Is there a way to move iphoto libary to external but still use on orginal hard drive?

Basically what I want to do is move my pictures from my laptop's hard drive to an external because I have so many and then keep using iphoto on my laptop but without all the older photos on it. I don't want to have to plug my external in every time I want to transfer pictures from my camera to my laptop. I wasn't sure what the best way to do this was? Or if this was even possible?
I'm using iPhoto '09 verzion 8.1.2 if that makes any difference?
Thanks! Any help is greatly appreciated.

Here's one way to do what you want:
1. Quit iPhoto.
2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the external drive.
Now you have two full copies of the Library. To choose between them:  Hold down the <b>option (or alt)</b> key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
3. On the Internal Library, remove the pics you don't want with you all the time.
Now you have one full library on the external and another smaller sub-set on the Internal.
A couple of comments:
a. The external disk needs to be formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
b: When you're removing the unwanted pics from the Internal Library you need to delete them in batches of about 100 or so. Trashing more at one time can cause problems with the database.
c.
Managing Multiple Libraries - including moving pics/albums/rolls and metadata between them - is greatly facilitated by using iPhoto Library Manager

No, Photo Stream is syncing with iCloud. The most recent 1000 photos in iCloud will be buffered on your mac, even if you do not import them to your photo library, if you enable My Photo Stream.
See this link:   iCloud: Photo Stream FAQ
iCloud pushes all your photos to the My Photo Stream album on your devices and computers, and manages them efficiently, so you don’t run out of storage space.

  • Is there a way to move apps to new laptop but still keep them in old one?

I have a MacBook Pro and want to buy a MacBook Air. Is there a way to transfer my Mac store apps to new comp while still having them in my old one. I know about migration assistant but does that remove them from the old computer? If I download them would I need to pay for them again?

You can copy them to another computer, and you can re-download purchased apps at no extra charge. Migration Assistant does not remove files from the computer that is migrated.
To re-download your purchased applications just log into the App Store with the Apple ID used to purchase them. Click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You will find all your purchased applications listed with an Install button to the right.

  • Is there a way to move files on to my EHD (previously used for windows)

I have a macbook air. I have always used windows laptops and therefore my EHD, which has all my pictures on it, is not for mac. Is there any way to move all my pictures from iPhoto to my EHD? I have tried exporting and dragging them and it just does not work. I would hate to have to have all my pictures on two separate EHD's. My husband uses a Windows laptop so I'd like us both to be able to use it. I understand you can partition them but It is already so full of stuff, i don't want to have to wipe it.
    Can anyone help?

How is the EHD formatted?  For it to be used by the Mac and Windows it needs to be FAT 32 (DOS).  If it is FAT 32 then you can export your photos out of iPhoto to folders on your Desktop and drag those folders to the EHD for storage.
If the EHD is formatted NTFS you'll need 3rd party software in order to be able to write to the disk.
You cannot copy an iPhoto Library to the EHD. Any format other than OS X Extended (journaled) will corrupt the library.

  • Just started using Lightroom 5. Is there a way to have imported photo changes in Lightroom automatically happen on my hard drive (MAC), this includes develop/editing changes and location changes. Do I have to import them a specific way or have a change se

Got tired of iPhoto and finally committing to using lightroom. Using the Lightroom 5 i purchased last year and want to commit to making it my primary way of managing and editing all of my photos ( about 8K). Is there a way to have imported images from my hard drive/Finder (MAC) show as the edited or moved image when i am working in lightroom? Basically want what i am doing in Lightroom to be reflected on my hard drive and vice versa so that i don't have to "add" or "copy" every time I want to work in lightroom.

    No need for apprehension Heath.
Unfortunately Lightroom does have certain limitations:
A particular catalog can only be accessed by one instance of Lightroom at one time.
    (ie it is not designed for multiple simultaneous access.);
As far as I am aware a catalog cannot be accessed remotely although images can be.
Victoria Brampton has a solution using Dropbox where both the images and the catalog are stored on Dropbox.
Individual users download the catalog to thier workstation and work on images etc and then shut down Lightroom and update the catalog back to Dropbox.
No one else should acessing the catalog or images while one user is using the catalog and images otherwise a conflict will arise and someones work will be erased.
Disclaimer: this sort of setup is NOT supported by Adobe and is not risk free (for more reasons than I have elaborated).

  • Is there a way I can get the "Free Space" back without completely restoring my hard drive?

    Hi!
After having a terrible experience with Windows 8.1 on Boot Camp (Windows would always fail to boot), I tried restoring my partition with the Boot Camp Assistant and it would not work. Shortly after, I went to the Disk Utility to restore the Boot Camp partition and it was just "Free Space". I have Googled many different solutions, and am not sure what exactly to do. If possible at all, I would just like to know if there is any way to get back the "Free Space" without having to retire my entire hard drive.
Here is a screenshot of my Disk Utility...

Enable Disk Utililities Debut menu by entering the following command in the Terminal window followed by the Return or Enter key:
    defaults write com.apple.DiskUtility DUDebugMenuEnabled 1
Then select the Show Every Partition option in that menu:
That will give you the following in the left hand pane:
Click on each of the icons and you'll get the capacity of each volume and the used/free space on the working volume (Toad Hall in the screenshot).

  • My iMac is just old enought that I cannot upgrade to Yosemite.  I s there a way to force this or do I have to investigate a new hard drive or even a new computer?

My iMac is runnng 10.6.8.  I would like to upgrade to Yosemite, but the processor is a 2 Ghz Intel core duo.  Anyone have a suggestion?

Your Core Duo processor cannot support any Mac OS version higher than OC 10.6.8. Nothing you can do other than buying a newer model can change that.
Check the processor name again, if it says "Core 2 Duo" --the "2" being the key factor--you have options that are less expensive.

  • Is there a way to move mp3s back from the iPod?

I can transfer to my ipod fine, however I had removed a good deal of my music from my PC hard drive as I had it on my ipod. Is there an easy way to move select music back from my ipod to my PC hard drive?

I made a noob mistake and created at topic for something there was already a topic for. However I wanted to clarify what I am trying to do. I realize that my ipod is mapped to a drive with windows, however the ipod changes the names and seemingly randomly places the songs within its directory structure. I would like a way to move mp3s back without the hassle of manipulating this system.

  • Is there any way to retrieve photos that were put in the trash can and then it was emptied?  Or is there a way to move photos from an imovie to iphoto?

Is there any way to retrieve photos that were put in the trash can and then it was emptied?  Or is there a way to move photos from an imovie to iphoto?

If you've emptied the trash, ehtn no. However if you have a backup, like Time Machine, or a recent backup copy of your photo library you could recover the photos from the trash.
The answer to getting a snapshot form iMovie depends on what version you have.
I should add it technically may be possible to recover the emptied trash, but if you really want to do that you would need to download a utility software that can attempt to recover deleted files. Do it soon before you start writing more data to that disk. At the moment I don't have a recommendation for such a program. Maybe someone else out there will offer suggestion.

  • I imported photos from an old iPhoto (2001) to photo library and can now see them as thumbnails but not when I click on them. The screen is black cannot see or print either. Is there any way to salvage those old photos? I now use iLife09. OS 10.6

I imported photos from an old iPhoto (2001) to photo library and can now see them only as thumbnails but not when I click on them. The screen is black cannot see or print either. Is there any way to salvage those old photos? I now use iLife09. OS 10.6

Did you import the old iPhoto library into the new one? That's not what you want to do because you will import all of the original, modified and thumbnail files as if they were original files. Lots of duplicates and useless small photos.
Do you have a backup copy of the library that you imported into to?  If you do then bring it in and then use  iPhoto Library Manager to merge the two libraries into a new, 3rd library.
If you don't then you'll have to try to fix the current one and then cull out the duplicates and small useless photos as follows:  make a temporary, duplicate copy of your library and apply the three fixes in order as necessary.
    Fix #1
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your HD/User/Home()/ Library/Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your HD/User/Home()/Library /Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
    Fix #2
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #3
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
If this doesn't fix the problem you'll have to start over from scratch and create a new library from the files inside the Originals folder of your current library.  But first you should cull out the small photos that would be the thumbnails from the 2001 library.
Move the Originals folder to the Desktop, open and do a search for Kind=photo, File size is less than 10 KB.  That should find all of the thumbnail files which you can then drag to the Trash.  You might have to make that less than 50 KB. Then Import the remaining photos into a new iPhoto library.

I work on dual screens on a new mac pro but when I do the 4 finger swipe it moves both screens, is there a way to move just the screen that is active?

Multiple desktops and dual screens really aren't meant to work together. Apple came up with this multiple desltops feature and never really thought about users that use a dual monitor setup. So use either multiple desktops OR dual monitors but not both. Also don't try to use any App in Full Screen Mode as that doesn't work with dual screen setups either.
