Is there a way to identify which files haven't been migrated from a backup?

I've just upgraded my girlfriends 13" mbp from Leopard to Snow Leopard. It was behaving a little strangely and being sluggish so I erased everything before the upgrade. I've used Migration Assistant to transfer most files from a Time Machine backup but was a bit unsure about transferring everything blindly as I'm a little worried about what was causing the problems before the upgrade. The only items I didn't select in Migration Assistant were the 'All other files and folders' in the 'Users' drop box, and the 'All other files and folders on Macintosh HD'. I left these as I wanted to investigate what exactly these files were but now I have no clue how to go about this. Is there a quick way to highlight which files were present in the backup before the upgrade that aren't there now? Are any of these files likely to be hugely important?
Also, because I backed up again after the upgrade, Migration Assistant automatically selects the last backup to migrate from instead of the one that has the missing files. Is there a way to select which backup file to use from my external drive?
Thanks

It's usually not a good idea to upgrade a computer that's having problems. They may get fixed, but more often they'll get worse.
'All other files and folders on Macintosh HD'.
Those are other files, not in any user home folders, besides system files. On most installations, they're just a few Help files, but if you've installed things or created files at the top level of a drive, they weren't migrated.

No, unfortunately. You can only do that with a full system restore.
If you used +Setup Assistant+ when the Mac first started up, the user accounts now on the Mac are the same ones, and you can use the "Star Wars" display to restore selected items from older backups. But you can't restore an entire home folder, or the default folders in the user's home folder (Desktop, Documents, etc.); you have to select the contents of those folders instead. See #15 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
If you used the +Migration Assistant+ app, however, the user accounts may not be recognized as being the same ones, so may not have permission to see and restore from the backups.
It's a pain, but your best bet may be to start over: do a full system restore of the last Leopard backup, per #14 in the FAQ. Then try to address the "strangely and being sluggish" issue. Once that's either fixed or you determine it isn't a big problem, just install Snow Leopard over Leopard without erasing.

if you use time machine, you should be able to get it back that way. Although IBA saves changes on an ongoing basis, it doesn't create a back up or supplemental copy elsewhere on your drive.

  • HT1535 Is there a way to identify which copy of a duplicate is tied to a playlist so the correct duplication can be removed?

Recent Window's Vista reimage resulted in many duplicates in iTunes Library.  Too many hands in the process.  I don't see a way to identify which version is tied to a play list so I can remove the unattached duplicate.

    Hello 3PodFam
If you are trying to get rid of duplicates within iTunes, the articles below will give assistance on how to remove them from iTunes as well as backing up your playlist and then import them. The export or import a playlist go to File > Library and you will see either option at that point. To show duplicates go to View > Show Duplicates Items.

  • X61 fan error - is there a way to identify which fan it is happening from???

My 7675-CTO X61 is giving me a fan error.
I have read the forum and am pretty sure I can replace the fan.
However, how do I figure out which fan is giving me the fan error?
Is there a way to figure this out?
I need to know whether it is the main cooling fan (which is also called the CPU fan and Fansink I believe - correct me if I'm wrong) or the second fan in order to order the appropriate parts for this.
    Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

I believe there is no way to tell, but I have found that if there is a second fan, the 2nd (little) one tends to be the problem. I keep a lttle fan around and always try it first because it is much easier to change

  • Is there a way to discover which version of Vista is licensed from the Notebook COA sticker?

    Hi,
I have recently retired and had the opportunity to buy my corporate laptop (Fujitsu Lifebook) which I did. Although, when new, the laptop was pre-licensed for Vista, it was installed and managed by the corporate IT department under their corporate license
agreement ending up with Win7 at the time I bought it. Of course the hard drive had to be erased, and I want to go back and install Vista as originally licensed. I have no recovery disk and plan to contact Fujitsu to ask them nicely for one. Now I come to
my problem. The 25 digit product key is readable, a 14 digit something or other is also readable, but the Vista operating system version is illegible. Is it possible to find this out from the other information which is legible so that I can ask Fujitsu for
    the right recovery disk?

The program linked to below correctly identified a Vista version from the product key.
    http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/System-Info/The-Ultimate-PID-Checker.shtml
While it is a standalone executable (it does not require installation) some degree of paranoia may be justified when using it.
It also arrives as a rar archive so you may need a third party program to extract it (eg WinRAR).

  • Is there a way to recover messages after they've been moved from local folders to an IMAP account, which deleted them after they were moved?

I was trying to get Thunderbird to access my Hotmail account through IMAP instead of POP, so I moved all my messages from the account to "Local Folders", then I removed the POP account and created the new IMAP one. After that I started to move messages into the IMAP account, but I ran into some trouble when the server wouldn't want to accept all the messages I was uploading and it would stop.
So, I decided to move everything from "Local Folders" into the IMAP account while Thunderbird was offline, once it finished, I went online and instead of uploading the newly found messages in my IMAP account to the server, it decided to delete the messages. I guess because the actual online account contained no files so it wanted to synchronise and make my offline folder to also contain no files.
In short, never try this. It's a disaster. And, I know I should've made a back up prior to trying this, it's just that Thunderbird is usually very reliable, it never occurred to me.
I still have the MBOX and MSF files, but even though they contain information, no extension can extract it.
Could anyone, please, help me out?

    Hi,
I had tried using that very same extension right after messing things up, but it hadn't worked because I deleted the original folders as well.
Then I tried doing a System Restore (luckily, Windows had decided to do an automatic one the night before), but still the missing emails weren't showing.
A while after that I saw your suggestion and it hit me that I had not tried it after doing the System Restore, so I tried it and all messages were flooding back just like magic.
Thank you very much for your help! I'm very happy right now.

  • Deduplication: how to identify which files are "in-policy" (and which are not)?

    Dear experts,
in eventlog I find the following information for one of my deduplicated volumes:
    Volume: F: (\\?\Volume{9794e270-fb08-487e-979b-8a08fa9ca311}\)
    Error code: 0x0
    Error message:
    Savings rate: 24
    Saved space: 853327714684
    Volume used space: 2681869406208
    Volume free space: 66771247104
    Optimized file count: 1199618
    In-policy file count: 1188049
    Job processed space (bytes): 0
    Job elapsed time (seconds): 2
    Job throughput (MB/second): 0
Some things look strange to me:
    - The savings rate is only 24% which looks odd because I get about 40% on other file shares with similar characteristics.
    - The "Optimized file count" is higher than the "in-policy" file count.
    - The volume has about 3.5 million files but only 1.1 million files are "in-policy".
My understanding of "in-policy" files is that all files are in-policy which are older than 3 days (if not configured different, which is not the case) and which are not contained in an excluded folder (nothing configured here) and which have no
excluded file extension (nothing configured here apart from the default). Right?
I'm sure that only a small fraction of the files on this volume are younger than three days, so something seems to be wrong there, but I have no idea how to find the cause of the problem.
Is there any way to identify the files (full path) which are considered to be not "in-policy"?
How can I find out if the optimization process really looks at all files - and doesn't skip a million?
    Thanks!
    Regards
    Christoph

Mandy, thanks for your feedback! I've read these technet articels, but I couldn't learn something really helpfull related to my problem there. To make investigation of the problem easier I did the following:
    - created a brand new empty volume (x:) on the same server
    - enabled data deduplication on that volume with a minimal file age of 0 days
    - copied about 2GB of data from the problem-volume in 15450 files to this new volume
    - started "Start-DedupJob x: -Type Optimization -Memory 50"
After a few seconds that job completed and I got the following result:
    Volume: X: (\\?\Volume{d1ba9ed8-28f1-44d1-9535-fe603d6a70c6}\)
    Error code: 0x0
    Error message:

    Saved space: 12360718
    Volume used space: 3091664896
    Volume free space: 7610097664
    Optimized file count: 153
    In-policy file count: 153
    Job processed space (bytes): 46095214
    Job elapsed time (seconds): 9
    Job throughput (MB/second): 4.88
The question is: why are only 153 files in-policy?
All files (of more than 15000) are of course "older than 0 days", there are no excluded folders configured, there are no excluded extensions configured, no file has one of the default excluded extensions and more than 1000 files are bigger than 100kB
(minimal size for deduplication is 32kB). So what makes only 153 files qualify for deduplication?
My impression is that there are further undocumented requirements which have to be met by a file to qualify for deduplication. But if there's no detailed log of an optimization run available how to find out what's going on?
(Or is something going wrong on my server?)
    Kind Regards
    Christoph

Most likely you have Office 2004 which are PPC-only applications and will not work in Lion. Upgrade to Office 2011. Other alternatives are:
Apple's iWork suite (Pages, Numbers, and Keynote.)
Open Office (Office 2007-like suite compatible with OS X.)
    NeoOffice (similar to Open Office.)
LibreOffice (a new direction for the Open Office suite.)

THis is safe for Mac's? Sorry, I have just never heard of this site before.
And there are literally tens of thousands of sites of which I've not heard, too. Not this one.
It's legit. There are lots of links in Apple Support Communities to the LibreOffice web site, as well as others that are legitimate open-source developers of options to buying MS Office, such as NeoOffice and OpenOffice. I have Open Office installed on one of my older Macs that can't run Office 2011 and it is rock-solid.
I've been here too long to start posting bogus urls now.

  • Is there any way to tell which formulas a particular cell is in, reverse look-up style? That is, is there a way to search somehow for which formulas in a sheet contain a particular cell in them without opening all of them up? If not, it would be nice

Is there any way to tell which formulas a particular cell is in, reverse look-up style? That is, is there a way to search somehow for which formulas in a sheet contain a particular cell in them without opening all of them up? If not, it would be nice.
I'm fixing a Numbers document that I use in business daily that's become overly complicated, but while I want to clear/delete a number of cells in it to clean it up, I'm not sure if those cells are being used as source for other formulas on the page. I don't have to open all my formulas one by one to see if that cell is in there, do I?! That'd be a huge amount of work if I wanted to eliminate say 10 cells to search each formula on the page to see if it is in there or watch all the cells when I delete that cell to see if the numbers change! There's got to be an easier way! Right click doesn't seem to be any help.
I don't want to damage my daily tool to make it cleaner and reorganize it. Is there really no way to do a reverse look-up of which formulas a particular cell is in?! Any time I click on a formula it highlights all the CELLS in that formula. Why can't I (or can I?) do the reverse and see all the FORMULAS that contain a particular cell?
As a Numbers document ages or gets used frequently, you can sometimes forget which cells are tied to which formulas. You just look for the results of your formulas. Would be a nice thing to be able to do. Thoughts? Work-arounds? Answers?

Answer would be no unless application provided such feature. Numbers does not as far as I know.
Note that even if you have complete list of formulae used in a table, identifying formulae referencing any given cell is not simple.
E.g., cell T20 is referenced not only in
    =T20+1
    but also in
    =SUM(T)
    =SUM(20:20)
    =SUM(S19:U22)
    =OFFSET(S1,19,1,1,1)
    =INDIRECT("T"&(10*2))
In order to identify such formula, we have to actually evaluate it to see if it references the given cell. Especially such formula as OFFSET() and INDIRECT() may not be found by static parser because their parameters can be dynamic.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings.

I'm wondering if it moved my rhapsody music to the cloud (which is pointless) so I shut off 'document' sharing in case that's the problem, but it's still saying I'm at 5G right now.
When I go to icloud.com all I see is the dumb app icons, with no clue as to what's taking up that disk space.
btw, I did not sync photos from the get-go.

Have you enabled Automatic Downloads on all of your devices? This would download all of the books to all of your devices when you download on any device - as long as you are using the same Apple ID and iTunes account on all of your devices.
Go to Settings>Store>Automatic Downloads>Books>On. When you download a book on one iDevice, it will download to all of your iDevices. This will only work for downloads moving forward from the moment that you turn the setting on. You will have to download the previously purchased books to all of your other devices.
With iCloud, you can start reading the book on one device and then pickup where you left off on another device.

Is there a way to configure NTFS file system on an NSS 324 SmartStorage unit. So far I can setup ext 3 or ext 4 but no option for NTFS. This unit should be joining a Windows Server 2008 R2 network and needs to be shared with all users. This unit will replace a File server running Win 2003 SP2.

Thank you very much for your reply. The idea is to decommission the Windows file server which is running Windows Server 2003 SP2 operating system but is not running as a DC but just a member server. All this server is doing is providing file server services so my idea is to replace it with the NSS 324 box. My only concern is that when my NSS joins the domain all my users would be able to see and access network shares transparently, the same way they saw the former W2003 file server. After I transferred the data from File server I will use the same for NSS that was used for file server as well as same IP address and folders path as before.
    Any suggestions or advice?
Once again thank you very much for your reply.
    Cheers,

The internal HDDs must be formatted in either EXT3 or EXT4 file system because NSS uses Linux OS.  This is mainly because the RAM designed to fit with the customized Linux OS's size.
You can connect to an external HDD via a  USB or eSATA port. The external HDD's file system can be NTFS, FAT32, AFT or EXT3/4 to be recognized for read/write. You can connect a 2TB USB/eSATA drive connec to the NSS via USB port to format your HDD for NTFS, AFT, FAT32, or EXT3/4 partition.
You can join the NSS to a Windows domainr so all domain users to access NSS. You cannot replace the NSS for the Windows 2003 SP2 server. They are two different products and do different jobs. Windows server is features sets server while the NSS is the files/data server.
    Hope that helps!!

  • Is there any way to create a file compatible with Premiere Pro

Is there any way to create a file in Premiere elements that is compatible with Premiere Pro and that can be used in Premiere Pro

    Consternation
The important information that I do not see mentioned nor offered by you.
1.What version of Premiere Elements are you using and on what computer operating system it is running? What version of Premiere Pro do you want to use?
The Premiere Pro Import Supported Formats seem to indicate that it will accept the Premiere Elements project.prel (project file) on Windows Only.
Adobe Premiere Pro Help | Supported file formats
This may or may not be possible depending on damaged projects or outdated elements.
    2. If you want to export your Premiere Elements Timeline to a file saved to the computer hard drive and subsequently import that into your Premiere Pro version, that "should" work. You would go to the Premiere Elements Publish+Share/Computer/ and make a selection based on what the Premiere Pro Import Supported file formats are and what you need. I can help you with that. But, details first.
But, just a "beware"...when you get to Premiere Elements 11 or 12 (if that is the version involved) Publish+Share/Computer/ there are several categories, but all you see is Adobe Flash Video, MPEG, and AVCHD. The rest of the list that includes AVI and QuickTime which both need to be scrolled to all of the time to see them, not just sometimes, with the thin scroll bar to the right of the list of choices. You can export files
with AVI file extension, under Publish+Share/Computer/AVI
with MOV file extension, under Publish + Share/Computer/QuickTime
And, if you do not have QuickTime installed on your computer with Premiere Elements, you are not going to have presets for the QuickTime export.
Remember, there is more to an export than just its file extension. Know your other export properties as well.
In many cases, you can customize the export settings to suit your requirements.
Problems will exist if you are trying to go from Premiere Elements Windows to Premiere Pro Mac or vice versa.
I would be glad for the opportunity to help you with this issue, but details are needed.
Looking forward to your follow up.
    Thanks.
