Is there a way to "consolidate" your iPhoto library? (like in iTunes)

I've set iPhoto to not copy files to the library I lack the room in my internal hdd. But now I've learned that you can drag the iPhoto library to an external hdd and redirect iPhoto to the new location. Now I want to copy all my photos to the new iPhoto directory on the external hdd. How can I "consolidate" my library, just like in iTunes, and have the original photos copy over there?

Actually, you'll have to start over and create a new library in the location you want to keep it and import your source files into it. If you've invested a lot of effort in keywords and comments, then you can export your photos by Event to folder titled for that event. Once you have all of your photos exported, delete the old library and source files. Then create a new library and import those folders of exported files. This will preserve the keywords, comments, titles and events. Once you have your photos in your new library you can delete those folders of exported photos.
Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Is there a way to undo an iphoto library import?

I thought that I had lost my iphoto library... so I did a drag and drop of what I thought was the most recent backup to different desktop iphoto.  I thought that the 2 libraries would merge so that I could see if the new library was the correct backup, it wasn't the correct backup, they didn't merge, so now I have lost my original library.  Is there a way to undo this import?

I think there's a way to recover your original photos and video files:
1 - copy the Masters (iPhoto 11) or Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) to the Desktop.
2 - open the folder and type Command+F (find).
3 - select Kind is Image and File Size is less than 50 KB.
4 - in the search results window will be all of the very small  thumbnail files.
5 - select all of the files and drag them to the Trash.
6 - reset the file size to 100 KB.
7 - check some of the photos to make sure that none are the original file even though they may be very small.
8 - reset the File size again to a size, maybe to 200 KB, that you are sure will not include any of your original files. If you think you might have files less than say 200 KB that would be your original files you will have to check each file found in the search and exclude from the drag to the Trash.
9 - select them all and drag to the Trash.
Now that should leave you with all the original files greater that the final size you used for your search AND all of your video files.
Now create a new iPhoto library and drag the Masters folder into it.  That will import all of your files and keep the Events that you had in your original library.
HOWEVER, if you're running iPhoto 8 (09) you will have to import each subfolder inside the Original folder to get the same Events.  If you drag the Original folder into the new library window they will be imported into one large event.

  • Is there a way to update your aperture library manually?

I have my an aperture library on an external hardrive for storing old pictures from my past computer. The library on the external hard drive was used on version 3.2.4 and I seemed to have forgotten that when I upgraded my aperture to 3.3 recently, only converting the library stored on my computer. Now I am getting a message that my old external hardrive file cannot be imported because it is not the correct version, but I have no knowledge of how to upgrade it to 3.3. Is there any way to manually (or to be able to go back) and upgrade my 3.2.4 library version?
    -Matt

Quit Aperture and double-click the library you want upgraded. Aperture will open and upgrade it. Once you've upgraded it you can import it into your other library.

  • Is there a way to get ipod songs/library onto new itunes library

i got a new empty itunes library is there a way to put all my stuff from my ipod to this library????

It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer for just such an occasion.
Use your backup copy to put everything back.
If for some reason you have failed to maintain a backup copy ( not good), then you can transfer itunes purchases from your ipod.  Without syncing:  File>Transfer Purchases

  • Is there a way of syncing your Music Library on iPhone 4 to different computers?

I have synced my iphone library to a computer and I want to sync it to another computer of mine how can I do that??

    Sync iPod/iPad/iPhone with two computers
Although it isn't possible to sync an Apple device with two different libraries it is possible to sync with the same logical library from multiple computers. Each library has an internal ID and when iTunes connects to your iPod/iPad/iPhone it compares the local ID with the one the device normally syncs with. If they are the same you can go ahead and sync...
I have my library cloned to a small 1Tb USB drive which I can take between home & work. At either location I use SyncToy 2.1 to update the local copy with the external drive. Mac users should be able to find similar tools. I can open either of the local libraries or the one on the external drive and update the media content of my iPhone. The slight exception is Photos which normally connects to a specific folder on a specific machine, although that can easily be remapped to the current library if you create a "Photos" folder inside the iTunes Media folder so that syncing the iTunes folders keeps this up to date as well. I periodically sweep my library for new files & orphans with iTunes Folder Watch just in case I make changes at one location but then overwrite the library with a newer copy from the other. Again Mac users should be able to find similar tools.
As long as your media is organised within an iTunes Music or Tunes Media folder, in turn held inside the main iTunes folder that has your library files (whether or not you let iTunes keep the media folder organised) each library can access items at the same relative path from the library folder so the library can be at different drives/paths on different machines. This solution ensures I always have adequate backups of my library and I can update my devices whenever I can connect to the same build of iTunes.
When working with an iPhone earlier builds of iTunes would remove any file not physically present in the local library, even if there was an entry for it, making manual management practically redundant on the iPhone. This behaviour has been changed but it will still only permit manual management with a library that has the correct internal ID. If you don't want to sync your library between machines on a regular basis just copy the iTunes Library.itl file from the current "home" machine to any other you want to use, then clean out the library entires and import the local content you have on that box.

  • HT204053 I have one apple ID and 2 iCloud accounts...is there a way to consolidate these accounts?

I have one apple ID , but two icloud accounts....not even sure why i have 2 now....might have happened when i got my iPad last year. Is there a way to consolidate the two icloud accounts without losing my contacts or other info?

Each iCloud account has a separate ID.  You can't have two accounts with the same ID.
If you want to consolidate them, choose the device with the account on it that you want to abandon, then save any photo stream photos that you want to keep to your camera roll (unless already there) by opening your my photo stream album, tapping Select, tapping the photos, tap the share icon (box with upward facing arrow), then tapping Save to Camera Roll.  If you are syncing notes with the account that you want to keep, you'll need to open each of your notes and email them to yourself so you can later copy and paste the text into new notes created in your other account.  Then go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account, provide your password (if using iOS 7) and choose Keep on My iDevice when prompted.  Then sign into the account you want to merge with and choose Merge when prompted.
You cannot move iCloud email accounts between iCloud accounts so you will have to leave it behind.  You can set email forwarding to the new email account, or add the email account back to your devices  as a secondary account by going to Settings>Mail,Contacts,Calendars>Add Account>iCoud, signing in to the account and enabling Mail.  Email in this secondary account will only be fetched periodically as push email is only supported in your primary account.

Problems such as yours are sometimes caused by files that should belong to you but are locked or have wrong permissions. This procedure will check for such files. It makes no changes and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
First, empty the Trash, if possible.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    find ~ $TMPDIR.. \( -flags +sappnd,schg,uappnd,uchg -o ! -user $UID -o ! -perm -600 \) 2>&- | wc -l | pbcopy
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear.
The output of the command will be a number. It's automatically copied to the Clipboard. Please paste it into a reply.
The Terminal window doesn't show the output. Please don't copy anything from there.

  • Is there ant way to consolidate "Exclamation point " songs?

Is there any way to consolidate "exclamation point" songs to update all of them at once. I have most of my songs in one place and xcan only choose one at a time. AND, unfortunately, some of the songs are "purchased". Are those lost for good???

You can't currently merge accounts nor transfer content from one account to another account - content will remain tied to the account that originally bought/downloaded it. As long as both accounts continue to be authorised on your computer's iTunes then you should be able to continue using them. Note that if you turn on automatic downloads for an account or re-download its past purchases then you may tie that computer (or iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch if that is what you are using) to that account for 90 days, so you wouldn't be able to log into the other account until those 90 days are up : associating a computer or device.

  • I appear to have two separate Apple IDs and have purchased music under both.  Is there any way to consolidate the accounts into one?

I appear to have two separate Apple IDs and to have purchased music under both of them (one is my husband's email account, the other is mine).  Is there a way to consolidate them, or is it possible to make the purchases made under two separte IDs downloadable on the same device(s)?

Not at this time. There is no way to merge two Apple IDs or be signed into the iTunes Store with more than one Apple ID at a time on an iOS device. However, you can USB sync the music to more than one device at a time, no problem. As long as all the music is on the same computer.
