Is there a way to compress media and project files into something small

I have a 2TB hard disk where all my FCP files - project files, media files and rendered files are stored.
I am not sure I will reopen those projects but still to be onthe safer side I do not want to delete them
but keep the compresed so that in case I need to open them some later time, I can open the project and do the edits.
So is there a way to compress the files and store that I can reuse in a later stage but still take less space now.

You can delete all the render files, since they can recreated when needed.
And you can also delete the optimized or proxy media, if you have any, for the same reason.
I doubt that you'd get much space back by using compression, since video files are already pretty much compressed.

hi I am trying to do a project of putting a keynote saved as a quicktime into garageband and adding audio and then compressing it via Share ...sent to itunes etc. It does get smaller.
But Are there any experts out there on putting a keynote with narration into garageband. I loose all of the timing control when I send it to quicktime. It seems like a LOT of steps.
Also, putting a narration into keynote is so long. Power Point just lets you record the narration on each slide. So I was putting it into garageband and trying to add the narration podcast style. Any suggestions.

Got a wp doc. made back in 1989 - 90 with a Mac SEII, about 70 pages long. Is there any way to translate this and get it into Pages on my new Mac without owning old machines and operating systems to see what i wrote as the Berlin wall was coming down?

I've got a document , some 70 pages long that was made back in the late '80's with Pagemaker on an SEII mac. The docs are on 2 floppies, but I can't open them, because I can't find any application that can read the files. I've got other documents that go back to 1984, when I bought my first Mac, that I can't open, either. I'd like to be able to get these files into Pages and send them out to family once again. Any recommendations?

No other application can open PageMaker files, only PageMaker. You'd need a copy of PageMaker (and license) and a Mac of ancient vintage, one with a floppy drive. The ancient Mac is needed not just to read the floppied but to run PageMaker which won't run on modern Macs.
Frankly, if you have a paper copy, scan it and start from that!

Good way to initialize clusters and parse files into them

I'm writing a small application to open some sonar .xtf files and look at their data. The format is published and I have done a crude job of building a cluster and initializing it...then reading the file header and parsing it into the cluster so I can use the data in the headers to read the data packets that are stored next. Here is an example of how I have done one of the parsing jobs...very crudely,
Read the header binary in (length defined)
Build the cluster by creating variables from the input file...and then loading the file data in the appropriate cluster variables after casting and ordering the bytes properly...
Surely this is not the best way to do this...perhaps loops controlled by the number of bytes in parameter to be parsed...???
I'm looking for a smart strategy for looking at the definition document, which defines the name of the variable, where the variable appears in the header (byte offset), how many bytes it is made up of....and translating that information into the cluster definition efficiently...
Ideas would be appreciated....

There may be a way to do this using "Flatten to String" and "Unflatten from String".
One issue is that it looks like your strings are fixed length, while LabVIEW uses variable length strings where the string length is preprended to the string bytes when the data is flattened. But I think if you yourself insert the bytes 16 and 53 into the string data you read from the file at the appropriate places, you can get LabVIEW to read the data and convert it to your cluster.
Read the data as a string.
Insert the bytes listed above at the correct places.
Pass that through the Unflatten from string to convert that string data to a cluster. You define the cluster by feeding a constant that defines the datatype into the function.
I think if your binary files as a not too complicated structure, and you define your data types for each element of the cluster precisely, you can get this to work.

Is there a way to view, access and process files on a unix server from APEX

Hello all,
We are looking at retrieving (text)documents that are uploaded to a Unix server. The server is seperate from the server that hosts APEX. Would anyone know how to do this or point me to some examples?

If you followed the instructions in the manual you would have configured Contacts to sync to an app on your computer such as Outlook or Address Book. Then all you would have to do is set the new phone to sync with the same app on the computer. If you didn't do this you are probably out of luck, although there are some 3rd party apps that can extract data from the backup if it is not encrypted.

Try this. With the power on, unplug the unit from the wall. Wait 10 minutes and now plug the unit back into the wall outlet. Do not use a power strip or surge protector.

I am converting a CD-ROM course to an online format with that software.
In the majority of slides created I have used the Import Audio function to insert a primary audio file containing important curriculum information.
This file typically activates the moment you open the slide.
So far so good.
However, in many slides I also need to insert some secondary audio files.
While the Import Audio function permits me to splice several files into one, this isn't what I want.
Instead, I need to insert one or more additional audio files that can be activated independently via separate buttons on a given slide.
I can in fact do this with the Insert Button function, but in the process a Windows Media Player file opens when I convert the project into HTML.
My question:
Is there some way I can insert and play these additional audio files, accessible via separate buttons, without creating and opening a Windows Media Player file?

It is hard to assess the situation without sitting at your computer and having a look myself. First, if you're seeing space savings I doubt all your files are a compressed format. Frequently if you try compressing a compressed format file such as AAC (don't confuse with AIFF) you will actually find the file gets larger because there is overhead to compression and if it cannot compress any more then you end up just adding overhead on top of no savings. Second, normally if you zip the iTunes library it would basically make it inaccessible to iTunes and iTunes would make you a brand new library or at least flag all your tracks as missing (as you are seeing ain part).
I don't know what computer you are running, which operating system, which version of iTunes. Unless they have done something radical in Lion in terms of letting you zip your iTunes folder and still have it functional, you either didn't zip the whole thing, or... I don't know. One scenario is that somehow your media have been split up and you have them in several locations. One isn't really part of your library except for 80 tracks, so when you compressed it (and I still am puzzled by the compression unless it was AIFF files you were no longer using), it didn't really make much difference to the playability. Then you have an untouched library elsewhere.
Use the Reveal In Finder command to see where some of those problem files are located vs. where the playable files are located.

Assuming you do not have access to the "original" video/project and the YouTube video is the only copy, there is a method. Try "YouTube Downloader" which is a free software that allows you to download clips from YouTube as .mp4 files. You can then edit with Premiere, and re-encode again for upload to YouTube. Just keep in mind that you are re-compressing the video so there will be some quality loss. The better the quality of the original, the better the copy will hold up.

Is there a way to compress more than one project at a time in Compressor?

I've been using Compressor for a while and love it, but was wondering if there's a way to use it to compress file from multiple projects that are open in Final Cut? Right now, when I select the "export to Compressor" in Final Cut, Final Cut becomes essentially "unavailable" for use and I get a window that's called "Compressor Processing" that's counting off the frames in the file as Compressor encodes it. If I have other projects open in Final Cut, I can't access or use them until processing in Compressor is done.
Anyone know if there's a way to put a project file into Compressor and then another one from a different file?

Unfortunately, you understood me correctly. I was trying to see if there was a way to batch process multiple project files all in one shot with Batch Monitor. So basically the answer is "no" and I'd have to export the project files individually into separate QT files, and then drop each of those into Compressor? That really stinks. Just another time-wasting step that could be avoided with some basic software re-programming.
What's the point of having Compressor be able to interface directly with Final Cut if it can't batch multiple projects in the same batch?

Is there a way to run Motion and Final Cut Pro from the same Final Cut Studio license on separate machines? We hadn't realised when we bought Final Cut Studio that it wouldn't allow this. Our editor doesn't use motion, and while I mainly use After Effects on our motion graphics machine, I was wanting to try using motion for some particle effects. Unfortunately, it won't let me open it while Final Cut is running on our editor's machine. I can understand not letting two copies of same application run under the same serial number at the same time, but it would be nice to be able to use both programs that we own concurrently. At very least it would be good to warn you that this isn't possible in the product description, not in some fine print license agreement once you have already bought the software.

I do not know of any software, in any platform that can operate from the same license over a network simultaneously.This is the exact reason for the existence of Volume Licensing. If for example a project ran in each one of the included applications from different sources that were not an active network, I doubt you would have a problem.Like, doing a project at work and geting the outcome with the Powerbook at home...Sorta!
