Is there a way to locate an iPhone without the 'Find my phone' app?

I lost my phone this morning over a strip of 40 miles driving - phone was on roof. I did not already have the find my iPhone app on my phone and am wondering if there is an alternative way to locate the general location of my phone? Thank you.

No way other than looking for it.
