Is there a way to audit Safari Browser history, searches, activity?

I am not new to technology on the PC/Windows side of things.  However, I am fairly new to Apple products and I am finding them very easy to set up and use which - nice work Apple!  But I am finding that the level granularity and management in the OS is missing.  I have two children who use our family-owned iPads for both school and personal.  Other than installing a 3rd party browser (which was tried several times and met with an awful experience for both the user and the parent) or locking down the age-rating (which simply blocked a lot of relevant sites) - I could find no way to simply monitor my children's activities using Safari.
I do not want to lock down anything, I simply want to see what they're searching for and viewing and doing on Safari so I can ascertain whether to strike up a well-time conversation around whatever subject I felt necessary.  I realize i can check the history but that is easily cleared.
Is what i'm looking for possible?  I know with Microsoft Family Safety you can do this insanely easily for Internet Explorer and it gets very granular.  Is this possible with Apple Safari?
If this is not possible, I would say this is a gigantic miss for Apple.  With kids being asked to use iPads for their schoolwork and using it at home all the time, where are the family safety controls that parents can put in place to monitor activity (not lock it down)?
thanks for any guidance in advance.

For Safari history tap the bookmark icon( open book to the right of the search field). When it opens tap history.

Is there a way to open a browser and it "starts" with opening many tabs?
    e.g. I open a browser - and it starts on 3 or 4 tabs?

Leave them open when you shuit Safari down. It doesn't have a home page function.
You might check the app store for some alternate browsers. I beleive there a few that will do this.

  • Is there a way to boost Safari? Snow Leopard 10.6.8, Safari 5.1.7 is very slow, almost dead. Thank you.

Is there a way to boost Safari? I'm using Snow Leopard 10.6.8, Safari 5.1.7 which has become very slow, almost dead. Many thanks!

If Safari is getting very slow:
(Presumably you regularly empty your Safari cache by deleting the following file:
    Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/cache.db
    and clear your History)
Adding Open DNS codes to your Network Preferences, should give good results in terms of speed-up as well as added security, (including anti-phishing and redirects) (Full information about Open DNS is here: http://www.opendns.com/home/nobloat ) and further independent information can be read here:
    http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-57338784-263/free-dnscrypt-tool-enhances-ma c-web-security/?tag=mncol;txt
    and here:
    http://www.macworld.com/article/1146064/troubleshootdns.html?t=234
If you are using a single computer: Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu, and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' add the following two numbers:
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
(You can also enter them if you click on Advanced and then DNS)
Sometimes reversing the order of the DNS numbers can be beneficial in cases where there is a long delay before web pages start to load, and then suddenly load at normal speed:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2296
If your computer is part of a network:please refer to this page: http://www.opendns.com/start/best_practices/#your_network and follow the advice given.
If you use a Router, make sure it has the latest firmware installed.
One reason for a slowness in page loading may be the 'DNS Pre-fetching' feature of Safari 5.x as is described here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3408?viewlocale=en_US
You can cancel DNS pre-fetching by going to Terminal and typing:
defaults write com.apple.safari WebKitDNSPrefetchingEnabled -boolean false
You have to restart Safari for it to take effect.
If Safari seems to hang for ages:
If you have a lot of tabs open and/or a lot of pages running Flash, Safari can sometimes 'hang', requiring a restart of Safari. This can often be inconvenient, and as it is rarely Safari itself that is hanging but merely one of its plug-ins, usually Flash, there is a way using Terminal to restart the plug-ins (without restarting Safari and losing your tabs) by quitting the WebPluginHost process:
Open the Terminal from the Utilities folder in /Applications and type
    killall -9 WebKitPluginHost
Note that this command kills all Safari plug-ins, not just Flash. All plug-ins should start back up when you reload the page.
Then go back to Safari and refresh any pages that were using the Flash plug-in. This also fixes the Beachball of Death. Try this whenever Safari gets slow or freezes. The later versions of Flash 10.1 onwards appear to have improved the situation somewhat, but haven't completed eliminated it.
For this and other reasons Apple switched their websites to HTML5 in January 2011:
    http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/11/01/26/apple_revamps_its_public_website_u sing_html5.html
For Snow Leopard/Lion users this should also be read:

Is there a way to view Safari full screen in Leopard without auto-hiding the dock? I've already tried searching the forums but could not find much on it or an answer to if it can be done or not. Thanks for any help.

You can open the Code Inspector Window to have the code completely separate from the Design/Document window. You can also then move the CI window to a separate monitor if you like.
Window > Code Inspector or F10

I Keep getting kicked out of Safari when online. Is there a way to reinstall Safari?

    Reset the device:
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
If that doesn't help, tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings
If that doesn't help, tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings
You will have to re enter your Wi-Fi password.
No data is lost due to a reset.

  • Is there some way to keep Safari from opening a new tab when clicking on a link?

When one clicks on a link on a page in Safari a new tab is opened. This is fine if the link is to a different site. However, it is annoying when navigating through the pages of a single site such as is required, for example, in on-line banking. Firefox seems to be smarter in this regard, opening a tew tab in the former case but not in the latter. Is there some way to keep Safari from opening a new tab each time?

Safari Preferences > Tabs (in Safari 7)
There is an option there for specifying how new pages open

  • Is there a way too lock the iphone history on safari

my history keeps getting erased and i dont know whos doing it i wanna know if theres a way to lock the clear history button

    No.
Unless you or someone else using the phone is clearing the history, resting data, or restoring the phone, the Safari history doesn't get deleted. If someone else may be doing this, you can enable a restriction on Safari:
    Settings > General > Restrictions > Enable Restrictions > Safari > On

Is there a way to get Safari NOT to open previous windows on restart?

When you launch Safari, hold the SHIFT key.
Alternatively, disable the window restore feature in Sys Prefs > General: "Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps," or uncheck the box for restoring windows after restart in the restart pop-up box.

I want to be able to see the history when my kids use the computer. Is there a way to lock private browsing so that my kids can not have this option?

There is no way to reliably disable private browsing or keep a user from deleting history. Use a program such as netnanny to keep track of history and sites visited.

  • No safari browsing history

I show no safari browsing history on my iPad 2. Does anyone know why?

Maybe you have private browsing enabled. Tap the + sign in the upper right hand side of the Safari toolbar. That opens a new tab. Look for the word Private in the lower left part of the screen. Tap the word Private to disable Private browsing and return to normal browsing.
One easy way to know if private browsing is enabled is that the Safari app will be black with white letters instead of white with black letters.
