use method #2 since it's an automated task.
    Thanks in Advance,

  • Is there a reliable method for detecting that a query is too large?

    I am writing some code (that uses OCI) to properly detect when a query string is too long for OCI and/or the Oracle database server. I can't find any specific error code information in the docs, so I just started firing off large queries to see what would happen.
    The queries I am sending are >2MB in size, up to 16MB. If the queries are above ~10MB, I get the error "ORA-03113 'End-of-file on communications channel'" after a fairly short amount of time (i.e. not enough for a timeout to expire). If the queries are below ~10MB, but above ~2.5MB, it either just sits there and does not do anything (for more than 15 hours). So watching for ORA-03113 when executing large queries does not seem like a very reliable method for detecting the queries that are too large.
    Does anyone know of a reliable way of detecting that a query is too large for the OCI client and/or the Oracle database server?
    I am using version 10.2.0.1 for both the OCI client and the Oracle database server, but I'm getting similar errors for combinations of 10.2.0.1 and 9.2.0.7 for both the OCI client and the Oracle database server.
    These large queries need to be handled properly (i.e. distinguished from some generic failure) because the server handles requests from users, which could be programs that generate SQL queries (and have constructed huge ones in the past).
    Thanks for any information!

    The ORA-03113 means that the Oracle server process has died trying to satisfy your request. In almost all cases it is strictly correct to call that a bug, and we shouldn't easily forgive the server process when it happens. But in the case of multimegabyte statements my anger and disapointment turns to sympathy, for in my heart I can't bring myself to blame it. Can you?

  • Best method for backing up macbook air?

    Please tell me what would be the best method to back up my macbook air?

    Yes, this i know, Since I have nearly 100 HD laying around, when I clone my system, its bootable, and the second HD becomes the defacto recovery
    at the very worst, you can reload the OS online.       But yes, youre correct, but Superduper is FREE, and CCC surely isnt.
    as a "clone it all" option, Superduper is great for HD upgrading and emergency backup for laptop HD.  Since laptops HD are prone to failure (not SSD as in the AIR), keeping a cloned backup is a great idea.
    But yes, your right, ......I consider a second cloned HD a "recovery HD", ......but not in the sense you imply.......
    An ERROR that both superduper and CCC make in a CLONE, however, is they write the BOOT FILES in a diff. location, so if you install the replacement HD after a crash, it will (not 1st time which is always slow) cause slightly slower startup from poweron.......in which case you have to reinstall the OS on the CLONE...........that IS if you care that much about a few extra seconds boot time on your replacement cloned HD.
    But LION and MOUNTAIN LION systems *also* have "Network Recovery", which can download and install without a recovery volume.

  • What is the Oracle supported method for backing up OCFS2?

    Hi
    My customer has been trying to backup Oracle Cluster File System (ver 2) with netbackup 6.5, but not via RMAN.
    They want to know if this method of backing OCFS up is suppported?
    But I think the supported method has to use a netbackup Oracle agent and RMAN
    Can anybody confirm this please?
    Regards
    jethro_p

    The recommended method is thru RMAN only. Directly backing up OCFS thru netbackup is not a reliable backup.
    We faced an critical oracle error & the database went down. We are not able to bring the database with the direct backup thru veritas. Then we restored the database only thru rman backup.

  • Best Method for converting a 16x9 video to a letterboxed 4x3 DVD

    I'm not quite sure what would be the best method for this.  My client is using a 4x3 screen and SD projector at a large meeting, and they want me to just create a DVD that is letterboxed.  I have one Premiere CS5 project that's 1920x1080, and another project that's 720x480 widescreen (1.2).  I created a new sequence in both projects that is 720x480, 4x3 (0.9), and what I do is just scale the timeline down so that it's letterboxed.  Is this the best method for achieving this?  Or would you do something else?  I don't like the idea of scaling my timeline down in Premiere.

    Hello.
    As Jim so rightly points out above, you do not need to do anything.
    Just use your normal 16:9 widescreen footage, and author as normal.
    Your player will letterbox automatically when it is connected to a 4:3 screen in setup (just make sure "Pan & Scan" is not also there)

  • Method for backing up connection data?

    I am moving to a new workstation. I need a way to back up my
    connection data, because I manage multiple sites using Contribute
    and it's a pain to reestablish the dialing directory. Contribute
    does not appear to have an easy "export connections directory"
    function. Is there a file I can copy?

    A few other notes on backup and backup material. The previous article on DVD backup not withstanding, not all writable DVD's are equal. A very good article on this subject can be found here:
    http://adterrasperaspera.com/blog/2006/10/30/how-to-choose-cddvd-archival-media/
    Part of my other day job is IT administration at a small semiconductor company. We, like most other companies, do ALL of our backup to tape. Our tapes are not MiniDV but DLT's. We store all of our tapes off site in a environmentally controlled storage facility. I suspect you like me cannot afford something like this for our video work but at a minimum this does mean you should not stuff your tapes in a box and stick them in the attic.
    Another thing to note that backup means you should, at minimum, have 2 copies of your critical files on two different pieces of hardware. If you keep all of your project files on your working system disk in your Mac and a copy of those files on an external drive you are pretty safe in your backup. If you ONLY keep one copy on that external drive, you are playing with fire. Especially when it comes to hard drive. Hard drive failure is the numero uno failure mechanism in computers, followed by power supplies. It is not a question of if a drive is going to fail, simply when.
    For me, I run a RAID 5 1.2TB linux server on my home network. I keep my working files on my MacPro and backup to the server. I'm paranoid square so in addition to that, I back up my RAID to two 500GB portable external drives on a periodic basis. For me, hard drives and media is dirt cheap as opposed to trying to replace important data that is lost or in many cases, irreplaceable.

  • What is the best method for backing up movies?

    I've been using Handbrake to rip out movies that I OWN so I can watch them on my apple tv. Everything works great, I'm just wondering what the best way to back up these files is. Any ideas?
    I own about 400 DVD's and would like to have them all in my Itunes Library so I can watch them in my apple tv. I've spent many many many many hours with Handbrake and putting them on external firewire hard drives and I really love this system. I can watch any movie any time without loading up my DVD.
    BUT, I would hate to have a hard drive failure and loose all of this time I've spent doing this. Any ideas on the best way to back up these movie.MP4 files? I guess I could burn a ton of DVD's, but I'm guesssing there is another easier way.
    And PLEASE, leave out the copyright comments, I BOUGHT these DVD's, and there is NO reason I shouldnt be able to watch them on my apple tv...
    thanks,
    Brown.Recluse

    I'm in a similar situation including movies I've purchased from iTunes...
    Here's my setup:
    I have all my iTunes data (music, movies, etc.) as well as about 10 GB of photos stored on a nework storage device that uses RAID-5 with SATA disks. This is basically a little toaster-sized NAS machine with four hard drives in it (www.infrant.com). If one of these drives dies, I get alerted and can insert a new one without missing a beat since the data is stored redundantly across all drives. I can also just yank out any one of the four drives while the thing is running and my data is still safe (I tried this after I bought it as a test).
    That's how I prevent problems with a single disk... Redundancy
    Now onto "backups"...
    Nightly, my little RAID toaster automatically backs itself up to an attached 250GB USB drive. However, these backups are only of my critical data... documents, photos and home movies... I don't bother backing up my "Hollywood" movies since I can live without them in a disaster.
    ... I actually don't permanently store anything I care about on a laptop or a desktop. It all goes on the NAS box (Network Sttached Storage) and then my other computers use it as a network drive. It's attached via Gigbait to my main computer and via wireless to most everything else.
    My achilles heel is that I don't store anything outside of my house yet. If I was smart, I'd alternate two USB drives attached to my NAS box and always keep one of them somewhere else (Safe Deposit Box?).
    ...and that's just one way to do it.
    -Brian

  • HT1229 What is the best method for backing up iPhoto photos?

    Should I copy the full library to a backup disk? Should I copy individual albums? Should I copy individual jpg photos?
    How to restore the saved copy to Iphoto in the event that the original version suffers a hard drive crash.
    I am running an older version of iPhoto on a G5 iMac on OSX 10.4.1. The iPhoto version is version 5.

    Yes you can just drag the iPhoto librarhy to the external - CCC (and SuperDuper )  is great in that after the first copy it just updates the clone
