Just downloaded an episode of the Night Stalker (mostly out of curiosity to see how it would look). Since I don't have an iPod video player, I was hoping I would be able to burn the QuickTime video to a dvd and watch it on my bigger screen tv rather than at the computer. Apparently, the TV Shows you download for $1.99 are copy protected the same as the music you buy in the iTunes store, I am able to burn the music to CDs and play them on my CD player. I can't imagine why I shouldn't be able to burn the QuickTime video using Toast or iDVD so I can watch it at the tv. After all, it isn't such great quality that it is a threat to piracy. And it is a TV show that I can record when it is on--so what's the deal?

A few things to consider. The TV shows, vieos, etc on iTunes are meant for one purpose - the video iPod. They are encoded in H.264 at 320x240 which means they need to scale up to 640x480 to be viewed on your TV set, thus quality loss. Also, H.264 encoded videos require more computing power, I see a lot of people on these threads complaining about choppy playback, well they are on slower systems and that is why.
I think Apple may have mislead people into thinking these shows are for your pc or tv screen, and while they do look OK, they are only going to look perfect on the iPod since that is what they were encoded for. So taking an episode of a tv show from iTunes and trying to watch it on your TV is not going to look very good anyway.

1). Connect your iPod to your computer. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod.
2). When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that will let you use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default: Managing content manually on iPod and iPhone
3). Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. There are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files (purchased and non purchased) and playlists from your iPod. I use Senuti but have a look at the web pages and documentation for the others too. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here (you'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos and games as well):

There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
4). Keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync.
5). I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay: Back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive

I ran the diagnostics and this is what came up at the end. hopefully you can help me because I really want to back up music that I have bought because I have already lost music and it was my fault cause i didn't back anything up, and because itunes has been messing up a lot i want to make sure i don't lose any more money.

When I travel for business I like to try to just bring my iPad and no laptop. I need to be able to project some slides (could be .ppt or .pdf). I have Chromecast installed and working on the TV. I also have the latest "free" version of Powerpoint on my iPad. I do not pay for the MS360 subscription at this time - I only use it to view slides as needed and edit on laptop. Series 3 iPad with latest software.
1) Is there a way to project a slide show to a projector or TV using Chromecast in conjunction with either Dropbox or Powerpoint, on the iPad?

Best way to burn a DVD+R DL disc?

I was wondering what everyone thought was the best way to burn a DVD+R DL disc.
This is how i do it and let me know if you have better results doing it a different way.
1. Never burn from DVD SP, always use Toast instead.
2. Select All Regions (including #7) in DVD SP
3. Build/Format, then select Harddrive, .img file
4. Use Toast and select Copy, then Image File.
1. I never burn in DVD SP because it uses the fastest write speed that your disc/burner does and this seems to have issues.
2&3. I always select All Region because DVD SP by default doesn't select #7 (no clue to why that is) and if you got to harddrive using .img, then that is CMF format and CMF needs all region (RCM Value of 0). Otherwise DVD SP will have different region codes in the MAIN.DAT vs. the CONTROL.DAT. 0 and possibly 64 or 40.
4. With Toast you can set the write speed. I just use 2X and this takes 40 minutes or so for a full DVD+R DL disc.
But..
Is this the best way?
Or is the DVD-ROM (UDF) option a better way?
Any suggestions?

Not that this really helps you solve the dvdsp thing but if they are regular clients maybe buy a cheap(ish) dvd player that plays your discs fine and send them it. Explain the ±DL issues. Say the authoring is fine but the ±DL media thing is a mine field so here is a player so proofing goes smoother in the future.
If Toast is working better then send a media input form with the proof stating where the LB will be on the master etc.
I'd like to hear anything anyone else has to say but I'm sure we're aware of most of the options already.
FWIW, if you're running 10.4.x you can type drutil info in Terminal and hit enter to see what types of media the attached drives can burn,

Under Purchased: TV Shows - There is a "Recent" Option and an "All TV Shows" option and yet both are organized by most recent first. Is there a way to have "All TV Shows" alphbetical? Under Purchased Movies that is how they are organized, so why not TV Shows?

Organising movies and TV shows is much less intuitive on the Apple TV 2 than it was on the Apple TV. TV shows argue organised alphabetically though, however you can't reorganise tihem manually.

Is there a way to burn DVDs at speeds lower than 4x?

Hi to everybody. I need to burn DVDs at speeds lower than 4x (preferably 1x) but both Burn and LiquidCD (together with Disk Utility) are unable to. I believe that this depends on the fact that alle these utilities rely on Apple's optical Burning Framework. Is there a way to get rid of this problem without needing to buy Toast or Disco (I very rarely burn CDs and an expense in this direction wouldn't be justifeied).

Insert a blank disc (it's not going to write, so the disc won't be wasted) then look in the "Disc Burning" section of System Profiler (Utilities folder). It will show the supported burning speeds for that disc in that drive. With my Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-115D and a Verbatim DVD-R 16X disc, it shows:
Write Speeds: 4x, 6x, 8x, 12x, 16x, 20x
These speeds are determined by the drive and brand of disc, and cannot be changed by software. If you tried to run a drive at a slower speed, the drive's servo might not be able to keep the rotation smooth enough (so the dots are burned evenly spaced) without adding a heavy flywheel, and the laser would need to produce longer pulses at lower intensity. Laser diodes may quit when the power is reduced too much. For this drive, it must be the minimum power that laser will operate at, since the drive will burn DVD-RW discs at 1x or 2x. The RW must need more energy to burn each dot, so the laser power does not have to be reduced too much.
Why do you need to burn at slower speeds?
If you don't want to use DVD-RW, you may be able to find some older, lower speed DVD-Rs

I need to submit a DVD to a professional organization for review. I need it to have NO theme. Just play. Not a Quicktime movie. It has to be a DVD but no cutesy themes. Is there a way to either have a black screen or no theme at all?

How to create a DVD without menu (there are several options):
1. Easy: Drop your iMovie in the autoplay box in iDVD's Map View, then set your autoplay item (your movie) to loop continously. Disadvantage: The DVD plays until you hit stop on the remote
2. Still easy: If you don't want your (autoplay) movie to loop, you can create a black theme"by replacing the background of a static theme with a black background and no content in the dropzone (text needs to be black as well). Disadvantage: The menu is still there and will play after the movie. You don't see it, but your disc keeps spinning in the player.
3. Still quite easy but takes more time: Export the iMovie to DV tape, and then re-import using One-Step DVD.
Disadvantage: One-Step DVD creation has been known to be not 100% reliable.
3. Easy enough but needs 3rd party software: Toast lets you burn your iMovie to DVD without menu - just un-check the appropriate check box. Disadvantage: you'll need to spend some extra $$ for the software. In Toast, you just drop the iMovie project on the Window and click Burn.
4. The "hard way": Postproduction with myDVDedit (freeware)
Tools necessary: myDVDedit ( http://www.mydvdedit.com )
• create a disc image of your iDVD project, then double-click to mount it.
• Extract the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders to a location of your choice. select the VIDEO_TS folder and hit Cmd + I to open the Inspector window
• Set permissions to "read & write" and include all enclosed items; Ignore the warning.
• Open the VIDEO_TS folder with myDVDedit. You'll find all items enclosed in your DVD in the left hand panel.
• Select the menu (usually named VTS Menu) and delete it
• Choose from the menu File > Test with DVD Player to see if your DVD behaves as planned.If it works save and close myDVDedit.
• Before burning the folders to Video DVD, set permissions back to "read only", then create a disc image burnable with Disc Utility from a VIDEO_TS folder using Laine D. Lee's DVD Imager:

I am using Premiere Elements 10 to create home movies and burn them to blu-ray discs. I want all scenes to show the date the scene was shot in the lower right hand corner, at all times. Is there an easy way to do this automatically, or do I have to go to each clip and custom make a title? The dates are all placed in the exif info by the camera I am using. Thanks for any help!

Is there a way to adjust the new IOS7 calendar DAY VIEW so you just see the list of events for the day; so you don't have to scroll down all the hours of day? (want it back the old way!) Can it be adjusted?
Its really annoying the current way; when you glance at your phone you don't see all the appointments for the day, have to scroll up and down, and I end up missing things and its time consuming. Same annoying thing in WEEKLY VIEW. Is there a way to change that in preferences or something?

Hi, I am looking for a way to turn off the "Show All" option in the View/Columns menu. Even though you can hide columns from this menu using featuresOff="columnsMenuItem:col1,col20" if a user selects the "Show All" option, it will show the columns you're trying to hide from their their view (programatically controlled). I don't want to remove the whole View menu, because it has options I need to give the user. I've read the Oracle doc on af:panelCollection, but it does not reference the "Show All" in the featuresOff section.
