Is there a shortcut to 'don't save' in microsoft word?

This applies to text edit and microsoft word. Whenever the window pops up about saving I just want to know if there is a shortcut command to say don't save. I know this is lazy because I don't want to use my trackpad but I just want to see if there's a shortcut.

Yes there is a shortcut.
On pre-Lion Macs Command-D worked for everything.
From Lion and newer Command-Delete works with Apple programs such as TextEdit and Command-D works with other programs such as MS Word.
On some keyboards the Delete key may be labelled Backspace.

  • I just accidentally 'Don't Save'd a Word document. CAn I get it back?

I just inadvertently "Don't Save"ed a Word document. It had not been Save-ed or Named at any point. CAn I get it back?

You are correct. Time Machine can't backup a file that is not saved. And in "bopdog"s question above, I agree that her chances of getting her Word file back are slim to none. Bopdog specified that s/he never saved the Word file at all. In my experience and testing, I have never seen a Microsoft Office program create an Auto-Recover file of an open, but unsaved file, except when a program crash has occurred. I have seen Excel create an Auto-Recover file of an open document that had never been saved, when Excel crashed. So your point is well taken, and is likely correct in bopdog's case.
However, Microsoft Office for Mac 2011 programs, do save files automatically. If you have not changed the preferences, Office will automatically save an open, previously-saved, file every 10 minutes to the file location of Microsoft Office Auto-Recover documents (by default: Users > usernamehomefolder > Library > Application Support > Microsoft > Office > Office 2011 AutoRecovery). And if you use Time Machine, it will back up the Auto-Recover files every hour.
There are numerous support and forum Q&As across the internet where posters have basically said "if you click 'Don't Save' you are doomed." And there are numerous Q&As that explain where to find MS Office Auto-Recover files, and others that suggest Time Machine as a way to recover files. My post was meant to point out the fact that the combination of Auto-Recover and Time Machine can often allow you to recover a file (with at least some of your otherwise lost work) when you accidentally click "Don't Save."
The reason for my enthusiasm in the post is that I had just recovered several hours of work using the method I described. Here's what happened in my specific case:
I was working on a Word document that had been saved previously.
I spent several hours over the course of a workday bouncing between the open Word document and multitasking with other programs and files.
In the evening I went back to work on the file for a while, then I got distracted.
I went to install some new software and when my Mac asked me to Restart, I blithely shut down all my programs.
When Word asked, I accidentally clicked "Don't Save" on the file that I had been working on off-and-on all day, without saving.
I shut down Word normally and restarted the computer.
I then re-opened the Word file (opened recent documents) and realized that hours and hours of work were gone!
I went to Auto-Recover and there was no Auto-Recover file for the Word document. That is the way Auto-Recover unfortunately works. If you say "Don't Save" it assumes you mean it, and it deletes the Auto-Recover file. You can't get it back.
However, Time Machine backed up the Auto-Recover file. It was still there in my last Time Machine backup. In my case I didn't lose one minute of my work, because the Word file had been sitting there open for hours, without me working on it, and Time Machine backed up the Auto-Recover file every hour.
So yes, you can recover a Word file that YOU did not (recently) save, even if you clicked "Don't Save," because Auto-Recover saves files automatically, and Time Machine backs up the Auto-Recover files. It may not work in every case, but it sure saved my butt a couple days ago. So forgive my enthusiasm, but I was pretty stoked to get a few hours of my life back, and wanted to share this with the Mac community.

  • Improved "save as" Microsoft Word in Acrobat 8 or 9 versus 7

Anyone out there know if either Acrobat 8 or 9 has improved "save as" Microsoft Word performance versus that performance for Acrobat 7? What I seek improvement in is the fidelity of format conversion. Saving a PDF document as Word in Acrobat 7 loses much of the formatting.
    Thanks.
    Richard

    >Saving a PDF document as Word in Acrobat 7 loses much of the formatting.
I don't have 9 yet but I can't imagine it would be a whole heckuva lot better.
It all really depends on the PDF and how it was created to begin with.
For instance, if it was previously an InDesign document, it will never translate in to a Word document. There are too many things you can do in ID that Word wouldn't recognize.
If it was already a Word document and was tagged properly, it would probably convert just fine (or pretty close.)

  • Keyboard Shortcut for 'Don't Save'?

I prefer keyboard shortcuts to the mouse for many things and when I close an unneeded file (in TextEdit for example) I used to type cmd-d for don't save.  That is no long an option and it also seems impossible to create a short cut in software like Keyboard Maestro because the dialog location depends on the window size. Any ideas on how to make cmd-d work again?

  • Save as Microsoft Word doc not using initial OCR process

I used Acrobat X's OCR feature wich seems to work quite well... It does all the normal stuff like giving you the option to fix up and suspect conversion issues. After correcting any suspects I then went to save the file as a document that I could then forward to sombody to edit... Say Microsoft Word.
When I went File->Save->Microsft Word->Word Document and selected the location, I could see in the little status bar down the bottom that Acrobat X went through what looked like another OCR process. And sure enough when I opened up the file the Word document contained all the un-fixed suspects in it.
Can anybody else confirm this behaviour, tell me if I am missing something or tell me a possible work around?

Please note that this is a known limitation with the current version of Acrobat (Acrobat X). We might fix this issue in our future releases.

  • How do I save tabs to a folder is there a shortcut?

    Hi,
Suppose you have 4 web pages open, each in a separate tab in Safari.
You have all these tabs open and you would like to put all of them in a folder.
Is there a shortcut or technique - besides dragging each url individually into the bookmark manager?
It would be wonderful if there was a "Save Open Tabs..", which would display a dialog that allows you to create a new folder, or pick a folder where you would like these placed. Of course, it would be nice if it rememebered where you last saved your 'tabbed webpages' too, so you didnt' have to keep on looking for the same old folder?
Apologies in advance, if this is in the help, i took a look through the help and did not see a way to do this.
thanks for your help in advance,
    sincerely,
    J__

Saft provides that feature, which almost necessarily means that Safari doesn't, I'm afraid.

  • Is there a way to make Illustrator save in the background, like Photoshop?

Out of Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator, Illustrator is definitely the one I have most problems working with, due to small UI differences and ways of handling things
Like the fact that you can't drag next to a number to change it, like in Photoshop. Or the fact that I can't sync my settings (it only says "Signed in as:", and when I press Manage Account, I'm taken to my CC files in Safari).
But most annoying is the fact that whenever I'll save a document in Illustrator, a dialogue box opens letting me know the progress of the saving. Not only does this make me unable to continue working on the document (if the file is large, it takes some time), the app icon starts jumping in the dock if I switch to another program before the box appears.
So, is there any way to make it save in the background, like in Photoshop? I'm running OS X, with Illustrator version 17.1.0.

This really frustrates me, small differences between the apps that shouldn't be there.
I understand you can't change the keyboard shortcuts to be the same/similar, but this is totally different. Let's hope it changes soon.

  • Deleting & renaming files - is there a shortcut to finder?

I am a recent convert from PC to Mac. So far so good. However, one thing starts to drive me up the wall which is deleting/renaming files in programs such as photoshop, word, excel etc.etc.
As far as I can tell, this is only possible in the finder menu. Is this Correct? I am using a lot of folders and subfolders - sometimes 3-4 levels deep. Every time I need to change/delete a file or filename - lets say while in photoshop, I have to go to finder and click my way through several levels of folders to the actual file I need to change. This is somewhat annoying and timeconsuming.
Question 1: is there a way to do these operations in - lets say photoshop directly?
Question 2: If not, is there a shortcut key that would point me automatically to the file in finder where I can make the changes?
Your input would be very helpful and save me some aggravation.

    Hi Greg,
Thanks for your input. You are correct as far as "save" and "save as" is concerned. Windows and Mac work the same way.
However, as far as I can tell, in Mac you can only "delete" or "rename" a file in "finder" which forces you to open up finder and locate the file in order to delete or change it.
In windows you can do these 2 functions directly in the program (such as photoshop, excel or words). You do not have to go to "explorer or root directory" to make these changes which I believe would be the equivalent of "finder".
In any case, Terence solved the problem. By command clicking the name (title) of the file in any program, it opens up the directory in "finder". This way makes it easy to select the file and do the changes.

In Illustrator, I have a saved artwork, then I'm saving a copy as PDF, as usual.
After I keep the AI file open, making some modifications which I don't want to save, so I close the file and click "Don't Save".
Even though I clicked that, the file's modification time is changing.
(The modifications I made are not there, so it's not really saving but why the date is changing then?)
Please find the cause of it! Thank you!

All I can suggest is that you open that file on the MBA and save it as a new file, then see if you can open the new one on the iMac.

  • Saved "printing shortcuts" settings don't appear to be saved??

I'm a bit frustrated with the "Printing Shortcuts" option to save your own settings after noticing that when I've saved settings, they don't always seem to be saved. I've gone through the tabs (esp . the color settings) and set things the way I want, then gone back to the 'printing shortcuts' tab and clicked 'save as' at the bottom and entered a name. The name appears in the list and looks like it was saved. But when I go back and click that shortcut, my settings do not reappear when I look through the tabs.
I've saved two Shortcut settings of my own, set paper sizes, the right paper, and advanced color settings. I've done it by right clicking the printer in Windows and going into "printer preferences", etc...and I've also tried it by clicking "print" in Photoshop, choosing the printer in the pop-up window, clicking 'preferences', and reaching the HP "shortcuts" menu. Both ways obviously get you to the HP "Printing Shortcuts" utility, and either way I can see the two shortcuts I saved. But again, if I click either of them none of the selections for paper, paper size, or color settings appear. Clicking on some of the built-in shortcuts makes the paper/paper-size settings switch accordingly---so why don't the ones I save myself?
    Is that normal?
(For what it's worth...I'm still aggravated that HP has -no-..meaning -zero-..printer profiles readily available for this printer in Windows. I've fought with trying to create one that works and may finally just buy an IT8 target. But I finally just gave up and decided to roll my own color settings in the above 'shortcuts'. Just today, a week after I bought this, I can generate nice acceptable skin tones in my prints that look like what's on the screen in Photoshop. For what it's worth I do love the prints, and this printer is great after all this. So, now, I wish the shortcuts would stay the way I make them.)
    Help me Obi-wan-kenobi...anyone?
    Thanks,
    Chris

Having exactly the same issue. Using UPD 5.3 PCL6 driver. I can apply changes to the default/eco short cuts and they are retained until you select another shortcut and return to the original. At that point it reverts to the default default. Close and reopen and my mods appear again.
With the additional shortcuts though, I can create whatever I want, save as and apply, close the window & reopen and no new shortcuts.
    Come on HP!
    Cheers,

  • Are there any shortcuts for creating Value Object Classes?

    Hi,
I'm using a Remote Object to connect to my server
(pyAMF/Django). I'm getting stuck with the creation of Value Object
Classes. It doesn't seem very DRY to have a class on my server
representing the data model and then have to recreate that class
and all its properties in my Flex app.
Are there any shortcuts for creating client side VOs from
    server side data?
I was thinking about declaring an empty VO class in Flex, and
then dynamically assigning/casting my Proxy object to that class.
It seems like that approach may cause problems for the Flex
    compiler though.
    Any hints?
    Thanks!

You simply install a (very lightweight) Eclipse plugin, add a

  • My screen is crack, are there keyboard shortcuts to use S-Video

    Good afternoon all,
I am a novice with Macs. Unfortunately, due to my own carelessness, my display is destroyed. I don't have the ability to see more than the top left corner of the screen.
I have the S-Video - VGA adapter cord. However, I don't have the ability to change the settings on my computer b/c I can't see the screen. Is there a shortcut or keyboard process that could guide me through changing those settings?
    Thanks,

Hi, proto, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
You will need the use of a second computer monitor, at least temporarily, and a USB keyboard and mouse. The following procedure may work using a TV set connected via S-Video, but I'm not certain of that, so I suggest using a real monitor instead, at least to verify the that Powerbook is still capable of operating in display-closed mode when wired to a conventional monitor.
Follow the instructions in this article to operate the computer in display-closed mode.
If it works, give the same procedure a try using your TV set and connecting it via S-Video. If that isn't successful, I suspect it's because of the S-Video connection, and you'll probably have to use a regular computer monitor instead.

  • Timeline location indicator missing, is there a shortcut to turn it on?

Day two of editing Motion 5. Like it however, I am missing the timeline - line that tells you where you are in the project. It is in the project window, I can see the green bar moving. I don't have it in the timeline nor the keyframe editor. So there a shortcut button I am missing. I can't seem to find it and it is driving me nuts. Thanks for your help.
