This is a user forum so you are not addressing Apple. There's nothing to fix, that's how home-sharing works. There would be no way for the ATV to recognize your library and display content if the computer is in sleep mode.
You can always airplay from an IOS device or use icloud if you don't wish to keep the computer on.

After I hook up my camera to the Imac, Aperture launches. Instead, I'd like to just use the Imac to view the photos that are on the SD card inside my camera. That way, I can easily delete the photos I don't want to waste hard drive space on. I could do minor cropping from inside the camera before saving the files to Aperture. And, Photostream wouldn't pick up all those photos I didin't want to save in the first place had I moved them all over to Aperture and just viewed it with the card. I want the imac to operate as a live monitor so I can view the photos on the SD card inside the camera. Any thoughts?? Just like you can using a TV that has the right inputs.

You can use Migration Assistant in Applications > Utilities to get all your files from one iMac to the other. If you want to upgrade your older model to MtLion you need to have at least a mid 2007 Intel Core 2 Duo with a bare minimum of 2GB of RAM. Then you need to buy the Snow Leopard 10.6.3 DVD , update with
Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1
at which point you can access the App Store to purchase and install MtLion 10.8 where you would then have access to the iCloud.

You don't state what iMac it is or what you want to use it for an external display with so we cannot answer the question. But without a bootable drive, no you cannot. However you can get the internal HD replaced or you can connect an external HD and boot from it. Without some basics about the computer it's impossible question to answer. I could turn the monitor attached to the iMac as primary(and set the dock there), but I got some problems with programs opening in wrong positions all the time and some issues with full screen programs as well(also I think the iMac didn't handle well setting the primary display in another monitor).

Don't know of a way to get the Dock on the top.
But, to keep it out of the way but available, in the Dock prefs pane in System Preferences you can set it to "automatically hide and show". Choosing that setting means the Dock will normally be hidden; to gain access to it, all you need do is brush the bottom of the screen (or the side you have Doc set to) with the cursor, and it will appear, staying visible only until you move the cursor away.
You can also use the keyboard combo Command-Option-D to invoke/revoke Dock Hiding, which in effect means you can use that keyboard command to toggle the Dock's visibility.
