Is there a quick way to convert mpg files for use in imovie?

Prefferable a way I can select a group of files to import into imovie, which is not much of a hassle to do.
thanks

Get MPEG Streamclip (which is free).
It has a batch mode so you can do a lot of clips at a time and let it run.
If they are MPEG2 files you may also need the Apple QuickTIme MPEG2 Playback COmponent ($20). MPEG Streamclip should tell you if you need it.
I usually use FILE/EXPORT TO QUICKTIME/Apple Intermediate Codec, but you could also use DV, h,264, etc.
Drag your completed clips to a new folder in Movies/iMovie Events. (Or to multiple folders if you want to make multiple events)
Or if you want to store them on an external drive which is formatted as Mac OS Extended (journaled), drag them to a folder inside a Folder at the top level called iMovie Events.
Start iMovie and it should recognize the new folders as new events and it will start generating thumbnails.

  • How do you convert .AVI files for using in iMovie without losing the original clip time and date

Hi everyone! does anyone know how to convert .AVI files for using in iMovie without losing the original clip time and date? Handbrake, MPEG Streamclip and Evon all replace the original timecode with the date of modification. This is very frustrating when you are trying to keep the chronology right. I know that if you upload the files to iMovie from one device the chronology isn't a problem, but I'm adding video files from a couple of iPhones and a couple of camcorders. any help much appeciated.

  • Converting wmv files for use in imovie 9 for users who have pc

To convert wmv files use your pc windows movie maker. (if you have one) On your pc, open windows movie maker, get collections and get your wmv project/video, drag it into the timeline, and then save in your computer, save it as an avi file and rename it. After send file to your memory card reader, that way you can transfer that file onto your mac!! And voila! I tried to email it but file became too large so transfering it to a memory card is the easiest. This took me days to figure out, I hope I have helped someone out there.....

I don't want to use DV because these .m2t files are from an HDV camcorder and I want to preserve the aspect ratio and resolution in the files. What other "flavor" of HD would you suggest that I convert them to since (a) I can't bring the files into FCP6 or Compressor (b) I don't see any other flavors of HD to use in VisualHub.
The whole business of converting .m2t files to a FCP6 compatible format, i.e. a Quicktime format, would seem to be one that is commonly encountered, and yet I have never found a thread on this forum that really answers this question: What is the best workflow for converting .m2t files for use in FCP? Surely, one of the pros who frequent this forum must have dealt with this issue and have an answer.
I don't want to have to recapture the files from tape all over again just to use them in FCP6.

  • Convert .mpg files to use in iMovie HD6

I have 8mm cine film converted to DVDs. I have 2 versions - one which I can play and view on the mac or on my TV. The other version has the original .mpg files. I want to edit the movie to take a short clip to send to someone but iMovie can't recognise the .mpg files. Do I need to convert the .mpg file before it will open in iMovie? If so, what is the best way to convert the file?

You need to convert the VOB files in the TS-Folder of the DVD back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/mpegstreamclip.html
which is free, but you must also have the Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
    which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
    which costs $25.
For the benefit of others who may read this thread:
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.

  • What is the easiest way to convert .MTS files for use in Final Cut Express

I initially downloaded my Sony Alpha7 files into iMovie. As the production requires a little more professional software I then tried to import files into Final Cut Express. As these are now .MTS files what is the easiest way of converting them?

    Hey Martin et al,
    Related question...
After you convert files from M2TS or MP4 into something usable in FCE can you trash the original M2ts/mp4 files ?
I recently used Mpeg Streamclip to convert Mp4 into AIC for FCE for example..
Is there a general rule of when you have to save original files so everything works in FCE?
I'm running out of HD space.
    Thanks a lot,

  • Is there a quick way to convert Albums to Projects?

Due to bringing in legacy organizing from iView MediaPro into Aperture years ago... I have an organizational structure consisting of few top level Projects containing many Albums. I now realize I should have few top level Folders containing many Projects (which contain Albums when necessary).
So the question is... is there a quick way to convert an Album to a Project? If I have to create a new Project for each Album I have by hand... this will take forever as I have hundreds of Albums.
    Thanks!

Doing it manually is what I'm trying to avoid... I have a LOT of albums. I started trying to script it but I am trying to piece it together with my uber limited applescript knowledge... here's what I've got:
    tell application "Aperture 3"
    set imgSel to (get selection)
    if imgSel is {} then
    error "Please select an image."
    else
set pName to name of parent of item 1 of imgSel
set pID to id of parent of item 1 of imgSel
set cID to id of parent of parent of item 1 of imgSel
    tell library "Aperture Library"
    make new project with properties {name:pName}
repeat with i from 1 to count of imgSel
move item i of imgSel to project (pName)
    end repeat
    end tell
    end if
    end tell
It's ghetto (there's some stuff I need to comment out that wasn't used) and it seemed to work in the test library I setup, but when I went back there were some weird thumbnail issues so I'm scared... not to mention it doesn't seem to work in the actual library for some reason. It won't create the new project. Weird.

  • I am wondering if there is a way to validate XML file without using .......

I am wondering if there is a way to validate XML file without using the <!DOCTYPE... but pass in the location of the schema/DTD file as a parameter to a validating method?
    thanks

None that I know of. The only thing close is to use the EntityResolver interface where you can modify the location of the DTD file before it's being loaded and parsed, but that requires a <!DOCTYPE ...> in the XML file.
    Good luck.

  • Convert vob files for use in FCP X

I need to convert VOB files for use in FCP X on my macbookpro in OS X Lion (10.7.5) I use Clipwrap to convert other formats, but it does not seem to accept VOB for conversion (or if it does, I have not figured out how). In searching the web, I've come across several products that tout themselves as the best, fastest, easiest VOB to Prores converters etc., some that advertise as "free" when actually only a watermarked trial version is free. I have no idea of the actual quality of any of these (some examples are Brorsoft video converter for Mac, and Acrok HD Video Converter...), and would like some input from folks w/ experience in these things before dropping $ on the problem.
In another thread on this site I read something about MPEG Streamclip, & something about needing to separately download an MPG2 converter for it w/ Lion or Mountain Lion - the process sounded confusing and I couldn't tell if it applied to my situation or not...
Thanks in advance for any light anyone can shed.

MpegStremclip is THE Swiss Army Knife, when it comes to conversion, a 100% reliable, it IS absolutely free (any download a dollar = Stefano would be a millionaire!), I dare to say it is THE most recommended 3d party tool in the editor community ....
How & why you need to install the mp2 plug-in does Signore Cinque explain in simple words on his website:

mp4 is a container, no 'format'.
could contain HDef too (Streamclip should convert to QT/AppleInterediateCodec)
could be imported to iM without conversion
could be handled instantly with usage of perian.org plug-in
could not be handled on MacOs anyhow ...
    .. depends on, what's inside the mp4 ............

  • Converting iTunes files for use in Garageband

    Greetings.
Is it true that that any Protected AAC audio files, found in ones iTunes library (songs), can NOT be converted to WAV or AAIF files, so that one can then be free to import them into a Garageband track???
If so, is there another way to make those Protected AAC files/songs visible in the Garageband music library preview panel, so that one can click 'n drag them into a Garageband track, to then work with...?
Much obliged if any of you bright sparks could help a beginner like me out.
    Best,
    JetHM

Do you still have songs in your iTunes library that have the kind "Protected AAC audio files" and not "Purchased AAC audio files"? Sorry, yes, there is no way to convert these in iTunes
And there is no way to import these files in this Audio format into GarageBand '11.
I signed up for iTunes match, and this way many of the 128 kbps "Protected AAC Audio files" were replaced by higher quality 256 kbps "Purchased AAC Audio", which GarageBand can import. This will work, if the iTunes Store has a Purchased Version of exactly that song recording.
But we are not allowed to post here any methods to crack the digital right protection of iTunes media.

  • Converting .avi files for use in iDVD

I have multiple .avi files that I'd like to add to a DVD using iDVD. These files are in their original format at 30 kb/sec and not compressed at all so they are HUGE...totaling almost 20G.
What is the best way to convert these files so that they can be imported into iDVD and fit on a single DVD. The files would be about an hour and a half playing time so I am hoping that can be done. I realize quality may be compromised but I'm willing to lose a little bit.

Roxio Toast is your best option IMO but if you want to stay within the iApps then you'll first have to add the avi files to iMovie => iDvd. That or use a third part app likeMpegStreamclip (free download):
I suggest you do not exceed 120 mins playback for SL Dvd-R
Hope this helps but if not just come on back.

  • Converting VOB Files For use in FCP

    Hello,
I have a large FCP project using VOB files shot on a DVD Recorder.
I have been been using a freeware called MPEG Streamclip to convert them into Quicktime Files for use with FCP7. The resulting QT files have all been very choppy when used in the FCP Timeline etc.
I have options with this freeware to convert to MPEG, TS or export to Quicktime, DV, AVI, MPEG4 or other formats.
Any suggestions on how to bring these VOB files into Final Cut Pro so that they work well.
    Thanks,
    Marc

Nick's tutorial is good. Read it.
I had been using Cinematize for this but would always have trouble with the aspect ratio.
With MPEG Streamclip I have no problems if I do it this way:
    Export to QuickTime
    Change Compression to: Apple DV/DVCPro-NTSC
    Quality: 100%
    Frame Size: 720x480 (DV-NTSC)
    Sound: Uncompressed (the default)
    Make Movie
I do a preset of the above.
Now, when you take that resultant file into FCP:
In FCP make sure your sequence set-up is DV anamorphic (if footage is anamorphic/16:9). When you bring that file into FCP it will not be flagged as anamorphic. In the browser scroll over and check mark it as anamorphic. NOW drag into the timeline. Aspect ratio is good if you do it this way.

  • Quick way to convert many files from AIFF to MP3

I have a large collection of CDs and until now, did not have a computer or an iPod to hold all of them. I borrowed a friends external hard drive and copied all of the cd files onto it. I just recently bought a MacBook Pro, and loaded all of the files into my iTunes... Only to find that since I couldn't import the cds into an iTunes in the first place, only the file names transferred over- not the album/artist info. So I have been spending a lot of time adding that info manually. I also just realized that all of the files were in AIFF format, and not MP3 so they are taking up a large amount of space on my itunes. I have not yet gotten a better iPod, so they are just sitting in my iTunes right now. I was hoping there is an easy way to convert them all to MP3 without having duplicates in my iTunes to weed through. I have 4000+ songs, so that would take a while.
also, if there is some magical way to get the artist/album info without having to type it all in, that would be great too.
    thanks in advance.

Yes highlight the ones you want to convert and follow the instructions in this support document: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1550
without having duplicates in my iTunes to weed through. I have 4000+ songs, so that would take a while.
There is no weeding necessary. After the converion completes, sort by Date Added and all the new ones will be together.
