Is there a "slim" effect Motion(5)

I've seen some (older) movies and especially credits filmed with a narrowing effect and wondered if it was possible with motion.
And while I'm at it, what about a saturated/technicolor(?) effect?
Sorry, complete novice that hasn't yet purchased Motion, and will start by using it with IMovie.
Thank You

For short pieces,  3 - 5 or so minute visuals for original music, Motion will do just fine by itself. You will also have available to you: Audio parameter behaviors to control any other parameter available in your project.
Here are a few examples of using audio behaviors:

If you have an audio app that will split tracks on export (like Logic), you can do some really cool stuff by using individual instrument tracks as source audio for the audio behaviors.
Have fun!

  • Is there a 2D Effect for Final Cut?

This is related to a previous question of mine about perspective.
I have used the 3D effect for a piece of work, but is there a 2D effect that is available? I am able to create a 3D effect for a piece of video but I would like to move the video to the left and to the right (without changing the perspective), which I'm assuming I'd be able to do using a 3D filter/effect.
    Thanks in advance!

Try adding a (second) Basic 3D filter to your stack to handle the left right motion, but making sure to add it before the main 3D filter you use to achieve your main effect. The order in which the effects are applied is important in how the overall composite will be perceived.
Failing that, you might just be attempting too complicated a 3D move in what is essentially a 2D editing application ... consider either using a dedicated DVE plugin like those offered by Boris or maybe CGM's DVE plugin CGM DVE Complete.
...or why not use Motion for this task, assuming you have the most recent Final Cut Studio bundle then Motion 3 will offer you a true 3D space to model your effect and you can use a Motion Template to make any move you modeled easily available as a reusable effect directly in FCP

I have a small production client looking to run 1 workstation running Mac Lion 10.7.3 and two work stations running Windows7 64 bit. They will all be talking to the same storage array through 8Gb FC. What is there most cost effective way to do this?

    Thank you for your help.
The client has already made the jump to 8Gb including HBA's, switch and RAID Storage.
The other question will be if they need a seperate Mac Server to run the Meta Data or are they able to use the current Mac they are running to do this?
The Mac is a 201073 model they say with 12 Dual Core 2.66Mhz processors and 16 GB of Memory. This system is currently doing rendering. It has the XSAN Client but I understand for the solution to work they need to also run XSAN Server on a MDC.

  • Is there an After Effects Plugin project template/skeleton for Qt Creator?

Is there an After Effects Plugin project template/skeleton for Qt Creator?
I mean, Qt is considered to be cross platform and it would be handy if you provided a sample plugin project since Adobe targets multiple platforms.
(I don't like Qt Creator either, but in order to make a cross-platform plugin I guess I have to go down this path...)

No, there is not. It's a good feature request, though:

  • Is there a way to motion track a point in a shape layer?

    Hi all,
Is there a way to motion track a point in a shape layer?
    Thanks

As Mylenium points out, you can't to it directly.  But if you're willing to jump through a hoop, you can: Precomp that shape layer!
Now AE will see it as another piece of footage, which can be motion tracked.  You can use Mocha or AE built-in motion tracker, depending on the nature of your precomp.
Alternately, you can simply parent a null object to the shape layer.  After you do so, you can adjust the null's position, positioning it precisely where you want it to be in relationship to the shape layer.  It will then maintain that relative position, following right along with any animation applied to the shape layer.

  • Are there 3rd party effects plugins available as part of the cloud or do I have to buy them?

Are there 3rd party effect plugins available as part of the Creative Cloud membership or do I have to buy them directly from the provider? I like a lot of the stuff I see on Video Copilot. I'm new here and my guess is I have to buy them there, but want to make sure I'm not overlooking something here.

There are a lot of plug-ins available in AE and I would highly recommend learning the basics before you start buying 3rd party effects. Without a really good understanding of how AE works, what the UI is used for, and getting a bit of a handle on how to compose and edit animations you're going to be just parking your investment for a while until you learn how to use AE. I could easily fill up the two or three semesters in a Masters program at a university with nothing more than what comes with AE.
If you have a very specific need for a very specific effect and your are under a deadline then it's often advisable to purchase a effect, but if you are intent on learning how to animate, composite and create magic then just about anything you have seen can be created with the standard set of plug-ins.

  • After Effects Transform Effect  is there something similar in Motion?

Is there a way to something similar to the AE transform effect to offset the motion caused by the displace filter.
    Example here:
    http://www.videocopilot.net/tutorial/disintegration/
    Starting at time 8:06
    Thanks
    Andrew

    Interesting tutorial, thanks!
Here's a quickie Motion version covering the basic concepts they use. I didn't have a texture handy and I wanted this to be self contained, so I used the Cloud generator. I animated the gradient in a gradient generator to get the wipe, substituted Gradient Colorize for "Colorama", Underwater filter for "Turbulent Displace", used behaviors instead of keyframes, etc...
I hope this gets you started:

    and the Project.
    come back with any questions...

  • Shake, After Effects, Motion?

Is Shake equivalent to After Effects? Also, where does Motion fall into the scheme of things. Im trying to understand what the differences is between all 3 of these programs. I have no experience with any of them. Can someone explain and suggest what they think is the best program to learn?

    Well,
There are many things that all 3 apps can do that are either equal or similar.
You can key, composite and generate, to a degree, in all. Each do things better than the others.
AE and Motion are layer based apps (like Photoshop).
    Shake is node based.
AE and Motion do particles and text effects really well out of the box.
Over on mograph.net the same question was just asked. Below are some of the responses:
    Shake is really great at:
Using one object to matte many things at once- no pre-composing, no unneccesary multiple matte layers.
Compositing files that contain z-depth information in z-space.
    Complex keying and color correction.
Floating color calculations (for example, multiple instances of brightness contrast, hue saturation, curves, levels, and other color correcters are all calculated together as one operation, so the image doesn't get crunchy and lose it's integrity).
It has arguably the best written software manual EVER. Seriously.
    It's really non-linear.
It's more suited towards compositing and finishing, and less towards graphics content creation. If you are switching from AE to Shake, download the AE plugins for shake from High End 2D.
    And:
IMO shake is good at tuning fine color corrections, 3d composite, roto and tracking.
    And:
Shake is good at setting up things at the core of what Compositing is all about. Concatenation and Piping nodes together. It seems to be more of a VFX kinda tool. I couldn't see design type or anything to mograph with it.
But it does do some cool things that in AE takes longer or can't do. Like being able to offset the tracker and the roto tool. You can link a tracker to a mask point.

  • Are there any problems with motion menus and buttons in DVDSP 2 on OS 10.4?

I have not used DVD Studio Pro 2 since upgrading to Tiger but it appears to no longer be showing moving motion on menus and buttons.

I have not upgrade to a newer version only because I do not have any HD software to create DVDs.

Alright, I decided to go with an MSI GTX 980 Gaming w\ 4GB DDR5 for the video card since it has a good amount or VRAM, CUDA cores, and is ranked as one of the best graphics cards available right now. I'm sure by the time I can afford to build the rig they'll be even more reasonable. Right now they're actually under $700 which imho is pretty damn reasonable already for the performance.
You mentioned that HDD RAIDs need larger sets to see fast speeds. Should I use SSDs instead? To me it doesn't matter either way. I would rather pay the higher price for SSDs if I'm going to get a big performance bump. You also mention RAID 6. Would you recommend that over RAID 10? Like I mentioned in my original post, I am very new to using raid and want to use the best array for my needs. I am going to be working with pretty large video files, especially once I start editing 4K video, and did read that HDDs work better for some odd reason than SSDs with large (non-random?) reads (and possibly writes).
Hypothetically what do you think about this drive setup?
4 x Intel 730's using RAID 10 (internal hot swapable) for my OS/Apps which would give me a good performance bump from using a striped array but also the redundancy I need in case a drive fails.
2 x 4TB HDDs using RAID 0 to store completed projects. I'll also be backing up to an external drive, blu-rays, or a cloud server.
1 x 256GB SSD to use as a scratch disk for any apps that need it, primarily for Premiere & After Effects
Can you think of any reason to add another drive in there somewhere I'm not thinking of, or change that setup at all? Thanks for your input btw.

  • Activating 3d for a layer effects motion blur strangely

    Hello all
I have a comp in which a jpg logo moves quickly across frame into position, I have motion blur enabled for the composition and the layer and it works fine. I would now like to do more work on the composition that involves camera moves so I have enabled 3d for the layer containing the logo and my motion blur, well, doesn't dissapear exactly but neither does it stay.
I have a couple of images here to explain better...
    http://www.tinycards.co.uk/aftereffects
sorry if this is a stupid mistake!
    many thanks

ok half fixed it myself, I discovered the "samples per frame" setting in advanced composition settings
if I set this at 35-40 I get a nice smooth blur.
I have a smaller problem now however ,the 3d version is brighter than the 2d version, I assume this is because of the composite mode it uses to merge the 40 or so frames to make the blur. Is there any way of controlling this accurately?
Also does anyone know why motion blur sample rate is automatic in 2d and not 3d?
