Is there a Start Menu function in OSX?

is there a way to control what starts in osx when i start my computer?
for instance i am using a great tool called snagit which someone recommended on the list and i would like it to always be working when my computer is on. is my only option to start it and leave it on and start it again when i shutdown and restart my computer?
TIA for any related suggestions on other things to learn as well.

• How can I start Windows XP Mode when there is no startup link in the Start Menu?

I have installed and had to uninstall and reinstall Windows XP Mode numerous times on my Dell desktop running Windows 7 Professional and now I cannot start it because there is no startup link in the Program Files folder. When i try to reinstal XP Mode
it tells me it's already installed, but I can't find the startup link.

Hi,
Could you find XP mode in Start Menu?
How about using Windows Search feature to search Windows XP Mode?

• I can't use the search function in both the Start Menu and Windows Explorer.

This problem occurred yesterday when I uninstalled a program on my computer. Once the program was uninstalled, everything was fine until I tried to search for a file in my start menu search bar. When I attempt to search for something, nothing comes up. Not
even a single document or piece of text. Nothing.
In other posts I've seen addressing the same issue that I'm having, people try to search something and a selection of files come up, like "Programs", "Documents", etc., except for me, it's all blank.
In other threads people have suggested to delete certain subdirectories in regedit, but when I go into regedit, and navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer
folder, there is no FolderTypes folder for me to delete. It's simply not there.
I've pretty much tried every possible resolution under the sun, apart from completely re-installing Windows 7. Please help me fix this issue, because at this point I'm
lost.

Yes, sometimes, we can solve this issue by editing the registry entry you mentioned above, I have a suggestion, do you have a similar system or PC which is working fine? You can export this registry entry from that PC (which i sworking fine), then
import it to your problematic PC, please remember that incorrect change in registry will cause serious damage, so backup the registry first before editing.
After finishing editing the registry, restart PC. If doesn't work, open control panel\Indexing Options\Advanced, rebuild the index.

• FF updated something so that history takes up whole bottom half of screen; I cannot surf, or even see start menu. I cannot change menu items so that I am asked before something is downloaded and uopdated automatically. These were NOT my settings!

My browser was very slow, so I cleared cookies and cache. When FF (4.0) restarted, it said it had installed colourful tabs (which I ALREADY HAD). I opened FF and typed in mmy first TE on my list ( I surf traffic exchanges). But I cannot do so on FF anymore. Only half my computer screen is from the TE or web page, and the bottom HALF of the screen is for History, etc. I cannot even see or access the Start menu or my open tabs at the bottom of the screen, unless I use Control and Escape.
I got the url from FF 4.0 , uninstalled the old version and reinstalled it. Same thing. I uninstalled it again, straight from my control panel (Windows Vista Home Premium), cleared cookies and cache again, fixed registry problems again, and restarted my computer. STILL same thing!
I tried to adjust settings, but it will not let me change what I need to. I cannot unclick that updates will be downloaded and installed automatically, and check that I want to be asked each time. I do not know if I can even SEE what was updated, to give you an idea if that could have caused this very nasty problem. Nasty, because until it is fixed, I will not be using FF.

After following all the instructions given, I poked around safe websites as suggested. I am not sure why this step was needed, as websites functioned rather normally before I came here but I did it anyways and found that the websites still work the same as they did. I can still do everything I used to be able to do. I see no change in the function of the websites.
However, I still cannot resize, close, or move the browser window. I don't know if Netflix is a safe site or not (too many conflicting opinions on that one from the masses) so I don't know if the issue with the vanishing buttons is still there, but all the issues I had with the browser window itself is still there.
Even in safe mode the browsers three window control buttons on the top right refuse to let me use them and the window itself will refuse to be moved around.

• Windows 8.1 need help with Windows Updates and Start menu Or fix my old Windows Xp system

My beloved windows Xp has gave up after many years of working well. It stopped working a few days ago after a lightening strike.
I got this Windows 8.1 computer a few month ago but it seems to have a problem. I stopped using it after could not get start menu to work and when back to my Windows XP system.
First problem is the start menu is not there. I tried installing something and it says it will take control or something and screen goes black. I clicked canceled quickly in order not to get a virus.
Where is the start menu?
Second problem, Windows updates does not want to update because it needs Windows 8.1 update. This computer is already Windows 8.1. There I canceled it since it was mostly a virus. Now updates are not working.
If those can not be fixed, how can i fix my Windows Xp to get it back. It does not turn on, I press button and nothing happens. Is this something easy to fix?

Another user discovers that Windows 8.1 is not at all of what it should be.
There is no Start Menu in Windows 8 or 8.1. However, you can restore your desktop start menu with a very good freeware application:
Classic Shell
Windows Update comes with Windows 8.1. There is nothing special you have to do.
It kind of sounds like you've been a bit too quick to download and run whatever you find on the Internet. You should always research any software you're considering downloading/installing ahead of time. Google it. See what others say
about it. Ask on forums. In order to use Windows effectively and safely you need to expand your knowledge and become a more sophisticated user.
If you think your new system has become infected, you might want to consider Refreshing or Resetting it to a clean state, or at least visiting one of the anti-malware forums and getting some advice on cleaning it up. But beware, a lot
of "blind leading the blind" happens on forums. Always try to read between the lines, and question what people say.
You could consider leaving XP behind. Its time has come and gone, and pretty much any newer version of Windows can actually give you better service than XP - once you get it tuned up.
It's possible to make Windows 8.1 more functional than XP and about as functional as Windows 7, but it takes a fair bit of effort in reconfiguration and installation of some well-known 3rd party applications that are good (which, unfortunately, most
on the internet are not).
Good luck to you.

• Windows 10 Start menu cannot be resized

The start menu can no longer be resized and it only looks weird when removing/uninstalling all the tiles. This was optional in the earlier developer preview and should remain optional. This may or may not be the wrong channel to submit this feedback but
I accidentally uninstalled the Windows Feedback app and could not revert.
Windows 10 will not be any better until the start menu is back to the same function as < Win8. Why not just do a modern implementation of the start menu without rebuilding its concept?

I don't think this forum will allow anyone posting method(s) of reverting "expandable" Start Menu of build 9926 back to "resizable" Start Menu of build 9879.
Google for it. It's out there.

• Is there a "start" button

How do I browse installed software? Do Macs have a "start" button similar to Windows or do I just go to "applications" in my hard drive?

Yeah, but the start button brings up a menu that can keep expanding, and you can manuver through all the programs and subcategories easily by just moving the mouse around, no clicking needed until you get where you want to go (what program you want to run). Once you do that, then the Start menu goes back into hiding so you don't have to close or minimize the folder to get it to not be shown anymore. Also, shortcut icons on the desktop are much more used which act just like the dock does really, and there are also the options for the Quick Launch of programs, program icons in the system tray (where the clock is) where you can select which ones to "hide" all the time or just when inactive... etc.
There are also many programs that let you customize and configure the start menu, quick launch and system tray areas to the way you want them, as well as the right click button menu and so forth. There are also many different "dock" applications available.
And while you can say that Microsoft or the other 3rd Party companies stole those ideas from OSX (which may be true), it doesn't change the fact that Windows has tons of different options available, many with freeware even...
Personally, I really do like OSX alot, as the only thing I have always disliked and still do, is the fact that the top menu bar changes with each program and you have to go into the recent applications list to go back to another program window that is still open to access it (if you are using Full Screen sized program windows).
This above, compared to windows with the tabs for each open application (if not in the system tray as an icon), where you can easily just click on the tab you want and it takes over the current focus, or you can have all be "hidden" by being minimized and just shown by the tab in the bottom bar.
Windows also actually closes the program when you hit the "close window" button on it, instead of making it look gone but still having it's processes running (which is how the windows Mobile OS for PDAs is, and there are a million different freeware applications that have been created to use to help correct this problem by actually taking over the process and letting you always "close" with the x or letting it ask you etc. This shows that there are many others out there like me, that like to permanently close an application if we know we will not be using it again for quite a while, and do it easily.
There may be many that like OSX the way it is now, which is fine too, to each their own... But, I do like the option of being able to choose which style I would like to use (which windows does at least by having more 3rd party applications expand the OS experience) and I know I would just like to see more options available for OSX in the future.

• Pin folder contents to Start Menu

Hello,
I know how to pin a single item to the start menu. I am using the following for a single item:
Function fPinToStart
Set objShell = CreateObject("Shell.Application")
Set objFolder = objShell.NameSpace(strPinFrom)
Set objFolderItem = objFolder.ParseName("google.lnk")
wscript.echo objFolderItem.Name
For Each verb In objFolderItem.Verbs()
wscript.echo verb.name
If verb.Name = "Pin to Start Men&u" Then
verb.DoIt()
End If
Next
End Function
What I need to do though is take the contents of a folder and pin the contents to the start menu. The reason for this is we have 5 or 6 websites that need to easily be accessed on locked down systems. In order to make them easy to access we want to pin to
the start menu. I know I can create 5 or 6 functions but it seems like I should be able to take the contents of a folder and somehow parse that data so that it can run each item separately. I am using the below to read the contents of a folder. Is there a
way I can feed it into the above function so that each objFile can be looped through the For Each?
Function fPinToStartFolder
Set objShell = CreateObject("Shell.Application")
Set objFolder = objFSO.GetFolder(strPinFrom)
Set colFiles = objFolder.Files
For Each objFile in colFiles
wscript.echo objFile.Name
Next
End Function
The way I look at it is objShell.NameSpace(strPinFrom) and objFolder.ParseName("google.lnk") need to be dynamic so that fPinToStartFolder can feed the data into fPinToStart one file at a time. Ofcourse the names of the functions are messy. They will
change as I get a solution.

Thanks Bill. That got me to a solution for unpinning. Just need to make some changes to my pinning script and I am done. Here is the unpin. Modify it the way you need it for pinning
Function fGetUserPinnedStartMenu
fGetUserPinnedStartMenu = "C:\Users\" & strUserName & "\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\StartMenu"
End Function
Function fGetFolderContents(objAppData)
wscript.echo "Pinned Icons Location: " & objAppData
Set objFolder = objFSO.GetFolder(objAppData)
Set colFiles = objFolder.Files
For Each objFile In colFiles
wscript.echo objFile.Name
fUnpinFromStart objFile.Name,objAppData
Next
End Function
Function fUnpinFromStart(objFile,objAppData)
wscript.echo "Unpinning " & objFile
Set objShell = CreateObject("Shell.Application")
Set objFolderUnpin = objShell.Namespace(objAppData)
Set objFolderItem = objFolderUnpin.ParseName(objFile)
For Each verb In objFolderItem.Verbs()
If verb.Name = "Unpin from Start Men&u" Then
verb.DoIt()
End If
Next
End Function
SET objNetwork = CreateObject("WScript.Network")
SET objFSO = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject")
SET WshShell = CreateObject("wscript.Shell")
strUserName = objNetwork.UserName
objAppData = fGetUserPinnedStartMenu
fGetFolderContents objAppData

• Jrootmenu - An Linux root/start menu

What does it look like?
So what is it?
I'm not entirely sure what the "start" menu is called, be it in Windows, or contextually in OpenBox, JWM, SithWM, etc. but essentially, it's a launcher in a familiar menu form. For an equivalent, take a look at mygtkmenu.
Why did I create it?
I settled on DWM as my window manager. While I like dmenu, I prefer a graphical launcher. The closest I could find was mygtkmenu, but the configuration file wasn't in XML, and certain shell commands have to be escaped rather peculiarly. Dissatisfied, I tinkered until this was made.
What are its goals?
Menu generation from an xml sheet
Font size can be altered
Expanders (the tiny arrows that appear before submenus) can be changed
Should hide/unhide itself due to a keybinding
Color scheme can be changed
Why Java, not C?
I don't know C. I'm familiar with Java.
What are the dependencies?
The java runtime environment.
What's the set up?
Download jrootmenu.tar.bz2 (116.56 KB), and extract the contents. The help.html file is located in jrootmenu/menu/root/docs/ and explains pretty much everything, or it should anyhow.
Are you going to provide the source?
The source is included, though it is not heavily commented. The license provides for the modification of the source code but not for (re)distribution of changes or even the original code, therefore, no forking. The source code for the custom look and feel is not provided. However, removing it in no way affects the functionality of JRootMenu.
Can you make a PKGBUILD?
I've read through the PKGBUILD pages on the wiki, and I can't surmise where to even begin. Those pages seem geared for people who are Linux/Arch devs as opposed to just a guy who cobbled together some code to do what he wanted.
Conclusion
I'm satisfied with how it works, functionally-speaking. I made this for myself, and I'm sharing it with the intent that there may be someone out there who was seeking something similar. Or perhaps, it will prompt a competent someone to take this idea and make it in C. If you have suggestions for improving it, feel free to add them to the thread, particularly if they involve some way of decreasing CPU/RAM usage.

Not at all chickenPie4tea, thanks for the interest.
I also wanted to take the opportunity to expound on the newest feature I've implemented. I had an issue while testing alternate themes wherein I meant to restart JRootMenu but instead inadvertently selected the option to restart my system. So as to avoid the same mistake twice, I figured the user should be prompted before executing a command if it happens to be a particularly important one (logout/restart/shutdown for instance). The way this is accomplished from the configuration file is by adding a caption="" attribute to the <Shell> element. Thus, when a user clicks that particular item in the menu, a dialog will appear with the user-defined message asking if he wishes to proceed with the action or decline it. Here's an example from the configuration file:
<Shell caption="Shut down computer?">sudo systemctl poweroff</Shell>

• Adobe Bridge CC (64 bit) shows in my Start menu but will not open.

Adobe Bridge CC (64 bit) showed installed on my Start menu and on the apps CC section.
I cannot open Bridge from either the Start Menu or the File Menu on CC PS CS6.

I've just installed Firefox on my laptop and keep getting the message, "Windows cannot find 'c:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again." I get this message whenever I either try to open it from the Start menu or from the desktop icon. I've never gotten it to work and even uninstalled it and then redownloaded it and still cannot get it to open. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!

Are you installing from the official site? http://www.mozilla.com/firefox
If you use Windows Explorer (My Computer) to check that path, is the Mozilla Firefox folder there? That is the normal installation location, but I think it's worth checking.
If the folder isn't there or firefox.exe is not in it, I wonder whether some other software might be interfering. You might want to run some supplemental security scans. These two tools are highly regarded:

• Is there any BAPI or function module to delete entries from a table (VBAK)

Hi Everybody,
this is my first thread in SDN...
my problem follows...
A report is be created that selects all sales orders created by e-Sales that are more than 20 minutes old and still have a delivery block:
tables:
VBAK sales document: header data
selection fields:
VBAK-LIFSK ≠ <BLANK>
VBAK-ERNAM = userID used by e-Sales / IVE
(EP-BATCH / EAI-BATCH)
VBAK-ERDAT      <=     Current system Date
VBAK-ERZET     <=     Current system Time - 20 minutes
These orders should be deleted from SAP system.
This report should be scheduled to run regularly every 10 minutes.
my doubt : is ther any BAPI or Function module to delete entries from a standard table...if no what is the way to delete the enteries from a std table...
best replies will be rewarded....
regards
Reddy

Hi Vasanth ,
thanks for your reply.
i tried in the same manner what u mentioned.
but how to pass only one parameter to the functionmodule..
here in this case we have to pass only update flag as 'D'..
i did the same it giving dump..
An exception occurred that is explained in detail below.
The exception, which is assigned to class 'CX_SY_DYN_CALL_ILLEGAL_TYPE', was
not caught and
therefore caused a runtime error.
The reason for the exception is:
The call to the function module "BAPI_SALESORDER_CHANGE" is incorrect:
In the function module interface, you can specify only
fields of a specific type and length under "ORDER_HEADER_INX".
Although the currently specified field
"INT_ORDER_HEADER_INX" is the correct type, its length is incorrect.

• Start Menu items/shotcuts and Start Menu search ability on multiple workstations

2/13/2014 our IT department began to receive complaints of missing programs. After investigation of a few users we were able to determine that the programs existed but all shortcuts and items from the start menu had been completely removed. In addition the
searching feature of the start menu was not functional. This happened to about 90% of our environment and the catalyst seemed to be Windows updates or at least occurred after the auto reboot initiated by Windows Updates. The only items visible in start
menu were items added after the fact, internet explorer, magnifier, command prompt, and notepad. All other items, folders, and the ability to search installed programs or folders were completely removed. However all programs are present in the program files
folders. THe start menu folder in program data was empty except for the aforementioned items. Additionally properties of start menu had all necessary checks in boxes such as search program files and folders etc. Also show hidden items and folders is enabled
for many users so the items were not hidden but gone. And the biggest kicker of all was after a full domain investigation into the issues we found that the majority of our windows server platforms, primarily 2008, were also affected and system restore is unavailable.
This conflicts with our idea that Windows Updates caused this since our servers get their updates on a manual initiated basis by their admins which we have not performed as of yet for this month. This caused me to begin looking at SCCM SCEP as all systems
have System Center Endpoint Protection and received definition updates. Also accessing different user profiles or even a new profile did not make a difference, issue still present.
Due to the enormous inconvenience we sent out a company wide email asking users to perform system restores to get us in a stable state. A system restore to the day before Windows updates (second Wednesday of every month configured by SCCM SCUP) restored
the start menu items.
On a multitude of machines IT performed troubleshooting and system restores recording the changes removed and added. We then, on a healthy machine, started to apply the windows updates and SCEP (antivirus) definitions 1 by 1 with out success of replicating
the issue. Next we performed a system wide antivirus full scan and did not find any viruses. This is obviously not a system criticle issue bringing us down but is a huge concern for us in IT as it happened company wide and caused a large flux of tickets and
some down time for non-technical users. We most definitely want to know the cause and after several days of investigation and troubleshooting Im turning to the Microsoft community for help.
I know I categorized this as a Windows 7 issue and its affecting windows server 2008, 2003, and 7, but I did not see a forum for all windows platforms. Since the majority of affected users are Windows 7 I opened it here.
So to summarize in a bulleted format:
Issue: Wide spread issue affecting around 60-70 users and servers, all profiles, were all start menu items save one or two system defaults were removed. Additionally the searching feature for the start menu looks to be broken as programs
exist in program files and are unsearchable from start menu. IT was also affected and I remain affected until I find the cause.
Investigation and Troubleshooting:
Start menu properties: nothing has changed and search options are enabled.
Missing items are not hidden, hiding and unhiding does nothing and folder options show hidden files is checked.
Program data start menu location is indeed empty as well as user app data start menu location
No group policy's are in place altering start menu items and no group policy changes were made as of recent
No SCCM packages pushed company wide in last month or pushed individually
Windows Updates occurred on windows 7 machines only before the issue occurred and computers restarted and the issue surfaced
System Center Endpoint Protection Antivirus updates and definitions deployed just before the occurrence with windows updates. SCEP def updates happen on all windows boxes to include servers
Paint.exe was completely missing from system32 folder for some users machines to include my own
System restore to that morning before restarts or previous day fixes the issue for windows 7 users
No windows updates were initiated on any servers
Servers were also affected with windows 7 machines
About half the users affected had corrupt Microsoft Office 2013 Pro Plus Click to Run installations and for some the system restore did not fix this and we had to re-install office for around 10 users
SCEP antivirus did not catch any viruses that could cause this, I performed MBAM scans on a handful of machines and didn't find anything either.
Re-creating start menu shortcuts works
Happened to two of our companies locations NH and MA, all part of the same domain but different LANS of course. Companies are interconnected by MPLS connection.
I combed through SCCM to see if anything deployed and found nothing. Currently I have SCUP updates and SCEP updates disabled. I will post a list of Windows Updates that occurred when the issue occurred as well as the SCEP updates. I have read all the threads
about this types of issues and tried all steps without success. Googling the issue also did not rear results.

Hi,
I would like to suggest you try these steps to figure out what could be causing this problem.
1. Run Troubleshooter
Open the Search and Indexing troubleshooter
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Open-the-Search-and-Indexing-troubleshooter
2. Create a new library and include fewer folders for test purpose. Now search for a file from that folder. See if it works.
Create a new library
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Create-a-new-library
3. Try to rebuild search indexing. Refer the steps from the following article.
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Change-advanced-indexing-options
Also you may use the System File Checker tool (SFC.exe) to check the issue. The sfc /scannow command scans all protected system files and replaces incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions.
How to use the System File Checker tool to troubleshoot missing or corrupted system files on Windows Vista or on Windows 7

In addition, you may refer to the following Microsoft TechNet article for the Windows Search related Group Policies.
Group Policy for Windows Search

Hope it helps.
