People - you critisize something you've no idea about! Smart dialing (also called T9) is NOT about text input for God's sake...it's about dialing a contact in a really quick and simple way just by clicking on one of 10 dial buttons (much bigger and easier to be tapped btw especially on the move) and the phone finds all the contacts matching typed combination
For example I want to dial contact MLADD - I then tap on 6,5,2,3,3 and the phone searches for contacts matching all the combinations hidden on these numbers.
Another example: see Apple's website containing contact line number specified in 2 ways: (800) MY-IPHONE (800-694-7466)
Do you get my point now?
I've used at least 6 different phones in my life so far and went through most of well known platforms including Symbian, Blackberry, Android, Windows Phone and now iOS. I'm very sure there is no better and faster way to quickly and easily dial somebody but by using a smart dial. Dialing somebody this way takes 2 seconds while dialing using tapping on contacts field, then typing a word using keyboard (assuming you click on a right button when on the move) takes a while longer and is frustrating.
It's just a matter of a wider perspective when looking at this problem. If you would use it at least once - you would demand it as well.
For people liking tapping everywhere to perform basic actions - let it be as it is, but why not to improve something by adding an additional option in setting and enable SmartDial?

  • Create an iPod or iphone version - is there any way to avoid duplicate files OR automating a new name for the new file?

    hi,
I have two devices for my videos. An ipod classic and an Ipad. I would prefer to keep the highest resolution possible but also will be travelling and it will be useful to have a large archive with me.
I have found that many of the videos I have are "incompatible" with my ipod classic and am in the process of using the "create an ipod or iphone version" but this results in a duplicate file in my itunes library that is identical in everyway (except size and this can be bigger or smaller).
When you buy a HD video off itunes, you get both versions but only one file populates in the itunes libary.
Is there anyway that when itunes "creates the ipod or iphone version", it can do automatically merge these two files so you only see one file in your library? And then it will automatically sync the appropriate file with the appropriate device?
Or is there a way to have itunes "create the ipod or iphone version" and have it automatically label it with the name "XXX (ipod version"?
I am finding it very annoying to manually change all the titles on all the files being created.
    thanks, margaret

When you open a Word document with Pages you get a translated-to-Pages file & the original Word document is unchanged. There are programs that will save over the original file such as LibreOffice. Pages will not.

    Upgrade to 10.7.5. See:
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.

The iPad must always be synced to one computer using the Apple ID that it was originally synced to. Otherwise all apps & files will be deleted. There's no way to retrieve once erased.
Is there a backup on a different computer?

  • My old computer ( PC) crashed and I have a new PC now but I want to start synching my contactings and stuff onto my new computer. Itunes says it must wipe my iphone before it can synch. Is there a way to keep my contacts?

My old computer ( PC) crashed and I have a new PC now but I want to start synching my contactings and stuff onto my new computer. Itunes says it must wipe my iphone before it can synch. Is there a way to keep my contacts?

Create a dummy contact on your new PC in Outlook.  In iTunes, elect to synch your contacts with Outlook.  You will be prompted to "merge" your contacts.  Once done and all your contacts are on your computer in Outlook, you can delete the "dummy" contact.

  • Is there any way to copy your contacts to the sim?

Hey! i just wanted to ask if theres any way to transfer iPhone contacts to your sim so that u can use the sim in another phone with contacts in it?

iOS would create two entries if a single contact has two numbers, one for each. Like all other phones do.
Numbers disgarded will be determined by alphabetical order.  Like they would for every phone that also has this limitation privided they selected the industry standard Copy All option. Otherwise they can pick and choose from their contact list which ones they want to copy if they have more than the maximum allowed phone numbers that can be stored on a sim card. Which is also an industry standard option.
Average consumers will have to learn how sim card storage works via google for instance or opening the manual instructions on the iPhone or by speaking to their carrier who are more than happy to explain to the customer that by putting the contacts on their sim card they can use their servers to push these numbers to a new sim in the event their current one becomes faulty for whatever reason and they decided to get another manufacturers phone as a consequence.
He/she will think "Well, atleast I managed to keep whopping huge 500 phone numbers. Saved myself a few hours there."
    Next question?
PS. Apart from facebook fanatics who don't actually know 90% of the people they friended, do you know anyone with more than 500 phone numbers? Like most I know alot of people, and like a lot of other people I work for a pretty big company and have a company phone... I haven't managed to hit that magic number yet on either of the phones and I can't think of anyone who I know that has. No doubt there might be people out there with more than 500 phone numbers in their contact list but then they find themselves in the same boat as every other person on the entire planet that uses these sim cards in a commerically available phone.
They haven't lost out on anything by gaining this feature by not being able to create an exact replica of the iPhone Contact list, but they will gain something by seeing it introduced because I am willing to say that the iPhone is the only smartphone/mobilephone on the market within the last decade missing this feature.
I would also like to point out that out of all the topics created in this section of the forum within the last 24 hours this is one of the most viewed by visitors and thus this question has stoked interest in knowing how to get this feature working... except they learnt harshly that it doesn't exist on their phone. I would imagine there were a couple of "Eh?!" moments when they found that out. As for what they thought when they saw someone doing everything he could to stop it from coming to iPhone, I cannot say. Because like them I cannot understand why such a feature would be so vigorously opposed, especial;ly when that sim contact list can be transferred between different carriers when using a PAC code to transfer your old number to a new contract with a different company.

  • 2 iPhones 1 computer – Is there any way to have separate contact list

My wife and I recently purchased 2 iPhones (One for each of us). We are presently sharing an iBook G4. Is there any way to have separate contact list and separate calendars on the computer? We both use our phones for our individual work, and have different contact. I am trying to move us from pc to mac. I have a newer pc (compared to the G4) that I can hook the phones up too, but as I said I am trying to move away from PC's. We purchased the G4 used from a friend to get started and learn mac. Sorry for the long explanation I just wanted you to know that I am new to mac.

Just set-up 2 user accounts on the computer, then you effectively have 2 computers in one. All your phone data, and everything else (internet bookmarks, desktop preferences, application preferences) etc. are completely separate.
You and your wife can then use the computer in exactly the way you both prefer without affecting the other.
You didn't say what version of Mac OS X you are using, so here are the instructions for:
    10.4.x: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/en/mh168.html
    10.5.x: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/8235.html
You can then use *Fast User Switching* to switch between the accounts:

  • Is there a way to view our contacts when offline o...

I am not at home, but I need a phone # off my contact list. Is there a way to view my contact from my account? Since our contact are on a server, you'd think that would be possable.... but then again, we're talking about skype here.... not much common sense in managment!
    Thanks!

Your contact list can only be accessed using Skype application installed on your computer/device.
However, if you Skype account is linked with Microsoft account, then you can login to Outlook.com on the web and tere you should alos be able to see your contact list.

  • Is there any way to retrieve my contacts from the iPhone 3G, after I imported my contacts to my sim card within the settings, mail

Is there a way to retrieve my contacts back into my 3G iPhone?
I was trying to save my contacts by importing my contacts to my sim card by going into settings, mail-contacts and then hit the Import SIM Contacts.

  • Is there a way to download my contacts from my android phone to my iPad?  I have a galaxy s11

Is there a way to download my contact list from my sprint galaxy s11 android phone to my iPad?

Can you get the contact list onto your computer and perhaps your outlook (or other such program)
If so then you can sync your iTunes and iPad to that outlook account.
Alternatively, the more tedious way is to e-mail the contacts, one at a time, to an account hte iPad can open, and you can then save them from there. (it should mail them as a v-card and when you open the e-mail, tap on the attached v-card and the iPad will prompt you to save it to contacts)

Ps. My contacts was the ONLY data NOT sync'd to my iTunes! =(

You can import TO a SIM. To import, if you look at the button in settings says Import SIM Contacts. That means it is importing, or moving the contacts FROM the SIM to the iPhone. Importing means to take something from the area you are selecting and moving it to the current area, in other words, as others have told you, you imported what was ON the SIM card and since the iPhone does not store ANY information on the SIM, you imported NOTHING to a place that had something.
The way you save and backup contacts on an iPhone is to sync them through iTunes to a supported application on a computer such as Address Book on a Mac, Outlook or Windows Contacts on a Windows machine. If you did not do that prior to the Import attempt, then you will not be able to recover them.

  • How do I back up Contacts on my  iPhone 3 I got back in 2008? With MobileMe closing down, is there a way I export my Contacts info to my laptop. Alternately can I use iCloud with an iPhone this old?

Outlook 2003, 2007, or 2010 along with syncing calendar events and notes, or with the address book app used by Windows Mail called Windows Contacts for syncing contacts only.
Before syncing contacts with an empty Windows Contacts address book, enter one contact in Windows Contacts. This will provide a merge prompt with the first sync for this data which you want to select. Syncing direct with Windows Contacts via the iTunes sync process is selected under the Info tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes.

  • Is there any way to sync my contacts on my ipod touch to Microsoft Outlook?

Is there any way to sync my contacts on my ipod touch to microsoft outlook using the push service from Mobile Me? Or any other mode of transferring?

Sure. Install the latest version of iTunes on your PC, and just connect your iPod Touch to it, decline the prompt to autosync (the warning about losing your music), then go into the info tab, select sync contacts, and click apply. Your contacts will be transferred (both directions, i.e. the outlook contacts and your IPT contacts will be merged and the combined set will be present on both lists).
    Hope this helps...
