Is there a Spaces like Program for Tiger?  I need multiple desktops...

Anyone know of a Spaces like program that allows me to have multiple desktops?
I am needing to run parallels in full screen mode but still have full screen access to my OS-X and it is really bugging me that when I alt-tab out of full screen parallels, I still have a parallels window sitting there...
Any suggestions would be really really great.
Thank you.

  • Is there An anti-virus program for a Mac Book Pro

Is there an ant-virus program for a Mac Book Pro?

YES, there is. It is built into Mac OS X. All you need to do to use it is keep Mac OS X up-to-date.
This built-in Anti-Virus works better and is far less obtrusive than any third-party stuff you can add on. Most of the third-party anti-Virus add-ons are JUNK.
But Viruses, while they cannot be ignored, are actually quite rare on the Mac. If you have a flashy anti-Virus scan that reminds you it is there by slowing down your Mac and visibly scanning things, you can lull yourself into thinking you are protected, but you are NOT!
A much more serious problem is malware, and most malware requires you to help (or at least be complicit) to get onto your Mac. Nothing can replace your constant Vigilance. They ARE out to get you, and steal your financial data, and take over your Mac.
Don't click on ANY links sent to you in emails.
Don't visit Torrent sites, and don't download software from third-party sites.
Don't download "players" from the same site that is providing the content.
No one can tell whether your Mac is infected with anything from outside your Mac. This is ALWAYS a scam.

  • Is there a Video eMail program for the eMac?

I have an external video camera hooked up to my eMac and would like to use it for Video Emails. On the PC's there are several free programs, including iGoogle and MS Messenger that allow this. Yet when I try to use them on the eMac, they state they aren't compatible with PowerPC chips, only Intel-based MACs. I've searched the internet for "Free Video Email for MAC" but failed to find anything that would work on the eMac. Several would work only with iSight, which I don't have.

    (1) Perhaps you mean video chat or conference rather than video email? I no longer use a PC, but I could not see how either iGoogle or MS Messenger offers Video Email.
If you really want to send video email, all you need an OS X app that can capture a video clip. You can attach those saved clips to your email. If this is what you want to do, you likely already have an app that can capture video if your camera is compatible with your eMac.
However, if you do not already know which app you want to use to capture your video clips, take a look at this page for some candidate apps you can consider:
      http://www.ralphjohns.co.uk/EZJim/EZJimpage7.html
If you already have Apple's iMovie, QuickTime Pro, or Photo Booth, any of them can capture video for emailing provided that your camera is compatible with the app and Mac OS you are using. Other apps in the linked list might be compatible with your cameras, so, if your camera is not supported with the software you have, you may want to take a look at the system requirements and compatibility info for some of the other apps that can capture movie/video clips.
    (2) If your external video camera is either Firewire or a "UVC" device, and, if your eMac 1.25Ghz PowerPC G4 is one of those listed in this page
      http://support.apple.com/kb/SP44
your camera should work with your Mac OS X (10.5.8) without need for any driver software.
    (3) If you cannot make the desired applications work with your camera, and, if your camera is one of those listed as a "should work" in
      http://webcam-osx.sourceforge.net/cameras/index.php
the macam driver you can download from the links there may let you use your camera with your existing system.
    (4) If your camera is not compatible with both the version of OS X and the applications you use, you may want to consider a different camera. For more info see:
      http://www.mac-compatible-web-cam.com/
    (5) If I have misunderstood, when you post back, please give the specifics of which camera you want to use and what app you want to use with your video camera.

  • Can anyone recommend a powerpoint-like program for mac that is free?

I cannot afford to spend a fortune on power point but my kids are always needing to do pp presentations for school.  Is there a good free program out there or even one with a lower price point?

Apple's Keynote (like Power Point) is available by itself through the App store for $19.99, however, you need to be at OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later to access the App store.
You can also buy the iWork suite, which has Keynote, Numbers (think excel), and Pages (think Word) for $79 from Apple. If being downlevel one release is OK, the iWork '08 package is available through an Amazon vendor for $38.98 which includes shipping.

  • Is there a trade up program for ipad?

I really want an ipad2 but dont want to take a beating on my ipad 1. Any way to trade up through apple?

Actually, they don't give 10% for recycling; at least not in any country I know of. The 10% recycling credit only applies to iPods, and toward the purchase of another iPod. That program doesn't apply to iPads at any Apple Store I know about. The only program for the iPad is, as I mentioned, the program through the third-party company:
    http://store.apple.com/us/browse/reuse_and_recycle
If that program isn't available in your country, then to the best of my knowledge an independent sale will be your only option unless there's a local dealer that takes trade-ins.
    Regars.

  • Anything like Bento for Tiger?

I have Filemaker's Bento on my iMac, running Leopard and love it. My laptop however, is an iBook G3 with Tiger installed, and Bento won't work on any OS before Leopard, so..
Does anyone know of something that provides a small customizable database that integrates iCal and Address Book? I use iCal, Address Book, and Mail for my business, but need a good way to take down a bunch of notes, and maintain contact with customers. The notes are usually the same each time I take them, and I need to refer to them over and over.
Any ideas would be awesome. Thanks!!
    Stephen

About the only thing readily available for both Tiger and Leopard
to do these kinds of functions, and be transferable between all,
could be the feature set in MobileMe... as it gains strength and
the product gets on track to being the high standard we'd expect.
    { MobileMe and an iPhone? There's two interesting considerations! }
However, that is a service; and not a product for Tiger to do for
you what Bento does in Leopard. There should be some kind of
shareware to fulfill this rather basic need. Have you tried the
    software downloads page: http://www.apple.com/downloads/ ?
Some of the other software sites have links to shareware & free-
    ware, such as http://versiontracker.com & http://macupdate.com
which are searchable and also have a by topic index.
Hopefully someone with a more precise contribution will appear.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Is there a wise uninstaller program for iMac Sow Leopard

I have some programs on my Mac that I don't want to use any more and I want to uninstall them. I know I can uninstall them by dragging them to the Trash from the Applications folder, but I want to make sure that all of the related files and folders that go with those programs are also removed from my Mac.
I don't want to have to spend ages searching through my hard-drive or using Terminal commands (actually I am not that good in the Terminal) and so I was wondering if there is a program that acts like a wise uninstaller or something. Something that will search for all of the files and folders that relate to the programs I am uninstalling and delete them along with the program itself.
I really hope someone can help me
    Huge Thanks
    Jay

There are several of them, but they're not needed.
If the program doesn't use an installer and didn't ask for an admin password to install something when first started, it didn't put anything anywhere that will cause any problems and the files are so small as to not matter.
If it does use an installer, it may have added things to login items, LaunchAgents, or LaunchDaemons, or StartupItems. Those are all in your user Library or the main HD/Library except Login Items which is in the Accounts System prefs.
The rest is just detritus. Hunt it down and collect it all if you want to waste your time.
Now if it is some form of hardware that requires an extension to operate, it better have come with an uninstaller.
Please, help out the cause. If you install a program with an installer and it didn't come with an uninstaller, send a note to the developer. They know where they put stuff, so they should provide a way to remove it.

  • Is there an anti virus program for mac 9.1? Think I have a virus

I don't use an anti virus - using outlook express I got a strange message with no subject or sender - just a blank line. I tried deleting it but it wouldn't be deleted. Since then every time I try to delete it - it crashes the system. Same with Internet Explorer. And now my main screen icons will just 'disappear' from the screen then it crashes.
I tried looking for an antivirus but all of them seem to be for 9.2 or higher and I don't know what to do - if I upload to 9.2 will I loose any programs or files - new to this from the PC world. Thanks
    G4   Mac OS 9.1.x

    Hi, debbieM -
    Welcome to Apple's Discussions.
It is doubtful that you have a virus - no virus which can harm OS 9 has been released in well over 10 years.
Getting a message every now and then with no subject and no body is not unusual. There are a couple of ways to get rid of a message without opening it.
Click on an adjacent message which is okay to delete, then hold down the Shift key and select the blank messages - none of them will open. Once you have selected all the ones for deletion, press the Delete key.
Or, click and hold on a message; or press the Control key and click and hold on a message. A contextual menu should appear; one of the choices in that menu shuld be to delete the messge. If you choose that, it should happen without the message ever opening.
Things you can do to make Outlook Express run smoother -
    • Increase the Preferred memory allocation for it. Adding 20 or 30 thousand to the original Preferred amount, or even more if you have sufficient RAM, is not excessive.
Article #18278 - Assigning More Memory to an Application
    • Compact the databases. To do that - with OE not running, hold down the Option key and start up OE. A splash screen will open, asking if you want to compact the database files - click okay, and follow the prompts.
For Internet Explorer, increase its Preferred memory, a lot. Adding 30 to 50 thousand is not excessive.
And now my main screen icons will just 'disappear' from the screen then it crashes.
That could indicate one or more other problems.
    • How full is your hard drive? It is good practice to not allow your hard drive to get more than 85% full. When it does get more full than that, odd behaviors including an unstable OS begin occuring.
    • Try rebuilding the desktop file (note that the desktop file has very little to do with the desktop). To rebuild the desktop safely, restart - immediately hold down the Shift key until you get the "Extensions Off" message; then release Shift and hold down the Command and Option keys until you get the splash screen asking if you want to rebuild the desktop; click yes (or okay). Once that's done, restart to turn your extensions back on.
    • Boot to your most recent OS 9 Install CD, one valid for that machine - ideally it would be OS 9.1, the same as is on the machine. Once booted to the CD, run Disk First Aid from the Utilities folder on the CD. Let DFA have a look at your hard drive, and allw it to repair what it can - it may take more than one pass to do this, especially if the drive is rather full.
If DFA finds things it just can't fix, post back with the description of the problems found.
if I upload to 9.2 will I loose any programs or files....
Updating the OS from OS 9.1 to OS 9.2.1 should not cause any loss of files.
However, in general updating an OS is not a fix for a damaged or unstable OS. It is better to get the OS now on the drive healthy before updating it.
When the machine goes unstable (icons begin disappearing, etc.) are there any error messages?

  • I have FF7, but to run a program for work I need FF3. Is there a way to normally run FF7, but have access to FF3?

I have a project required for work that is incompatible with FF7. My computer is upgraded to FF7. The program is compatible with FF3. Is there some way to have access to FF3 while keeping my FF7 for regular use?

"SheepShaver is an Open Source PowerPC MacOS run-time environment. That is, it enables you to run PowerPC Classic MacOS software on your computer, even if you are using a different operating system. However, you still need a copy of MacOS and a PowerMacintosh ROM image to use this program. SheepShaver is distributed under the terms of the GNU General Public License (GPL). "

Installing Mac OS Classic on SheepShaver is a struggle. There is some instability once you have completed the installation.

  • Is there a trade-in program for iPad 2?

I'm a professional photographer and finding that 32GB is really not enough space for me.  A total of 64GB would be close to perfect.  So I'm wondering if I can simply trade my current one in.  It's in perfect conditiion.

Apple in conjunction with another company has a recycling program where you can get some value for your current iPad. See:
    http://www.apple.com/recycling/gift-card/
Amazon and some other dealers also offer trade-in programs. But in almost all such cases, you can get more, usually significantly more, by selling your iPad yourself.
