Is there a "Safari Alert" phishing scam that asks you to call tech support at 844-877-7978

Yes, it's a scam. Do not call any phone number.
Helpful Links Regarding Malware Problems
If you are having an immediate problem with ads popping up see The Safe Mac » Adware Removal Guide, remove adware that displays pop-up ads and graphics on your Mac, and AdwareMedic. If you require anti-virus protection Thomas Reed recommends using ClamXAV. (Thank you to Thomas Reed for this recommendation.) You might consider adding this Safari extensions: Adblock Plus 1.8.9.
Open Safari, select Preferences from the Safari menu. Click on Extensions icon in the toolbar. Disable all Extensions. If this stops your problem, then re-enable them one by one until the problem returns. Now remove that extension as it is causing the problem.
The following comes from user stevejobsfan0123. I have made minor changes to adapt to this presentation.
Fix Some Browser Pop-ups That Take Over Safari.
Common pop-ups include a message saying the government has seized your computer and you must pay to have it released (often called "Moneypak"), or a phony message saying that your computer has been infected, and you need to call a tech support number (sometimes claiming to be Apple) to get it resolved. First, understand that these pop-ups are not caused by a virus and your computer has not been affected. This "hijack" is limited to your web browser. Also understand that these messages are scams, so do not pay any money, call the listed number, or provide any personal information. This article will outline the solution to dismiss the pop-up.
Quit Safari
Usually, these pop-ups will not go away by either clicking "OK" or "Cancel." Furthermore, several menus in the menu bar may become disabled and show in gray, including the option to quit Safari. You will likely have to force quit Safari. To do this, press Command + option + esc, select Safari, and press Force Quit.
Relaunch Safari
If you relaunch Safari, the page will reopen. To prevent this from happening, hold down the 'Shift' key while opening Safari. This will prevent windows from the last time Safari was running from reopening.
This will not work in all cases. The shift key must be held at the right time, and in some cases, even if done correctly, the window reappears. In these circumstances, after force quitting Safari, turn off Wi-Fi or disconnect Ethernet, depending on how you connect to the Internet. Then relaunch Safari normally. It will try to reload the malicious webpage, but without a connection, it won't be able to. Navigate away from that page by entering a different URL, i.e. www.apple.com, and trying to load it. Now you can reconnect to the Internet, and the page you entered will appear rather than the malicious one.

No. Contact the carrier and see if they offer such a service.

  • Is there an app for the iPhone that allows you to syncronize alarm clocks or even set an alarm for you friend?

Is there an app for the iPhone that allows you to syncronize alarm clocks or even set an alarm for you friend?
Would appreciate if someone could help me with this. It doesn't have to be a free app.
    Thanks!

Since there is no "drafts" folder on an iPhone for SMS's, not sure how something like that would work anyway. You can always copy to the notes app, then paste back yourself.

  • Hi i have just bought a used ibook from goodwill and need to reset the id and password.is there anyway to do this? i called tech support and they said to try here because our ibook is considered opsolete and they can't help me. thanks

hi before i start i did not steal it, i bought a used ibook and need to know if there is a way to reset or get past the old user id and pass word. we bought it from goodwil so no way to ask old owner and i called tech support and it is conciderd opsolete so no help from them and know one in this area works on mac. so what can i do?  this is for my daughter and we are not rich thats why we bought used. thanks for any help.

Here are the instructions, as I have them:
Press the Command + s key during startup. This takes you to Single User Mode, where you will see a command line.
Type this when the command-line prompt (>) appears:
    mount -uw /
    rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone
    shutdown -h now
When the iBook restarts, you will see the setup screen. This allows you to create a new account. BE SURE to give yourself administrative privileges. You can now use this new account and set it to log in automatically with this new account if you don't want to be bothered with the login screen every time you start up.
You can also delete the old account if you want to free up some hard drive space.
    Good luck!

However, it is desirable to do it with the disc, if it is available, which is why I waited to see if the user has the disc before supplying the instructions for doing it via Single User Mode.

  • Is there an iPad app for photos that allows you to see them organized by labeling as 1, 2, 3 etc or a, b, c etc in the order you wish instead of by date taken? Thanks.

Is there an iPad app suitable for iPad mini that allows you to order your photos by 1,2,3, etc or a, b, b, in the title rather than ordering by date taken? This would keep them in a sequence you want instead of displaying randomly. Thanks.

1, you can't at the moment, though with iOS 5 in the Autumn, from http://www.apple.com/ios/ios5/features.html#photos :
Even organize your photos in albums — right on your device
2, by removing it from you synced from and re-syncing. Only photos taken with the iPad, copied to it via the camera connection kit, or saved from emails/websites etc can be deleted directly on the iPad (either via the trashcan icon in the top right corner if viewing the photo in full screen, or via the icon of the box with the arrow coming out of it in thumbnail view)
3, the location of the photos that you synced to the iPad should be listed on the iPad's Photos tab when connected to your computer's iTunes.
4, you can copy the photos from your iPad to your computer : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083 . You should also be able to delete them from the iPad as part of the transfer process to your computer, and it's then your choice whether to add them to your sync photo list so as to copy them back to the iPad. Copying them to your computer would allow you to organise them into folders and therefore be able to sync them back into separate albums.
5, I don't use Dropbox either. There are some third-party browser apps in the iTunes App Store that allow you to download pages so that you can view them when offline e.g. Atomic Web (the whole page is saved within Atomic Web, it doesn't place a photo into the Photos app)
6, deleting content should help. If you remove an app from your iPad then you also remove the content that it's got on the iPad - so if you then decide to reinstall it back onto the iPad then you will need to manually add back any content that you want in it. None of the Apple built-in apps (including Photos) can be removed from the iPad

  • For those of you with a Windows computer and the iOS device is not syncing or showing up in iTunes. here is a known solution that has been working for tech support!

I know this seems to be an emerging issue ever since the update to iTunes 11.1.4, some iPhones or other iOS devices are not showing up in iTunes or syncing. I'm not sure if Apple really knowns of this issue, but tech support has a (mostly) sure fire way of resolcing this issue. It's only for Windows computers though.
Go to the article http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1538 and follow the Section 5 Verify Apple Mobile Device USB driver is installed. When you clik on that section, go to your version of Windows (it seems to be happening mostly across Windows 8) . And then to the section: If Apple iPod, Aple iPhone, or Apple iPad is listed.
The gist of what you need to do:
Windows 8 (since it seems to be the most affected) move your cursor to the upper ight corner of your screen) and click on the Magnifying glass. Type in devmgmt.msc and this should bring up the Device Manager. Onc eyou are in the device manager, look for the "Portable device" or "Universial Serial bus Controller" list, and you should see the "Apple iPhone/iPad/iPod" listed. Onc eyou see it, right click it, choose "Update software driver." Now, IT WILL SAY THE DRIVER IS UPDATED. I CANNOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH. Select "Browse my computer for driver software." Onc eyou choose that, select "Let me pick from a lsit of drivers on my computer." You should see the option "Have Disk." Choose that. Again, I KNOW you do not have a physical disk, but the file we need is already on your computer. After Hard Disk, choose Browse again. Follow this file path to the file we need: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers.. In the Driver's folder, you should see the "usbaaple" or "usbappl64" (if you have the 64 bit for Windows). Double click on that file, and hit OK. The file should install, and once it's finished check your iTunes!!! You may want to unplug your device and plug it back it before doing all of this. I REALLY hope this works for you all as well!

How can I change my file extension from m4p to something else? I have had no success being able to play or burn my purchased music. I keep getting error 2122. If I can change the format I should be able to move it to another player or at least burn it in Nero. Thanks.

  • Is there a way to make a rescue email address without calling apple support?

I see lots of questions about rescue emails etc. I am having problems with security questions as well I don't remember ever making those security questions either. So I am wondering of there is a way of making a rescue email address without calling the apple support team in which I do not wish to go through a whole bunch of people taking hrs to actually get it done , my dad has had experience with this before and isn't happy with calling them either because he has to recall so many times and go through the process over and over again so. Is there a way with out calling them?

This only leads me to calling apple support to change things ,in which I wish to not do so, I have money on my account in which I can't use because of these security questions in which I did not put up and when I made this account on iCloud it did not give me the chance to make a rescue email. Thus leading me to where I am now.

  • Safari-Alert ?scam?

I was browsing Safari on my IMac today when I suddenly got a dialogue box supposedly from Apple Security called Safaro-Alert. It claims suspicious activity detected. Your browser might have been hijacked and then it gives a number to call 1-866-782-9808 (Not Apple)
Since then I cannot quit Safari on the IMac and when I force quit it returns as soon as I open it.
Anyone else had this experience. Bob (Using my wife's MacBook)

    1. Some of those scam pages can be dismissed very easily. Press command-W to close the tab or window. A huge box will pop up. Press the return key and both the box and the page will close. If that doesn't happen, continue.
    2. From the Safari menu bar, select
              Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Security
and uncheck the box marked Enable JavaScript. Leave the preferences dialog open.
Close the malicious window or tab.
Re-enable JavaScript and close the preferences dialog.
    3. If the Preferences menu item is grayed out, quit Safari. Force quit if necessary. Relaunch it by holding down the shift key and clicking its icon in the Dock. From the menu bar, select
Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Privacy ▹ Remove All Website Data
to get rid of any cookies or other data left by the server. Open your Downloads folder and delete anything you don't recognize.

  • Why does Adobe make it so very difficult to report a possible phishing scam that uses its name/logo?

--and possibly even hijacks information from its Web site?  I'm a veteran user of computers/digital products/software programs/email clients, and I'm very concerned that, as careful as I am, I may have been "phished" early this morning in connection with my legitimate online purchase of the ExportPDF program for my home computer.  Had a cordial exchange with one of Adobe's customer reps, who directed me to the piracy site, even though this is not really a piracy issue.  Other forms requre types of technical information that simply don't apply to this type of interaction.  Does anybody at the company care that their products and resources may be being misused for fraudulent ends?

Please notify Adobe of any security issues here:

  • Is there an ical/iphone app that allows you to call a phone number from ica

I schedule hourly appointments with clients and type the name and phone number for each client directly on the schedule. Does anybody know of an app that would allow me to simply tap on that phone number from ical to call the client? Otherwise, i have to look at ical on my phone, remember the number, click to phone and enter it in manually. Thanks!

There no app for that, no. But, if you enter the number into the Notes field of the appointment (but not the name or location fields), you can tap the number to dial it from the Calendar app.

something that is free or is under 5.00 dollars

Are you talking about packets to be sent by mail and you need to weigh them, or internet packets and their sizes/quantities?  I can't see how an iOS device can possibly weigh something, but try doing a search in the itunes app store.

  • Phishing scams

Short story: I have no idea where I should go to report phishing scams specifically involving Verizon.
An hour ago I got a call (I have AT&T wireless service, not Verizon) telling me about "free $36 if you just enter your account information at this website", the website being verizon36.com
Thankfully, I know how phishing scams work, have the Web of Trust addon, and the NoScript addon, so I was pretty safe, but the call was from (800) 922-0204 - a number associated with Verizon - so the number was spoofed.
So, why would I want to bring this to Verizon's attention? I would assume they would have motivation to deal with the maliciously used possession of the domain "verizon36.com". (It was just registered yesterday, by the way, by someone in Santo Domingo. The whois: http://whois.domaintools.com/verizon36.com) If someone were to take the domain veriz0n.com, verizzon.com, verizonvireless.com, and start running phishing scams using the impersonating domain, I would assume they would be interested to know as well.
Essentially, I scoured the site for some place to report phishing scams targeting Verizon customers, and came up empty.

    chickdoc wrote:
Verizon posts under Support / Announcements a number of notices about phishing scams that appear to be emails from Verizon.  Why can't the email servers detect these bogus emails and either block them at the server from making it to the user's accounts, or appending "POTENTIAL SCAM" to the email subject header.
I am sure that the actual original example shown are blocked, but the spammers keep find ways of disguising them so new version keep coming through.  Usually includes some pointers to servers they keep changing.
