Is there a way to logarithmically stretch 4x3 to 16x9 in FCP?

Hi everyone-
I have recently re-telecined a 16mm film so I could get it as an HD master. it was originally shot and composed in 4:3 years ago.
HD is 16:9. The 16mm film, as I said, is 4:3. I am trying to find a way of changing the aspect ratio. I know I can simply strectch the horizontal, but then all the people are short and fat. I could zoom so the sides hit the edge of frame, but then I loose a lot of head room.
When I have played the 4:3 DVD on my 16:9 Panasonic TV there's a mode called "just" (I have seem simillar modes on other brands called "mesh"). It zooms in the image slightly and streches it logarithmically. The center of the image is virtually untouched. The sides are gradually further and further stretched as it moves further from the center.
Sure, some shots look odd (if a person walks from left to right of frame they will go from long and flat on one end to normal shaped as they go through the middle of the picture space to long and flat on the other end. But for 99% of the DVDs I have watched (and the over the air Standard def stuff) the method looks fantastic.
I think combining the three various methods on a shot by shot basis would be the best solution.
The problem is I haven't been able to find a way to do that "logarithmic stretching" on FCP. Has anyone here seen a way? Or is there a plug in that I can buy? Its seems like it should be a simple math based solution.
Thanks much,
David

I tried the "Too Much Too Soon Free Plugins" filters. The smart strech does do what it says, the big issue with it, is it has a very noticable line where the streching occurs. It's not a gradual stretch. In other words if you have a close up of a person, the center part of the screen is great. Unstretched. However, there's a soft fuzzy line about 2/3 of the way into the screen where suddenly it is completely stretched from there to the edge of the picture. Obvioulsy when the person (or camera) moves you can quite clearly see where the line is.
In effect, it kind of looks like what would happen if I took a 4x3 image on V2, did a soft crop of a few inches off the sides. Then on V1, took the same image and stretched it to fill a 16x9 frame. Then, matched where the soft crop line was.
I looked to see if I could either make the line softer (and less noticable) or even change where the "line" was. Unfortunately, it was a no on both counts... In fact, there are no user customizable options at all with the filter
Any other suggestions?
Thanks,
Dave

Maybe some one else can pipe up with a solution, but this would literally take 2 seconds to do for a new project.  And you can create a "template project" that includes this "text" clip.  Save this project and then to a get info and check "stationary pad."  When you double click on this file, fcp will open with a copy of this project and you just need to do a save as.
I've been working with computer editing systems for longer than i can remember and at a certain point you just have to adapt your workflow to the limitations of the software.

  • Is there a way to find out ALL the files an FCP project uses?

Okay. Firstly, I'm an idiot. I don't know why, but at the START of the project, I didn't think I'd end up with so many little tiny bits and pieces... so I didn't really plan the organization of this thing. (My next project will be meticulously organized, I can assure you.)
But, here I am, and here's my problem.
I've got a pretty big project I've been working on for six months that's probably taking up 250 GB of space on my computer (spread over two 350 GB hard drives). It includes 125 GB of source footage, hundreds of little Motion projects (including various "drafts" of each one), PSD images, LiveType files, an assortment of Soundtrack Pro files, AIFFs, exported clips from all the various cuts of the project, etc etc etc. Stupidly, I always saved things in different folders, using a system and thought process that "seemed like a good idea at the time".
Problem is, now that I'm (nearly) finished with the thing, I need to archive the "final cut", and all it's many source files (such as Motion projects, which may need to be edited later if this project gets sold into foreign markets, etc).
Suddenly, I realize how important Organizational Skills really are.
But is there a way (simple or not-so-simple) to find out EVERY SINGLE FILE that's referenced on a timeline? (I have lots of stuff imported into the project that I know isn't used on any timeline, but I'm afraid of moving or deleting things for fear of never finding it again.)
I'd love to get some sort of "printout" (a list or something) of every single file.
The idea is, I would then move ONLY those files to a newly-organized filing system, which could be easily archived/backed-up. It would also be great to keep the RENDER files, too, so that I won't have to re-render everything when I pull it out of cold storage.
Am I dreaming an impossible dream?
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

There is, go to browser and cntrl click on any one of the columns,
and select - show/source. A new column named "source" will pop up and will show where everything "lives". Click on the header at the top and it will justify the column as well. You'll notice this won't show anything for your seq.'s. of course, but will show stills/audio/motion files...
Once you have the new column, you can drag it next to the "name" column and get a grab of it and print it if you like, or whatever.
If you want to do this for just 1 seq., then can create a new bin and double click it to open it. Cntrl-A (select all) in your main seq. and just drag all into the new bin. You will see only what's in that seq. with the "source" column right next to it.
From what I've read, you seem to get the MM thing and it's obviously what you'll need to do to archive as the guys said. But what your missing is a file path system to where everything resides.
Hope this helps and that I've read you properly,

  • Is there a way to transfer video from Aperture 3 to FCP 7?

When i first recieved my SLR i transferred all my video to aperture 3, thinking it'd be easy to connect it to FCP 7...while it is, i realize the codec differences/it lagging when i try to edit the footage. it's frustrating! I've since realized that Logging and Transferring is the way to go, editing is a lot smoother that way.
Is there any way I can get those video from aperture (v3) to Final Cut Pro 7? I don't have the original files anymore so the ones in the Aperture Library is all i've got left!
    please help!

Not within iTunes, no. You'd need to use other software to do that (QT Pro, for example).

  • Is There A Way To Crop/Stretch Either Horizontally Or Vertically?

So I figured out how to do the whole letterboxing thing but at end of my video I have promo shots of people that was filmed against a white background but because it was small I had it in wide figuring I would stretch image to take out the wall at white sheet.
Letterboxing by WIDESCREEN of MATTE doesnt work on images that are stretched so I had to make a MATTE COLOR SOLID for top and bottom but the top and bottom are cut off too much so I just want to stretch it horizontally but it only allows for both at same time. Is there a work around? Thanks.

I think what you are looking for might be in distort menu under the motions tab.
There are a list of values:
    Upper Left
    Upper Right
    Lower Right
    Lower Left
You are gonna have to play around with some values, but I believe that is the way to do what you are looking for.

  • Stretch 4x3 into 16x9

Very new at FCPX but reading and learning.
I have a single piece of file footage that was shot in 16 x 9 mode, BUT the camera had an issue and was captured and displays (and is showing up under video properties) as 4x3. So the people are obviously "tall and skinny". Therefore, I don't want to CROP it, I simply wish to "stretch" the footage to fit the otherwise 16x9 project. When I drop it into a timeline of an otherwise 720x480 project, it will not left me right click and make it into a compound clip (I simply get the "bong" tone). Also the fit / fill / off selection does not help (see, I am reading!!!)
Ideas I can try would be much appreciated...This is just my 2nd project and it's a bear.
I am going to push on and come back to fix this hopefully wish your suggestions. Can't thank you enough. These are a great group of kids that deserve to be on this video!!!!

May I suggest to learn-from-square#1, like a stupid noob? All my silly joking about "compounds-are-evil" aside, you're quoting it DOES show me, you're still deep rooted into folders, pre-comps, bins, etc etc etc ...
FCPX offers some fundamental differences! And re-enacting habitual workflows makes you miss some major advantages the new/different UI offers. A very fast way learning it are the tutorials from ripple-training. They offer many advice cost-free on YouTube - spend an hour or two with Mark&Steve and you'll have some real 'AHA!!'-moments...
And there are other, excellent sources, my actual favorite is 'drawers' vs. tagging:
    www.fcp.co/final-cut-pro/tutorials/1436-...-with-michael-garber
    .. and there's no need for compounds.... (<<< I know, that's not true… )
    try opt-cmd-down arrow instead ...

  • Is there a way to display and export SOURCE timecode in FCP X?

We need to burn DVDs with the SOURCE timecode of our media files displayed.  So far, all we've found is a way to apply a Generator that reflects the PROJECT TC.

Sorry, but this is not possible in FCPX. They didn't include it.

I transferred video from iPhone (4S) to iPhoto and then dropped that footage into iMovie9.  The footage is there in iMovie but it is stretched.  I have tried to adjust using aspect ratio options but that doesn't work.  Is there a way to fix that in iMovie (or at any other point in the process)?

It shouldn't be this way.  Did you shoot the video in portrait or landscape mode?  Many people shoot in portrait mode because they typically hold the phone upright.  This is really shouldn't happen if the videos are shot in landscape mode.

When using the "Fill & Sign PDF" feature, is there a way to stretch to size the text box on a specific area of the page...instead of the text box going on in one straight long line....? I'm not seeing there's an option or ability to do so, just wanting to confirm.

Improving the handling of multiple line text fields is in our plans, but for now, you will have to add manual carriage returns (Enter).

  • Is there a way to stretch a background image rather than repeating it?

I have a one celled table with a background image.  It's really just a gradient strip (gradient going from top to bottom - ending in fade to white).  I want the image to continue all the way across the page.  If I set it to repeat via X, somehow you can see where the repeat begins... so I was wondering if there's a way to just stretch the image from left to right to force it to fit exactly to 98% of the window no matter how big the window is.
    Thanks...

That's not entirely true. With CSS, you can stretch a background image to any dimension:
    background-size: 10px 100%;

  • Is there a way to move everything forward when you stretch select layers?

    Hi,
I have a comp with multiple animations happening.
At some places in the comp I want to make layers appear longer.
When I select these and stretch them - the remaining layers need to move forward in time to compensate.
This doesnt happen and so the stretched layers over lap with upcoming (in the time line) layers.
Is there a way to do this?
    Thanks in advance
    Kal

You can command-select the layers you want to move and drag them forward or backward in time. It's easy. There is no way that I know of to do this automatically if you stretch a layer. AE does not have insert-and-ripple capabilities like a video editor does.
Place or move a layer in time
The layer duration bar represents the layer duration visually. The In, Out, and Duration columns in the Timeline panel represent the layer duration numerically.
    Note:
To choose which columns are visible in the Timeline panel, choose Columns from the panel menu, or right-click (Windows) or Control-click (Mac OS) a column heading.
These procedures move the entire layer in time.
To set the In point or Out point numerically, click the number in the In or Out column for the layer in the Timeline panel.
To move the In point or Out point to the current time, Alt-click (Windows) or Option-click (Mac OS) the number in the In or Out column for the layer in the Timeline panel.
To move the In points of selected layers to the beginning of the composition, press Alt+Home (Windows) or Option+Home (Mac OS).
To move the Out points of selected layers to the end of the composition, press Alt+End (Windows) or Option+End (Mac OS).
To move selected layers one frame later, press Alt+Page Down (Windows) or Option+Page Down (Mac OS). To move selected layers 10 frames later, press Alt+Shift+Page Down (Windows) or Option+Shift+Page Down (Mac OS).
To move selected layers one frame earlier, press Alt+Page Up (Windows) or Option+Page Up (Mac OS). To move selected layers 10 frames earlier, press Alt+Shift+Page Up (Windows) or Option+Shift+Page Up (Mac OS).
To move the entire layer in time by dragging, drag the layer duration bar to the left or right. To snap the layer duration bar to significant points in time (such as markers, or the start or end of the composition), Shift-drag the layer duration bar.
    Note:
When you drag a layer in the Timeline panel, the Info panel displays the name, duration, change in time, and In and Out points for the layer.
Before and after dragging the duration bar
Jeff Almasol provides a script on his redefinery website with which you can move selected layers as a group, aligning the group to a specific time in the composition.

I'm a complete beginner in iMovie. I was at an event and forget my camera and only had my iPhone to record an important event, so I used it, but now that I'm trying to upload it, iMovie is stretching the visual width (I guess the way it cropped it?). So I created an animation with a guy swing his left arm back and forth. The problem is his arm is swinging too fast. Is there any way I can extend the whole action, rather than deleting all the keyframes and redoing it?
    Thanks!

You should be able to click down and drag keyframes down the timelime to spread them out.  Also, you should be able to insert frames between keyframes (select frames between -> right click the selection -> Insert Frames).
