Is there a way of deleting old files when upgrading to Lion

So I'm finally thinking about switching over from 10.6.8 to 10.7.5.  Normally, when I upgrade to a newer OS, it's usually when a newer OS than that comes out.  ie. Mountain Lion is out, so Lion would have seen it's issues and has been updated as much as it can.  Basically, 10.7.5 is the best Lion will ever get.  Hence why I'm willing to upgrade.  I'll admit, I'm lazy when it comes to having to reinstall everything, but because old OS extensions and kernels don't get deleted when you upgrade to newer OS, I usually install a clean OS, which means I have to reinstall all my apps.  I'm wondering if there's a way for all older OS system files that are not necessary anymore, to be deleted upon upgrading.  Or will Apple ever design an upgrade that will do so.

Buy Lion, erase your disk and install.

  • Is there any way to delete duplicate files en mas within the new itunes program?

I've just installed the new itunes program on my laptop. I used the scan for media option to find music. Problem is almost every entry and there's several hundred of them is duplicated and in some cases triplicated within the itunes media library.
Question ... Is there any way to delete duplicated files en mas withing the itunes library folder?
Please don't tell me that I'm going to have to do it individually as that may take days.
    Thanks

Apple's official advice on duplicates is here... HT2905: How to find and remove duplicate items in your iTunes library. It is a manual process and the article fails to explain some of the potential pitfalls such as lost ratings and playlist membership.
Use Shift > View > Show Exact Duplicate Items to display duplicates as this is normally a more useful selection. You need to manually select all but one of each group to remove. Sorting the list by Date Added may make it easier to select the appropriate tracks, however this works best when performed immediately after the dupes have been created.  If you have multiple entries in iTunes connected to the same file on the hard drive then don't send to the recycle bin.
Use my DeDuper script if you're not sure, don't want to do it by hand, or want to preserve ratings, play counts and playlist membership. See this thread for background, this post for detailed instructions, and please take note of the warning
to backup your library before deduping.
(If you don't see the menu bar press ALT to show it temporarily or CTRL+B to keep it displayed.)
The most recent version of the script can tidy dead links as long as there is at least one live duplicate to merge stats and playlist membership to and should cope sensibly when the same file has been added via multiple paths.

  • Is there a way to open a file when it says it needs DMR?

Is there a way to open a file when it says it needs DMR?

Maybe you can let her play on your computer where it may be easier to restrict what she can do, provided there's an OS X equivalent. Of course supervision is probably the safest solution until she is old enough to understand she shouldn't do anything that's not permitted. But then she'd probably be old enough not to need to learn her ABSs.

  • Is there a way to delete an app when you can't see the app's icon?

Is there a way to delete an app when you can't see the app's icon? I have so many apps that they don't all show up on the existing screens. I know it can be done by connecting to a computer and using iTunes, but I'm on the road away from my Mac.

I tried that and instead of showing me the inaccessible screens, it just shortens the number of available screens. Then if I reset the home screen in preferences it removes the folders I created and I'm back to square one.

  • Do i lose files when upgrading to Lion?

I am preparing to upgrade to Lion fromsnowleapard, i don't have a back up, but my question is:
Do I lose files when upgrading to Lion? I have microsoft office for MAC 2011 installed and files for garageband which I realy don't want to loose!

If you have files you don't want to lose, you should back up your system regardless of upgrading or not.  Buy an external drive and clone your system or use Time Machine to back it up.
The normal Lion upgrade won't delete your data if things go correctly, any hiccups and you'll need that backup.

  • Is there a way to delete old emails in icloud all at once instead of 6 at a time?

Is there a way to delete all the old emails in icloud with one click of a button instead of 6 at a time?

If it's an iCloud email account, go to icloud.com from your computer.  Then you can select email by clicking the first, then shift-clicking that last and pressing your delete key.  Don't try to delete more than about 500 at a time or it will probably hang.
If it's a different email provider, go to their webmail site and do the same thing.

  • Is there a way to delete Windows files on reboot?

I'm interested in creating an installer similar to apt-get on Linux. The idea is it will update packages when new ones become available, resolve dependecies, etc. The problem is under Windows if a file is locked in memory you can't touch it so I would need to perform some operations before the system totally boots. I've seen some programs that allow you to delete files on reboot. What I'm wondering is how can I do this? I'm aware this probably isn't a pure Java feature. Also I did hear that all you need to do is add the text files into a certain text file Windows has and Windows will do it and that's how a lot of these programs work. Any help?

No, I'm not a cracker. The goal of this project is to create my own package system similar to deb or rpm under Linux. Both package systems will not let you install a package unless you have the required dependencies. They also make it easy to add/update/remote packages on the system without breaking it. By themselves they're OK but not much better than a Windows msi package. However tools like apt-get and yum will allow you to create repositories of packages on a local or remote machine. Typing apt-get install firefox for example will go out and get the most recent version of Firefox from the repositories and install it along with any other packages it would need to operate. More importantly you can type apt-get Update and install all packages on a system that are needed. Think about it like this you download Firefox. Run InstallRite against it to install it. InstallRite tells you any files which are added/updated/deleted, registry settings added/updated/deleted, etc. You turn it into a package in your respository. You have all the clients on the network check that server nightly for updates. Every system on the network gets patched. Most people have quite a few packages installed on a system and they might never check for security updates, etc. This way every package gets updated almost to the day a new update becomes available. If I write it and it becomes good more people might start packaging for it.

  • I have put all the education apps in one file on my iPad is there a way to lock that file when I open it so that my niece can not leave that file

I have put all the education apps in one file and would like to be able to lock it when it is opened to keep my niece from going other places, does anyone know if this can be done and if so how?

  • Is There a Way To Restore System Files When They Have Been Overwritten As PDF Files?

A friend of mine installed the last Acrobat update last week on her Windows 7 system.  Everything seemed fine until she tried to view the Manual for her FujiFlilm Camera.  All of a sudden all of her System Files were overwritten as PDF files, her Security software was gone, and she could no longer get on the internet.  When she attempted to restore to a previous version on her computer, she was unable to do it.  Is there anyway of restoring her system without losing everything?  And has anyone had this problem?  I have also received this update but have not downloaded it for fear I too may experience the loss of everything.

I'm not sure if this is what you were looking for, but the message came from Adboe Reader saying the latest update was available, so she clicked on it to download and install.
The Fujifilm Manual came on a CD with the camera.  That was the first time she utilized the PDF function after downloading the update.
    Does that help you?

  • Delete old files on my video ipod

I am a new ipod user and have a video ipod. I have been downloading podcasts to my ipod for a week or so. Even though in my itunes I keep only the newest episodes, my ipod retains all previous episodes. However, when I go to my ipod in the source list, all the podcast items are de-highlighted and I can not select or delete.
Can someone point me to a way to delete old files on my ipod?
    Thanks!

    Try this:
In iTunes click on "Podcast", you don't need to have your iPod connected.
Highlight the file you want to delete and press the DELETE key on your keyboard. It will ask if you want to delete the file. If you want to just remove it from your iPod and want to keep the original file on your computer select "Keep Files". If you want to remove from both, select "Move to crcycle bin". This is for PC. If you use a Mac the wording might be slightly different but the principle should be the same.
When you're all done deleting, connect your iPod and the podcasts will be automatically removed from your iPod.
    Hope it helps.

  • How do I get Time Machine to delete old files?

On threads for earlier operating systems I've seen similar questions, and it seems Apple hasn't resolved the problem that although Time Machine says it will delete old files when the disc is full, it doesn't do it, even though my hard drive has only ~300 GB of files on it and my external hard drive has 1.5 T, it does nothing to delete old files automatically.  This hasn't always been the case.  The first few entries were deleted awhile back, freeing space, but that has stopped happening.  Any suggestions?  Do I have to start with a fresh external hard drive?

    ringoiphone wrote:
Thanks.  Although the reset did nothing, by deleting enough old backups (a VERY slow process) I could get it to free enough space for another backup.  It's not clear to me why it cannot do this automatically.
Time Machine will delete old backups, if it can.  So something must be wrong.  See #C4 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
If nothing there helps, a clue may be lurking in your logs.  Use the widget in #A1 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting to display the backup messages from your logs.  Locate the backup in question, then copy and post all the messages here.

Most likely you have Office 2004 which are PPC-only applications and will not work in Lion. Upgrade to Office 2011. Other alternatives are:
Apple's iWork suite (Pages, Numbers, and Keynote.)
Open Office (Office 2007-like suite compatible with OS X.)
    NeoOffice (similar to Open Office.)
LibreOffice (a new direction for the Open Office suite.)
