Is there a way to keep users logged in?

I have a situation where I have two users on one MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard and would like the computer to switch to the login screen, but not log the users out. One user is an administrator and requires a password to sign in, the other is a public user and does not require a password to sign in.
I have the System Preferences set to "Log out after 30 minutes of inactivity" because I want the system to remain "secure" should the system get stolen. A would be thief would have access to the public user, which has parental limitations and Simple Finder active, but wouldn't be able to access the administration functions. However, both users are left active from time to time. Occassionally, I'll go into the admin user and forget to log out. The computer switches to the login screen and then a public user (family members in this case) can simple log into the public user account.
The problem with this scenario is that the public user gets logged out every time they're idle for 30 minutes (of course, that's what's supposed to happen). What I want to happen is that the user stayed logged in, but the computer still returned to the login screen after 30 minutes of inactivity, simply showing the "user is logged in" message.
Is this possible?
Thanks in advance for any help!

You have a few options.  One, you could turn on fast user switching, in System Preferences -> Accounts -> Login Options.  Then, you just choose the Login Window option from the FUS menu (which will be next to the Spotlight icon) whenever you leave the computer unattended.  When you log back in to your account, it's fast and all your apps are still open.
Alternately, you could go to System Preferences -> Security & Privacy (or whatever it was called in Snow Leopard, maybe just Security) and check the box to require a password for waking from sleep or dismissing the screen saver.  Then, if the computer gets stolen, the thief will not be able to use it, but would be able to force shut down and restart, and then can log in to the guest account...  if the thief knows how to do that, of course.
Also, note that any security you believe the account password implies is false.  That password is easy to reset, which would give the thief access to all the data on your account.  You can solve that by encrypting anything you don't want the thief to get access to.  You can encrypt the entire disk, but still leave a guest account for a thief to use so you can potentially locate the computer later, using File Vault in Lion.  File Vault in Snow Leopard has some fairly significant disadvantages, so I don't know that I'd recommend that, but if you upgrade to Lion, File Vault has more features and is a bit more mature.  This isn't necessary, though, you could always put sensitive data in an encrypted disk image created with Disk Utility or in your keychain (which stays locked even if you reset the account password).
Hope this helps!

  • Is there a way to keep the screen from lighting up every time an email comes in, but still be able to see the email on the lock screen when you press the home button?

Is there a way to keep the screen from lighting up everytime an email comes in, but still be able to see the email on the lock screen when you press the home button?  This is killing my battery, but also is kinda the whole point of the notification center in my mind.

This is something I've been wondering. I am a bit like you, I like being able to have a glance at emails or Facebook updates without having to log in, and I think it would be great to be able to turn off the notification switching the screen on, especially for emails as I do get a lot, and Facebook, but I somehow doubt it is possible.
I am currently monitoring how much this eats up my battery charge. On a normal day, after an overnight charge, I would probably still have 30%-40% left when I leave work in the evening. Today, I was down to 48% by lunchtime, where I've usually got a good 60-70% left... Might have to turn email notifications off on lock screen until it's possible to have them appearing in the list without flashing me...

  • When transferring data from an old hard drive to a new one, is there a way to keep alias files and folders in tact?

My mac and I rely HEAVILY on the use of alias files and folders. The simple version of my question is: When transferring data from an old hard drive to a new one, is there a way to keep alias files and folders in tact?  These are not symlinks or symbolic links, they're all alias files and folders.
Is there any software out there that might help me with a solution?  Are there any tricks or tips you can give me to try?

Use either Setup Assistant at first start, or Migration Assistant on subsequent occasions and all will be transferred intact. Given your wording I presume you are Unix savvy and will appreciate the problems that duplicate userids would cause, so of you use MA for the migration, make sure the target Mac has no userid equal to that on the source and you will be fine.
SA does not have these issues since it runs before any user account is created, so it can simply copy over everything. But MA runs after the fact and only solves the issue partially by changing the UID in the user directory, leading to permission problems.

  • Is there any way to disable the log-in process?

i  have no need to re-enter my password to access my computer every time i restart, or after it falls asleep
is there a way to disable the log-in screen and just go straight to my desktop?
    edit: i tried preferences  > security/privacy > de-select "require password"
but i still get the log-in screen
    thanks

    Hi,
    take a look at:
    Preferences
    Users & Groups
    Login Options
At the top you can (de-) activate the automatic login.
    Does it work for you?

  • Is there a way to keep an animation playing for a mouseout event when you start a new one?

I have some buttons that on mouseover they animate scaling up and on mouseout they scale back down. This is working great except the scenario when a user mouse's over one button then immediately mouse's out to the next button the animation on the first button abruptly stops and the animation starts on the current button. Is there a way to keep the animation playing for the first button AND have the animation play work for the second button?
I have uploaded a quick demo to illustrate what I mean. Also I've uploaded the project file if anyone can find a solution. Thanks!
    Dropbox - edgeAnimateButtonSample.zip

You need to create two symbols for these two buttons, so that both can play simultaneously.
    I have created a sample for you @ https://www.dropbox.com/s/e59agt7mr8r785l/newedgeAnimateButtonSample.rar?dl=0

CCC can  also custom schedule and save the changes between  cloned states for backup just like TimeMachine does or choose the strict mirrored clone option or even choose highly custom options in what gets saved to the clone and how.
Yes, it can, but since CCC and other cloning apps always compare everything on the Mac to everything on the backup, it takes far longer, and much more CPU, to figure out what needs to be backed-up, than Time Machine (which uses the File System Event Store, a log of changes that OSX keeps on each drive).  That means it's rarely practical to run a clone more than once a day, as there's a noticeable performance impact; but TM's quick backups are barely noticeable.
As an example, the TM backups on my small system rarely take more than a minute, and I rarely notice them unless I happen to see the icon spinning.  But I have my CCC clone updated early each morning (while I'm still snoozing), because it takes 10-15 minutes and slows performance considerably.
So it has the best of both uses now, and the clone is bootable like using the original drive, which TimeMachine lacks as it's only a backup system.
Absolutely.  I always recommend Time Machine plus a clone (minimum).
Also clones can be directly accessed, like any other normal drive, by any computer of any operating system that can read the HFS+ format of the Mac, unlike TimeMachine which only works with a Mac. This is beneficial as one can choose to use a Win or Linux PC with their Mac files in times of crisses, to transfer them etc.
That's a two-edged sword, as they say.  Time Machine backups are somewhat more secure because only Macs can read them.   But again, if you have both TM and a frequently-updated clone, you have the advantages of each.
Don't make me write a TimeMachine vs clones smackdown

  • Is there a way to get a log of the bluetooth devices my iphone has been connected to?   My Bluetooth car speaker phone was recently stolen from my car and appears to be on Craigslist.

Is there any way to get a log of the bluetooth devices my Iphone has been connected to?  I recenly had my Bluetooth Jabra stolen from my car and now a simliar one is on Craigslist.  I'd like to give my connection log to the police before I go and see if my Iphone recognizes the device in question.  Any way to get any type of bluetooth device connection log out of my iphone?

Your contacts should still be on whatever program you sync your iphone to (i.e. Outlook, address book).
The iphone is not a stand alone device. It is designed to be synced with a computer. If you have not been syncing with a compatible program, then you are out of luck. Your contacts are not included in the back-up because it is meant to be synced with your computer.
"Although iTunes backs up most of your iPhone and iPod touch settings, downloaded applications, and other information (Contacts, calendars, notes, images in the Camera Roll), your audio, video, and photo content are not included in the backup."

  • Is there a way to create user logins or some other way to ...

Is there a way to create user logins or some other grouping for a set of applications to use (memory) resources optimally -- for example only mail and Safari and Word in one grouping and another for Safari and an audio recording application, etc.?

It is possible to use Parenal Controls to limit which applications can be used be a particular user account.
But it's not really necessary as far as managing memory.

  • My daughter has an iPod touch using my apple ID, I just purchased an iPhone with the same ID. Is there a way to keep my stuff seperate from her ipod but still share the iTunes account?

My daughter has an iPod touch using my apple ID, I just purchased an iPhone with the same ID. Is there a way to keep my stuff seperate from her ipod but still share the iTunes account? I was looking through the photo section on my iPhone and found pics my daughter has taken from her iPod. I do not want my pics, emails, etc to show up on her iPod. Is there a way to stop this from happening or do I have to create a different Apple ID for her to use instead?

If you have iOS 8 on all devices then:
If under 13 years create a new ID for her by:
Family Sharing and Apple IDs for kids - Apple Support
The use family sharing to share apps
    http://www.apple.com/ios/ios8/family-sharing/
Family purchases and payments - Apple Support
If underage and not i)S on all devices then you have to create an ID for here under your name and supervise it use:
Create a NEW account using these instructions so yo do not have to use a credit card.
Make sure you follow the instructions. Many do not and if you do not you will not get the None option. You must use an email address that you have not used with Apple before. Make sure you specify a birthdate that results in being at least 13 years old
Creating an iTunes Store, App Store, iBookstore, and Mac App Store account without a credit card
    More details of how:
    http://ipadhelp.com/ipad-help-tips-tricks/how-to-get-free-apps-from-the-app-stor e-without-a-credit-card/
Use the new ID on her iPod but only for:
    Settings>Messages>Send and Receive
    Settings>FaceTime
    Settings>GameCenter
and Settings>iCloud if you want her to have separate Contacts Calendar and some other things.
Continue to use the same/common Apple ID for Settings>iTunes and App stores so you can share purchases.

  • How do I move pictures off my phone without losing the pictures permanently?  Is there a way to keep the pictures in the cloud without them being on my device?

How do I move pictures off my phone without losing the pictures permanently?  Is there a way to keep the pictures in the cloud without them being on my actual phone?  I'm concerned that the sync feature will remove the pictures from the cloud when they are deleted from my phone.
    Thanks for the help.

Can I back up iPhoto to the cloud via some apple service (iCloud)
    No
or do I need to use something else?  If so, any recommendations?
    An external hard disk:
    Most Simple Back Up:
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
Slightly more complex: Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically.
Example of such apps: Chronosync - but there are many others. Search on MacUpdate or the App Store

  • Is there a way to keep my Mac Pro On the network without sleeping???

i'll try to explain this the best way I can. I often wish to access my Mac Pro over the network either for file sharing, or for use with Apple Remote Desktop. The problem is after about 20-30 minutes, the Mac Pro sleeps and disappears from the network. Is there a way to keep it on the network without turnig off sleep mode? I really don't want the hard drives working 24/7 if possible....
    Thanks in advance!
    JPT
P.S. I'm sure it doesn't matter, but just in case..I'm using the new Apple Airport Extreme base station.

In the Energy Saver pane of System Preferences, check the 'Wake for Ethernet network administrator access' checkbox under the Options tab, and then use an application such as this one to send it the signal.

You can go to Settings/iCloud and delete the account, then create a new iCloud account.  You can still use the same account for the app store though.

  • Is there a way to keep the search bar from unfolding downward?

I just updated to FF 34 and see that when I start to type something into the search bar it now unfolds downward, taking up about seven lines worth of space -- even though I have search suggestions disabled. The problem with this is that the unfolding covers up part of the urls, tab and top-of-webpage text that I sometimes reference (or even copy-n-paste) to guide my search-term selection. I usually use only my default search engine, so the disadvantages of this "obscuring" definitely outweigh any advantages from being able to more easily select an alternate search engine on-the-fly. In fact, one reason I used the search bar to begin with is to *avoid* the kind of unfolding behavior search engine pages often have. But it's actually more intrusive here, because it is covering up more pertinent text. Is there any way to keep this "unfolding" behavior from happening automatically when using the search bar in FF 34? Thanks

You can revert to the older Search Bar scheme like this.
Open up '''about:config''' ''(typed in the Location Bar)''
Right-click and toggle this preference to '''''false'''''
    '''browser.search.showOneOffButtons'''
    Then restart Firefox.
