Is there a technical explanation for why iTunes runs so slow?

I seem to experience a lack of performance using iTunes on a PC. It doesn't seem to matter which PC as I have tried many over the years. But the problems persist. Slow program loading, syncing problems, (both USB and wi-fi), iTunes Match problems, program freezes and unresponsiveness, changing from "Install" to "Will Install" in app lists. It really detracts from the over all experience with my iPhone and iPad. I have talked to people with Macs and they never seem to have these problems. I am curious as to why the difficulty in running iTunes on the PC platform. I have never really found a resource that directly addresses the matter and am looking for suggestions other than faster computers or reinstalling, which I have done many times.

It would help if you could be more specific about the problems you're experiencing.  I run iTunes on a variety of Windows systems: a 10-year desktop running WinXP SP3 / 32 bit, a desktop running Win7 / 32 bit, two laptops running Win7 / 64 bit and a netbook running Win8.1 / 64 bit. The only performance issues I see are on the older machines, where some library operations can be a little slow but these can be explained by the size of my library (approx. 600 Gb).  There are, however, all sorts of combinations of hardware and operating system that can affect application performance - iTunes is something of a memory-hog so can contribute to performance issues if running at the same time as other memory, processor, or disc intensive applications.  One example I had in the past was the combination of iTunes with a resource-hungry anti-virus utility (solved by changing the latter and making sure that scheduled scans happen at times when I'm highly unlikely to be running iTunes).

Just to add this : iWeb -- the app itself -- is still supported, updated only months ago and as part of the ilife '11 DVDs still widely spread even though it is not sold on the AppStore it is official part of iLife. It runs in Lion and there is zero issues with the app. So a training makes sense, doesn't it ?.

My Iphone 4S cannot play music without headphone. Everything else works, such as alarm, siri, notifications, etc..., except music out loud. I tried everything, but there is no explanation on why it does this. If siri and alarm work fine, it cant be a internal sound system problem, and it is just for music without headphones plugged in or any other sound system.

    Hi shanny202.
Really strange problem you have there. I have a few questions though.
Please try again and try to make the phone as a new without restoringen with you iCloud-data or backup-data from iTunes. Maybe it is something wrong with the data (strange).
Anyway, i think you should call Apple Support or visit an Apple Store, don't forgot to make a Genius Bar reservation.

iPhones are duty free and even with a $50 shipping fee it would only come to £185.75 including VAT at the current exchange rate.

How much a month is the standard 24month contract with AT&T or one of the other American providers that makes the handset cost $199?
Here's the cheapest plans available from the big three:
The plans start there and can run up to $230/mo (for AT&T).

  • Itunes running too slow to use

I recently uploaded a lot of content into my itunes and moved it to an external hard drive. All of a sudden Itunes runs so slow it periodically freezes as I scroll down through my library. I uploaded about 60,000 songs to bring the total to about 67,000 and change. Do you think its the number of songs coupled with the fact that this is an old computer I am using (even though its a brand new external drive) that is causing the problem or could it be something else?

Apple Support Communities contributor etresoft wrote a very useful app to quickly gather certain system information that may help point to a cause of this problem. Go to his website, download and run EtreCheck:
    http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck
Etrecheck will be in your Downloads folder. Open it from there. You may see the following dialog box:
Click Open - etresoft contributes to this forum frequently and can be considered a trustworthy developer.
It will take a moment to run as it collects its data.
Copy and paste its output in a reply.
Do not be concerned about anything that says "Problem" or "failed".
EtreCheck was designed to remove any personal information (such as your computer's name and serial numbers) but if you see anything that looks like an email address or any other personal information that should not be divulged to others, please delete or obscure that information when you post the reply.
When you are finished with EtreCheck, quit the program. It occupies very little space, and you can keep it or drag it to the Trash as you wish.

  • ITunes Running Very Slow and other errors

    iMac, OSX 10.6.7, 2.66 GHZ, Intel Core 2Duo, 4GB Ram 1067 MHZ DDR3
    iTunes 10.2.2
Media is on 1TB USB attached WD Drive / Mac OS Extended.  Music Folder is 83GB
When I launch iTunes it tries to update Genius and gets the following error:
"We could not complete your iTunes store request. An unknown error occured (4002).  There was an error in the iTunes store.  Please try again later."
While viewing my music list in the iTunes browser if I select a star rating for a song, the spinning beach ball may spin for as long as a minute or longer.
If I launch iTunes and do nothing but play music, it "seems" to do ok.  If I do something like change a rating that then invokes the spinning ball, from
there on out everything is slow.  A change in songs can take a minute or more.
I was just able to download / purchase an album from iTunes store.  It was slow and the spinning ball was active for the entire download.  I was able to
use other applications but could not click anything in iTunes.
After the download I am able to switch between any and all songs in my library without any noticible lag.
I updated the rating on one of the new songs just purchased and it took a full 3 minutes for the spinning ball to stop.
    Any help is appreciated.

  • Microsoft Excel(for Mac) is running extremely slow

I am using Microsoft Excel(for Mac) and it is running extremely slow.  I have a 3 different functions running and about 10,000 lines of data, but to delete 1 line of data or add a column takes about half an hour.  I tried rebooting my computer and that didn't really help too much.  Is there anything else I can do?  I have a 13-inch Mid 2012 MacBook Pro

  • Why Friefox runs supper slow.

See every time like 2 days it runs fine. Right now its running supper slow again again Not liking it on theses websites running supper slow. On theses website's on www.yahoo.com and www.Facebook.com and www.tag.com it sucks Please fix to make it run faster not slow please ty. GETTING tired of it.

Click the Firefox button, go to Add-ons, then Plugins.
In there, disable "'''My Web Search'''". This is an adware which probably came bundled with a 'free' app you installed at some time or another. It runs silently in the background searching for ads to feed you.
In addition, update your Flash installation. The version you have at the moment exposes your system to exploits. See http://www.adobe.com/support/security/bulletins/apsb11-12.html

  • ITunes running super slow

Whenever I open iTunes now, my system starts running super slow. All other applications are gasping for air. iTunes itself runs slow. If I click on a track name to change it, it can take 10 seconds before it responds. Whenever I close iTunes, it takes around 20-30 seconds to save the Library information.
I now only use iTunes for syncing my iPod unfortunately, as it's not practical to use if I'm actually doing anything else on my computer.
Any ideas what's going on? All of my tracks are on my external hard drive with plenty of free space left. This all seemed to happen sometime during the last 3-5 iTunes updates, as it was fine before that.
    Pentium 4 3.0GHz, 1GB RAM   Windows XP

    Close your iTunes,
    Go to command Prompt -
(Win 7/Vista) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES, right mouse click "Command Prompt", choose "Run as Administrator".
    (Win XP SP2 & above) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES/Command Prompt
In the "Command Prompt" screen, type in
    netsh winsock reset
    Hit "ENTER" key
    Restart your computer.
If you do get a prompt after restart windows to remap LSP, just click NO.
Now launch your iTunes and see if it is working now.
If you are still having these type of problems after trying the winsock reset, refer to this article to identify which software in your system is inserting LSP:

  • ITunes runs unbearably slow

Running on a Dell laptop with Vista, everything about iTunes is incredibly slow - starting up, browsing the library, accessing the store, etc.
Videos are especially choppy. I've had to resort to loading them onto my iPod and using it to watch them. I tried disabling Quicktime DirectX, etc., but that didn't seem to help. Videos run fine in WMP.

If they play well in WMP then I would consider a software conflict, outdated drivers or malware. Make sure you are running the newest version of iTunes. Also how much hard drive space do you have left on your main drive after everything got reloaded? Also, which CPU do you have? What is the speed of the hard drive?
    You didn't say what Anti-virus software you run, but I would start by running a reputable online scan;
Housecall (through www.trendsecure.com - Security tab)
    Bitdefender - www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html
Panda Active Scan - www.pandasecurity.com/usa/ (They will charge to remove any malware found).
I've been running iTunes on Vista and have even been playing with it in Windows 7, and response has been good. Both on my desktop and laptop.

  • Why aperture running very slow?

I just installed additional ram and the other day aperture was running extremely slow. The only other application was iphoto.
How much CPU power does aperture require?
    thanks.

    sharon108 wrote:
After consolidating iPhoto pictures into Aperture Library - and having to rebuild library all photos are shown under "Other" in storage under About this Mac.  How do I get photos back into the Photo section.  I am sure this is why Aperture is running very slow.  Aperture library is on a 500 GB external USB hard drive.  Does anyone know how to get photos into the right spot in the storage.
Nothing in my experience would make me draw the same conclusion (that the reporting of your Aperture Library as "Other" is why Aperture is running slowly).  You report that your Library is on an external drive connected via USB.  Is this USB 2 or USB 3?
The consensus is to put your Library on your fastest (lowest latency and highest throughput) drive.  This is almost always your system drive.  If your Library does not fit on your system drive, you are advised to move some or all of your Images' Master from the Library to a second drive using "File→Relocate Masters".  If you want help with these set-ups, post back.

  • Is there any official explanation about why lumia ...

What is going on here is,  We see huge debate between Nokia fans and Noida haters about Lumia 920's weight.
People are expecting the official explanation about the ideas and reasons behind this design.
185g is quite heaiver than most of modern smart phone, why Nokia do that?

It is "Heavy" because of its bigger frame that is consisted of Polycarbonate, glass, and ceramic unibody which gives it a durable build. Because of this build, a case is not recommended due to its near indestructable design. What also adds to the weight is supposedly the wireless charging coils that gives it the extra Umpf.
Lets put "this phone is too heavy" into a more relatable perspective.
    In terms of weight:
    iPhone 4 is 5 ounces.
    Lumia 920 6.5 ounces.
Look at the popular iPhone 4 cases. Examples are the "Otterbox" and "Case-Mate Barely There Slim". The "Otterbox" is a solid 1.8 ounces, and the "Case-mate" case is 1.5 ounces. When one adds those numbers interchangeably with the 5 ounces of the iPhone 4, it can be said that the weight matches that of the Lumia 920 if not more.
But wait you didn't add the case weight to the Lumia 920?
-As stated above, it isn't recommended to have a case on it, unlike the iPhone series
I don't even use a case for my iPhone?
The vast majority of iPhone users do use iPhone cases. If you don't believe me, go out to the city and see for yourself. The ratio is quite obvious. And if you happen to not have a case on that iPhone, then I'll have no pity for you when it shatters at first impact.
Many iPhone users complain about the weight, but they forget that they've been decieved by the fact that they have been using a flagship phone for years that was atleast the same weight of the Lumia 920.

  • Is there a technical genius for ICloud?

Im just trying to receive a deleted file from 2 hours ago, as a result of choosing the wrong duplication!
Surely someone from ICloud can go through the old updates and retrieve a certain file???

As I told you earlier, unfortunately, if you deleted the file, you deleted it from iCloud as well - unless you backed up the document to your iCloud account. If you did, you can restore from the iCloud backup. If you didn't, you are out of luck.
We are other users just like you are, there are no Apple employees here that can help you. They do not participate on this site.
As I recall, you said in your other post that you have another older copy of this file. You would be much better off trying to update that file than you will be trying to recover something that is gone.

I can't beleive how long it takes to install iTunes. It is unbeleivable. I have been sitting here for over 2 hours in Starbucks. It is still going and going. Most video games only take an hour or so.
