No. The Camera Connection Kit (USB and SD Card adapter) if used for import only. There is no way to save to an external device natively.

The Migration Assistant didn't work, and neither did the sharing, so I'm down to downloading files from the Ipad. I really don't want to transfer files with a flash drive, because it would take hours

The files got to the Ipad from my PC running itunes. I've been using the USB cable to sync . I wasn't able to move anything from the PC (Win 7) to the Mac Mini, so I was wondering if there was some way to sync the empty itunes on the mini with the files on the Ipad. Thanks.

my hard drive wont boot up. even when i try to reinstall it says that it cant be reinstalled on the drive, is there a way to get the files off before i wipe it clean? (assuming i can even do that)

If the MacBook has a Firewire port then you could connect it to another Mac with Firewire and use Target Disk Mode to access the drive and transfer files assuming the drive is accessible. Or if you don't have Firewire ports then you can remove the drive, install it in an external enclosure, connect it to another Mac and transfer data if the drive is accessible.
If neither of the above are feasible then you can try using recovery software. Recovery software comes on bootable discs, but you will need an external drive to which the recovered files can be saved.
General File Recovery
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten with recovery software such as Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro. Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.

Thanks for your response. I have used up all my cloud space with picture and videos. Thought I'd use such cards to manage and store them there. I would probably have the same situation if I was trying to export from iPad to an external hard drive, huh? I sure appreciate your time and thoughts on this. The Recent section shows the recently opened files at all locations (Local, Document Cloud, and Creative Cloud). Your files are already stored on your iPad (Local) or in the cloud (Document Cloud or Creative Cloud).
If you would like to download your cloud files to your iPad and store them for a long period of time (semi-permanently), please take a look at my reply in the following discussion.

I don't want to put do a system restore or transfer everything from the old laptop, but I do want to move important things like photos, music, documents and such over. Any suggestions on best way to do this?
Another question, perhaps subquestion. If I have, say, an older version of iPhoto but a newer version of one on my new Macbook Pro, will it still transfer photos no problem?
Just looking for hints from the experts so this puppy is set up in the best way possible.

the problems are ALWAYS in the reverse way, when you have the newest (or a newer) version of a given app, and wish to transfer its library to an older version.

I have been using Martin Jahn’s iBackup, with which I have become accustomed and works fine. It also makes daily backups. Its advantage over other apps is that you may add whatever you wish to save, beside its default settings (which you may delete or cancel, of course, even if not recommended); it also has a friendly interface and easily customizable. Of course, this is a personal view, you may try other methods as well, or other backup apps. All are good if you are satisfied and correspond to your needs.

Drag the files, or press Option when pasting them; this accesses the Move To function.
