Is there a refund policy for dead time capsule?

I have seen that at one time apple was replacing dead time capsules.  Is apple giving any incentive to those that die to purchase future products?  Would I be wasting my time taking it in to the Genius Bar?
I know it's dead.  No light, no fan, nothing.

There was extended warranty for the first 6months worth of production.. and that is now closed as all products from 2008 have now passed 3years.. there is no discussion beyond 3years.. it is not designed to last longer.. that is for sure.
If you have applecare on a computer it covers the TC that is less than 3years.. if so Apple will exchange it.. no file recovery.. too bad for anything lost!!
Sometimes if you sweet talk and buy loads of Apple products.. and the genius is in a good mood and the wind is in the west with waxing moon, they will replace it. Purely out of random pity perhaps. Even a genius must have occasional pangs of conscience.
Overall they will offer you a new one, at somewhat above retail, and take your old one.. to be safely disposed of.. most people do not fall for this. You can tear it open and pull out the hard disk yourself for nothing.. and not give Apple money.. to take your dead TC which they can then refubish and sell or use for people who are still under warranty.
You can also repair it.. or have it repaired. Repairs can be very cheap if you have some mechanical basic soldering skills.

  • If you purchase an app from the app store is there a refund policy

Hey I want to purchase an app but don't know if it will really work but wanted to know if there was refund policy or term on an app.  And if so how do you return it and get a credit?

Per Apple policy, all App store sales are final. Read the descriptions and the reviews carefully before purchase.

  • What is the range for the Time Capsule

    Good day for you all,
Can anyone help me on the following:
    1. What is effective the range for the Time Capsule if there are 2 walls 6" thick each obstacle the way?
    2. Can I backup my data to my Time Capsule anywhere in the world using the Internet?
    3. Can I use the Time Capsule to backup data on my iphone, ipad and ipod?

It is not that simple.. are the walls hollow or solid concrete..?? it is not the thickness of the walls.. but the thickness of material and angle of penetration.. remember wierless is a dead straight line.. Tx to Rx.. so a 30deg angle through concrete is a lot more material than just 6" steel reinforcing is really bad.. at an angle it maybe hard for the wireless to see a gap.
Through standard plasterboard.. rockboard in US I think. walls, with no insulation.. about 15% signal drop on each.. the TC should work ok in standard size house over single floor at least at 2.4ghz .. but the speed will drop as you get further away. Difficult to say more.. that is why apple make the extreme and express and TC can all extend wireless from each other. But all this is only 2.4ghz.
5ghz you will be lucky to get signal through two walls.
    2. Can I backup my data to my Time Capsule anywhere in the world using the Internet?
You can access the TC by using BTMM via iCloud in certain circumstances.. we would not recommend backups over internet.. the possiblity of corrupting the whole backup is too high. Just use a 2.5" portable drive.. ML can backup TM to different targets..
    3. Can I use the Time Capsule to backup data on my iphone, ipad and ipod?
Not directly.. they do not work with TC.. they work with iTunes.. and you automatically backup to itunes locally or cloud.. then Time Machine backs up the iTunes.
You can access the file and store files on the TC if you use a file browser app. But this is not the intended method of operation of any of those devices.

  • How can I erase (or remove) the hard drive from a dead Time Capsule?

How can I erase (or remove) the hard drive from a dead Time Capsule?

I found this having had the same problem...
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=553818
Having removed the hard drive I'm finding I can't reformat it. I manage to mount the HD but Disk Utility crashes when trying to format (HD attached to Mac via Newer Tech. SATA cables to USB) and causes what I think is a kernal panic on my Mac which hard crashes. I see 3 partitions when attempting to mount one of which is AFP. Anyone got any ideas about how to do this? I've dug around but the only progress I've made is to note others have had to work around ACL's when replacing the logic board of the TC. Not sure if this even relates to the problem. However the tool for doing this seems to have been removed from SL. (Forum references to this procedure all relate to 10.5).

  • Data recovery on dead Time Capsule

My Time Capsule died and I have files on it that I don't have else where. The Time Capsule is still under waranty, but if I have someone recover the disk for me the waranty will be broken and then I won't get a new one from Apple. Does anyone know if Apple can perform data recovery on a dead Time Capsule AND give me a new one or repair the broken one?

    How old is the TC?
What model, A1xxx from the bottom if it?
Apple are telling people to store files on the TC so ring them up and say you were using it as you were told and now it is broken, what are they going to do?
They generally refuse to do more than swap to a new one.. the whole point of the TC is backup.. not file store.. so it has no way to backup and is considered a sealed unit.
What is dead btw? On a recent one, a dead hard disk is going to require some work to get files out of, if at all.
My advice would be to very carefully open the TC yourself and see if the TC works without the hard disk in it.. and plug the disk into a computer with usb to sata box.. you can get some recovery software if the disk does work.. otherwise it needs to go to a data centre. Then put it all back into the TC.. seal it up again.. and present it for replacement.. !!

  • Is there a way to use my time capsule as a wireless access point without having it being connected by eithernet thru my DSL

Is there a way to use my time capsule as a wireless acess point without connecting the eithernet cable to my DSL modem

Do you have another router? If not, then the TC must be connected to the modem by Ethernet cable for you to have a network.

  • Does this sound like a dead Time Capsule?

Came home this aft to no WIFI.  Checked and the light was off on my Time Capsule (first generation) but otherwise intenret connectios seemed OK.
Powered the TC off/on; green light came on momentarily, changed to orange for about 30 seconds, then went off again.  Repeated the cycle several times with no difference.
I have noticed recently that the hard-drive in my TC was getting noisy but everything appeared to be working until a few hours ago.
I recall there were issues with the early Time Capsules and sudden death.  Does this sound like that situation?
Welcome advice on whether current generation Time Capsules are more reliable or would a better course be to replace it with a generic router and seprate backup disk?
    Thanks ..donald

Apple treated me well on this.  My TC was 15 months out of warranty when I took it to the Genius Bar.  About the only question asked was "do you have Apple Care on another product?", following which a replacement TC was produced, some paperwork signed and I was on my way.
    Only a couple of reservations:
The replacement TC, according to the Genius, is new "service stock" (not a refurnished unit) but the same model as my original TC; i.e. First Generation.  This leaves me guessing it will have about a 2-yaer lifespan as well, so I I should plan on upgrading well in advance.  I'll be listening carefully for strange noises and watching how hot it gets.
The second reservation is about security of the information on the TC; al the Time Machine backups plus a little bot of other stuff.  The old TC was boxed for return to Apple and I have to trust Apple that it will be securly destroyed.  Trust is a big thing.

  • Optimal Setup for New Time Capsule with Wireless AC

I'm curious to see what the hypotehtical optimal setup for my Time Capsule.  I understand that wireless speeds depend on a ton of factors and that part of getting the best connection is just trying different options.  I have a new Time Capsule that's connected to the following devices: iPhone 5S; new MacBook Air with wireless AC; old iMac from 2007; old AirPort Express that only supports b/g and a newish Apple TV that supports wireless N, I believe.  I was connecting to the network (which was not designated with the 5ghz) and I recently chose the option to label the 5ghz.  I'm using that now to stream music with the new iPhone and the Apple TV with no problems, but I have no longer have the option of using the old Airport express because it's an old one.  I'm thinking of just getting a new Airport Express and leaving it at that, but wanted to know if anyone has some thoughts on this.  I'm sure there's a more concise and direct way to ask this question, but my knowledge is pretty limited here.  Thanks in advance.

The Time Capsule is already set up for optimal performance when you open up the box.
You can assign a separate name to the 5 GHz network and point devices that are capable to that network. This works well if the device is located close to the Time Capsule.
But, 5 GHz signals are much weaker than 2.4 GHz signals, so once you move a room or two away, or the signal has to pass through several walls, the 2.4 GHz will be stronger.....and probably faster as well.
But...your device will try to stay locked on the 5 GHz network since you set it up that way.
This type of setup may or may not work best for you.  For most users, it is simpler and more effective to use the default settings on the Time Capsule to have both bands use the same network name.
Then, your wireless devices will automatically connect to the signal with the best quality. Best quality may not be the fastest signal since there are lot of factors involved with signal quality. But, if you think about it a bit more, don't you want to have your wireless device connect to the signal with the best quality?
Some users swear by assigning a separate name to the 5 GHz band. I'm not one of them, but If it works well for them and they are happy, then there is no reason to change.
An older AirPort on your network is going to drag down the speeds. You need the new AirPort Express, or better yet an AirPort Extreme if you want to be able to extend the new 802.11ac signal.

  • My ethernet cable seems to be too small for my Time Capsule?

Recently, I attempted to hook up my new Time capsule to my new iMac. The ethernet cable I used to connect to the ethernet wall socket I used with my previous router appeared to be too small to fit into the Time Capsule's ethernet plug. When I inserted it, no green light came on to tell me it was connected, and the Time Capsule continued to flash amber. I'm fairly sure the ethernet cord comes out from (what was meant to be) a phone jack. Could this be the reason for the small plug?
Is the solution to this as simple as just buying a proper plug to fit, or do I have to do something else?
The small plug itself looks like this: http://www.instructables.com/files/deriv/FHX/BNCU/FXA2ZSBL/FHXBNCUFXA2ZSBL.LARGE .jpg
    Any help is much appreciated.

Your "Ethernet" cable is a phone cable. It cannot be plugged directly into the Time Capsule, since the Time Capsule is a router only. It does not have a modem on board.
Your previous router was a "modem/router" which combined the functions of a separate modem and router in one package.
The phone cable must plug into a modem and then the modem will have a larger Ethernet port to connect a cable from the modem to the WAN "O" port on the Time Capsule.
If you still have your old modem/router there, you can use it as a modem for the Time Capsule.

  • Will there be a new update to Time Capsule soon?

I've got the latest firmware rev for my Time Capsule, 7.3.2, and I noticed there haven't been any updates since July 2008.
I would like to see a 'Shutdown' option added. I know there is a 'Restart' option.

As you know from reading the "Help & Terms of Use" for this area, this is a user to user discussion area and not a direct line to Apple. There is no guarantee that anyone from Apple will ever see any of these threads. Also you will remember that speculation on future Apple products or services is forbidden.
If you want to suggest a new feature, go to www.apple.com/feedback/timecapsule.html

Thank you William for your most helpful response. I shall deal first with your three comments:
Not being tech savvy, I would not have been able to make that call myself but it sure makes sense.
I have updated my profiles as you suggest.  Excellent tip.
This guidance is good.  Being new to Apple Support Communities, I did not find the field a labeling and guidance to be clear, a point you make.  Now I know, I shall do as you say and will use the small slim box as a header to the full message/question, which will place in the larger box below.
Secondly, I come to your question: Did anything change on your Mac recently, such as replacing the disk or main logic board?
The answer is “yes”.  Two events have happened both of which concerned the Time Capsule:
The telephone company, with which I have access to the Internet and I have my email account, installed a new modum.  After the technician left I had to try and get the Time Capsule and WiFi working again which ended with my having to call Apple for technical assistance.  The Apple technician walked me through a number of procedural steps which effectively re-set up the Time Capsule.
Access to the Internet failed and the telephone company reset the modum.  I had to call Apple again.  This time the technician did not reset the Time Capsule but walked me through a number of steps tha included renaming the “site”  (not the Time Capsule).
Another piece of information that may be relevant is that the MacBook Pro uses the Time Capsule for backup.  Everything appears to be in order.  When I enter the Time Capsule for this laptop I have backups going back for a long time.
Also, I do a weekly backup of the two computers onto another external hard drive using the Time Machine software.  So I have another backup of both computers.

Is there a way to use the time capsule as an external hard drive only and disable the wi-fi function ?

    Yes.
    1) Connect an Ethernet cable from one of the LAN <--> ports on your existing wireless router to the WAN "O" port on the Time Capsule
    2) Go through the standard configuration suggested by the setup "wizard"
    3) Then manually turn off the wireless function using AirPort Utility
