Is there a way copy old backups from my ext. HD to Time Capsule?

Is there a way to copy the TimeMachine files from my 250GB external hard drive to the TimeCapsule?
If so, what steps do I need to take to do this and insure that everything transfers flawlessly?
Thanks
Shimy

I wouldn't try it. I suggest starting with a new backup on the Time Capsule. The first back up should be performed by Ethernet cable.
If you don't need any of the files on the old drive following a successful Time Capsule back up, just erase the drive and its files and use it for data storage.

  • Is there a way to wireless backup my iPhone and iPad to Time Capsule?

I want to be able to wireless backup my Mac, iPhone and iPad... am I able to do this with Time Capsule?

Mac yes.. that is Time Machine built into every Mac since 10.5 OS
The iphone and ipad backup to itunes.. which then is backed up by Time Machine to the Time Capsule.
The idea of the iOS devices is to remove the file layer.. but you can download a file app for iOS which will allow you to copy files directly to the TC.

  • Can I copy old backups from an external HD to a new one? Thanks for your help.

I'm using time machine on an external hard disc (1 TB) for more than a year now. Now the eHD is nearly full and I would like to change to a bigger one. Is it possible to copy the backups from the old one to the new one? Thanks a lot for your help.

Hello Joe Gramm. Thank you for the link. This is what I was trying to do 2 days ago. I think the problem is, that the old eHD doesn't have the "Ignore ownership on this volume" button, while the new one has it. Therefore I tried to change the rights of access on everything (see above)... Trying to copy now brings me the following message: "Das Backup kann nicht kopiert werden, da beim Backup-Volume kein Eigentümer aktiviert ist." translatet something like: the backup could not be copied, because there is no owner activated on the backup-volume. Do you have any ideas how to change that or how to proceed? Many thanks for any input!

  • Unable to recover Mavericks via Time Machine on iMac (2011). I have one Time Machine backup from this week On new Time Capsule. I already attempted safe boot and NPRAM reset. Hard drive and permissions verified as ok.

Some more history - I'm not too techie so added everything in I thought might be significant!
    - Installed Mavericks on iMac in October 2013
    - experienced regular low memory issues - used Memory Clean app as a workaround
    - last week decided to upgrade installed memory from 4gb to 16gb. Faster loading but still running out of memory - just takes longer to do so.
    - also last week purchased 2gb Time Capsule (to back up 660gb on 1TB drive)
    - one successful Time Machine backup completed last weekend.
    - I decided to try and clear some space, tidy my folders, old music files,  delete duplicates etc (Not system files)
    - then tried out 'time machine restore' just to test it out. Deleted files and folders recovered ok using Time Machine menu (the one that looks like outta space)
    - yesterday, Avast Anti-Virus flagged virus detected (sorry, I didn't manage to capture details) and quarantined file, but I couldn't get any windows to respond so forced Mac to shutdown.
    - attempted regular reboot , system hanging on white/ apple symbol screen.
    -  attempted Safe reboot - reboot stalls at mess 'BootCacheControl: unable to open /var/db/BootCache.playlist no such file or directory.
(I don't know if this is significant)
    - attempt NPRAM reset, reboot hanging at Apple symbol still
    - attempted reboot into Disk Utility. HD drive verified ok. Permissions checked and Safari permissions fixed (only)
    - finally attempting restore from Time Machine Backup via Disk Utility. Stalls at 'select a backup source'. Menu is 'searching for Time Machine Backup....'
Nothing is listed, after a few mins machine just goes to sleep.
My Time Capsule and networks are all switched on. No idea what to try next!

Most of the problems like this that people report on this forum are due to bad "utilities" like Memory Clean and Avast.
Your Mac probably didn't have a virus. There has never been an OSX virus "in the wild". Third party antivirus software is of very dubious utility on Macs. Macs are not PCs. OSX has anti-malware protection built into it already.
Do you have any other third party "utilities" on your Mac, such as CleanMyMac or MacKeeper?
Is the RAM you installed the recommended type of RAM for your Mac?
Take a look at this page: Mac OS X: Gray screen appears during startup
But your OS may be damaged beyond repair, or beyond what disk utility is able to repair.
In that case you have a few options:
There is a small chance that a (reputable) third part utility like Techtool Pro 7  may be able to fix your OS.
Try to boot into single user mode (restart, hold down ⌘S until you see a black screen with white text) and repair your hard drive. Here's a reference with directions: Repair Your Hard Disk in Single User Mode | Everything Macintosh
bite the bullet, boot into the recovery partition or internet recovery, and erase your HD, reinstall Mavericks from scratch, and start over. Your documents are probably still on your Time Machine Backup. I wouldn't reinstall the documents via a migration- you don't want to reinstall bad system files along with your documents- but you could copy them one by one back to your internal HD. And most importantly- don't reinstall any third party "utilites" like Memory Clean or Avast (or any other third-party antivirus software, for that matter).

  • Can I transfer Time Machine Backup from WD Hard Drive to Time Capsule?

I have a Western Digital 500 Gb. Hard drive and recently purchased a 500 Gb.Time Capsule which, at the moment, am using only for the AirPort feature. I would like to use Time Capsule for my Time Machine backups and use the Western Digital drive as my Aperture Vault. Is there a way to move the Time Machine file from the WD drive to the Time Capsule drive so that I don't lose the old files? My Time Capsule is connected to my iMac via an Ethernet cable.

Unfortunately, no. Time Machine will backup to a local drive (e.g. via USB or FW HDD) using a folder structure. When backing up to a NAS (e.g. Time Capsule or USB HDD connected to a TC or Extreme), TM utilizes a sparsebundle. You cannot easily convert a folder structure to a sparsebundle. The best plan is to start a NEW backup to TC. Connecting via ethernet is highly recommended for the initial backup.
P.S. You can still access the old TM backups until such time that you want to reclaim the use of the HDD.

  • Move backup from external hard drive to time capsule

I am currently using Time Machine to an external hard drive connected by firewire. I have just purchased a time capsule - is there a way to move my existing backup to the time capsule so I do not lose my history?

Found the answer on another post after I posted.
    It is No you can't.

You can move the backup, but you will likely not be able to continue to backup to the file that you move to the Time Capsule.
Time Machine will be able to access the "old" backups on the Time Capsule if the file is enclosed in a special container called a sparsebundle.  This can get complicated, but details are available if you want them.
All things considered, this might be the same answer as "no" for most folks.

  • Can we backup from iPhone and iPad into time capsule?

Can we backup from iPhone and iPad photos and data into time capsule?

iOS devices like the iPhone and iPad back up only to iTunes on your computer or to iCloud. More details on backups here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1766
If you backup the iOS devices to iTunes, then iTunes in turn backs up to the Time Capsule using Time Machine.

  • Is there any way to access backups from another machine?

In an immense screwage, Apple has misplaced my macbook pro on the way to depot service.
Given the fact that I do expect them to eventually get it back to me, is there anyway to access the time machine backup for the missing machine?

  • Can you help I was having problems with my iPod so I restored it but I accidentally set it up as a new iPod is there any way to restore it from an old  backup when I right click iPod in iTunes there isn't one anyway to recover one or find it on computer

Hi can you help I was having problems with my iPod so I restored it but I
accidentally set it up as a new iPod is there any way to restore it from an old
backup when I right click iPod in iTunes there isn't one anyway to recover one
    or find it on computer

The following says how to restore from backup.
    iOS: How to back up
If you go to iTunes>Preferences>Devices you can see if you have an iTunes backup. You need one dated before or the exact time you started the restore.

  • Is there a way to import videos from old VHS tapes so that they can be later accessible to processing with imovie?

Is there any way to import videos from old VHS tapes so that thry can later be processed by imovie?

I recently got a new  iPhone, and after restoring all my stuff from my old iPhone via the iTunes restore thing, I had to put all my music on manually, instead of it being restored.
iTunes content is not included with your iPhone's backup - no music, movies, tv shows, podcasts, audio and print books, tones, and apps. All iTunes content must be transferred back to your iPhone when restoring. If you sync music with Sync Music selected under the Music tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes, music is transferred back to your iPhone from your iTunes library when syncing - syncing is followed after the iPhone is restored. If you manually manage music and videos with this selected under the Summary tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes, you must manually drag all music from your iTunes library back to your iPhone. Manually manage music means manually all the way.

    Yes.  You can set restrictions.

Is there a way to move files from one folder to another without copying and pasting and then going back to delete the original?  The cut and paste function is not available and there's no "move to" function.  Am I missing something?  It was so easy with Windows.

Drag the files, or press Option when pasting them; this accesses the Move To function.

My mom got the iPad mini for Christmas and she gave me her old iPad but she is still receiving all my messages on her mini. Is there a way to stop her from getting them?

If she is receiving your messages - then you must have somehow setup the iPad to use your iPhone number or your email address on her new iPad. How you did that is beyond me unless you set up her new Mini for her and used your Apple ID on it.
On her iPad got to - Settings>Messages>Send and Receive at>You can be reached by iMessages at>uncheck your phone number or email address of that is what is being used for the contact number.
