Is there a trackpad gesture that causes sleep mode to turn on?

I have a new mac book pro with retina display (purchased in March) and recenlty while working the screen will go black. The machine appears to be in sleep mode, so I am wondering if I am accidentally using a gesture on the trackpad that could cause this?

This is not normal.

  • Power-button is not working properly anymore. It is causing sleep mode!

    Hey all!
    I have a MacBook Pro Retina 15 inch, which is one year old. Lately I am experiencing a strange problem.
    I cannot shut the mac down by pressing the power button. Usually the windon with the options should pop-up.
    Instead of this, it makes my mac to go immediately to sleep mode.
    I dont know what caused this and I dont know how to fix that.
    Does anyone of you have a clue?
    Thanks a lot!

    I'm experiencing the same curious problem, here(Macbook Pro 13", mid 2009).  This started after upgrading to, Mavericks.  One press of the power button always used to bring up the dialog box with the various options.  Now, just a press of the power button, and it's immediate sleep time.  Music that was playing in iTunes stops playing, so it's different from the screen sleeping.
    But, as dominic23 states, "Press and hold the power button for seconds until the dialog box appears", does seem to do the trick.  This is just a different behavior than in the past.

  • GT70 BSOD or Stuck after Windows puts it to sleep mode of turns off monitor

    Hi Everyone!
    i have an  issue (or 2) with my laptop.
    both happens when:
    1) whenever i put the laptop into sleep mode or either windows does so automatically (inactive period), - the laptop will go to sleep just fine.
    2) windows turns off monitor after a period of inactivity. (sleep mode due to inactivity was disabled in this case)
    in both the cases i mentions above, if i wake the computer within lets say 5 minutes, it'll turn on just fine.
    but after a certain period of time passes it wont.
    with the sleep mode, the computer will wake and will then produce a BSOD STOP error 0x4 and restart.
    with monitor turned off it'll simply wont turn on, not responding to neither keyboard, mouse or power button. - i have to do a hard reboot
    any ideas?
    anything i can check?
    note the laptop just came back from a warranty repair, so all parts have been tested and been found ok!
    system specs:
    MSI GT70-0ND
    CPU: Intel Core i7-3630QM 2.4GHz (Intel GPU HD 4000 included)
    Memory: 16GB DDR3
    Storage: 750GB HDD 7200rpm
                   128GB SSD (Patriot Pyro SE) - OS installed on this.
    GPU: 4GB NVIDIA Geforce GTX 675MX
    OS: Windows 7 64bit
    Thanks in Advance!!

    i dont think i have the same problem as in the other thread.
    my bios:
    my laptop doesnt restart when my screen is turned off and i try to wake it. it would simply wont wake up.
    and my BSOD happens only after i wake the laptop from sleep mode and only if it been in sleep mode for a while. meaning i if i wake it up within a few mins of going to sleep it'll boot justfine.

  • Is there a new gesture that does what command tab does?

    I used to be able to bring this up using my trackpad in Snow Leopard...is there a way to do this on lion?

    No, but you might want to look at a utility called Better Touch Tool which I believe is now available in the App Store as well as at your favorite download sites. It lets you define all kinds of gestures which includes, among other things, includes the App Switcher.

  • Is there a mutex error that caused the AB-BA lock?

    Hi,
    I have a multiple-threaded program based on BerkeleyDB 4.8.30, and transaction environment,
    it's coded by ANSI-C language, all threads are using the same DB_ENV variable.
    some times the program encountered some errors that looked like
    Thread A held mutex M1 and was waiting for mutex M2,
    Thread B held mutex M2 and was waiting for mutex M1.
    so these 2 threads were waiting for each other infinitely.
    some back trace info:

    Regarding some code inspection about these functions: __memp_mf_discard, __memp_mf_sync and __memp_nameop
    seemed Thread A held the region lock related to ((REGINFO *) 0x9935218) and trying to acquire to lock related to ((DB_MPOOL_HASH *) 0xb5500510)
    while thread B held the lock related to ((DB_MPOOL_HASH *) 0xb5500510), and trying to acquire to region lock related to ((REGINFO *) 0x9935218)
    Have you encountered the similar issues?

    Thanks Mike, I'm waiting for the newer version of these docs.
    On the other hand, do you prefer the modifications in the source code file: db-4.8.30 (or latest BDB version)/mp/mp_method.c, procedure __memp_nameop:
    nearby the label 'err:' the original implement is as follow:
        /* Delete the memory we no longer need. */
    err:    if (p != NULL) {
            MPOOL_REGION_LOCK(env, &dbmp->reginfo[0]);
            __memp_free(&dbmp->reginfo[0], p);
            MPOOL_REGION_UNLOCK(env, &dbmp->reginfo[0]);
        /* If we have buckets locked, unlock them when done moving files. */
        if (locked == 1) {
            MUTEX_UNLOCK(env, hp->mtx_hash);
            if (nhp != NULL && nhp != hp)
                MUTEX_UNLOCK(env, nhp->mtx_hash);
    and the code modifications is below:
    err:
        /* If we have buckets locked, unlock them when done moving files. */
        if (locked == 1) {
            MUTEX_UNLOCK(env, hp->mtx_hash); //Unlock here!
            if (nhp != NULL && nhp != hp)
                MUTEX_UNLOCK(env, nhp->mtx_hash);
        if (p != NULL) {
            MPOOL_REGION_LOCK(env, &dbmp->reginfo[0]);
            __memp_free(&dbmp->reginfo[0], p);
            MPOOL_REGION_UNLOCK(env, &dbmp->reginfo[0]);
    as you saw, the modification unlocked the mutex 'hp->mtx_hash' first, then was trying to lock the mutex &dbmp->reginfo[0],
    and seems it has been working on my systems for close to a year.
    How about this modification?
    Thanks,
    Harper

  • Caffeine cause Sleep Mode Malfunction in lion !!!

    Incedent was happen when download and installed "Caffeine" from App store. The lion won't go to sleep any more. I had tried uninstall the "Caffeine" but the lion still wouldn't go to sleep. The only way i can make it sleep is to "Schedule" time for the lion go sleep then it sleep. Else it only turn off monitor only.
    Please remind the developer to update their software to support lion. Anyway can resolve without reinstall the lion because of sleep issues??

    I'm having exactly the same issue with my late 2010 27" iMac. The keyboard and mouse and trackpad won't wake the machine after being put to sleep manually.
    I found that when I woke it up using my Wacom tablet (connected via USB) the Bluetooth devices were NOT connected and nothing I did would wake bluetooth.
    I had to do a Restart which cleared the problem. I suppose without a hardware connected input device you're limited to shutting the machine down using the power button which is less than ideal.
    This never occured with Snow Leopard.

  • TS1367 My MacBook Pro when in sleep mode display turns black unable to wake.  When using the mouse it goes across screen like using an eraser and finding the middle of screen to get to the password area to turn back on.

    really have a hard time when leaving the computer on when attending other matters in the house. When returning, the screen is completely black and unable to wake(?) by touching the mouse or touch pad to put my password and be able to use the computer.  When I move the mouse pad looks like I am using the eraser like in photoshop and it clears the screen little by little.  Now I am able to point to the middle of the screen and erase the area where the password is in order to get to the screen and use the computer again.  Anyone else having this problem?  Took the laptop to the apple store near home and they told me there is nothing that can be done and I have to wait untile the new operating system, Mountain Lion comes out and supposedly this will fix the problem.  HELP!!!!

    I was so frustrated I call the Apple Tech Support and they walked me through.  It has been doing great.  The screen still turns black but now, when I touch the mouse or touch pad, I get the password prompt.  The Apple Store did not help but talking the the Apple Tech has helped a lot.  Thank you.

  • Windows 7 Sleep mode not turning off fan

    I have a weird sleep issue that just started, I've built a new PC, Win7x64 and just noticed this happening. When I put the computer to sleep manually, the machine looks like it goes to sleep, but the fans keep running and it 'sounds on'. If I wake the PC,
    then put it right back to sleep, it goes into deep sleep and the fans go off. Nothing I can see is keeping it awake, I have a i5-2500k, Asus P68 deluxe mobo, and it seems to be a repeatable issue. If the PC wakes up by itself to do something, then goes back
    to sleep on its own (times out) it goes into deep sleep. It's only when I manually do it that it has the issue. Anyone ever seen this? Thanks!

    I had the same issue a while ago. It ended up being because I added my network printer to the printers folder by clicking 'add a network printer' rather than 'add a local printer'.
    When I added a 'local' printer (and pointed it to the IP Address of the printer) the sleep issue went away. Both methods (network/local) were able to print to my network printer, but the network printer option would result in my fans never spinning down.
    Weird, right?

    When I go out for lunch, I always put my Macbook Pro either to sleep or turn off the display with Ctrl-Shift-Eject. Recently, a few times, when I returned to the computer, I find it in the login screen with all apps closed. What to do?

    What do you man by 'kills' the application?  Do open applications close?

  • I am having trouble printing even though the printer shows up fine.  Is there a printer queue that may be backed up/jammed?

    I have been printing from this iPad in the past with no problem.  Suddenly I can't get to print.  I have 2 printers on different WiFi.  I can see each printer when I am on that WiFi but it won't print.  I select the printer and then it is greyed out once selected.  Is there a printer queue that might be jammed?

    Turn your printer and router off and restart them and Reset your iPad: Hold down the home and sleep buttons, wait for the Apple logo, let go of the buttons.

  • Not detecting external display after waking up MBP from sleep mode

    I am a recent owner of a MBP and enjoying it. However, one problem that I can't seem to find a solution to is the external display problem after sleep mode.
    When I first boot up the Mac and plug in my Dell external monitor via the mini adapter, there is no problem with detection or display. However, every time I put the MBP in sleep mode and then wake it up again, the external monitor does not "wake" up and my MBP only displays my normal screen on the Mac.
    I tried to 'Detect Displays' to no avail and the only solution is unplugging the mini connection and plugging it back into the MBP for the MBP to re-detect the external monitor.
    Although this is a quick fix in itself, I do not want to wear out the mini port by doing this every timeI come out of sleep mode. Any solutions so that the external monitor will detect the MBP waking up from sleep and display properly? Thanks!

    And same problem here.
    Using a MBP 2.66 i7 with a Dell 3008WFP that's connected to the MBP through DisplayPort. It works some of the time but once in a while (only been using the new MBP for a couple of days now) the monitor won't come out of sleep mode. Turning it off/on causes OS X to completely ignore the monitor. I was able to get this setup to work again by pressing 'Detect Displays' in the System Preferences pane but most of the times that doesn't help. The only sure way to get the monitor working again is by booting into Windows through Bootcamp, Windows is able to use the monitor, if I reboot after that OS X sees the monitor again.
    Also saw a magenta line/stripe on the left side of my monitor and the monitor sometimes makes a buzzing sound when connected to the MBP through DisplayPort. That's what you get by using bleeding edge tech I guess :\ Only alternative is buying the mini-DP to dual-DVI connector but paying $99 just to be able to use an external monitor is rather insane. Besides that lots of users are having problems with this adapter.

  • Loud fans in sleep mode 20" G5 iMac Rev A, OS 10.4.11 New Info

    This is more of a confirmation and heads up on a problem I encountered and solved to see if any of you have other ideas.
    Several weeks ago I replaced the power supply bought from Mac Pro Online in my G5 iMac. When I put it to sleep I hadn't noticed anything odd at first because I'ld just walk away until one day I could here the fans going full blast. The screen was off as usual but the sleep mode light wasn't on while the fans were running. I waited about a minute until the fans returned to normal speed and the sleep mode light returned to its usual behavior only it seemed to be a lot brighter.
    I awoke the iMac from sleep and all was fine. I put it back to sleep and the screen shut off as usual but the sleep mode lights wouldn't turn on. I waited about a minute and listened to make sure that the iMac hadn't shut down and then the fans started up full blast for about 30 seconds and then returned to normal and the sleep mode lights turned back on.
    I shut the iMac down, disconnected all USB and ethernet cables and reset SMU using the unplug power cord, 10 second wait, replug holding down rear start button. Fixed it!
    Swapping out USB devices I narrowed it down to a Kingston USB Multi-sized port memory care reader hub-part number: FCR-HS219/1. I tested and got repeated results described above reconnecting it and downloading some images and ejecting. Loud fans in sleep mode happened again.
    Tried a MobileMate Memory Card Reader, downloaded images, ejected and no problems with sleep mode.
    My question is what could've messed up the Kingston Card Reader? It was working fine before the power supply replacement.
    Thanks,
    Tim

    There's no telling.
    Only cause that came to mind is a lightning hit last week that sounded very close by where all it did was cause the lights in my home to blink. The computer didn't. However, this might have fried the Kingston card reader.
    To give an idea of the resilience of the former power supply, about a year and half ago I had the back off with the iMac sitting upright on a towel on the table while I played a YouTube video to see if I could cool this thing down. Instead of cooling it I overheated it by blocking the vents to where suddenly the iMac just shutdown. I could detect a strong smell of melted plastic from the power supply.
    Put the iMac back on its stand and restarted without a hitch and I've never had any problems until several weeks ago when it just started shutting down for no reason. It passed the LED light test as it still does now with the new power supply.
    This is the first Mac out of three I've had since 1998 that allowed me to see odd behavior like this. I had to rely on my 2000 Pismo G3 PB to find a replacement PSU online. That thing never breaks.

  • HP Office Jet Pro 8500 - Sleep Mode

    I installed new software from the HP website on two 8500's. Now they both do not go into the sleep mode like they did before. Any solutions?

    I am running WIndows 7 operating system. The sleep mode worked fine until about six months ago. Now my HP never goes off or into a sleep mode. The color screen is always on. I checked the utilities options and the sleep mode is turn on. I believe HP did a firm ware or soft ware upgrade that is the cause of the problem. My brother has the same unit and his is also doing the same thing.

  • Macbook 2010 mid , having issue when in sleep mode under windows8

    Hi, guys
    It might be a bit early for this kind of question as windows 8 is not official released.
    I installed the MSDN version of windows8 (RTM), and it works fine and i got bootcamp installed without any problems.
    The only problem I have with it is when I set my macbook in sleep mode, it turns to sleep, but after certain hours, it automatically shut itself down. No matter it turns to sleep by doing it manually or close the lid, this is under power mode, one thing I find funny is if the macbook is on battery mode, it works fine, I turn it to sleep mode in the night and in the morning, it is still in sleep mode, but if I plug in the power, it stops working, it always shut itself down after 4 or 5 hours. I checked all the settings and did not find any setting that are related.
    Any ideas?? maybe the bootcamp is not supportted well in windows 8???
    Please advise. thanks guys.

    Just to give an update on what actually happened, the logic board was knackered and needed to be replaced (with labour, this should have cost £410)... On a Macbook Pro which was almost exactly a year and a half old. I believe this is actually a lot more common than it probably should be (from doing a seach to find other people in similar situations, as well as court cases). Though, thankfully if you buy the product through Apple, they're happy to sort it out with no cost to yourself and no issues (providing the laptop is in good condition and less than 6 years old). Mine was actually from Tesco, and luckily enough there wasn't too much difficulty in getting a partial refund to cover the cost of repairs, though I believe this isn't the case with some other retailers, though Apple themselves are trying to change this and be as helpful as possible.
    So, basically, I'm leaving this information here incase anyone should happen to find this by doing a search of similar symptoms to those I had. If you find out your logic board has gone and your 1 year warranty is no longer valid, pursue the retailler who you originally bought the product from. By law in the UK (under the UK Sales of Goods Act.) they have to help you out as your electrical goods should last 'a reasonable amount of time', which is anything up to 6 years. Hopefully there are similar laws and consumer rights in place in other countries too. Again, Apple are very much aware of the situation with the logic boards so will more than likely help you out as much as they can.
