Is there a tutorial for layers for dummies

I have been messing with ps for a long time but avoiding anything to do with layers...I guess it is time to learn...Is there an easy way to learn layers  ie making a layer, saving a layer, editing layers ...in my advancing years we have to go slow..So is there a tutorial for layers for dummies??
Capt Marvy

Bill, I came to Photoshop from the Amiga 1000 with Delux Paint, an application years ahead of its time, that would do animated 3D graphics, and with a cheap genloc, overlay them onto video.  Photoshop had reached version 4 by the time I switched, and I have always been a Windows user anyway.  You were spot on about when Layers were introduced though.
Capt, if you find, and like, Matt Kloskowski's book, then you might like to follow the Photoshop Guys on Photoshop User TV   That is an amazing free resourse, and there are over 300 episodes now.  Scott Kelby has got together one heck of a team over there, with as well as Matt and Scott Kelby himself, of course, there is Cory Barker of Planet Photoshop which is a first class resource all by itself.
I find video tutorials more accessible than books nowadays, because my eyesight is none too flash, which reminds of another worthwhile resource (and I am not being rude when I say)  You Suck at Photoshop.  These are hilarious, but also full of great content.  In fact Donny would be right at home in this group as he often dreams up clever ways to use Photoshop tools.  The way he makes the train disapear into the distance in his Vanishing Point video is just one example.

  • Is there any tutorial for jms development with jdeveloper out there ?

    Hi
    Thank you for reading my post
    is there any tutorial which show us how to use jdeveloper +oc4j for JMS stuff ?
    I mean an end 2 end tutorial to build mdb+jms resources in oc4j + client
    it will be far better if the tutorial shows how we can use jdeveloper features for this task (if it provide any wizard...)

    This is an example of a client:
    public String listeningJMS (Context context) throws Exception
    String topicName = "jms/demoTopic";
    String topicConnectionFactoryName = "jms/TopicConnectionFactory";
    TopicConnectionFactory topicConnectionFactory = null;
    TopicConnection topicConnection = null;
    TopicSession topicSession = null;
    Topic topic = null;
    TopicSubscriber topicSubscriber = null;
    TextMessage message = null;
    String fileName = null;
    * Look up connection factory and topic. If either does
    * not exist, exit.
    try
    topicConnectionFactory = (TopicConnectionFactory)
    context.lookup(topicConnectionFactoryName);
    topic = (Topic) context.lookup(topicName);
    * Create connection.
    * Create session from connection; false means session is
    * not transacted.
    * Create subscriber.
    * Register message listener (TextListener).
    * Receive text messages from topic.
    * When all messages have been received, enter Q to quit.
    * Close connection.
    topicConnection =
    topicConnectionFactory.createTopicConnection();
    topicSession =
    topicConnection.createTopicSession(false,
    Session.AUTO_ACKNOWLEDGE);
    topicSubscriber =
    topicSession.createSubscriber(topic);
    topicConnection.start();
    System.out.println("Receiving: ");
    TextMessage msg = (TextMessage) topicSubscriber.receive();
    String xmlString =msg.getText();
    topicConnection.close();
    System.err.println("Received: "+xmlString);
    fileName = this.getFileName(msg.getText());
    } catch (Exception e) {
    throw e;
    } finally {
    if (topicConnection != null) {
    try {
    topicConnection.close();
    } catch (JMSException e) {throw e;}
    return fileName;
    public static Context getInitialContext() throws NamingException {
    Hashtable env = new Hashtable();
    // Standalone OC4J connection details
    env.put( Context.INITIAL_CONTEXT_FACTORY, "oracle.j2ee.rmi.RMIInitialContextFactory" );

  • Is there a tutorial for uploading fill- able forms to website and making them submit-table?

    I want to upload a couple of fillable forms (pdf's) to website and allow customers to fill and submit. Is there a tutorial out there for this that someone could point me to? I can't seem to find one that really answers my questions.

    A problem you'll encounter with those types of forms is security when transmitting the data. Obviously, the forms will contain sensitive information, and using email or a non-secure posting to a web server would not be acceptable. I personally would not send such data that way.
    It's possible to set up the form and web server so that the data is submitted securely. If your web server can handle that, it would be the best way to go. You would have to somehow program the web server to manage it all. Now I'm being vague, but that's because there are a lot of details to consider.

    In the Apps "Pages" is there a tutorial for the Business Card Templet?

    Peter I see you are humble, as my self. I don't see a way to easily fill all the individual cards on the templet. Pages '09 version 4.1 (923)
    I first started using Business Card Templets with Microsoft Publisher back in 2000. Initially I filled out a business card and was given a choice to print 8 or 10 cards to a page. Since then I have been out of the loop due to illness, Pages '09 give me the choice to print 8 and 10 cards to a page but I'm missing the initial step.   laughing about it but confused too

  • CS3 and CS4 - Is there a tutorial for Warp in Photoshop?

    Is there a tutorial for Warp in Photoshop? I am trying to use warp to curve a flat label into a rounded one (with the curve being like the lower half of a circle as if you are looking at the bottom from a slight top view). So far, visually, the top curve is warping in the middle but the edges are staying kind of straight so it gives a funny curve. Thanks.

    Not really. It's up to you to know why you want it.

  • Is there a tutorial for Utiliboad available?

    I'm an experienced Multisim user, but am new to Utiliboard.
    Does anyone know of any tutorial available? I would greatly appreciate it.
    Thanks,
    Dan

    The best tutorial is the manual that came with Ultiboard. You should be able to find it in C:\Program Files\National Instruments\Circuit Design Suite 10.0\documentation.
    If you already have been there done that, then there are some tutorials on the NI Developers Zone. I don't know any exact URLs, but I am sure if you go there you can easily search for what you need.
    I hope I have been helpful.

  • Is there a tutorial for learning thumbnails and galleries?

    I'm interested in learning how to create an image gallery. But I need to know the CSS and how to create a thumbnail of the image.

    I think your question is very broad.  There are heaps of resources available on the web and you will find most of it with google.
    If you don't have an image editor you can find free software that will resize images to make thumbnails.  This is probably only one of many examples:

    As for the CSS there's no substitute really, for understanding the code. You could start with w3schools.

  • Looking for a good tutorial or book for 3D composite

    Hi, I do editing for 3D animation at work (simple kind) and working along with 2 other 3D modelers.
    We recently came down to the conclusion that we need to composite to be able to render our animation.
    However, none of us really know how to do 3D composite, including myself.
    (I mean we know the simple composite using alpha channels and such... but not to the point to using z-depth or shadow maps... etc..).
    I was looking around online and book store to find out if there is any good resources for us to learn. I do not have much luck of it, unfortunately.
    I'd like to have our 3D modlers to know how to split to all different layers for a clean composite purpose.... (like for me to use in Shake ). From what I found out, higher end composite, you can split most of the gemoetries its own object IDs, and shadow map/layers, lighting layers... (even they render separetely, it do cast shadow as other objects surrounds it, or refection..) and then composite in one scene.
    I believe we create pretty good animation when we rendered them all together in one scene, and now we are up to the point that there are too many geometeries and render farm computers can't handle to render (and they are not lower end compters but they crash when we try to render with not enough memories).
    I'm not really looking for having real footage as background and 3D infront .. that kind of composite...
    If there is anyone can direct me to a right book? or online website to learn more of this stuff for all of us, I'll be really appriciate it.
    Thank you for your time...

  • Is there a cook book method for creating an exe out of Teststand ?

    I'm trying to port Teststand to a target machine. I want to use LV 6.0 Operator Interface on the target machine also. EXACTLY what steps do I have to preform to get the Operator Interface, all my VI's that Teststand uses in my particular application and all the engines I need to run what was written on the Developmental station onto the Target machine. I couldn't find the operator interface in LV manual and the Teststand book was terrible to follow.

    Hello Clint -
    The unfortunate problem with the manual is that it has to cover all possible variations of a deployment scenario, and as a result it gets a little jumbled. There is usually a fairly point-by-point document available on the web, sadly it is down this week for edits for new TestStand 3.0 material but I will attach below a word documents with the contents of the tutorial valid for a TestStand 2.0.x / LabVIEW solution as this may help.
    In general, the super-short list of events goes as follows:
    (1) Deploy TestStand Run Time Engine (use the Wizard in the tools menu)
    (2) Use your 'testexec.bld' file (in the OI's folder)as a short cut in LabVIEW for creating a functioning EXE and installer for your interface. Not that this works best if yo
    u have a default interface, you'll have to handle any additional files yourself.
    (3) Carry your code and support files (this can be integrated into step 1 if you want) however you want.
    Naturally the issues arise when you have custom components or nonstandard situations, read the attached doc below for the 'long list' that covers the details.
    If you're using TestStand 3.0 there are new tools that can make this process faster/easier but it sounds as though you're working with a fairly finished system so I won't go into those right now. If there is a particular part of the process you are concerned about, feel free to post again and we will focus on just that.
