Is there a way to recover files deleted via rsync?

I ran rsync to back up my files to an external drive, but I made an error and wiped out some stuff I'd like back from the external. To be specific, I synced a desktop folder to the root folder of the external HD, wiping out its contents.
I do have a second external with backups on there, but it hadn't been updated since October, so I may lose some stuff. Any options for recovery?

Maybe possible, maybe not. Above all, don't do anything else with your Mac in the meantime, as any time it needs to create a new file, it will potentially overwrite what's left of one of the files you deleted.
Then you'll have to invest in an application like Data Rescue II or FileSalvage:

I had an old sparsebundle (380GB) saved onto an external drive.
I wanted to keep this old sparsebundle,
but when I went to run a new Time Machine backup to this external drive it deleted the old sparsebundle.
Is there any way to recover this deleted sparsebundle.
As I began to run the new Time Machine backup, it changed the name of the old sparsebundle
from xxxxx.sparsebundle
to xxxx.purgeable
then POOF it disappeared.
I cancelled the new Time Machine backup as soon as I saw the file extension change to .purgeable,
but even though the new Time Machine backup didn't seem to start (I cancelled it in time),
the old sparsebundle is gone.
I ran Data Rescue and all it could find is a file that is only a few KILObytes called xxxxx.in_process.
It would take a long time for the 380GB sparsebundle to be overwritten,
so I don't think that happened.
But can the old sparsebundle be recovered (and be usable)?

A sparsebundle is a disk image.. if the actual file info is wiped then I really doubt you can recover it. Since you ran a recovery software which has worked recovering stuff for me.. and it couldn't find it.. your only hope would be real data recovery centre.. but although they can get raw data off the disk how useful it would be is questionable.. sorry but I think it is gone.

You probably couldn't retrieve the deleted texts even if you had the phone, at least not without some expensive forensic software.
If there is a recent back up of his phone on a computer that you legaly have access to, you might have some luck with something like BackUpExtractor.

The Camera Roll is for temporary storage as with any other digital camera. Although photos in the Camera Roll are included with your iPhone's backup which is updated by iTunes as the first step during the iTunes sync process, photos in the Camera Roll can and should be imported by your computer ASAP. If you didn't sync your iPhone with iTunes since these photos were captured by your iPhone and the photos in the Camera Roll weren't imported by your computer, the photos are gone.
Depending on how wealthy you are, you can contact a data recovery service to see if they can recover deleted photos from an iPhone's flash drive, but you will pay an arm and a leg for this. Such a data recovery service is not cheap and with no guarantee the data will be recoverable.

What happened that you lost them?
If you have synced recently you could restore the iPhone and it will restore the camera roll to it's state at the time of that sync.

Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5.6 running on Windows 7 PC.
After importing a group of photos including JPG and RAW files from a memory card (which was later reformatted), I noticed that the photos ended up in a folder on the wrong external drive. Find an "undelete utility" (one such utility is called Recuva, but I have never used it) and see if it can recover your RAW photos. If you are going to do this, do not perform any other tasks on your computer except to find, download, install and run this undelete utility. If possible, download and install on a different drive than the photos were on. You can also try this undelete utility on your camera card.
While I'm at it, you might want to develop and implement a backup strategy, in which you don't delete from the camera card until you have TWO (or more) copies of your photos, on TWO (or more) different physical disks. And don't forget to back up your catalog file regularly and automatically.

My computer had a spinning wheel yesterday that would not go away, so I forced a shutdown (had done it before with no problems). However, now my computer goes straight to the diagnostic tool, and when I try to repair disk0s2, it cannot be repaired. I didn't have Time Machine automatically running, and my most recent backup is too old and I don't want to lose all of our pictures. Try using a data recovery product such as the ones listed here. Don't write anything else to the drive until the files are recovered or you choose not to recover them.

I had uploaded some photos onto iPhoto on the guest account for my visitors, intending to burn them on departure.
I updated my Mac with a system software update, which required reboot so I of course types in the admin username/password to do so.
I received no warning message "caution: all temporary files in guest account will be deleted if you logout" as if you logout directly from the guest account, so I had forgotten about the guest account wipe.
Just today I switched to the guest user, and was dismayed to find the files gone.
Surely there must be some way to recover these files? Can anyone help?!

They possibly still exist on the hard drive if you haven't overwritten that space already.
Your only hope is to try a file recovery program like Data Rescue 3 or some sort like that.
