Is there a virus on mac os at the moment?

my laptop has been going bonkers, its really slow at start up and there seems to be lots of glitches all of a sudden

Hmmm, "bonkers," you say?  Very precise term.  Perhaps you might provide us with more specific information from which we may be able to discern what is going on and, then, be able to offer suggestions.  Unfortunately, bonkers just doesn't suggest a virus (there are none.)  But a trojan is possible provided you have downloaded and installed something from the internet in response to a pop-up alert warning you are infected.  Is this the case?  If not, then you might consider the following:
Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility.  For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior;  DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation.  TechTool Pro 4.5.1 or higher are Intel Mac compatible;  Drive Genius is similar to TechTool Pro in terms of the various repair services provided.  Versions 1.5.1 or later are Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.  Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts had been significantly reduced in Tiger and Leopard.  These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc.  Other utilities are also available such as Onyx, Leopard Cache Cleaner, CockTail, and Xupport, for example.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack.  If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline.  Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
Backuplist
Carbon Copy Cloner
Data Backup
Deja Vu
iBackup
JaBack
Silver Keeper
MimMac
Retrospect
Super Flexible File Synchronizer
SuperDuper!
Synchronize Pro! X
SyncTwoFolders
Synk Pro
Synk Standard

  • Is there a virus protection software available for the ipad 2?

IS there any form of virus protection softward available for the ipad 2? Have seen AVG etc for ipad 2 talked about.

It's not strictly correct to say there are no viruses or to be more accurate 'malware' for i-devices as there are
There isn't. Provide links/proof if there are.
If you really are an admin for McAfee then you should know what a virus is, and that there are none for iOS. If there were a virus for iOS it would be all over the news. It is also true to say there is no malware for stock iOS devices. If you've jailbroken your device, then maybe so, but you've purposefully put yourself at risk.
hence the last 2 iOS updates which were patching various vulnerabilities.
Yes, just like any OS, there have been vulnerabilities that, potentially, could be used for malware purposes, but iOS has been available for over 4 years and still not one virus or malware breakout. If you knew anything about the way iOS works, and how apps get approved, installed and run, you would know why a virus is virtually impossible, and even a trojan is very unlikely.
Apple has a policy of never discussing security issues as they like to pretend that their products are totally immune, but they aren't.
Like lots of companies, Apple don't discuss security vulnerabilities BEFORE they are fixed, because that would be irresponsible and make it easier for hackers to exploit. Apple have never pretended their products are totally immune. Use your brain, if Apple thought their products were immune, why would they release regular security updates?
Companies like McAfee make money out of spreading FUD and making people believe they have to fork out lots of money for so-called "protection" that in most cases they don't need and doesn't work for unknown issues anyway. And now they're trying to prey on uninformed Windows users, who after years of being subjected to the real threat of viruses and malware now think they need the same for iOS devices.

  • Windows vs Mac Performance - Mac wins at the moment

I can tell you from firsthand experience that Lightroom is very useable on a Mac but significantly less so on WinXP.
I have a 1yr old XP laptop, 2GHz Core Duo, 2GB RAM, 128MB ATI X1400, 7200RPM hard drive with 60% free space where my library and photos reside (separate partition). My 8,000+ 1DMII .cr2 (mainly RAW) photos had to be imported without the create standard previews selected and rendered later. I also turn off write XMP when using LR as it slows down my system too much. My photos have between 5-10 keywords each from previous input using iView. The develop module works fine, but it is the library that is painful -- takes too long to try and rearrange my keywords into a hierarchy. In fact, any type of keywording or metadata changes makes my system hang for a few seconds. Forget about using Firewire 400 external hard drive, it degrades my LR performance even further. I can't imagine how people with older hardware configurations cope but I guess it's all relative to what you're used to.
I come from C1Pro, Rawshooter Premium and ACR but I bought and read Martin Evening's book and Luminous Landscape's video tutorials so consider myself fairly knowledgeable with respect to using LR. Both the book and video made LR seem like it was a smooth and very useable piece of software but I noticed both authors used Macs.
I now have a MacBookPro 15", 2.16GHz Core2Duo, 2GB RAM, 128MB X1600 BUT a 5400 RPM internal hard drive with 80% free. I run my photo library & database on a 5400 RPM USB 2.0 external hard drive and this setup smokes my WinXP setup! The library module with keywording, metadata changes etc is very smooth and the difference between running on two similar systems but with different OS has led me to believe that LR is currently much more refined on the Mac. I can even leave write XMP turned on and it doesn't take any significant performance hit. Scrolling through pages of thumbnails in grid view is fast.
My guess is that performance in Windows will catch up to Mac in future updates. I understand people's frustrations with Lightroom, as I share them, but it's the closest thing to a one-stop shop that I've seen and I am eagerly anticipating updates from Adobe.
In the meantime, my suggestion for those people who MUST use LR now and want the kind of performance they were used to in RawShooterPremium (as a frame of reference) is to use a Mac if they have that option. I'm not more loyal to one OS than another which is why I have both, but I believe in choosing the right tool for the job - same goes for my choice of camera equipment. To run LR smoothly, there's no doubt in my mind that Mac users have it better at the moment. Maybe that's why many LR authors are using Macs as well.
And not to sound critical of new users, but it wouldn't hurt to at least watch the Luminous Landscape Lightroom tutorials before posting questions as I believe it's the best $14.95 I've ever spent on educational material.

No doubt LR runs better on a full blown Mac at this point. But, suggestions that LR users move over to Mac hardware offer a costly solution to a problem that has more dimensions than OS considerations--given that available Ram is 2 gigs or more on either platform.
In order to see just what could be done to maximize LR performance, I put it on a insertable, boot drive with nothing but LR and basic WinXP Pro SP2 on it--no internet, no security overhead, nothing but basic OS and LR. It is noticeably faster than when used on a drive crowded with the usual software variety and load with all the, often redundant, calls on the system from background services, virus checkers, internet connections, etc, etc, etc.
But, it is simply not a fast app by either today's standards of what we expect or in comparison to other apps or combinations of apps that roughly equal what LR will do. The solution to that lies with Adobe engineers--not in throwing money at a different OS.
By the way, I am resonably confident that some serious reengineering will significantly improve LR, hopefully some large portion of that in the next release.
In the meantime, if you want a 20% or so boost, throw it on a small fast boot drive and get a quick change drive tray so you can alternate, or interchange, boot drives in about 10 seconds and not only get better performance out of LR--or Creative Suite, or whatever-- but get lightning fast boot itmes as well--that will cost you about $50--considerably cheaper than changing platforms.

  • Can I sign in/out of PSE PC and Mac? At the moment I only have PSE for PC.

If I have two PCs loaded with PSE I can use either one by signing Out/in between them.
Can I do this with two machines loaded with PES for PC on one and PSE for Mac loaded on the other?
    Many thanks

You are allowed to have two activated (signed in) copies of PSE. If you bought PSE in a box one can be a windows machine and one a mac. If you bought a download, about 95% of the time you're limited to one platform.

  • I have the most messed up iTunes/Mac ever at the moment.

Hello. This is going to take a while to explain, but thank you in advance if you are brace enough to tackle this problem.
    This is how it started..
I had an itunes library already and it was perfectly sorted etc. I don't know what was going on behind the scenes in terms of music folders etc, but in itunes it looked great. Then I took some music off my friends mac. Basically I wasn't thinking at the time so I should dragged and dropped whatever I wanted into myhardrive without creating a folder or anything (Like i said i wasn't thinking). Then when it came to putting the new (1000 songs approx) onto my laptop I stupidly just command + A'd my entire harddrive and copy and pasted it into itunes. So needless to say everything in my harddrive, like my past back ups of my mac etc, went into my itunes. It took hours to transfer over by which time i was starting to realise my mistake and sobbed whilst leaving it on over night to finish transferring.
Anyway thats the first catalyst in the construction of this mess..The plot, unfortunately, thickens.
My itunes obviously had ALOT of duplicates and through running a little experiment with a song i didnt care about losing i noticed that if you 'display duplicates' and delete all the duplicates this doesnt leave ANY copies of the song in itunes, which is beyond annoying and almost makes the feature redundant, for my needs anyway. I also had all the random mac 'sounds' and random things that shouldnt have been in itunes due to me copying EVERYTHING from my harddrive into poor itunes.
So I recruited some help from a friend. This was his plan: Delete everything in itunes, go back on time machine and back up itunes from there so i was back to the position i was in before transferring everything from the harddrive and then going back into my harddrive and importing the music in a more organised, less hasty manner. So he backed up my itunes as it was just incase something went wrong. This took a good half hour and he named the folder 'new old itunes'. Then he deleted the contents of itunes and went backin itunes to my last back up and restored itunes. However this is where things start to go more wrong. There was lots of stuff missing, as if the back up hadnt worked. Like the albums would be incomplete etc. So we went into the folder mentioned above 'new old itunes' and in there too there was music missing. If you clicked on an album it would be empty or only have 3 tracks when there should be like 15 or whatever.
Anyway he had to go, so i started doing some investigating and the music is still on my mac, just in random folders. so one particular song for instance wouldnt be in my itunes, wouldnt be in the back up, wouldnt be in the 'old new itunes' but if i searched for the track name in finder i would find it in other folders.
I know im getting a bit sketchy on the finer details but im not 100% what my friend did, this isnt his fault just itunes and mac acting funky but its even worse now. Anyway I seem to have multiple copies of lots of music. The music from the import that messed everything up is still on my mac in random places and needless to say, due to all these duplicates all over the place, my mac is full to the brim so i need to delete stuff but am unsure of what is safe to delete!
There is probably stuff i have missed out that if you suggest something to me i might reply saying that i have tried that and explain why it didnt work, please dont think im being rude. I've spent many hours trying to sort this and i think i have probably inadvertently messed it up more! I have delete the folder mentioned above, but it is still in my trash so could get it again, but as mentioned it is incomplete anyway.
If someone has any clue how to solve this i would be very very grateful, im so sad about it. I like having my itunes all nice!
Basically i want all the music, pre-mess up and all the new music on my harddrive to be in my itunes all nice and stuff.
Many thanks in advance and I'm sorry that its a long one and ive been lacking in grammar and punctuation alot.

Well, indeed that does not sound like a fun situation to be in. But, it is VERY good you are using Time Machine.
Let me explain, that there are two options when it comes to storing files in iTunes. When you import files, it will either leave the file in its original location on the hard drive and iTunes will know its location, or it will copy the file and store it in Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/Music/Artist_Name/Album_Name/, IF you have the option enabled titled "Keep iTunes Media folder organized."
I imagine you have it set to copy everything into the iTunes Media folder, which explains why your hard drive is filling up. Otherwise no extra space would have been taken up.
    Therefore, my recommendation is this:
Quit iTunes first. Then navigate to ~/Music in Finder, then Enter Time Machine. Restore the ENTIRE iTunes folder in that location from a previous backup that occurred BEFORE this whole thing happened. Depending on how much space you have left on your hard drive, it may be wise to first delete the entire current iTunes folder. The restore could take a long time, depending on how much data you have in iTunes.
This will guarantee you get back to a previous library, exactly as it was at that date and time. Yes, it may be a bit overkill but it is by far the simplest solution. Hope that works!

  • Is there internet explorer for mac?

Is there Internet Explorer for mac?

If the developers of the site insisted on using Microsoft-proprietary technology such that the site requires Internet Explorer, then your only solution will be to run Windows on your Mac, either via Boot Camp or one of the virtualization solutions (Parallels Desktop, VMWare Fusion, or VirtualBox) so you can run the Windows version of IE. There is no IE for Mac any more, hasn't been for years, and almost certainly is not coming back.
I run Windows on my system and it works fine; no "pollution" has occurred. In circumstances like this, it's often the only, or at least optimal, solution.

You'd have to ask that company that question. It seems odd to me as well, but they obviously have a business reason for their decision.

as has been said, you need no AV on your Mac. more info here: Mac Virus/Malware Info.
if, however, you exchange files with windows users on a regular basis, you might want to install ClamXav lest you pass an infected file on without realizing it.
