Is there a tutorial on editing video in iMovie?

I can trim clips and stick them together, but I need to learn some techniques for making them flow smoothly instead of being choppy.  Are there any tutorials on doing this?  Thanks.

Well, it read different in your original post, sorry.
You can detach the audio from the video, and manipulate the transitions separately with the Precision Editor.
But... before we write a manual here again, please refer to an existing one - e.g. the second one in my previous post. Thanks!
Also, here is a discussion forum dedicated to iMovie where you might find help for more specific matters that are not covered elsewhere.

  • Is there any way to edit video imported to the ipad?

I'll stop my search for a way to import video files from my sony camera if I can't even edit them once I get them onto the ipad.

Unless there is a 3rd party app that provides for this, the answer is no.
Apple will have an iMovie app for the iPhone 4 for editing video that was captured with the iPhone 4, but not sure if the same will be available for the iPad.

  • Import Edited Video Into iMovie 8.0.5

I have an edited movie that I created on a previous version of iMovie. I saved the movie to mini DV tape. I want to import the movie in its edited version to iMovie 8.0.5. When I import it, it puts the clips out of order, esp transitions and titles. It seems that there must be some timecode in the DV somewhere that iMovie 8.0.5 is using to reorder the fully edited video. The question is then: How do you import a fully edited movie into iMovie without it reordering it into clips. If there is no option to import the clip, then I will have to re-edit the entire movie -- a true waste of time. Please help. Robert.

Hello, Robert, and Welcome to the Discussions,
iMovie 9 (v 8.x) cannot import an earlier version of iMovie and keep its edits. You will get the clips, edited clips, photos, but no effects or titles, and all the transitions will be converted to cross-dissolves.
If you still have the previous iMovie version used to create that movie, you can export it as Quick Time Full Quality and import that QT movie into iMovie 09.

  • Cant edit video in iMovie because of format....

I have not been able to edit video from a band performance that was this past weekend. It works fine on my Moms computer, which is running Windows Vista, but I can't play it on my Mac. The video files are in .MOD, but I do not know how to convert it over to edit the performance. Is there any way that I can convert it, such as a program I can run it through? Any help would be appreciated
    Rance

Before converting the movie try this:
    1) Create a root folder called Mp_Root on an external drive, USB stick, SD card... (probably works with a disk image as well, though I haven't tried it)
    2) Inside this folder create another folder called 101PNV01
    3) Copy your .mod files inside the 101PNV01 folder and change the extensions to .mpg
    4) Restart iMovie. It will now detect the external drive as a camera and allow to import all the clips using the date created/modified info as timestamps for perfect cataloguing.
iMovie does NOT re-encode the movie files, you retain full quality. It simply puts them in a .mov container and creates the thumbnails.

  • How to edit video using iMovie?

    Hi,
I am new to iMovie. I am not familiar with its key tools. Can any one please tell me how to edit a video using the software? I need to put a video on Youtube displaying features of my website http://www.fundoofun.com

Move the video between iPads using Dropbox or an App like Photo Transfer.

  • What new setup would you get for editing video in iMovie?

Hey gang. I'm upgrading all the electronics in my home and would love some buying and configuring advice. This question could go in the desktop discussion group as well, but the main thing that will tax the next system is family video editing and (temporary) storage. What desktop would you get? iMac or maybe Mac Mini? What camcorder? Canon Vixia ( http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/838768-REG/Canon_M50_HF_M50.html )? I want movies to load quickly and easily, so was thinking of one with SD card media.  Time Capsule? (One advisor said to go with another router). And if you were going to get a new TV, what would you get? Flat panel or projector? Yeah, I know: my credit card is gonna be lovin' me.  Been saving up, though, and just built all new furniture for my home office, so I can't wait to load it up with nice new gear. Thanks for any advice!

    • TimeCapsule is no router, but a backup machine; add another drive to backup backup
Sorry to correct that Karsten - you are always right normally
    From the Apple Store ( http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD033LL/A/time-capsule-3tb?fnode=4d )
    Easy wireless networking.
Connect your DSL or cable modem to Time Capsule, then quickly set it up with the easy-to-use AirPort Utility, which is available as download for both Mac OS X and Windows. In minutes, you and up to 50 others can use your Mac computers or PCs to surf the web, stream video, share photos and more — without wires.3
I think that earlier versions fit your description, but the latest does have wireless networking. It works like the Airport Extreme base station.

  • How do I take advantage of high frame rates while editing video in iMovie '09?

I have a GoPro Hero2 Hi-def video camera. It's capable of shooting up to 120 frames per second. How can I take advantage of that smooth slo-mo in iMovie '09?

    hi kyle,
sorry, but just to elaborate on your response a little while ago here:
    - i captured the 24PA footage using the advanced pulldown
    - i captured the 24P footage using no pulldown
    - i am editing in a 29.97 timeline now, as most of my footage was shot with 24P
please let me know your thoughts on how i should go about working with this footage!
    thanks!

  • Help? Can I edit, voice over, combine videos in iMovie HD?

Or do I need to purchase iLife and get iMovie '09. I kinda would like to get the new iMovie '09 - can I just upgrade to that when I only have iMovie HD on my Mac? Or will that not work?
And I'm having a hard time editing videos in iMovie HD - does it have all those same capabilities or do I need the new one. So confused.
    Thanks tons for help!

Hi Robyn - now that imovie HD has been superceded, the original video tutorials produced by Apple have been replaced by ones for the latest version. So here are some found on the web:
    http://a20.video2.blip.tv/2150000695225/Askthetechies-Episode56IMoviePartI480.mo v

    http://www.teachertube.com/searchresult.php?page=2&search_type=&search_id=imovie&searchkey=&sort=
NOTE: these are actually for iMovie HD6, which has a few minor differences from your iMovie HD version, (eg. Your one has no 'Themes', and the method of previewing Photo editing is different). but most of the advice applies equally well.
    Hope this helps.

  • Why does my exported video from iMovie on iOS is letter boxed on all four sides?

The original video viewed in the cameras roll fills up the whole screen, but after exporting the edited video from iMovie, it has letter boxing on all four sides.

You would get better results if you convert the MP4 ciips into Apple Intermediate Codec before editing. After editing you can render them back into MP4 if you want.
MPEG Streamclip (free) will do this conversion. Or get iMovie 09 and it will do it.

  • Can I use iMac 2007 as connected monitor to a 2013 iMac to edit movies on iMovie?

How do I connect 2013 iMac with thunderbolt to 2007 iMac with FireWire 800 to have an extra monitor to edit videos on iMovie? Both iMacs are running Mavericks.

No, what you are referring to is called Target Display Mode, your 2007 is simply too old and does not support it. TDM is discussed in the follow FAQ.

Buy another hard drive.  They're cheap these days.
In fact, buy a couple of 'em.  I recommend a minimum of five internal hard drives.
    C: Windows and Programs
D: Project, graphic and audio files
    E: Cache and Scratch
    F: Media
    G: Export

Thanks for that info! Even in my time answering questions on iMovie Discussion Group, I never had a good understanding of when and how Optimize Movie came into play. I always would import as Optimized and Large Size and figured that was good enough. But knowing you got much, much more flexibility doing it the way you describe gives me a much better understanding of the different routes you can take into the Event Library.

  • Is there a way to edit m4v videos?

Videos I've exported to m4v with H.264 audio in QuickTime Pro, I can't seem to edit in Final Cut Pro (Final Cut Studio 2 version).
Is there a plugin or something I can add to make it work with these kinda of videos?

Are there any free open source video editing tools that will add a simple text overlay to my videos?
Final Cut Pro includes its own text generator and the Boris text plugins. As you have FCS2, you also have LiveType and Motion, both have titling functions . Compressor can also add a text overlay such as a watermark. QuickTime Player will let you add text. You can use a plain text file in DVD Studio Pro to make subtitles that are permanent or able to be turned on and off as the viewer wishes.
I did, as stated above, still doesn't work.
Of course it does. Either you are doing something wrong or your computer does not support ProRes.
Describe the steps you are taking.
Then why does it work on my friend's computer running FCS3....
Without knowing exactly what steps your friend is taking and the capabilties of their computer, who can say? H264 can be imported and it will be converted to the current Sequence setting. Perhaps their machine is powerful enough to make the conversion time seem acceptable? Whatever it is, they are not editing native H264 or m4v.

  • Is there a tutorial video on using Master slides in Keynote?

The tutorial videos have been helpful to me.  Is there a tutorial video regarding the use of Master slides in Keynote?

Apple has this non-video material: http://www.apple.com/support/keynote/themes/
    Lynda.com has this fee-based training: http://www.lynda.com/iWork-tutorials/keynote-08-essential-training/Using-master- slides/32016-4.html
