Is There A Way To Split My Screen in Half?

I just bought an Apple 30" Cinema Display and I would like to split the screen in half so that I can (for example) have my mail displayed on the left side of the screen and another program (like Safari) displayed on the right side, rather than one in back of the other.
Is that possible? Do I need an application to do it?

Hey, thanks!! I didn't realize that the key is to not allow the two windows to touch and that if you close them at a certain size, they will remember and open at that size. That way they can't block each other. Great!

I have a macbook pro running 10.6 Snow Leapord, is there a way to split the screen like I could with my old windows computer? So I can watch or surf on one and another task on the other?

With the external screen connected and turned on, open the Displays pane in System Preferences. On the screen containing your menu bar, you should now see a Displays preference dialog box with an "Arrangement" tab in it. Click the Arrangement tab. Uncheck the box for "Mirror Displays," or make sure it is already unchecked. In the image within the preferences dialog box you should see two adjoining blue rectangles representing your two screens. A white bar on one representes the menu bar and indicates that that is the primary display. The larger rectangle represents your TV screen. If it's on the right side of the smaller rectangle representing your MBP's screen, then dragging a window off the right side of the built-in screen will move the window onto the TV.
Now open any application window — a web browser window, for example — and drag it by its title bar to move it off the edge of your built-in screen onto the TV screen. Got that? You can do the same thing with any other window, including a DVD Player or VLC window containing a movie that you want to watch.
Things to note: In this dual-display mode, which is called Extended Desktop mode, the menu bar and Dock will always appear on only one of the screens, and you can choose which one they appear on by dragging the white bar representing the menu bar from one rectangle to the other in the System Prefs > Displays > Arrangement tab. You can also set the resolutions of the two screens independently of each other. The highest available resolution on each screen will always provide the sharpest image.

You can select with items so sync if you dont want everything on there. Just click the iphone in itunes and click music. THere you can pick and choose what you sync.

Is there a way to access the screen (headless operation) of a machine being used as a Mac OS X (ML) Server?

I'm using ML OS X Server and so far have enabled only FIle Sharing. Is there a way to share a screen with the Mac Mini (server host) while in Server operation? What section(s) need to be enabled to do this? I can access the Server remotely using the Server app, but as yet have not configured the web app to manage the server. Even if I do, this will not allow me to run an app as I could while at the server machine's screen, keyboard and mouse. My goal to operate this machine almost full time headlessly.

This is something I've been wondering. I am a bit like you, I like being able to have a glance at emails or Facebook updates without having to log in, and I think it would be great to be able to turn off the notification switching the screen on, especially for emails as I do get a lot, and Facebook, but I somehow doubt it is possible.

i'd be inclined to leave things as they are. Managing app updates over more than one account in the same library or device requires you to sign in and out of each account in turn. You cannot transfer content from one account to another.

Is there a way to have the iphoto screen saver use the photos from a different iphoto user? My husband leaves his account open and he has only old photos when the screen saver kicks in. I would like to have my photos be able to pop up on his screen saver. I need to find them in the system preferences screen saver place, but have it access my iphotos and not only his. How? In short, no. The whole point of different accounts is to keep your data separate from his, and your photos are your data.
You could share a library? It can be a bit complex.
You can use Fast-User switching to switch over to your account - takes a couple of seconds
As to organising your Photos - iPhoto is a database and offers pretty much unlimited options for organising your pics, but it takes a bit of work to go beyond the basic and automatic.
If you take the time to assign Places then you cn see all the photos in your Library based on where they were taken. (Of course, that's of limited use if they're all taken in your backyard ) Faces means you can sort the Library based on who's in the Photos.
Beyond that, simple thigns like naming the Events will help - Xmas 11, Bobby's Wedding, Rome 2009 and so on. You can then search on those basic words in the search box.
After that: Keywording. The following is a canned answer I use to describe my system. It may spark some ideas for you.
I use Events simply as big buckets of Photos: Spring 08, July - Nov 06 are typical Events in my Library. I use keywords and Smart Albums extensively. I title the pics broadly.
I keyword on a
Who
What
Where basis (The When is in the photos's Exif metadata). I also rate the pics on a 1 - 5 star basis.
Using this system I can find pretty much find any pic in my 40k library in a couple of seconds.
So, for example, I have a batch of pics titled 'Seattle 08' and a typical keywording might include: John, Anne, Landscape, mountain, trees, snow. With a rating included it's so very easy to find the best pics we took at Mount Rainier.
File -> New Smart Album
set it to 'All"
title contains Seattle
keyword is mountain
keyword is snow
rating is 5 stars
Or, want a chronological album of John from birth to today?
New Smart Album
Keyword is John
Set the View options to Sort By Date Ascending
Want only the best pics?
add Rating is greater than 4 stars
The best thing about this system is that it's dynamic. If I add 50 more pics of John to the Library tomorrow, as I keyword and rate them they are added to the Smart Album.
In the end, organisation is about finding the pics. The point is to make locating that pic or batch of pics findable fast. This system works for me.

Is there a way to blow up screens no matter what app I'm in so I can see

I recently suffered a mini stroke and it effected my eye sight so now I cannot read small print even with my reading glasses. On the iPad, I can blow up the screen in most cases but some apps like Facebook I cannot allow you to blow up the screen. Is there any way to blow up the screen no matter what app I'm in??
Also, kind of related to not being able to see...I recently discovered iTunes Radio. I was going thru and adding playlists to my stuff. Seemed easy enough. Until I reopened it today and I see "purchased" next to the only one listed playlist there. Now, I picked about 5 or 6 from their list of recommended list and did not once see anywhere where I was going to be charged. Now mind you my eye sight is messed up but what happened to the little box that would pop up and ask you if you were sure you wanted to make this purchase?? How can I get that back?
And, finally, since I've made this purchase unknowingly, to an account that has no money in it, how do I change my billing info with Apple?

Is there a way to split clips in the Event browser? (audio-synch related)

It seems there is no way to split an event-clip (a clip that appears in the Event browser). You can split Events--but only if they consist of more than one clip. And then you can only split them between two clips. People who have transferred analog video tapes (e.g., Video8) to their computers with the help of iMovie end up with Events that are the same length as their video tapes. So this usually means 2-hour events (consisting of one clip). But iMovie has a synchronization problem for such DV files. This problem would be mitigated by having shorter events. Hence the desire to split events. I thought a read somewhere a workaround for splitting event-clips, but if was a few months ago. I wouldn't think there is any reason we cannot split event clips, other than a preference for non-destructive editing. But a bit of destruction may be worthwhile if it improves synchronization. Does anyone know a way to split clips in the Event browser?

Is there a way to stop the screen from updating till the code is executed?

My extension needs to export all the layers to PNGs and it creates a lot of moving around in the screen while the operation is complete (eg: switching between layers, cropping the images, etc). I've set the Playback mode to Accelerated as well.
Is there a way to not update Photoshop UI during the process? (I have seen similar functionality in Microsoft Excel/VBA scripting)

As a shameless hack: put a layer on top, fill it with the color you like the most and that will prevent the document from revealing what's going on below.
It's a bit like hiding the dust under the carpet, there might be cases when you need to turn it off (e.g. merge on top) but for basic stuff it does the job.
Besides that, there's a undocumented "viewless document" or something like that, but you can do very limited processing - XBytor wrote something on ps-scripts.com years ago.

Is there any way to change the screen resolution in Front Row?

Hi all,
I've got a Mac Mini plugged in to my TV, and I want to be able to change the screen resolution depending on the content I'm watching (as some content is in 4:3 aspect ratio, some is in 16:9, and I'd prefer to have the picture filling the screen completely). Unfortunately, the TV doesn't have a "stretch" mode for making an 4:3 picture fit a 16:9 aspect ratio. If I know what I want to watch in advance, I can set the resolution accordingly using system prefs on the mac, but if I'm just sitting back choosing what to watch with the Apple Remote, it's annoying to have to leave front row, walk over to the computer and change resolution once I've decided what to watch, open system prefs, change resolution, re-launch Front Row and find what I wanted to watch again.
So I was wondering if anyone had figured a way to allow the screen resolution to be switched from within the FrontRow UI. I've seen that people have written python based plug-ins such as PyeTV and Understudy that allow different types of content to be added to FrontRow, but I've not found any utility plug-ins such as what I'm looking for on the net (nor could I find SDK documentation on this API in the stuff that comes with XCode).
I guess the other approach might be quick keys: has anyone had any success hooking up quick keys macros alongside front row in response to apple remote events? (seems too few events to be able to choose from, but I've never tried it, so I won't assume!) Or how about is there a way to trigger an AppleScript from within Front Row? And, of course, I'm very open to any other ideas you might have!

I recently upgradedto ios 5 but in the process I deleted all of my pictures. I have faced the fact that my pictures are gone however, one of my favorite is still set to the lock screen. I was wondering if there was any way to retrieve this picture and store it in my album?

Is there a way to split a project?

I have made a project that contains my movie, my slideshow, and my blooper section all in one project. However, now that I want to make a DVD out of all this, I would like to separate each of the sections so that on the DVD menu I can just have a Movie button, Slideshow button, and a Bloopers button rather than having to watch them all at once. However, when I try to import the movie into iDVD, the whole movie gets added as one movie, and I thought there was a way to split the movie, but I haven't discovered it yet. Anyone know of a remedy for this?

Duplicate the Project twice, then delete the appropriate sections from each copy so that you finish with 3 separate projects, each containing the relevant section.
To duplicate a project, in the Project Library view (not Edit view) click on the project then go to the menu and select File>Duplicate Project. Each time you duplicate, iMovie will use the same name as the original project but with a number appended - change the name as desired by clicking on the project to highlight it then clicking again so that the name is highlighted in light blue, then overtype with the new name.
If you prefer to keep the full original project intact in iMovie, duplicate it 3 times and use each duplicate for the 3 sections you require for iDVD.
