Is there a way to transfer backups of an iPod Touch to another computer?

I'm transferring all my iTunes stuff to my new laptop. I already have the songs and apps transferred, but I want to also transfer my backup (passwords, app data, bookmarks, etc.). Where will this backup save to, and can I restore the backup when I restore my iPod on the new computer? Also, will things like in-app purchases still work after I restore? I don't want to lose all my DLC on various apps.
Also, I'm going to be updating from 3.something to 4.0 when I restore, if that makes a difference. I have an iPod Touch 2nd gen.
The older computer with my iPod backup is running Windows XP. My newer one is running Windows 7.

Welcome to the discussions,
Make sure your new computer is authorized in iTunes. Disable autosync in itunes, connect your ipod, right click on it in the device list and choose backup.
This will save data, pictures and settings to itunes. Passwords for Mail and Network have to be entered manually again, due to security reasons.
See what's included in this backup here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766
Transfer your purchases the same way to copy all apps and bought media from the Store to your computer.
Set up at least one contact and event on your computer to be able the merge your calendars and contacts after your ipod got wiped during the first sync.
The rest of the data can be restored from the backup you made.

Music is one way only, from the computer to your device, unless you bought the songs in itunes and transferred your purchases.
There is 3rd party software out there, but not supported by Apple, see this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2013615&tstart=0

  • Is there a way to transfer music from my ipod to a new computer using itunes WITHOUT access to the old computer??

Is there a way to transfer music already downloaded on my ipod to my new laptop, without having access to the original computer with itunes?? It is on my boyfriend's computer and we broke up - not a good option to ask him to use his computer...now I'm worried I won't get all my music back!

    Hi,
I don't know if you can help me any further, but maybe you can direct me somewhere that will??
I took your advice from above and went out and downloaded CopyTrans, paid the $20, downloaded everything - it worked beautifully!! Everything backed up and iTunes had all my songs.
Then I guess I'm a huge idiot or just got overzealous, so I plugged in my iPhone, because I had a few purchases on there and thought I could everything in one place on iTunes. Something happened really BAD and all my songs on iTunes deleted and were replaced with the few that I had on my phone, plugged my iPod back in and somehow I must have clicked on the wrong thing and the iPod synced with the iPhone songs! I feel sick to my stomach!! Is everything gone???
I did a "backup" in CopyTrans, but I have no idea where it was saved on my computer - when I go back into CopyTrans it acts like I need to pay again and doesn't show the backup file anywhere.
Do you have any ideas or know where I can go for help - or is it a lost cause?

  • Is there a way to transfer files from a mac-book to another computer?

I need to get files off of my damaged Macbook and I'm not sure how to do it. Is there a way to transfer files from my macbook to another computer? The damage is to the screen of my macbook and it is severe- you can only see the top left of screen, the rest is cracked/blacked out. Is there anything I can do?

If the MacBook has a FireWire port, hook it and the other computer up with a FireWire cable, start up the MacBook with the T key held down, and copy the files off.

  • Is there any way to transfer EVERYTHING from an ipod touch 1st generation to a new ipod touch?

i have an ipod touch first generation and recently purchased a new ipod touch. is there a way to get all the photos and text from the old one to the new one?

Easy.  Make sure all music and apps are in your iTunes library and just restore you new iPod from the backup of your old iPod.  Make sure you make a backup of the old one right before.  You should be offered that option when you first connect your new iPod to your syncing computer.  I was.

  • Is there any way to transfer music from an iPod Touch to my Mac?

I bought an iPod Touch about three years ago now - used to have all my music on it for the bus rides to college etc.
A year and a half later, I bought an iPhone, so I forgot all about the iPod Touch.
I've recently rediscovered it and it has old songs I want to transfer onto my MacBook. Only problem is I don't want to download some unofficial app that's not supported by Apple because I'm concerned about security etc, and I don't want to have to use some program to download the songs again for free.. I'm not paying again for something I've bought before, and the majority of it isn't on iTunes.
I just want to transfer what I have onto a new computer.
Also, I can't use the 'Download purchases' option in iTunes - I've used it before, and it hasn't downloaded half of the music I've actually purchased.. is pretty useless.

    Yeah, that's not the problem.
I bought music on my last laptop, which was authorised with this iTunes account.
Bought a MacBook, authorised the account on this computer, and it's not downloading music I previously purchased on the old laptop.

What I suggest is that you try to pair your apple ID with you company ipad and see if it works.
    Here is why::
I believe that the Apple rules let you. They are something like:
-- for a shared iDevice, you may put the app on one device
-- for a device you use exclisively, you may put the app on five (or some number) of iDevices
I'm not lawyer, so how you interpred this is a question.
Now, you need to figure out how to do this.
In the past at least, apple used this terminalogy.
        Personal
        Institution
        Layered. combines personal & institution.
It depends on how your company has configured the iPad.
I have read where you can have upto three apple id per device.

    - If you previously turned on FIndMyiPod on the iPod in Settings>iCloud and wifi is on and connected go to iCloud: Find My iPhone, sign in and go to FIndMyiPhone
    - You can also have to iPod play a sound via iCloud.

Theft by finding - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
    From that link:
"The finder of lost property acquires a possessory right by taking physical control of the property, but does not necessarily have ownership of the property. The finder must take reasonable steps to locate the owner. If the finder shows that reasonable steps to find the owner have been taken then the finder may establish that the required mens rea for theft, the intention to deprive the owner permanently, is absent."
One could argue that leaving an item in the 'Lost and Found' box for 30 days meets that requirement.  I'm not saying that I beleive that- there are certainly additional things that could be done without much effort, such as checking in settings for their appleid/email address, etc.  But one could make that argument.
In any case, there's no way to get that music off.
I disagree about the 'Lost & Found' box in this situation.  We're not talking about an article of clothing.  There are most likely ways to identify a manner in which to contact the owner (such as the email address that shows in multiple locations on the device, or that pops up when you try to access iTunes or App store.
It's like finding a wallet, but not looking at the address on the driver license to make any attempt to contact the owner.  It's easy to find a way to contact the owner in both scenarios.
This is simply someone that is looking to get something for free, and 'cheat' the system.
I guarantee you that if this guy lost his iPhone, he'd be ranting up a storm that whoever found it hasn't tried to contact them.
