Is there a silent/quiet K8N Neo 2 Plat chipset fan?

Got a Neo 2 Platinum with a Zalman in an Antec Sonata. The noisiest thing in the box is the little MSI chipset fan. It spins at about 5000 RPM and is pretty noisy. With Speedfan I can reduce its speed to 80% and the computer is basically silent.
I want to replace this chipset fan with a silent one with good cooling performance, does anyone have any recommendations? (I normally run Linux so Speedfan isn't an option).
Thanks.

I dont know if permanently lowering the NB fan speed is such a good idea as it seems to run pretty warm even when the fan is running at 100%. Does anyone have any experience replacing the MSI NB fan on the Neo 2 Platinum? Does the passive Zalman work OK? I've seen reviews for the swifttech and microcool but they don't say much about the noise - any experiences people have had would be most appreciated.
Thanks.
It probably runs pretty warm even at 100% because almost all boards have incorrectly applied thermal paste (at the factory). There have been pictures on the board here previously..

    Hi,
The little fan (msi logo on it) has stopped working.  Does anybody know the part number or where to get another?  I have tried to call MSI many times, but I always have to leave a message.  Please help    Thanks

replace your fan with a fanless heatsink (for example the zalman)
About them... I have ZM-NB47J (that blue thing) but I still have not decided to mount it. There are many reports about them working on NF4 but in fact full of mixed opinions. Some running hot but without problems but there are some horror stories also.
    Well... Here:
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=83749.msg596154#msg596154
I found nice Arioch`s guide showing that it is not so easy to remove old heatsink from NF4 NB. Damn... I found reports that there is only a minor pushpins problem but reports were about Asus NF4 motherboards. It looks like MSI is using something stronger between NB and heatsink plate.   Well I have no Platinum but SLI-FI and it is not necessary to cut NB47 mounting it on this board but what is under original MSI cooler remains a mystery. I am tempted but not willing to spent whole day cleaning NB core.

Only BIOS 1.4 and above support Venice & San Diego. However BIOS 1.4 has shut-down issue with RAID. It is suggested that you let your reseller help you flash BIOS to the latest version 1.5. After flashing BIOS, Loading Optimized defaults is needed of course. Good Luck!
Support new features in that cpuid yes. But that is not the same as you are not able to boot/post your system
    with an earlier bios .
I booted up a venice on a K8N Neo2 with an aged 1.3 bios (with no venice SD support) just fine .
If the bios supports 90nm cpu it will post .
    New CPUID added means :
    Shown on post (display)
    And e.g new model spesific features (like e.g SSE3 ) enabled .
Use the CPUID instruction to properly identify the processor.
    • Determine the processor type, stepping, and available features by using functions 0000_0001h
and 8000_0001h of the CPUID instruction.
    • Boot-up display - The processor name should be displayed according to the processor name string
defined in CPUID Guide for the AMD Athlon™ 64 and AMD Opteron™ Processors, order#
    25481.

  • MSI K8N neo 2 Plat System still to be Built from Scratch!!!

    Hi to all,
My first post and it's gonna be lengthy I think!
I am not a gamer ever, most of what I do is Video encoding (mainly this 100% CPU hogging activity) and Graphics manipulation.
Below is a list of what I have to start my build:
Note that I do not overclock ever so please, no reference to this!!!
    MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum (7025)
    Athlon 64 3500+ 92nm Winchester Core (retail)
Cooler = Zalman CNPS7000B-CU Ultra-Quiet CPU Cooler (think I might have fitting probs with memory slots DIMM's 1+2(G/P) on the MSI Neo2 Plat board, DIMM's 3+4(G/P) might be my only option if I want to stick with this cooler but for fault finding purposes I can always use the stock cooler?)
    Corsair TwinXL PC3200 - CMX512-3200XLPRO 400Mhz 2.2.2.5 LL
Antec True Power 550W with SATA supply (X2)
1 X Western Digital 74Gb SATA Raptor HDD (I want this as my C: main boot, no Raid)
2 X Seagate Barracuda 300Gb 7K2rpm SATA HDD (I want these as RAID 0/stripe=performance only)
    GPU: On order!
    http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/vga/vga/pro_vga_detail.php?UID=636
Will use my old trustworthy and reliable GeForce 2 Ti 64 Mb card for XP+SP1 instalation only.
1 X 120 Gb 7K2 HDD (IDE 1 Master) (from old set up)
1 X 120 Gb 7k2 HDD (IDE 1 Salve) (from old set up)
    1 x  PlexWriter 52x/24x/52x CD-ReWriter (IDE 2 Master)
    1 X Pioneer DVR-108 Black16x DVD±RW Dual layer (IDE 2 Slave)
PCI = Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2 Value 7.1 PCI Sound Card - OEM
    Case = Lian-Li PC V1100 Black Aluminium Midi-Tower
Everthing is new in this set-up apart from my old IDE HDD's, still in boxes and ready to go ready for your input?
    Q1. Quote
Keep in mind that you will need the special drivers to install your SATA Raid drives if you have any. When the windows install starts you need to keep tapping the F6 key to load those drivers from the diskette MSI supplied. "If you are using an Nvidia3 chipset with a single SATA drive and not raiding, you can skip this step, it will automatically be recognized by windows." (Tip Provided by timkessler)
Straight forward if you are using one or the other methods mentioned in Tiresmokes thread Basic Building Tips(which is gr8, thnx for that Tiresmoke). But as above I want my W/D raptor as my C: main boot drive only, no RAID?
Can I use the F6 option at the XP instal and then go on to set up the Raptor drive accordingly - and from there set up my 300Gb Seagates as RAID 0 (Seagates wont be attached till Raptor is set to C: main boot)???
Once I get to this stage I will start asking about board BIOS and Driver details which I dont know as of yet, like I said everything is still boxed.
I thought personally that starting this thread - people wanting to use this board would benefit from a brand new instalation from scratch guide from a relatively newbie point of view?
I know there are alot of issues regarding the boards features, but I thought if I done this in public the relevant problems could be linked as I go along, either with problems or without - depending on the individual experience?
pheeeewww, I said it was gonna be lengthy didnt I?

    Having then got widows installed.
    Seperate project to
enable raid in bios, creating the raid & let windows install drivers later.
assuming you have an original windows cd ie pre sp1, the quickest method of installation is to slipstream windows.
Basically you download latest service pack sp1 or sp2 insert your OS cd & run a program which merges the 2 & creates a new OS cd with the SP integrated. Any updates needed then are miimal.

Looks like they moved the AutoStreamer thread, and updated to 1.033---> AutoStreamer 1.0.33

  • K8N Neo 4 Plat/SLI Hanging

Hey all, been a couple of months since I threw together my system, and everything has been working extremely well. This morning I rebooted my computer, and upon reboot the system hung and gave me no post. I checked my D-bracket and noticed that it was stuck on the "Detecting on board memory state." I've tried different RAM (that I know works), reseating everything except the processor, clearing CMOS, and running barebones. None of it has gotten me a post or progressed the system past that D-bracket step.
I'm sorry to have to make a new thread about it, but I'm really at a loss for what it might be. Has anyone else had a system crap out on them suddenly for no (apparent) reason? I leave the system on for about 3-4 days at a time, I'm not sure if that's pertinent or not. Any advice would be appreciated.
    Specs:
    MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum/SLI Rev 1.1
    AMD 64 3500+ Venice
    Patriot 1GB (2x512) PC3200 DDR @2-2-2-5
    Aspire 550W PSU
    Leadtek WinfastKVR 6800GT
    Lite-On DVD-RW
    Hitachi 80GB SATA2
    WD 250GB IDE 7200
    All at default clocks

What BIOS are you using.  There are significant issues with USB in any BIOS below 3.6.  I flashed mine to 3.7 using Winflash with no problems, and now it is running sweet.    Also, that PSU you are using isn't too hot.  Before you flash the BIOS, read the threads about this issue and how to properly flash using Winflash.  And before that, try disconnecting all USB devices and disable "Boot from other devices" in the BIOS.

  • K8n neo 4 plat developed recent problem

    Hello there.
My system has been running perfectly for what seems like years now.
Last week though, it developed what seems like a pretty serious fault.
While using the PC it will randomly crash during various tasks, playing a game or using skype etc.
After the crash the PC tends to show the power light and I hear all the fans spinning , my mouse lights up but the PC does not boot at all, not even to the bios picture.
Pressing the reset button leads me back to same place, I have to power the PC down my holding the power button for a few seconds.
Sometimes after leaving the PC for a few hours it will run fine again then again crash randomly. Sometimes soon, sometimes after many hours use.
Temps are fine when I check the bios. I even removed the cpu cleaned it and reapplied paste.
I've tried removing sound card, dvd, floppy, reinstalled XP, switched gfx card, cleared cmos many times and updated bios. All to no avail.
Wondering if the MB is dying a slow death now? Seeing as it often turns on with all the fans on and nothing but a black screen ( no beeps )
    Any ideas?

  • K8N Neo 2 Plat Upgrade to ver 1.b

In this new Bios there are now two cranks for controlling the CPU Voltage------------- ADJ CPU VID and CPU VOLTAGE.  Can anyone please tell me how these two adjustments work together in controlling the CPU volts?  Perhaps these were present in ver. 1.9 also.  I don't know, as I jumped from 1.8 straight to 1.b.  I'd appreciate any help.
    Thanks, WhiskeySam

been through this one a couple of times... I think it should be fixed, but some feel that its not a big deal.. bottom line, it not a problem, everything is fine, just an annoying message.

  • Mushkin 2X 1GB in K8N Neo 4 Plat (PCB 1.0)

Been a while folks, been thinking of getting a 2GB kit for my setup, I like to have a lot of things running and I think I could benefit from the xtra RAM. And, I might consider installing Vista later just to play around with, since some of my clients are running it, and the new systems I am selling are coming with it. I still offer XP, but some of my customers want Vista (don't ask me why)
Anyone running this combination? Any input even if you aren't?
    http://www.mushkin.com/doc/products/memory_detail.asp?id=193
It's either that, or put the money towards a new rig. I've been selling a lot of Intel Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Quad systems lately, and I really like the performance compared to my current system.
My current setup is in my sig

I'm obviously not running your MOBO, but I am using that RAM. I used to do a small overclock but haven't tried an OC with this set.  I did memtest(overnight) and Orthos(24hrs) and passed with flying colors.  2GB has definitely improved load and unload times for some games I play(TF2, BF1942 for example) and is a boon for video editing.
I don't know what the heatsinks are like on the ones you have now, but I wouldn't press on the heatsink to insert the RAM for these sticks. Unfortunately, there is only a small corner of the PCB exposed to press on for inserting the RAM. Probably very painful. I actually had a couple of small round dowels I used to press on the PCB and save my thumbs.  I read about one guy who got Chopsticks from a Chinese restaurant and used those. He cut a 1 inch section from the ends, put the section perpindicular to the PCB onto the corner and pressed on the chopstick sections to insert the RAM. I made an illustration to be clear. I'm sure you know what I was discribing Glenn, but I wanted it to be clear for others who read this.  The dowel method I use work flawlessly.

  • MSI k8N neo 2 Plat: Wont turn on

I am having a serious problem with my mainboard. After some problems with the system not turning on i removed all the components including the CPU to try and illimnate any dead components stopping it from turning on. Once the board was empty of components i hooked up a PSU - in this state the Mainboard powered on straightaway (its just powers up without putting contact across the power switch pins). Thus i concluded that the CPU might be dead and ordered a new one.
I have the new cpu and put it in to test. Again i am still having the same problem only this time when you connect the psu upto it and put power to the PSU the fans twitch (like they get power and the mainboard goes into standby mode). But it still wont turn on, i havent tried the system with complete GFX and hdd's attached yet. Does anyone have any experience with this issue?
    Thanks,
    Peter Wright

Well i have actually had the system running before perfectly - its because i use vapour phase cooling, the system was running for over a week (i think i've had it running on both PSU's) - i had to reseat the vapour phase cooling .
It was only after putting the system back together that it stopped functioning. I managed to get it to turn on but it was in like a reset state where all you could tell was the system was booting up to the point before the beep but just looping back to this point - possibly caused by the short on the 2 pins in the IDE socket on the board. but nothing since.

  • Msi k8n neo 2 plat usb problems

ok just built this rig and having minor difficulties with usb ports. have my mouse pluged into usb port. at first everything was fine, but within seconds of starting windows my mouse will first lag out for a second or two then it will totally die. i plug the mouse into the usb ports in the rea of my computer. after the mouse totally dies i plug it into a diffrent usb port either front or back and the same thing will happen. it will work for  five minutes then just totally die. all the drivers are installed ( almost positive, downloaded sp2 and latest drivers from msi site) and i dont know what to do. could it be the mouse or is it the board? please help cause if it is the board i need to rma it as soon as possible b4 my 30 day free shipping period is up, thanks for anyinput u can give me.

Do you have any other USB devices?  Are they working OK?
Does your mouse work OK with any other computer?
Without anything else to go on its very difficult to diagnose, but as a guess I would say your mouse is faulty.

  • K8N Neo 2 Plat. NVRAID - problem installing Vista Beta 2, anyone can help???

now, since this board is supported by the nForce 3 ultra chipset and that nVidia has not yet develloped 64-bit Windows Vista Beta 2 drivers for NVRAID (64 bit of course), system drivers have been available.
the online upgrade checker program thing that is used by Microsoft to verify if vista beta 2 will install properly on this board says I might have trouble with SATA Raid support since it does not recognize the nForce 3 ultra NVRAID.
Does anyone have the slightest idea where these driver could be found or will MSI devellop them in time cause I have a copy that is waiting to be installed but it will simply not recognize my hard disk or will not see it at all.
my disks are 3 x WD Raptor 74GB in RAID 0

tried that already guys!!!!! these drivers support nForce4 and above.........................
I even tried nVidia support, and them to tell me to contact MSI since they haven'T develloped any.........................
this is lame..... I mean the board ain't that old.....
well, if nvidia support doesn't have any, than MSI won't have any. i don't know why you think it's lame if a manufacturer doesn't have drivers for an operating system that is not even released yet (beta doesn't mean it is final).

  • K8N Neo 2 Hidden Bios Options!!!

    Hi,
Has anyone tried those new options and can tell me what they do exactly??
To enable them you must press Shift+F2 and Alt+F3 rapidly in the bios.
Then go in the cell menu and you will find new options:
    NV/ATI Speedup
    Dram drive strenght
    PCI clock auto detect
I am wondering why has MSI been hidding this from the users and if there are other combinations for other hidden options.

I have recently put the system together but have suspicions about settings in the bios.
could you tell me what your settings are FSB, Multipliers, Voltages, etc etc.
Sisoft Sandra tells me that my CPU Voltage is set to low but I never touched this setting, alla bit confusing for a noob at this, I was just relieved that it hung together and it works but not sure where to start, I intend on some mild forrays into Over Clocking but nothing nuts..
I have my Ram set up for 1T and tight timings 2-2-2-5 but I know it has got loads of headroom but not sure where to start.
I ran a 2001 default benchmark and got 29250 so it can't be far off in the settings. I just seek re assurance I guess and sorry if I have hi jacked the thread a bit, just realised.
    Thanx.

    Great scores by the way.

Installing Win XP Pro upgrade (have my 98SE CD)
In the future I will possibly ditch my scsi DVD rom and replace with NEC dual layer burner and replace Plextor CDRW with 52/32/52 CDRW/DVD ROM. For now I'm going with what I have.
No plans to overclock now if ever. Perhaps a small amount later. Maybe 2.0 ghz? Maybe no overclocking at all.
Not a gaming rig really, although I'll try the odd game at low resolution.
So is there anything I should do ahead of time? I am carefully installing the board in the case and everything that goes with it. What sort of configuration setups should I do? Do I flash to a more updated BIOS first? Do I leave onboard things un-activated first? How do I setup my memory? For instance, I may look for the best BIOS to start with and have it ready to use if I have problems. I may also use the nVidia drivers for onboard audio instead of the realtek drivers.
Not looking for all the answers, just feel free to point out any of the obvious which may save me time
thanx in advance for any help

There is a compatibility issue betwen the Matrox G series cards and the MSI  Neo Platinum motherboards, which AFAIK, hasn't been solved yet. The problem seems to be a result of changes made in the newer versions of the MSI bios, however you may be stuck if you need a newer bios for the Winchester cpu. You can find out more if you do a search on Matrox in this forum.
