Is there a way to test a PRAM/NVRAM battery

I have a newer iMac that was not restarting after power failures automatically. I performed a PMU reset (or equivalent, ie unplug power cord for 15 seconds) which did not resolve the problem. I ended up zapping the PRAM and now my issue seems to be resolved. I've read that the parameter memory and nonvolatile memory can become corrupted which I assume my problem was. My office does have intermittent power outages that could have caused my problem, so we now have UPS battery backups on essential computers. My concern is that I may have ended up with a bad battery in my iMac and that is what could have caused the PRAM issue which in turn may have caused the restart after power failure option to fail. Granted my problem could just be a one time issue that will not happen again. Which brings me to my actual real question for the macintosh gurus who frequent this discussion:
Is there a way to test the PRAM battery without removing it from the machine?
I'm curious if the hardware test can determine if the battery is charging or working correctly or if there is a way to get some type of report using the terminal.

If you unplug the computer from AC for one minute, then plug it in and start it up (do not connect any network cable and be sure Airport was turned off before shutdown.) If the Date and Time are correct then the PRAM battery is OK.

Is there a way to test airport extreme for optimal function?

    In your Mavericks OS X.
Go to the WiFi icon on the top right.
Hold the option key and click.
At the bottom of the list you will see "Open Wireless Diagnostics"
Open this and you can diagnose your wireless network.
While it'sopen hit the Command + 2 and it will open the Utilities window.
This will give you and overview of interference and what channel is best.
You can alos run a speedtes over WiFi then run a speedtest directly connected with ethernet.

  • HT1595 cannot connect ATV to actiontec router with wired ethernet.  router does not see ATV.  is there a way to test the  ATV ethernet port on the back?

have an 3g ATV (5.0 4099) wired via coax cable to actiontec MI 424-wr router.  Router cannot see ATV.  Is there a way to test ethernet connector on back of ATV?  ATV does work when setup for wireless but its much too slow for actual use when configured that way.

    Steve,
I think the isssue is clearly that your router is not acting as a DNS Server.  You will need to contact Verizon to see how to configure it so that it does supply the DNS addresses.  If you can configure it in your Router try using 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 as the DNS Server addresses.  These point it to Google's Public Domain DNS Servers.  There are others (opendns.org).  But for now these will hopefully get you up and running.

Is there a way to test for network connectivity, which API to look into? Also, is there a way to test that code in the simulator, that is, to turn off the network in the simulator.

A peek in the docs would help- there is a TON of information there.

It's not just you, I can't authorise my phone. It seemed to go down just after I started the update (it wasn't my fault though). I am using chrome, and it does not seem to be a firewall issue, or the bannerblock issue that I read about else where, since I dont have that program installed. Strange though how the support forum is still running. If I go to http://www.apple.com/support I get nothing, but googling topics allows me to see em.

Yes you can still purchase replacement batteries your iPod from third party repair companies.  Apple does not offer replacement parts.
Do a Google search for iPod battery replacement and you should get a plethora of results.  There are many good deals on Amazon and eBay.

  • Is there a way to test the Firewire 800 port?

My firewire 800 port seems to no longer work on my Imac. Before bringing the machine to repair, I was wondering if there is any way to test the port, or to reset it. I remember I had a similar issue a few years ago and I could make it work again.
    Thank you for your help!

    Hi Felix
    1. Try resetting the FireWire bus as described in the +What to do if your computer won't recognize a FireWire or USB device+ article below:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1317?viewlocale=en_US
    2. Connect a FireWire device and open your *System Profiler,* then in the Hardware section select FireWire to see if the device is shown on the bus.

I am a BI newbie and was wondering if there is any way to test HANA...? Maybe a trial version or something? :S
or is the solution available to use for any sap partner?
I have been looking for something like the 30 day trial version of dashboards and crystal that you can download [here|http://www.sap.com/solutions/sapbusinessobjects/sme/freetrials/index.epx]. But I guess that is just too much to ask XD

Alejandra, if you are an SAP partner, than the easiest way is to contact your SAP partner manager and ask for availability of partner test&training licenses. You still might need to order pre-configured appliance from h/w vendor. Regards. -Vitaliy

  • Is there a way to check if the rechargeable battery is the original?  I have a feeling mine has been swapped out...

I have a feeling my rechargeable battery pack was secretly swapped out by another user (whose battery had died) - left for vacation working computer, returned from vacation battery not charging.  Is there any way to check (serial number, etc.) what battery came with the purchased computer?  Any help would be appreciated.

No, but you could check to see if the battery installed has about the same amount of charge cycles if you were paying attention to that number.

  • Is there any way to find out how much battery life you have on you're Bluetooth Magic Mouse and Apple Keyboard on your Windows Partion?

I'm a avid gamer and for my gaming needs most of the games that I love require Windows ,but due to my constant clicking I drain my mouse battery very fast so I always have backups. Is there anyway I can check how much mouse battery I have left so I can be sure before I start a gaming session that I'll be fine? Switching back and forth between partions is an option ,but I find it as more of a last resort then something to do normally.
    Thanks in advance!

call them, tell them you NEED a new battery installed, and they need to tell you when they can do it.  That is their job to help you! Give pushback if necessary.

  • Is there a way of testing the logic board via Terminal?

About 5 days ago, my mac book pro experienced the gray screen flashing folder scenario, telling me that it can't find the OS.
I opened in Internet Recovery mode, and when opening disk utility to check my hard drive, the hard drive didn't show.
After a breif call to apple support, it looked like my hard drive was kapput, so I bought another hard drive (something I've wanted to upgrade for a while anyway).
The new hard drive is a seagate momentus xt 750GB, and fairly sure it's compatible as I watched a youtube vid showing me how to replace the hard drive with the very same drive.
The disk utility cannot find this hard drive either, which means it could be a number of things, the worst being an issue with the logic board..
I cannot open in apple diagnostic mode, but I can access terminal without an OS, can I check the logic board, or anything else that could be causing the problem from there?
I'm trying to find out as much as I can about the problem before I have to pay to get it diagnosed.. hopefully it just needs a replacement SATA cable!
    Thanks all,
    Joe

Did you format the new drive?  This can be done with the Internet Recovery Mode. Try booting holding the command option R keys to get to Disk Utility.

You can run the Apple Hardware Test / Apple Diagnostics:
may not be aware is that Apple dumped AHT this past June. New Macs, introduced in June 2013 or later, no longer include the software. Instead, they have an entirely new diagnostic application called, appropriately enough, Apple Diagnostics. You access Diagnostics exactly the same way as you do AHT: Hold down the D key at startup.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5781
New MacBooks can access HardWareTest by rebooting holding the D key, no disk required.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1509
or older machines Boot off your Install Disk while holding down the D key, (not c key), then run the extended Apple Hardware Test. Some disks require you to use the Option key at bootup to select AHT. Some models have a separate AHT CD.
If any error codes are generated, post that code back here for interpretation.

...what is filevault?  And now that you know the firewall was off, does that mean it could have been hacked?
Not Dave, but I'll try to give you some answers.
In System Preferences->Security click on the "?" in the lower left hand corner to learn how to make your computer more secure.  When you finish doing that type "About FileVault" in the search box in the upper left corner of Mac Help to learn what filevault is.  It has been known to cause issues with backups and if you forget your password there is no way to recover the information in your home folder.  They have revamped this capabiltiy in Lion (FileVault 2) to improve it, but I don't think users have had much of a chance to check it out to see how capable it is.  Since I don't use it I hesitate to comment.
It's slightly more probable that you have been hacked with the firewall off through remote access, but now much.
Since I already paid for MacKeeper- thinking it was an Apple product, and seeing what is known about their ethics - which does matter to me, can I really get rid of it, thoroughly?
MacKeeper support says that you can completely remove it by dragging it to the trash and answering a question about why you don't want it.  After you do that, the uninstaller is supposed to remove everything.  Users have found that their keychain still contained passwords for mackeeper or zeobit which shouldn't cause any problems.  A user the other day said they searched their hard drive and found three left over files, but I don't think they ran the uninstaller.  Depending on what features you activate you may have to Log out or restart your computer to completely stop the processes running in the background, but the uninstaller should have taken care of that, as well.
If you decide to uninstall it and want a list of the known places to look for files let me know and I'll provide you with the list I have.

  • Is there a way to test for the first calling of a function?

    Hi,
I created a function (using other functions I created) to
build a dynamic hierarchy tree menu based on parentID and itemID
etc etc - I'm sure you're familiar with this concept. It works
great, and there's no problem there.
However, I do this all by building it into a string, then
dumping it on the page. Yet again, this all works fine. However,
because the function gets called recursively, my class,
class="tree" gets repeat accross every occurance of the opening UL
    tag.
I only want this class to be applied to the first UL, but
because this is recursive, I'm not sure of a way to detect if the
function is being called for the first time or 5th time, etc. I
    want to say something like:
<cfif myFunction is being called the first time>
    add the class
    <cfelse>
    don't add the class
    </cfif>
Please see my code attached. It is fully working. Please
don't worry about what all the other functions do etc, they are
working fine, but I need a way or variable to test against.
    Any ideas?
    Many thanks,
    Michael.

    > a dynamic
    > hierarchy tree menu based on parentID and itemID etc etc
Is it too late to revise the way you are implementing your
    hierarchy? This
approach is very resource intensive (because you need all
    that recursion),
and very slow for most operations.
When dealing with hierarchies, I use the nested set model
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nested_set_model).
    Can I recommend you have
a look, if you have the chance?
The code is more complicated, but it is really very quick for
    fetches.
It's slightly slower for create/update/delete operations, but
    for web
sites, the vast majority of operations are reads.
