Is there a standard approved method of transferring your itunes library from an old pc (windows Vista) to a new one (almost certainly Windows 7)? I can't find anything on the standard Apple websites.
If not, how do people do it generally?

Type " move itunes library" into the google search bar.

  • I need help transferring my itunes content from an old exteranl hard drive to a new one. The itunes media folder is on the external drive, the itunes library file (.itl) resides on my mac in the music folder.

I have already copied over from the old hard drive to the new hard drive the iTunes media folder (423 GB). But this does not contain the iTunes Library .itl file which for good or bad reason has been working from the mac itself from inside the user music folder. In iTunes Preferences, Adanced Preferences window the iTunes media fold location is currently set to the ITunes Media folder on the old hard drive. How and why i set it up like this all that time ago is forgotten! Do i simply browse for a new location for the newly created duplicaye file?  My worry is that i will end up with every song listed twice in iTunes, or worse manage to wipe the content like a mate did!

Okay, solved.  Simple really, just moved the media folder location and there was no duplication. Phew!

  • Transferring my ITunes library from an old Windows 95 workstation to a new WIndows 7 workstation via my IPAD Air 2.  No success.  Is anybody able to help?

I'm trying to transfer my ITunes library to my new Windows 7 workstation through my IPAD Air 2.  Unable to get them copied.  Please suggest a fix.

You should be able to copy iTunes purchases from your iPad to your new computer's iTunes library via File > Devices > Transfer Purchases . For non-iTunes purchased content on the iPad you will need a third-party program on your computer to copy them from it, iTunes will only copy iTunes purchases from a device - there are some listed half-way down this page : Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device
If the two computers are connected to the same wifi network then you could use home sharing in iTunes to copy your library over.
Or you could use an external drive : How to move your iTunes library to a new computer - Apple Support
If you will be changed the computer that you sync the iPad to then you may also find this page of use (it was written for iPhones, but most of it applies to iPads as well) : Syncing to a "New" Computer or replacing a "crashed" Hard Drive

  • I cannot get my iTunes library from my old computer to my new one. The old computer is so messed up that I cannot even get google to open. I tried to copy to an external hard drive and the music was there until I went to upload to the new computer.

I cannot get my iTunes library/music from my old computer to my new one. The old computer is so messed up that I cannot even open a browser.I tried to copy to an external hard drive and the music was there until I went to upload to the new computer. I disconnected my old computer so I will have to reconnect it I am sure. thank you for any help. Last time I transferred I used a product I purchased. That was a long time ago.

First of all make sure that you've definitely backed up the movies to your external hard disc.
In iMovie click on any event you don't want, go to the file menu and select 'move event to trash'. Then do the same for any unwanted projects - 'move project to trash'. Quit out of iMovie and empty the trash.
    Hope that helps!

  • Problem transferring my iTunes library from my old laptop to new one

I got a new iPad for Xmas to replace an old laptop not realising I would still have to have a laptop or PC for my main iTunes library. I have got round ths by creating my own area on my partner's laptop & have installed my iTunes library on there. However, it has only installed my purchased music & not my wider collection such as all my CD's that I burned then got rid of to go digital. I have my complete library on my iPad & iPhone but need it on my laptop too in case I lose or break a device & need to install my iTunes library to a new device.
I have followed the support detailing how to move your iTunes to a new computer but am not getting very far. I don't have an iPod to use as an external hard drive. I read that you can drag your iTunes library to a CD or DVD but my library is 16GB & I don't have any disc big enough!
Does anyone have an idea of a simple way I can do this? Is it not possible to do it directly from my iPad or iPhone seeing as my complete library is on both of these devices?

So you no longer have access to the source files? (the cd's or the old laptop).
I do not know of a way to move music from device to computer.

  • Transferring complete iTunes library from old computer to new one?

My old computer isn't connecting to the internet. I can't enable home sharing since the old computer won't connect to the Internet, and I can't transfer using an external hard drive since the old computer needs software downloaded to connect to it. Is there another way of transferring my entire itunes library from my old computer to the new one  That doesn't need for the old computer to be connected to the Internet?

I've tried backing up the iPod to my new computer, but it doesn't save anything. The only thing that has worked is backing up what was on my phone. I now try to back up the phone to the new computer and it'll tell me there are purchases on my phone that need to be transferred, so I click for them to be transferred. The computer does it's thing and if I click for it to back up again right away, it tells me the same thing even though there are no purchases. I can turn on the home sharing on the new computer, but when I go do it on the old one it says 'Home Sharing could not be activated because of an error occurred (-3150)'

  • I have transferred my iTunes library from a PC to a Mac. Many of the albums will not run (not authorized) The system asks for old email account and passwords I used years ago. I have no idea what they are. How do I get around this?

Having transferred my iTunes library from my old PC to my new Mac. Many of the albums will not play because they are not authorized. Authorization lists very old email addresses of which I do not have the passwords or, in fact, access to the email websites. Can anyone whelp me with a way to get around this?

Yes, I believe I did with no success playing some of my "old albums." The remaing albums worked just fine.
I think I found a workaround by signing in to the old website using "forgot" password and changed it to a new one. Then I signed in using my Apple ID and Passwird. This seems to have worked.

  • HT4527 I have successfully transferred my iTunes folder from an old pc to my new one.  How do I now make this new computer the main synchronising computer for my iPad.  Thank you.

I have successfully transferred my iTunes from my old computer to a new one just brought.  However when I tried to synchronise my iPad to new computer I had a message that said there was an upgrade available which I said I would like to proceed with.  However I then had a message that said I would lose all my apps etc if I did this and that I should use the old computer to do all synching.  How do I make the new computer my main computer for synching.  Grateful for any help.   Sez.

If you migrate your library properly you don't get the wipe & reload problem. If possible revisit your migration, or use the link at the end to associate your device with the new library.
These are two possible approaches that will normally work to move an existing library to a new computer.
    Method 1
Backup the library with this User Tip.
Deauthorize the old computer if you no longer want to access protected content on it.
Restore the backup to your new computer using the same tool used to back it up.
Keep your backup up-to-date in future.
    Method 2
Connect the two computers to the same network. Share your <User's Music> folder from the old computer and copy the entire iTunes library folder into the <User's Music> folder on the new one. Again, deauthorize the old computer if no longer required.
Both methods should give the new computer a working clone of the library that was on the old one. As far as iTunes is concerned this is still the "home" library for your devices so you shouldn't have any issues with iTunes wanting to erase and reload.
I'd recommend method 1 since it establishes an ongoing backup for your library.
Note if you have iOS devices and haven't moved your contacts and calendar items across then you should create one dummy entry of each in your new profile and iTunes should  merge the existing data from the device.
If your media folder has been split out from the main iTunes folder you may need to do some preparatory work to make it easier to move. See make a split library portable.
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library or a backup then then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device for advice on how to set up your devices with a new library with the maximum preservation of data.

I am a new iPad user and have transferred my iTunes library from my laptop. How do I sync my iPod touch with my ipad

You don't.  You synch your iPod to your computer.  There's no way to synch from iPad to iPod.  You can tranfer the same playlists to your iPod from the computer.

I'm transferring my iTunes library from a PC to my new iMac via home sharing.  I've followed all of the steps to "import" my library but the "import" button is greyed out.  Any suggestions?

There is no need to import anything or use Home Sharing.
Copy the ENTIRE iTunes folder from the old computer to the new computer, everything will be exactly as it was.

i tried transferring my iphoto library from my old macbook onto my new macbook pro (via external hard drive), but when i open the new iphoto, it seems to have transferred ALL images ever used on my old macbook. so i tried to just delete all those images so i could try a different approach to transferring, but the new iphoto won't let me do anything and every time i try to delete anything it crashes (since the image amount is so high).  please help!!
MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2), iphoto '11, version 9.4.2

To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network,Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
    Then launch iPhoto. That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.

  • I have transferred my iTunes library from windows 7 pc to new windows 8 pc. Music was in alphabetical order by surname but new pc has some by surname some by first name and some not in alphabetical order. How can I get sorted?

Question  Hi - I've transferred my iTunes library from windows 7 pc to one with windows 8. My library was in alphabetical order by surname but after transfer is now some by surname, some by first name, and some not in alphabetical order. How do I sort this out and also make sure that new downloads list by surname alphabetically?

Sorting in iTunes is often controlled by selecting different column headings. The sort order for any given column may be further modified by a sort value, e.g. Sort Artist affects the sort order of Artist. If you transferred the library properly all of the metadata should have remained intract and you simply need to select the a column that sorts as you want. If you had to import the library then there is the potential for tagging effects that could mean metadata entered previously didn't import with the media. Note that iTunes has no mechanism for automatically deciding which values are in <Forename> <Surname> order and could therefore be sorted as <Surname> <Forename>. The only automatic process drops leading articles (a/an/the) so that "The Doors" sort under D as "Doors".

  • I am trying to transfer my itunes library from my old Mac to my new Mac; however, all that transfers is the music I downloaded from itunes.  It does not transfer the music I downloaded from my cd's.

How do I transfer my itunes library from my old Mac to my new Mac?  When I try all that transfers is what I downloaded from Itunes.  It does not transfer the music I downloaded from my cd's/.

iTunes: How to move [or copy] your music [library] to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527 - a somewhat bewildering and not always easily understandable set of options.
Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Open iTunes and immediately hold down the Option (alt) key (shift on Windows), then guide it to the iTunes Library.itl file in the moved iTunes folder.
For the record there's this reference for iTunes 11 but it really doesn't strike me as having the specifics you need. iTunes 11 for Mac: Move your library to another computer - http://support.apple.com/kb/PH12168

2011 Transferring your iTunes library - http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/articles/comments/moving-your-itunes-library-to -a-new-hard-drive/  - An article with good background information, particularly if you are not sure your media files are all grouped for quick  solution above. Unfortunately it uses the single term "transferring library" for two very different moves; relocating just your media (not recommended unless you really need this configuration) and relocating media+database (really your whole "library").  Make sure you understand the difference before electing to move only media.
If you put it in the default location of Macintosh HD > Users > *User Name* > Music  then you don't even need to start with the option key held down, iTunes will automatically look for it there.  (Make sure there isn't anything already in the iTunes folder there that you want to keep since you will be replacing it with the one you are moving.)
