Is there a USB hub that works as well as plugging directly into Mac?

Some items don't seem to work as well when they are plugged into my "entrega machub 4U" as when they are plugged directly into my Mac Pro (i.e. my Logitech Web cam). Given the low number of USB ports on my Mac, I need a hub that can handle my accessories. Can anyone recommend a brand that works as well as plugging directly into the Mac?
Thanks for any help.

I'm with the hatter, pci-e is the best way to go.

Looking for a USB hub that will sync and charge my iPad and iPhone ideally with 7 ports.
Is there one out there as I can't seem to find any?
Just about to return a D-Link dub-H7 hub as it seems to becausing issues with the USB ports on the iMac. All seems well when i leave a device charging when I go to bed but in the morning none of the iMac ports work until i restart.

This is the problem with these ports. I bought a powered USB at MicroCenter last winter. It had 7 ports, two were designated for high powered devices and yet I plug in one iPhone to charge and within a few minutes, the hub will disconnect from the computer.
All I can recommend is searching for POWERED hubs on Amazon and read the reviews. Not sure if there are some that will actually work but trying a few can get expensive.

  • I need to find a powered usb hub that works with my Macbook pro

I've got a macbook pro mid 2010. And 2 usb ports isn't enough. Even with the powered hubs taht I have tried none will seem to charge my ipad 2. It only works if it is plugged directly in to the Macbook. So is there a powered usb hub out there that can handle having an ipod and and ipad plugged into them and actually charge these devices. Thanks in advance.

    Yes. Google...

  • PROBLEM with 24/96 bit-rate USB DAC that worked fine until I plugged in two

I'm using a late 2008 15" Macbook Pro that I bought Jan 2009 right before the SD card models came out. Mac OSX 10.6.4 and iTunes 9.2 are installed. I have a Nuforce Icon HDP and a CEntrance DACport 24/96 bit-rate USB DAC (external sound cards) that still work great right now. Note - 16 bit/44 Khz is CD quality, and these 24/96 files are hi-resolution downloads that are closer to SACD or DVD audio.
I have been evaluating a new third 24/96 USB DAC plugged directly into the Macbook USB port (no hub) which has been working fine for over 2 weeks with 24/96 bit-rate lossless music files in iTunes. Audio Midi Setup is set for 24/96 to match the music file's resolution. After making suggestions to the manufacturer they made some improvements and sent me a new version to listen for the differences.
I listened to the new one for a day and it worked fine, but when I plugged in the original test sample into the second USB port at the same time as the new one in order to compare them, the sound became garbled and noisy. This never happened when either one was plugged in by itself. Note, if I make changes to the DAC's bit-rate in Audio Midi Setup I usually close iTunes first and then re-open it when I am done.
Upon hearing this new problem I unplugged both of the new USB DACs and plugged just one of them back in, but now it causes iTunes music playback to pause when one is plugged in and set for 24/96 in audio midi setup. Prior to plugging in both at the same time, either one worked just fine by itself. There is no reason when unplugging one or the other that they shouldn't start working again. But now I can't play any 24/96 music through either one anymore. In quicktime player the songs don't pause like with iTunes, but there is no sound coming through even with just one DAC plugged in at a time. Then I discovered that if I go into Audio Midi Setup application and lower the bit rate to 24/48 then iTunes will resume playing again and I can hear the music fine with iTunes or Quicktime player.
Basically, my Macbook Pro has now lost the ability to play 24/96 bit rate with either of these new USB DACs, when they both worked fine before I plugged them in at the same time. More confusing is that they use the same USB receiver chip as in one of the DACs that I mentioned above in the first paragraph, and both the HDP and DACport still work fine at 24/96 bit-rate. It's only these two new USB DAC that require me to lower the bit rate in Audio Midi Setup to 24/48 in order to listen through them, and this wasn't a problem as recently as yesterday!
The computer is acting like some setting needs to be wiped out - it's DEFINITELY NOT the USB DAC's that are faulty because they still both work fine at 24/96 on my wife's iMac (I'm afraid to try plugging in both at the same time to the iMac in case I screw that Mac up too).
I have reset the PRAM a few times, and this doesn't fix the problem. I thought maybe the com.apple.audiomidisetup.plist file could be corrupted and deleted it, but that didn't help. I don't know what to try next to get the Macbook to start fresh when trying to use these devices, short of having to re-install OSX.
Please, does anyone have a suggestion of how I can make the Macbook forget it ever saw these two USB DACs, and let me start fresh so they start working normally again? I do dozens of reviews for Head-fi.org and I can't afford to have my Macbook Pro compromised like this, which could prevent me from doing some reviews or evaluating new products.

    UPDATE:
As noted in the first post, both of these newer USB DAC work fine at 24/96 on my wife's iMac, so it's clear that they didn't both become defective when I connected them to the Macbook Pro at the same time.
Resetting the Macbook Pro PRAM didn't help, so I removed the hard shell laptop case to get to the battery and remove it, then reset the SMC. After that I could use the original DAC at 24/96 again, but only IF it was plugged into the rear USB port. If I plugged it into the front USB port then the sound was garbled and filled with noise. This was a vast improvement over no sound at all.
Then I switched to the replacement/updated DAC, but I got no sound at all from either USB port at any bit-rate. And returning to the original DAC again now results in no sound again.
Sigh... I will reset the PRAM and SMC again, and see how far I can get with this. I'd still love some help. Thanks!

  • USB Hub that also charges at  2A for iPad

I am researching if there is USB hub that can charge an ipad at the required 2A rate and as well allows connection to other devices through the same USB hub.
I found one that advertises a 2A port.  It is made by UNITECK and the model number is Y-2072.  It is a 6 port hub that has one ipad charging port that delivers at 2A chargin rate.  I want to know if anyone has tried this USB hub to know if it enables simultaneous charging at 2A as well as data transfer to another deveice connected to the hub ?

The following powered hub is amazing!  Not only charges and syncs my iPhone 5 and iPad mini simultaneously, but charges them much faster than the Apple charger.  I talked with the company before I bought it and it's been thoroughly tested with both devices.  Best USB hub I've ever had.

  • Looking for a good usb hub that will allow my mouse and external hard to work together

I'm looking for some ideas for a good usb hub that will allow me to use a wireless mouse and an external hard drive at the same time, without shorting out the mouse.  The one i currently have, when I plug in just the mouse, it's fine, but as soon as i put the external hard drive into the hub port, the mouse no longer works and i have to reinstall the drivers for the mouse.

Hubs and computers vary in their power needs, but it seems that your setup is lacking in the power department. This isn't a big deal with desktop computers, but since you use a MBP, you're going to do best with a powered USB hub.
If you're looking for a USB hub with power supply, Belkin is generally reliable (and above average in price). But the D-Link is compact, reliable, and has a good price. Aim for a USB 3.0 hub if possible, though 2.0 will work fine with just about anything. Insist on a refund if the hub doesn't work in your system. Make sure it's compact, since you'll be carrrying it around.

  • USB hub stopped working

For years, I've used a powered Belkin 6-port hub to connect an Apple aluminum extended keyboard to a rear port on a 2008 Mac Pro:  the way my desk is laid out, the pathetic 3 foot keyboard cord otherwise doesn't reach.  A couple months ago, upon restarting, the keyboard wasn't working, so I had to plug it directly into the Mac to start up, but once it was running, could switch back to the hub and it would work fine.  Now the keyboard is only working plugged directly into the Mac.  I haven't changed operating system or internal hardware during this time.  I tried a Belkin USB extension cord, but the Mac acts as though nothing is plugged in.
Is there either an extension cord or USB hub that will more reliably work between a keyboard and Mac Pro?     Thanks.

Amazing! glad got it fixed. Thought you were going to have to buy another kb (Amazon has those too and some of the older ones I like better, free s/h and no tax).
A couple people found the Apple USB Extension we all got to be an issue. For me, crimp where the mouse cab le was ''bent' and cause some kind of short.

  • USB Hub not working

I have a hub which has worked fine but is now no longer working. A light on it still lights up and it is recognized in System Profiler. Also items plugged into it are also recognized in System profiler.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks
    John

Have you tried a new USB cable between the computer and the USB hub?
And if another USB port than the one being used now, has not been tried
to see if the issue is in one port on the computer, and not another, try it.
Also, sometimes the lights are on, but nobody is home. The hub can be
bad and still appear to be there.
{Have you tried the computer with only the keyboard and mouse attached?
If that works OK, then consider the limits of port power to run other USBs.
    Then, a new powered USB hub may work, if the Mac's ports aren't bad.}
There may be a low-power situation (assuming USB hub is powered) that
somehow does not translate into a notice or 'warning dialog box' on screen.
Perhaps one of the connectors in a USB cable or in the computer's USB
ports, necessary for data flow, is not working correctly?
At one point, I'd bought a two pack of powered USB hubs; to find one of
them did not work right out of the box. It was un-powered, yet the AC
adapter supplied adequate power. Items appeared in Sys Profiler, yet
if more than one were used, the Mac's ports could not sustain them.
The package was such a low price, I kept the working one; the store I'd
bought them from no longer had any in stock. The good one still works.
Have you tried to reset the SMC or 'power management' unit device?
This may be a last effort of desperation & signals a service tech visit.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Need a USB hub to work with a multifunction printer

Can anyone recommend a reliable USB hub that can work with the HP Officejet J4580 Multifunction (fax) Printer? I bought a Belkin 7-port hub for my G4 FW800 laptop (OS 10.3.9) and it works with an older dedicated printer and a 2-year-old multifunction printer (no fax), but I just got a new Belkin 7-port to go with the same laptop and it won't work with the new multifunction, so I'll have to return it.
Any suggestions for a 2+ port hub that's reliable and would work with this new printer? AC- or laptop powered doesn't matter, though I'd prefer to have the AC option. Amazon's web page on this says it will work with all 1.0 and 2.0 USB devices, but obviously that's wrong, and I like not to make the same mistake twice. Thanks!

I'd have to agree with motsteve too.
Stay away from unpowered hubs, they are nothing but trouble or should I be more diplomatic and say that they do work for some devices but not all and some unexplained behaviour has been known to happen with them.
The same can be said of bus-powered hard drives.
Are you sure it is not a driver problem ?
Are you sure this MFP is compatible with the OS you are using ? Have you checked the system requirements first ?
I think the USB hub you have is probably fine.
If it is USB2.0 compliant and is mains powered then there is something else at work here.
    1) Check the cables - try another if you have one.
    2) Unplug the printer , turn the computer and hub off.
    3) Reconnect everything and then turn on first the printer , then the hub , lastly the computer.
    4) If 3) fails ,do the same again but in a different order.
I have had problems with peripherals not showing on the desktop or getting a " Can't connect to device XXXX " so I have turned everything off, unplugged them all, then reconnected and turned everything back on.
Once that peripheral is mounted once I generally find that I don't have a problem with it again.
I think it may lie in the order that the OS extensions load or something along those lines.

  • USB hubs quit working with 10.7.2

I have a Mac Pro, dual quad-core 2.8GHz Xeon, 10GB ram. Three D-link DUB-H7 usb hubs. After the update to 10.7.2 and iTunes 5.0.1 (not sure exaclty when), my usb devices & hubs quit working properly. For a while they would work occasionally.
I have a USB keyboard which works if it's plugged in directly when the computer boots. But other devices (external drives, flash card reader, iPod dock, USB display) don't work at all. I tested the hubs with another Lion system, and they work on that. iTunes wireless sync quit as well.
I've tried resetting PRAM and SMC. Neither fixed the problem. Tried repairing permissions. No change. Rebooting (many times).
Could it be a USB driver conflict? I removed VirtualBox usb drivers, as well as Parallels, but not vmware, which I also own.
When I plug in a device, I get 'trouble enumerating' and then "The IOUSBFamily was not able to enumerate a device." in the system.log
Any ideas? Is my motherboard dying? If so, why does the keyboard still work, and nothing else?

Followup info. I reset the PRAM and booted into 10.5.1, on another drive.
This time, similar behavior; HID devices (keyboard, mouse, bluetooth) work fine. Hubs (which work fine on another Lion computer!) generate a bunch of console errors:

  • USB-Hub not working on LEFT USB port?

    Hello,
I have installed Windows 7 Ultimate 64 Bit on my MacBook Pro 13" Retina (Early 2013) and it's running fine. Boot Camp version: 5.0.5033.
But I have one problem: I bought an external monitor (Dell U2414H) which has an built-in 4-Port USB 3.0 hub. So I connect the Dell monitor using a DisplayPort 1.2a cable and an USB 3.0 cable. But Windows only recognizes the monitor's built-in USB hub when I plug the USB cable into the right USB port (when I sit in front of the MacBook). Then it works without problems. But when I plug the USB cable into the left USB port of the MacBook Windows only says "USB device not recognized". But other devices like USB sticks and USB drives also work without problems on left and right USB port of the MacBook. Also when I boot in OS 10.9 Mavericks the monitor's USB hub is working on both USB ports of the MacBook. So I think it isn't a hardware failure. I also re-installed Windows, but I have still the same problem.
Do you have any idea, why only the monitor's built-in USB hub is not working in Windows on the left port of the MBP or even how I could fix it?
Is Boot Camp 5.0.5033 the most current version? I checked the box to download the latest Windows support software and also didn't find anything newer than 5.0.5033 to download, but sometimes I read about 5.1.1 - but where could I download it? AND: Doest it help?
    Thanks in advance!

I think I've hit a variation on the problem you're enoucntering.  I have a late-2013 13-inch Macbook Pro Retina.  I've just installed Boot Camp and a copy of Windows 7 Pro.  This is my first experience with Boot Camp and Windows on a Mac, so I'm in foreign teritory.
The install all went fine and Windows 7 booted up fine and so far, all hardware seems to be working as expected, with one exception.  Things went sideways when I tried use it in "clamshell" mode - lid closed with external monitors and all my peripherals attached to a USB hub.  I set up Boot Camp to boot into Windows and attempted to boot.  It would give me the usual boot-up fanfair and a then a gray screen for a few seconds, and then it would reboot.  It just rebooted over and over.   I eventually discovered the issue was the USB hub - without the hub connected , it would boot just fine.  Once it was booted into Windows, I could attach the the hub and everything would be recognized normally.  Furthermore, I could put the system in sleep mode, wake it up and everything would be working fine.  But it simply refuses to boot the USB hub attached.  I've stumbled on a couple related threads - see https://discussions.apple.com/message/23802231#23802231.  The suggestion is that only certain hubs to not work.  I've got two different high quality powered hubs and both display the same behaviour.  The other point is, that when booting into OS X with the same hub, it works perfectly.  So it's a strange problem.
Note that after reading your post, I did try the hub in both right and left USB ports and that made no difference in my case.  I do have one more hub to try (built into my Dell monitor).  I'll report back if that happens to work.

  • A barcode scanner that was connected directly to the Mac's USB port stopped working as the "USB had too much power drawn", even though it has worked for over a year in that port.  WHen we plugged it into the port on the keyboard, the device works. Why?

A barcode scanner that was connected directly to the Mac's USB port stopped working as the "USB had too much power drawn", even though it has worked for over a year in that port.  When we plugged it into the port on the keyboard, the device works. Why?  Obviously the device is operational.  Could the USB port have burned out from having too much power drawn?  If so, is it reparable?

It can't draw "too much" power, it can only draw as much as the USB port is able to provide and no more. IIRC, the keyboard port has a lower power output than the iMac's port.
That being said, yea, it's possible that the port has failed and it can be replaced or if another port works you can use that one. Although if it is still under warranty or covered by Apple Care, then I would take it to an Apple Store or service provider to get the port repaired.

  • Is there a flash player that works on the ipad

is there a flash player that works on the ipad

    Re: Flash player for Ipad
Aug 14, 2011 2:22 AM (in response to phaisto)
Folks, here's the sad truth, according to Engadget:
"After nearly 4 years of the iOS platform, Adobe is still having difficulty being able to get Flash Player on Apple’s mobile platform. Many sided with Adobe on this one a couple of years ago calling this exclusion unreasonable, but the latest failures for Android Honeycomb to deliver decent Flash performance justifies Apple's decision. Even the Frash hacks bogged down the 1st generation iPad and the PlayBook had problems bring Flash to their Blackberry Tablet."
Some months ago, before I really researched this issue, I was determined to "get around Steve Jobs obvious hidden personal and business greed agendas" and run Flash on a tablet. So I bought an ASUS Transformer Tablet just to be able to run flash (a $400 "app")! OK, just a wee bit over the top. But, I can now personally testify to the surprisingly disappointing performance of Flash on Android.
Based on that confirmation, and on numerous reports from those running Flash on jailbroken iPads, either Adobe has lost all of it top notch programmers to Google, Facebook, -- and likely even Apple! -- or it never has been serious about porting Flash to iOS (I suppose this could have been intentional, thinking that the absence of Flash would do serious harm to the platform once folks found out).
But whatever. I am finally over my Flash of "brilliance" and resigned to just skip over the web sites that require Flash, and wait till I am at my iMac or PC to do those that are really necessary. And, despite that the ASUS Tablet does technically run Flash, it does it so poorly that I preferred to use my Mac or PC.
I gave the minty new ASUS Tablet which is otherwise a nicely done, but still "work in progress" (unlike my Android phone) to my med school daughter. She loves it -- and now calls me all the time to talk, usually about how to get stuff to work on it (but any excuse to talk to her is good by me ;-).
