Is there a way to recover hard drive data after backing up via Time Machine (from Time Capsule)?

iMac 27", Mid 2011
2.7GHz Intel Core i5
Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63b)
Apple Time Capsule (May 2012)
Greetings,
Is there a way to recover the most recent version of your hard drive, after you installed an earlier version. I accidentally restored to an earlier version of my Mac Book lap top and installed it on my iMac desk top. I installed the earlier version using an Apple Time Machine and Apple Time Capsule.
I see some recovery software online, but I'm not sure if I should buy one or if there's another way to approach this problem.
The restored version has some of my files, but it's 2 full years old!
Am I dead in the water?
I appreciate any advice you can offer on alternative recovery techniques or recovery software recommendations.
Sincerely,
Chuck "dying over here" B.

Hey R,
Thanks for the quick reply.
Unfortunately the whole time I thought the TM/TC was backing up correctly as the thing was starting and stopping as if everything was fine. I guess I was blinded by the little green light that was always on.  So actually it does not have a recent version of my iMac, - it only lists old 2011 and 2012 versions of my Macbook.   I suppose I screwed something up at setup, and as it was hard lined (via a T5 cable) into my iMac, and the Macbook was shut down in a drawer, I never realized the error.
The restored version is less than a Gig, so there's plenty of room left on the iMac (1TB HD). As such, I'm hoping that most of the files have not really been overwritten.
I'm willing to pay to have it professionally recovered, but is that even possible?

Whether or not you are able to recover the data off the drive yourself will depend on if the drive suffered any impact damage in the crash. You can buy USB SATA or IDE adapters (Intel and almost all G5 use SATA) that will let you connect your hard drive to a computer (like a flash drive) to see if you can recover the data. If the drive has suffered physical damage if may not mount.
If you know someone who has one of these adapters you could try using theirs, otherwise you could buy one but you take the risk of the data on the drive being non recoverable. Regardless, both are much cheaper than $1699!
(Alternatively, if you know of someone with a Mac Pro or PowerMac G5 they may be able to install the drive in their machine and try to boot from or mount it and copy the data off.)

  • Help! Need to recover lost hard drive data after creating a partition!

So, I'm the world's biggest idiot, and I was trying to reformat my hard drive so that I could bring the documents from my Mac to my PC.
All of the docs were perfectly organized in folders and subfolders a long time ago, and once that had been done, I deleted everything off of the MacBook itself. I never thought I'd have to move all of the docs to a PC, but alas, nothing ever goes the way we plan now does it?
Anyways, I created a FAT 32 partition not realizing it would delete everything I already had on the hard drive, so now I need to recover all of that.
Is there ANY way that I can recover all the data I lost?
    Pls respond.

When you create a partition, the partition is the erased so all content is lost.  There are data recovery services that may be able to recover the material, but they are very, very expensive, if they can even succeed with this kind of erasure.
Check and see if there are any hard drive data recovery services in your area.

  • Is there any way to recover old text messages after update

When i updated my new iPhone OS to the new system, i had to end up doing a restore. This wiped out all my info and while i have a backup on the computer. I can seem to find a way to recover old text messages via the iMessage platform. Is there any way to recover some of those old conversations? Some have sentimental value to them.

I just need the last month of texts and I had not backed up for several months.

  • Is there a way to retain the original date after editing?

I am using PSE 11 on a MacBook Pro, OS X (10.3). I have a lot of old pictures to edit, and they are in date order, which is how I want them.
However, when I edit a picture and save it, it moves it to the bottom, with today's date instead of the original date.  I have them set to save with the original as a version set.
Is there any way to retain the orignal dates, short of having to go in and reset the date on every picture after I save it?  I really want them to be in date order under their original dates.
BTW, I used earlier versions that were Windows-based, and this didn't happen.  When I saved them, the version sets stayed where they were.
    This is really frustrating!

I'd like an answer to this too.
    What's your problem exactly?
The 'date taken' is never changed by editing a picture.

  • Is there a way for my hard drive to show up in itunes?

MY hard drive is getting full on my computer and i was wondering if there is a way to have my external hard drive show up in itunes so i can play music off of it? Let me know thanks

I should have been clearer in my description. The drive will not be in iTunes as a device. You can feed iTunes from it. I have different folders in different locations on my external hard drive and internal drive that I keep my iTunes stuff in. They are not all in the music folder that iTunes lists. One thing to be sure of no matter where you point the *Tunes Music Folder location* to, turn off the *Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library* or you may end up with duplicates.

  • Hard drive died on my iMac how to retrieve from Time Machine

    HI,
My Hard drive died on our iMac (we were on Snow Leopard).  We replaced it with a larger Hard drive and the Tech put Lion on it.  Sorry if this is a dumb question, but how do I retrieve my entire back up from the Time Capsule.... I search and read something about a Recovery HD?  Do I have to have this?  Also as noted above, I have the Snow Leopard from when we got teh iMac, but are on Lion now.....
    HELP

    LOL - I think I have a different/new related problem....
The instrucitons don't say anything about timemachine, but I read somewhere that you need to stop a back up when you get a new computer and want to transfer files....  and that the migration rebuilds the data from the latest successful back up...(thats a little back ground).
    Where I am now:
last night the migrations said it would take 29 hrs.  No problem....this morning there was not much change in that (considering 8+hours had passed) but did not think much of that either...
I was browsing on the internet and suddenly I get a notifiaiton that the back up failed!  oh god I think - surely its not supposed to back up while its migrating....?!?
then a few minutes later the migration window says it has 49 hrs to go...
then a little later it says its finished...so I check the folders - nothing is there....so I start to get a little concerned....and decide to start over.
so I start the migration process and when I get to the window where it asks where to put the stuff from the migration, I assume I am doing the same thing so click the same thing I did last time and it tells me you already have stuff there...wha? but I just checked...there is nothing there - so I know I am doing something wrong and back track - AHA - it has put everything into a user account called XXX.  so I decide to log out and see what's happening....sure enough another user account has appeared....and it has the same icon as our old stuff ! yay...!
but heres the rub: we previously only had 1 user account for the whole household, with one password which we did not even have to use....when the hard drive crashed, the repair guy created a user account under MY name, and used our old password.  Did not think much of it but when I logged out as ME and tried to log is as US (the old User Account), it would not accept the old password!...So now what....?

  • New hard drive - how to import iTunes and Mail only from Time Machine backup

    Hi
I am installing a new boot drive into my MacPro.  When I do this, I only want to copy over initially Mail and iTunes as previously backed up in Time Machine.
Is there an simple way to do this without a complete copy of my last Lion install going on the new drive?
    Thanks in advance.
    Matt

The music sync is one way - computer to ipod.  The only exception is itunes purchases.
Copy everything from your backup copy of your computer.

  • Is there any way to recover deleted photos, etc after a sync?  iTunes didn'

let me say I hate that Apple software tends to give a button to push w/o options or other vital information. It's an example of making things too simple.
I synced my new iPhone with the older iPhone it replaced - not knowing it would delete everything off the old phone. I'm most wanting my photos back. I've tried downloading 3rd party data-recovery software, but it never seems to find the iPhone like it finds external cards or cameras.
Please, Please, is there some app that will work to recover deleted photos? And I think I will never trust Apple software again!

I synced my new iPhone with the older iPhone it replaced - not knowing it would delete everything off the old phone.
It is not possible to sync one iPhone with another.
You can transfer the backup for an older or existing iPhone to a new iPhone but doing so does not touch or delete anything off the older or existing iPhone. There is no device limit for the number of iPhones that can be synced with the same iTunes library and iTunes account on the same computer and each iPhone can have its own sync preferences with iTunes. Syncing one iPhone with iTunes does not touch any data on another iPhone.
Photos in the iPhone's Camera Roll can and should be imported by your computer as with any other digital camera. Photos in the Camera Roll are not touched during the iTunes sync process except for being included with the iPhone's backup which is updated by iTunes as the first step during the iTunes sync process. The only way to delete all photos from the iPhone's Camera Roll is by using the iPhone's Erase All Content and Settings option, or by restoring the iPhone with iTunes as a new iPhone or not from your iPhone's backup. If you restore the iPhone with iTunes from your iPhone's backup, the photos that were in the Camera Roll would be restored along with all other data that is included with the backup.
Syncing one iPhone with iTunes does not touch any data on another iPhone that is synced with iTunes on the same computer and it is impossible to sync one iPhone direct with another iPhone.

  • Is there any way to recover my Outlook data?

    Hi everyone,
I have a problem with Outlook 2007. I am trying to import a data file that I have placed on my desktop called outlook.pst. I am getting an error message stating " C:\...\outlook.pst is not an Outlook data file (.pst).
The Outlook.pst is outlook file but its saying is not and outlook file. Is there anything wrong? That sounds weird. ScanPST.exe after launch, says that can't repair the file.
Please post if you have any suggestion. Thank you.

    Restore manually
    Choose File-> Open-> Outlook Data File…
Browse to the location where you’ve restored the pst file. For instance:
    D:\My Documents\My Outlook\Temp
You’ll now see an additional set of folders added to your folder list which you can expand. Expand the list and select the Inbox folder
In this folder select the messages you want to restore to the original Inbox folder
Drag & drop them to the default Inbox folder
Do the same for the Contacts folder. You might want to set your view to a list view so you can easily select and move the items.
    Outlook 2007 and previous
    View-> Current View-> Phone List
    Outlook 2010 and Outlook 2013
tab Home-> group Current View-> List
Now that the importing is complete, right click the pst-file in Outlook added in step 2 and choose Disconnect.
Restart Outlook and remove the export.pst file from the Temp directory if desired.

  • Is there a way to tell if the date on a picture in iPhoto is from actual metadata vs just the date it was imported to the program?

I have many photos in iPhoto whose dates I know to be wrong and many appear to be the date I moved them all to a new Mac. I photos in question, I think, were originally on a PC and in Picassa. If it was taken before metadata was embedded, I suppose I can just guess and change the dates on the photos however, if iPhoto just applied the date of the transfer to the Mac, perhaps there is accurate metadata somewhere that I could retreive. How can I tell where iPhoto is getting its dates for pictures?
    Thanks,

If the Exif metadata is intact, then iPhoto gets the date from there. If it's not, then iPhoto gets the file date.
So, if iPhoto is showing you the date of import there is no Exif intact.

  • Recovering Hard Drive Space?

    Hi all,
I was wondering if there's a way to recover hard drive space after emptying the trash?
My macbook tells me that I have 1.39Gb of free space, so I went around deleting some videos, and then empty the trash.
However, I checked how much free space I have left, it's still 1.39Gb after emptying the trash, and I'm sure I've deleted around 10Gb worth of videos.
However, I notice that if I log out and then log back in, I get the space back.
I was wondering if I could recover the hard drive space without actually logging out.
    Thanks in advance~

Operating with such a small amount of free space is quite dangerous and can result in directory corruption. I recommend you start be repairing your hard drive and permissions:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger, and 4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.1 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Normally you need at least 10 GBs or 15% of the hard drive's capacity as free space whichever is greater. Too little free space is hazardous to your hard drive's health and will cause OS X to run slower. If you are running out of space then you need a larger hard drive.
