Is there a way to define RAM usage of Preview?

Hello,
i use Mountain Lion now, but i found an annoying difference comparing to Snow Leo.
I am an Architect and i have to view and occasionally annotate tens of PDF Drawings a day. The files can be in certain cases quite large (10+ MB). On Snow Leo, viewing a PDF Drawing was smooth and fast independent from the file size, but in exchange it took much RAM, sometimes over 4GB (i have 8GB of RAM).
Nowadays, on Lion and Mountain Lion, Preview became annoyingly slow when i opened a PDF Drawing. Scrolling, zooming by pinching is also very slow and laggy.
My question is, if there is a way to extend the memory usage cap of Preview to make it work with PDF Drawings smooth and fast as before.
Maybe i am wrong, and the 2 things have nothing to do with each other, so if there is any other solution, i would be more than happy to read it here.
My config is:
MacBook pro 15" mid 2009
2,66 GHz dual core
8gb ram DDR3 1067 MHz

Then I'd say it is a hard drive problem as Apple uses the Slow 5400RPM models be default.
There have been many posts on this forum about Slow PFD scrolling/viewing with no real solution that I remember.

Is there any way to 'recover' RAM usage (other than restarting)?

Hi everyone,
I just upgraded my White Macbook 4,1 to 4GB of RAM and when I first boot the system, Activity Monitor shows that over 3GB is free.
After several hours of usage (Mail, Safari 4 Beta, iTunes, iCal, iPhoto, Time Machine, Address Book, and yes...Activity Monitor!) it shows just over 2GB free.
Now the part that puzzles me is that even after quitting all these applications, the RAM usage does recover somewhat, but never reaches it's original >3GB of availability.
A reboot certainly does the job. But is there any other way that Leopard can recover this memory? Is this normal? If I simply leave the system idle for some time without any open applications will Leopard eventually reclaim the lost memory?

There's no need for any "ram" recovery. It's all handled by the memory manager. You must be coming from the world of XP. See the following:

The amount of available RAM for applications is the sum of Free RAM and Inactive RAM. This will change as applications are opened and closed or change from active to inactive status. The Swap figure represents an estimate of the total amount of swap space required for VM if used, but does not necessarily indicate the actual size of the existing swap file. If you are really in need of more RAM that would be indicated by how frequently the system uses VM. If you open the Terminal and run the top command at the prompt you will find information reported on Pageins () and Pageouts (). Pageouts () is the important figure. If the value in the parentheses is 0 (zero) then OS X is not making instantaneous use of VM which means you have adequate physical RAM for the system with the applications you have loaded. If the figure in parentheses is running positive and your hard drive is constantly being used (thrashing) then you need more physical RAM.

Is there a way to define the ideal size the java heap memory? I'm using a server with (IR,FR,WA) installed and i'm using the Windows Server 2008 R2 with 32GB of ram memory. I have other server with the same configuration using essbase. How can i set the heap memory? I have around 250 users (not simultaneous).

For 2008 which is 64 bit you can have
For FR in windows registry
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Hyperion Solutions\Hyperion Reports\HyS9FRReport
Xms and Xmx can have 1536 each.
For workspace
Start “Start Workspace Agent UI” service and open Configuration Management
Console (CMC) via http://localhost:55000/cmc/index.jsp
for
Workspace Agent / Common Services Java Heap size you can have
Xms and Xmx as 1024 each.

Is there a way to define a layer for dynamic objects?

Hi all. Basically, I'm creating a number of dynamic text field objects in my Actionscript, but it looks like its being rendered on the wrong layer. I've written the actionscript in the first frame of my 3rd layer (which is masked), but the objects that are rendered dont appear to be affected by the masking effect (that does work with static objects). Is there a way to define programatically which layer an object is rendered in? Something like layerNo.stage.addChild(object)?

first, you have the command 'addChildAt(child, index)'
thought i'm not sure if that would solve your problem. in order to mask dynamic text you have to embed its fond, by setting the textfield's property 'embedFonts' to true.

Is there a way to track Admin usage of ANM

Is there a way to track Admin usage of ANM (application network manager)? We have a few servers running the ANM application. Each ANM server points to/manages ACE blades (in the datacenter where the server resides). I would like to understand how much the ANM gui is used for each of the servers. I have looked through the GUI for some sort of report but wasn't able to find one. Cisco ACS has the "Adminstration Audit" report which shows all admin activity of the application per admin user (per ACS server). Is there an equivalent report for ANM?
In addtion I would like to know how much of the ACE config activity is spawned via CLI versus the ANM gui.

I'm not too sure I can follow your question. jsse is an extension used for j2se (included from 1.4.2 and up) and therefor has nothing to do with the Java EE SDK.
But to answer your question a little: just use the java.net.Proxy class. The moment when you need to use https you can then use URL.openConnection() which can optionally take a proxy class as argument. So, for example:
Proxy proxy = new Proxy(Proxy.Type.HTTP, new INetSocketAddress("proxy.intranet.lan", 3128));
URL site = new URL("https://sunsolve.sun.com");
HttpsURLConnection wcon = (HttpsURLConnection) site.openConnection(proxy);And then you can do with the connection object whatever you want, it'll fully utilize the proxy. For more information on this I suggest to check up on the API documentation.

Keyboard support - Is there a way to define unrecognised keys

I have creative prodikeys keyboard. Java seems to only support a known set of keys. There has to be a way to define new ones. I having trouble believing that it cant be done.

I would like to get an ipad, but do not want my children viewing inappropriate things on it. I do not want to block the internet completely, just monitor what they view and search for. Is there any way I can use a safe eyes application or internet monitoring tool?

Is there a way to stop .oam files from previewing as previously placed files in Muse CC?

I'm placing a new .oam file in a new website I'm creating in Muse but it previews as a previous .oam file that I used in a previous website. When preview the page on a browser it's fine but it's making it hard to place the .oam file in the correct position. Is there a way to stop this from happening so it previews correctly in Muse?

If you're using Safari as your web browser go to "Safari -> Preferences...", select "General" from the toolbar and uncheck the "Open safe files after downloading" box.
Other browsers should have a similar setting in their prefs.

Is there a way to save Aperture RAW edits (previews) as .tif files?

In iPhoto Preferences/Advanced, it is possible to choose to save RAW edits as .tif files. The resulting files are then stored in the Previews folder inside the iPhoto Library. In Aperture, edits of RAW files are stored in the Previews folder as .jpg files. I am aware that I can export the edited versions as .tif files outside of the Aperture Library. Is there a way to do it inside the Aperture Library, just the way iPhoto does??

Probably collecting everything on an artboard into a new layer might give you the option to use a script to save layers to files.
But this is a feature request but no as of yet has suggested a way that this might work, at least I do not think so.

Is there a way turn off iOS 5 email preview on my iPad 2?

Is there a method to turn off the email preview in IOS 5. I would rather be able to see only the list of emails and not the last email I read. It is really actualy very annoying to me.

I am wondering if there is a way, using LabView, to monitor the CPU usage during the execution of a vi. I want to be able to programmatically adjust the program controls based on the CPU usage. This program is designed to run all day in the background.

There are at least two Windows tools you can use to see CPU usage
(depending on what version of Windows you have). The Task Manager
(ctrl-alt-del) has a panel that shows CPU usage. There is another
program that has more options as to what to watch. Under W2K, it is in
the Administrative Tools in the Control Panel and is called Performance.
Play around with adding various new "Counters".
Another option is to measure CPU usage programmatically. George Zou
has a tool that makes the appropriate dll call. Check out

Im tryig to create a game for kids were they can learn how to write! In one of the games there will be a template of a letter, for example A, the A wii be hollow inside so that the kids can folow the outline! But if they go over a line i want the program to display a message telling them this and having to restart drawing from the mouse!
I know how to draw the lines fron the mouse i just dont kno if it is possible to define different areas according to the shape of a letter??

Footnotes - Is there a way to define different formats on one document?

To my knowledge, footnotes options is applied to the document and not to the text.
So, there is no option to use both numbers and stars (*).
So if I want a footnote to be 2, than ***, than 3, I'm unable to do so.

Alas -- no. InDesign is lacking all but the very basics: no re-start (other than per page or section), no start at an arbitrary number, no switching of numbering style.
Occasionally, I have to start with a * footnote, then continue with regular numbering. If the star footnote is on a page of its own, I can 'hide' the actual footnote number by setting its color to [None] and manually insert the star in the text and in the note itself. Then I set the next page to start a new section, so the next note will be '1' again.
If the star note and the first regular note appear on the same page, I also manually insert the star but put its text inside the first footnote above its own text.
Both are rather dirty tricks that could well be avoided with some additions to the footnote options ...
