Is there a similar file to windows\ssytem32\drivers\etc\hosts in OS X
Hi,
I am running a Windows 2003 Server with several websites. I would like to view my websites from my new Imac, however I keep getting prompted for the user name and password for the router.
In windows on my old computer I could edit the file C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc\hosts with the IP address and URL of the site and it would open. Is there a similar file in the Mac OS X 10.5.7 software.
Many Thanks in anticipation

Adding host records by editing the /etc/hosts file is not entirely reliably. Since Leopard, some people have reported issues of the added host records "mysteriously" disappearing, or Apache not being able to properly resolve the added hosts. The bigger issue is that the modifications in the /etc/hosts file can create unwanted side effects in the normal functioning of services like the mail server and others.
Since Leopard, there has been an alternate way to add host records using the dscl utility. In fact, by many, it is considered the better, more reliable, and safer method.
You can read this recent article to see how its done:
http://tomafro.net/2009/07/dscl-the-easy-way-to-add-hosts-on-osx
There are a number of additional articles on the web about using dscl for adding host records to OS X.
The choice, of course, is yours. If you are using the /etc/hosts file without issue, then it might be safe to continue doing so. But, if your system starts experiencing domain name resolution issues or problems with services such as the mail server, you should consider switching to and using the dslocal database to manage your host records.

What is the real ip address to the apple server? Someone changed the host file in windows/system32/drivers/ect, and now I can't do a restore on my iPhone 3gs
"You have to change your router's IP address to be able to access it. It will not give you the internet."
I'm not sure what that means Richard, but I did change the router's IP address from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.5.1- isn't that what you meant in your first post. I know that isn't reflected in my screen capture that I took last night, but I did do that this morning after I read your post.
"Log on to your router and change two settings.
Change the setting in Setup from PPPoE to Automatic Configuration-DHCP and click on save.
Click on Advance Routing and change the setting from Gateway to Router then click on save."
I did this and still same results as far as I can tell. Can't get online through the router.
"Click on MAC address clone under setup tab ... click enable & click clone ...click save settings ... Check the IPaddress under WAN page ....
If getting IP in public range .... try going online ...."
I tried this- at least to the part about checking the IP address under WAN. I assume you mean the WAN page in the modem setup- nothing looked any different after trying what you suggested, and I'm not really sure where I would be "getting IP in public range" or what that means.
I'm about to give up and just buy a new router to see if I can get the same lack of results with a different one. My ISP maintains that everything is set up correctly on their end and really can't do anything more for me. The Modem works and is set up correctly and they can give tech support for a router.
Here's what my basic setup looks like now:

Here's what the advanced tab looks like now:

Modem setup looks the same

MOVED: Eclipse SLI & Windows 7 Drivers, etc
This topic has been moved to Windows 7.
https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=126646.0Hey Guys,
I actually have a dv9000 laptop myself so I was floored when I found out that HP would only support a few of the top laptop models for Windows 7 drivers. After doing alot of research and countless tinkering, I found the way to counteract at least one of the many woes many of you are feeling, updating NVIDIA GPU Drivers.
What I did was I went to HP's support site and downloaded their softpaq solution including the NVIDIA drivers for Vista (in my case, the 64-bit version). When it tries to install, it will fail saying that the version of Windows you're using is not Vista. By all means let it fail but don't exit unless you do so by the installer. This is where the next part comes in.
Go to the Screen Resolution Settings under Display and click on Advanced Settings. At this point, it should show you the properties of your card starting on the Adapter tab. Click on Properties and then the Driver tab. At this point, click on the Update Driver button and then click on the "Browse my computer for driver software." For my software, I found it under "C:/swsetup/sp42365/WinVista64." If you remember which softpaq file you downloaded, finding your path should be a piece of cake. After all of that, it should finally recognize your video card and ask you to reboot. If you're successful, you should be back at that 1400x900 resolution we all love.
I'll keep researching to see if the other softpad drivers react the same. I wish that HP at least tells people about this option since it's fairly easy to follow. -
Certain files excluded (e.g. /etc/hosts) ?
On our network we have several machines that we just put in our local /etc/hosts file. A coworker recently restored from a Time Machine backup and it didn't restore his /etc/hosts file. That's fine since others have that same information.
Leaving aside the question of whether we put those servers in our dns server...
I am a .mac subscriber and am used to using Backup which is predictable. Does anyone know if there are certain default exceptions for Time Machine - that it does not back up? That might be useful in case I have system files that I actually want to keep the way they are or back up separately. There are certain files/file_types that TM ignores, like things in the trash and, I think, caches. Exactly which ones, I don't know.

I have a Seagate Drive that I'm hoping to copy some movies from my Mac onto (because it only has a 512 SSD and I'd rather keep that empty and handy for more readily needed files) but it won't work. It shows up as a drive when connected (with the orange USB drive icon popping up) and is appropirately labeled "FreeAgent Drive", but when I try to copy files onto it it won't work. There are already windows files on there, such as some windows backups and lot's and lot's of pictures and videos. However, I have several USBs which already have windows files on them (namely movies, music, and other stuff) and copying and stuff works fine. Why won't it work with this hard drive and would work with USBs? Please help me out here guys, I am not experienced with Hard disks and formatting and stuff like that. 10 points for whoever helps me out the most. Thanks.
We will need to reformat your EXT, but it will then work on both Mac and Win
Connect the drive to your Mac, open disk utility
Go to the partiton tab and select '1' ... format should be ExFAT ... in options select MBR
Format the drive
It should now work on both OSs; report back -

Hi,
Pls confirm if you are using Windows 2000 Pro, in this O/S the
hostname is the name of the computer itself. Check the
MyComputer->Properties->Network Identification->Properties, the name you
find under the computer name will be automatically taken while
installation, if it doesn't then there is some error. However the
C:\Winnt\System32\Drivers\Etc\hosts doesn't matter much while installing
iAS 6.0 SP1 or above. Hope this helps
Regards
Raj

Do I need to provide the physcial hostname to iAS during installation

HP Pavilion g6-1270si Notebook PC Windows 10 Drivers
Hi, Is there any word on when windows 10 drivers will be made available on the website for my laptop? My HP Pavilion g6-1270si Notebook currently has no drivers for windows 10 and I am unbale to use the wireless features of this laptop. Windows live update does not return any results for the wireless lan driver update either. The windows 7 and 8 wireless lan drivers do not work in Windows 10 (as to be expected). I have waited through the whole windows 10 insider program until now for the windows 10 drivers but as of yet there is absolutley no trace of them. Any help would be appreciated.
I've been told by Microsoft tech support that HP and other manufacturers are currently try to get their drivers up to speed with Windows 10 requirements as it appears the most troublesome drivers are the graphics drivers that they have customized from the original Intel versions. This is incredibly annoying and inconsiderate of HP to have left so many of its drivers out of date while Intel has been upgrading the originals all along for years. I was having RAM crashes due to my HD Graphics 4000 for a couple of years now, with no ability to fix the problem because HP had not done any updates. My hope was that the combination of the Windows 10 upgrade along with its own driver replacements would solve the problem. Well, it didn't. It just highlighted the problem for many more users to experience. HP is going to lose a lot of customers if they don't get on the ball with this.

Acer One 10 (S1002) Windows 10 Drivers?
I have an Acer One 10 (S1002) and am unable to find drivers for it. Not just Windows 10 drivers but even on the support site there are no 32-bit Windows 8 drivers either. In fact there is only a single Windows 8 64-bit driver which I find perplexing as it's a 32-bit UEFI. I did a clean install of Windows 10 wiping the SSD and all paritiions. After installing Windows 10 I have a long list of "unknown devices" in the device manager. I have no sound, the tablet/laptop won't go to sleep, there is no battery icon, ALL of the hardware buttons (power, volume) don't work, cameras don't work, keyboard and touchpad stop working after being detached, etc... I have contacted support as I have installed Windows 10 on it multiple times however I have gotten no real help from them other than them telling me I need to seach on the internet for drivers and that they are sorry but drivers are not ready from their support site. As suggested I tried using their hardware diagnostic tool to find a list of the hardware in my machine so I could go download drivers from the manufacturers sites however the tool runs but shows I have no hardware. The representative couldn't even give me a list of hardware so I could go around and find drivers for it. I mean come on, are you serious... LOL! I have 4 Macs, 4 Windows PCs, 6 Windows laptops, 3 Samsung Android tablets and 3 Windows tablets from various companies and have NEVER had an issue getting drivers for any of them or at the very minimum a list of hardware until now. As a first time Acer customer I must say that I am quite displeased with the level of support for my deivce. I get not having Windows 10 drivers as it's brand new but come on...
As a test last night I threw Windows 8.1 Pro on my S1002 to see if I could get drivers installed and working. Windows Update couldn't find drivers for a lot of the hardware so I tried both the SW3-013 and SW5-012 drivers and I had the same result as in Windows 10. The Intel Platform drivers partially worked, the WLAN driver worked, but the screen won't turn off, the audio driver didn't work, there is no Intel HD Graphics driver working, the GPIO Button driver was borked so none of the buttons work, and there was some unknown devices showing. I tried various drivers from Realtek and the Intel SST Audio drivers as 2 of the unknown devices are showing up as those via the Hardware IDs but no luck. As for the GPIO Button drivers I tried various drivers for S series Acer laptops as well as a Lenovo driver but no luck on those either.

I use a website in my daily work activities that I need to have multiple sessions of the website open at any given time. Natively, I cannot have multiple sessions open in a single browser (separated tabs or separate windows) without one session taking over the other. Internet Explorer has a command line option (-nomerge) that will allow me to accomplish what I need. The target line of the IE shortcut properties would look like this:
"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" -nomerge
Is there a similar solution for Firefox?
I am running Windows 7, IE11 and Firefox 26
Thank you in advance,
RobertHello rpvincent, try
* firefox.exe -new-window <url>
(the url is without < >)
