If the phone doesn't power on and isn't seen by the computer then you wouldn't be able to pull data off it with the USB connection to your computer.
You could pursue data recovery if the notes are very valuable, but the cost can be similar to having data recovered from a failed computer drive(possibly prohibitively expensive).

You three would do better to sync to google directly. Google has a blackberry app that will allow you to sync your contacts and calendars. The app isn't perfect, but it works reasonably well, especially if you're just using one calendar to sync.
Then there's plenty of ways to sync those to your iPad using Google, including Exchange, or simply adding it as a google account.
As for iCloud, there really isn't any supported or unsupported method to do what you're trying to do, at least at this time. If there is, it would definitely be a hack and I would be wary of risking your contact or calendar data on it..

You can sync the saves between devices by using the Apple sharing through iTunes to copy save games (and other items) on and off from a device.
- Connect your iPod/iPad/iPhone to your computer
- Open iTunes, then select the device in the panel at the left
- Select 'Apps' then at the bottom you should notice an area called 'File Sharing'
- Select 'FM 2012' or 'FM 2011' (depending on which game you have) from the apps listed and you'll see a handful of files in the panel on the rightAny ".dat" files are saved games and you'll have up to 5 of them. "hidden.dat" is the autosave file, while "fm_save1.dat" through to "fm_save4.dat" are manually saved files named according to their position in the save slots.

If one is running Outllok on a Mac machine then it is not possible to sync the contacts with iPhone. It is strange that Apple distributors are promoting and offering machines with promise that Windows users can now run MS Office on Mac machines without any problem. While this is true, it is so strange that one cannot sync the contacts from MacBook Pro to iPhone5. Not really. iOS devices were designed to sync to one iTunes account, not multiple accounts. Simply email what you want to your Desk Top and transfre them to your iTunes library on that computer. Or get a Dropbox account. You can download Dropbox on your iPad and have dropbox on your Desk Top and Laptop. You could access files, music, pictures, etc., you put in your Dropbox account from any device. You get 2GB free storage, but you can purchase additional storage if you need it.

I've been reading some of the other threads about this issue, but most, if not all, suggest using iCloud. I'm wary of setting up an iCloud account because I've heard that "once your information is 'in the cloud' it can't be deleted", and I just don't know how true that is.

I think that cloud privacy concerns are overdone - especially with Apple who don't have a vested interest in snooping through your data like Google does!
Do you use email? It's stored in the cloud on the providers servers - no matter who the provider is.
Do you use SMS on a phone? They're stored on a server somewhere!
Do you use the internet? The logs are stored at your ISP for some period of time - tracking everywhere you've been.
Thats why I am comfortable to use iCloud for most of my documents. If I want to transfer files very securely, I put them in an encrypted disk image on Dropbox.
