Is there a way to open old Excel 2004 files in Excel 2011?

I recently bought a new MacBook Pro running Mountain Lion, and installed the latest version of Office 2011 for Mac. THEN I discovered that some of my older Excel workbooks, created on my ancient PowerBook G4 back in 2007, WON'T OPEN. I get a message saying that there is an error, and then Excel crashes. I really need to get access to this workbook on my new computer! It opens just fine in older versions of Excel, no corruption issues at all. It's just when I try to open it with my new laptop and Excel 2011. Does anybody out there have a workaround for me? I have loads of data in this spreadsheet and now no way to access it! Help!

Make sure Office 2011 is fully updated. It shouldn't have a problem opening those documents.
When I open a 97 - 2004 workbook, it states that it needs to be converted. That may be what is crashing on your copy of Office.
Have you tried creating a new account and see if you can open them there.

install iM04 on your home computer :-/ (you can run both apps on one machine, but I recommend to install a second account for your daughter)
because iM05 has a totally different system to handle the clips ("non-distructive editing") plus a different file-system (.pkg instead of files+folders) there's no way from 5>>4
(except, you export the project as a .dv and import that into the other app but you loose the whole projects info as clips, transitions etc,)
no, 5+5, 4+4, or 4+5 you can import iM4 projects into iM5 once, single shot only
besides: great, your kids do such projects!! over here in Germany, we still use chalk and blackboards

That's a Microsoft program which requires Windows. You could run on your Mac if you install Windows on it.

There are presently several alternatives for running Windows on Intel Macs.
Install the Apple Boot Camp software. Purchase Windows 7 or Windows 8. Follow instructions in the Boot Camp documentation on installation of Boot Camp, creating Driver CD, and installing Windows. Boot Camp enables you to boot the computer into OS X or Windows.
Parallels Desktop for Mac and Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7. Parallels is software virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
VM Fusion and Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7. VM Fusion is software virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
CrossOver which enables running many Windows applications without having to install Windows. The Windows applications can run concurrently with OS X.
VirtualBox is a new Open Source freeware virtual machine such as VM Fusion and Parallels that was developed by Solaris. It is not as fully developed for the Mac as Parallels and VM Fusion.
Note that Parallels and VM Fusion can also run other operating systems such as Linux, Unix, OS/2, Solaris, etc. There are performance differences between dual-boot systems and virtualization. The latter tend to be a little slower (not much) and do not provide the video performance of the dual-boot system. Excel does not use the .xcl extension for any of its native file formats? The only files I've ever seen with xcl as the file extension were associated with embedded application code projects.
If this is in fact an Excel file, but an encrypted one, you cannot open it (in excel or any compatible application) without the decryption password.

iTunes and the iTunes Store won't have anything to do with your photos. Those would be stored only on your laptop unless you made a backup of some sort. If you didn't, and the hard drive in your laptop has failed, then your photos are gone unless you wish to pay a disk recovery service a lot of money to try and get them back.
As to your music, if you purchased it from the iTunes Store you can probably re-download it. Go to the iTunes Store, log into your account, and click the Purchases link under the Quick Links. From there you should be able to re-download some or all of your purchased content. Note that not all content has been licensed for re-downloading in all countries at this time. Maybe you can let her play on your computer where it may be easier to restrict what she can do, provided there's an OS X equivalent. Of course supervision is probably the safest solution until she is old enough to understand she shouldn't do anything that's not permitted. But then she'd probably be old enough not to need to learn her ABSs.

Ask them to resave as .xls
If they are polite enough, I'm quite sure that they may change their default format to .xls.

Whenever I try to right-click an object that's located on the right side of the screen, the pointer always automatically click whatever entry in the right-click menu which just happens to be under the pointer the moment the menu is opened. I noticed that the reason this happens is because the right click menu always forces itself to open on the right side of the pointer, and when there isn't enough space, the right-click menu will open underneath the pointer. Since this is horribly inconvenient, is there a way to open the right-click menu on the left side of your pointer?

Are you saying you have an icon on the far right side and when you rt click on it, your pointer ends up opening wherever it lands? That is a two step process, or normally should be at least a two step process. Do you have a Mouse in your Control Panel? You should check, because there may be some properties with which you can play. For instance, I can switch primary and secondary functions on my mouse buttons by checking a box.
When I rt click on right side, the menu opens on the left.
When I rt click on left side, the menu opens on the right.
In order for me to take an action, I then have to move to an area in that menu and click.

You would have to launch software that would accept audio from the microphone and transmit it to you in some fashion. ARD does not transmit audio itself. Another remote control solution such as Timbuktu might transmit audio, so you could look into that, perhaps.

You can install a VNC server on the PC and ARD can then take control of the system. It can be tricky to find a VNC system that will work with ARD, though, so search this forum for "VNC" for possible options. One of the applications that support Microsoft's remote desktop architecture such as their own Remote Desktop Connection Client for Mac or iTap Mobile RDP will probably work better, though.

First, as others have already stated.....make sure the checkbox is deselected for "open folders in tabs instead of windows" in Finder Preferences.
If you're like me and don't like tabs very much, there is a way to make folders always open in windows with a simple click (I'm using Mavericks 10.9.5). Go to a root folder (for example, the Documents Folder), open it, and select View > Hide Toolbar, then all folders within that root folder will open in a new window.
As an alternative method, any folder can be opened in a new window by holding down either Command Key while clicking the folder. But sooner or later you will forget to hold down that key, and then clicking on a folder will open in a tab (which will automatically resize the window and cause much aggravation).
The Hide Toolbar trick will also work with any folder present on the Desktop. It will make all folders inside that folder open in new windows.
To make the Applications Folder open in a new window when opening it from the menu bar at the top of the screen, you will have to open the main hard drive folder and use the Hide Toolbar trick. This will cause all folders inside it to open in new windows.

You can have multiple nodes open on a tree, so I guess you could open them all up on a button click.
Another option that might be possible is to use individual Accordians for each section and then use the click function to close the others.
