is there a way to run a external ssd with my mid 2011 iMac hdd in a raid configuration and basically have a fusion drive

A Fusion Drive is not a RAID; it's a CoreStorage logical volume group. While it's technically possible to do as you suggest, there would be little or no benefit from it.

  • Can I use 2 external displays on new mid 2011 iMac?

I'm thinking of getting the new 27" iMac with the 2GB video card. It lists in the tech specs two thunderbolt ports and a mini display port, but the images only show the two thunderbolt ports, so I assume Apple is counting one of those as being the dedicated mini display port. I'd like to be able to use an additional two external displays with this iMac, though one extra would be fine. I see on the video card manufacturers website, they say it can "theoretically" drive 6 displays, depending on output ports. Is this like on the Mac Pro tower that can drive 6 displays (3 displays from each video port, assuming you have 2 video cards)? Can the iMac drive 3 displays (internal and two external) off it's video port with the proper adapters, i.e. dual link dvi adapter, or just one extra external monitor? I'd be satisfied with one extra display, but being able to add a 2nd would be a nice help in Photoshop since the iMac doesn't have the anti-glare option like on the laptops. I'd like to keep the second thunderbolt port open for the upcoming thunderbolt raid storage enclosures. Thanks all for any help and information!

Thank you, I have read that I could daisy chain the HD RAID enclosure on one of the thunderbolt ports with another monitor, if the monitor were at the end of the chain, but I do not know if the other port would still simultaneously support yet another external display at the same time.

  • Is there a way to run IDS within Websphere to recieve messages through JMS, then invoke Documaker?  Configuring the IDS client to use JMS within websphere seems pretty straight forward, but I cannot find information on running IDS as a server to invoke Do

Looking to move the maintenance of our IDS instances which drive Documaker MRLs from the Unix command line to within a container ( Websphere ).  Using the IDS Java client with JMS is pretty easy.  I cannot see how I would be able to get an IDS server running within Websphere.

IDS is not designed to run in WebSphere or any other J2EE container. It is a standalone Java application that uses native code, allows to run custom code, reads and writes files on disk, starts other processes, etc. and as such is not exactly suitable to run in J2EE. Most of such actions are not enabled (at least by default) in J2EE due to security concerns. You could run it as a service on Windows or setup to start automatically on Unix.
What exactly do you want to achieve by it being in J2EE container? Perhaps there are other ways to do the same thing?

  • Is there a way to run a family network with multiple Apple ID's?

My wife and I (married one week) have both individually and together been using Apple products for awhile. I have been so pleased that I decided that
in our house I was going to slowly build an Apple network. Our base station is an Airport Extreme, I have two (soon to be more) rooms with in wall speakers that are wired to Airport Expresses for Airplay purposes, and two Apple TV's. I downloaded the Apple Remote app on my iPhone and have been extremely happy walking into a room and starting up music. I encountered a problem though and in my reading, it appears to be a terrible flaw in Apple's Home Share. My wife has her own Macbook and iPhone under her own Apple ID. And why shouldn't she? She has her own iWork for her job, contacts, email, Photo Stream, and settings. But now we live under one roof. While we are individuals, we are building a household. There are certain things like music and movies that we should not have to have two computers for. Her Macbook is work oriented and has very little media on it. My iMac however has been a central point for all media in the house. As I said before I use the Apple Remote app to control my computer for Airplay and to control the Apple TV's. Eager to participate, she downloaded the app, but my library does not appear because her ID is different. There was a time when she could play my library through her iTunes when she was on my network. All I had to do was give her my password. This is no longer the case. Before I get sent to the generic Apple FAQ, you should know I have read it. The suggestion to make seperate login accounts on my computer and share the library. This still keeps them seperate. She would still have to go into the office, and switch accounts and then return to the room where she was to start the music. And then I would have to change it back to regain control. She can still use Airplay to play what is on her phone, but there is very little media there and it is also a battery drain to do so. My iMac has steady power and steady signal. I am open to suggestions if someone has found a way around this issue. But Apple should know that for a company that advertises in promoting family, this restriction *****. I'm sure they do it in the name of anti-piracy, but their 5 device rule and super security already did that.
    Terry Monaghan

Think of all this as two entities, 1. your Apple ID's and 2. Apple services (and by services I mean iCloud, iTunes, Home Sharing, Messages, FaceTime, Support Communities etc etc).
You can choose to use a different ID for each service, thereby creating the flexibility you are looking for.
For iCloud (which syncs contacts, mail, calendars etc) I suggest you each use your own ID, this means you will have your own contacts etc.
For iTunes, you might use separate ID's or you might both use the same one, I make no suggestion here because there are benefits to both ways. You may want to keep your music, movie, books and app purchases separate or you may want to unite them to avoid potentially paying for things twice.
For Home Sharing I suggest you use just one ID, it doesn't matter who's it is, so long as you both use the same one, this will ensure that any device using home Sharing can see and play the content from anyone's library on the same network (regardless of which ID it uses for iTunes) that is logged into the same home sharing account.

  • Is there a way to change the icon associated with icloud account?

Is there a way to change the icon associated with my iCloud account? It's currently a rose and i do not like it.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
Are you referring to your iCloud account picture or your user picture?
It looks like you are referring to your user picture. To change it, open System Preferences > Users & Groups, press the picture box and choose the user picture you want from the ones that came by default. If you want to select a different picture stored on your Mac, drag that photo onto the picture box.
If you want to change your iCloud account picture, open http://www.icloud.com and log in with your Apple ID. Then, press your name at the top right of the site and press the user picture. If you put the cursor on the picture box, you will see a button at the top of the box to change your picture

  • Is there a way that I can control iTunes with the iPhone without any internet connections?

First let me say that I am ready to throw this POS in the lake.  Is there a way that I can control iTunes with my iPhone without any internet connections?  On my houseboat I have a wifi router and want to connect my phone to my computer to control my music which plays from my computer through my stereo.  I can easily do it with my laptop without having to jump through any internet APPLE BS , but I dont want to have my laptop out on the deck. I just want to use the phone as a remote control.
Remote wont do it because it keeps saying Im not connected to the internet, even though is is connected to my computer.  Same problem with JumiAmp.

It should have an option to manage iTunes library without network connection, like Bluetooth or connect directly to the computer without a router or wi-fi, i live outsite of the city and i dont have the ability to control my iTunes librry from the iphone

  • HT1522 I have a mid 2011 iMac running Lion, and the remote seems not to work at all!

Have been trying to pair my Apple Remote with my mid 2011 imac.
Nothing doing, although if I go and try same remote with an older macbook, it works fine.Battery all fine too, have been checking via digital camera. Something on my iMac is preventing this remote form being seen (and yes I have disabled ir receiving on the laptom after testing it)
    any ideas?
    thanks for your time!!

Ok, sounds like the safe mode boot worked... You probably don't want to always be in safe mode though (some reduced functionality) so does it do a normal boot now? If not, you should then reboot into safe mode and run Disk Utility. Then select Macintosh HD on the left hand side, and click the Verify Disk button. If needed, it will ask you to Repair Disk. If there are errors found, Repair Disk again until there are none. Then try another normal boot and reply with result, wether good or bad.

  • Is there a way to use my external hard drive to run sounds from Mainstage2?

Is there a way to use my external hard drive to run sounds from Mainstage2?

TM can back up external HDs. If you have both of your external drives attached, go to the options in TM preferences. Be sure the data drive is not listed (this lists drives/folders to exclude from a backup). Then initiate a TM backup or wait for the hourly backup. That should back up the data drive.
You can only tell TM what to exclude from a backup, not what to include.

  • Is there a way to run a program designed for PC on my Mac?

I would like to use the Firearms Management System offered by one of my suppliers on my Mac but the only operating system shown to use is with is Windows. Is there a way to run it on my iMac?

    Sure, many:
    (Borrowed from Kappy)
    Windows on Intel Macs
There are presently several alternatives for running Windows on Intel Macs.
Install the Apple Boot Camp software.  Purchase Windows XP w/Service Pak2, Vista, or Windows 7.  Follow instructions in the Boot Camp documentation on installation of Boot Camp, creating Driver CD, and installing Windows.  Boot Camp enables you to boot the computer into OS X or Windows.
Parallels Desktop for Mac and Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7.  Parallels is software virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
VM Fusionand Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7.  VM Fusion is software virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
CrossOver which enables running many Windows applications without having to install Windows.  The Windows applications can run concurrently with OS X.
VirtualBox is a new Open Source freeware virtual machine such as VM Fusion and Parallels that was developed by Solaris.  It is not as fully developed for the Mac as Parallels and VM Fusion.
Note that Parallels and VM Fusion can also run other operating systems such as Linux, Unix, OS/2, Solaris, etc.  There are performance differences between dual-boot systems and virtualization.  The latter tend to be a little slower (not much) and do not provide the video performance of the dual-boot system. See MacTech.com's Virtualization Benchmarking for comparisons of Boot Camp, Parallels, and VM Fusion. Boot Camp is only available with Leopard or Snow Leopard. Except for Crossover and a couple of similar alternatives like DarWine you must have a valid installer disc for Windows.
You must also have an internal optical drive for installing Windows. Windows cannot be installed from an external optical drive.

  • Is there a way to run Internet Explorer on a Mac mini with mountain lion?

I need to access a professional website that only works with IE (don't get me started on THAT) I need to do billing using this site so need to have full functionality.  Is there a way to run IE on my mac mini with mountain lion?

The key takeaway here is that yes, you can access Windows 7 (and IE 9) from OS X Mountain Lion.
The crucial question is about your workflow. If you need concurrent access to both Windows 7 and Mountain Lion, then the Bootcamp solution included with Mountain Lion would not be the right choice. You would need one of the virtualization solutions.
If you need helpdesk support from a paid product, rather than entirely from a community forum, then the latest Parallel's Desktop or VMware would be a matter of choice, with Parallel's the better decision at this point. Either of these products are under $100, in addition to the cost of a Windows 7 license. You may need the Windows 7 installation media as an .ISO file, rather than on DVD. Check requirements.
By example, I use Oracle's VirtualBox (free) on Mountain Lion, with a Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit guest. The interactive and network performance of this Windows guest are more than adequate on my 2011 mini. I assigned 3 GB memory and 2 of 4 processor threads to the Windows 7 guest. I also restricted guest CPU use to 80%. VirtualBox is installed on my SSD, but the Windows guest is on an external HDD. That is not a default configuration. There are multiple choices for display; from full-screen 1920x1200 (mine) to an isolated resizeable window, to seamless integration with OS X. The Apple keyboard, bluetooth devices (trackpad/mouse), and printer all are recognized. I also have a shared OS X folder with VirtualBox, and copy/paste integration.
I use VirtualBox as it meets my support (forum) and functional requirements.
    Best wishes,

  • I was running KeyPassFox with Firefox 8.0.1, but the plugin does not work in the new release (9) . Is there a way to restore my previous version with all of my bookmarks intact? I do not mind if I have to restore the plugins myself.

I was running KeyPassFox with Firefox 8.0.1, but the plugin does not work in the new release (9) . Is there a way to restore my previous version with all of my bookmarks intact? I do not mind if I have to restore the plugins myself.
The plugin shows on the list as enabled and functioning, yet the tool does not show on the toolbar. It would appear that I need to restore the previous version of Firefox and wait until a newer release of the plugin is available before upgrading the browser.

I copied the iTunes file from the external drive and it's in both places.  I thought all I would need is the iTunes program (which I downloaded to new computer) and my iTunes library file.  There must be something else that's missing.  My iTunes library looks the same on the new computer as it does when I open it on the external drive.  If I click on an iTunes library song from my new computer, it will only play if I have the external drive plugged in.
My back-up drive is a mess.  I have multiple copies of music, video, photo, and document files and I don't know how that happened. ={  Obviously, I don't know how to back up stuff properly and there are back-up files extending over a 6- to 8-year period.  I think all I did was just drag and drop the main folders from the back-up drive to the same main folders on the C: drive.  Also (and I'm kind of fuzzy on this) Windows used to automatically save music files in a folder within my document files (which makes no sense to me).  As my Jewish friends would say, "Oy Vey!"

  • Is there a way of knowing which external drive ejects?

Is there a way of knowing which external drive ejects?
I have several external drives and when one ejects on it's own it usually immediately restarts again and does not give me time to find which one was the problem drive.
Is there a way of figuring this out?
    Thank you!

No unfortunately without restoring the library and running it there is no way to tell if it is good or not.

It's not just you, I can't authorise my phone. It seemed to go down just after I started the update (it wasn't my fault though). I am using chrome, and it does not seem to be a firewall issue, or the bannerblock issue that I read about else where, since I dont have that program installed. Strange though how the support forum is still running. If I go to http://www.apple.com/support I get nothing, but googling topics allows me to see em.

  • Is there a way to update an external dictionary for services without migrating the services

Is there a way to update an external dictionary for services without migrating the services
Is there a way to update a common external dictionary used by many services without migrating each and every service that uses the dictionary.  I have updated the table in the database and the external dictionary in our Development Environment. The external dictionary is used by many services. When I migrate the changed service to TEST/STAGE/PROD environments (NOTE: the table has been updated in the TEST/STAGE/PROD Databases), only the changed service is having the external dictionary updated. All other services that use the same external dictionary are NOT updated. I have the following questions
Is it possible to migrate dictionaries so that all the services which are using that dictionary are updated?
If the first one is not possible, Is there any other way to update the external dictionary without migrating all the services that use dictionary?

dont think so but I could be wrong
as it were I didn't like the build in audio so I connected some external logictech 2.1 speakers  but there
are times when I use headset so I bought this one
or any minijack splitter will work too so I have 2 things connected to the headset port works just fine
