Is there a way to treat buttons as symbols in Indesign CS5?

In flash, you create a button as a symbol. anytime you edit it, all instances of this symbol change accordingly. I would like to be able to do the same in In design. the library only let you drag an item into the artboard. you can edit it but only for future uses: updating an item does not update previous uses of this item in the document ( as I would expect, as if it was a symbol)/
any idea anynone?

Make a separate indesign file
Insert the piece you need.
Store the indesign file in a safe place.
File>Place and place the indesign file into the document.
If you need to update the piece then open the original
When you open a document that used this check the links panel and update the link.

Yes, there are ways (read: you can find ways) to accomplish that, but it isn't really an intended workflow, so nothing about it is "automatic." In the time it will take to make a functional wireframe prototype with InDesign, you could be building the actual site. The features you need for rapid prototyping are found in Fireworks.

Hello, is there a way to export or save layers from Indesign to separate png or pdf -files? I have a Indesign document with serveral layers and I need them as separate png files.
I know that is is possible with Illustrator but can't find it for Indesign.

It is OSX only and exports PDFs for creating Photoshop layers. The exported PDFs get trashed so if you can use AppleScript I can edit out the Photoshop part post a version that only saves the PDFs

Is there a way to sort button field names?

In the Button Options dialog box, in the Behaviors tab: Behavior is Show/Hide fields. I cannot figure out ID's method of organization of organizing the field names. Sometimes, the new fields go at the top. Sometimes they go at the bottom... It doesn't appear to be alphabetical, numerical, or chronological. Help!
There also doesn't appear to be any way to sort these field names. My document has about a hundred fields so far, with a couple hundred more to go. Is there any way to sort these names so they are easy to wade through?
If sorting via script is not an option, maybe someone could help me understand the rationale (if there is any) to ID's way of listing field names.

When you say field, do you mean specifically a form field, such as a text field? Or is the information regular text on the page?

Is there a way to pause button activations

Is there a way to pause the activation of buttons, I have a background video that rolls for a few seconds till it gets to a looping point, I don't want to see my active overlays of my buttons till then.
Is there a way to tell my buttons to become active at a certain time or to pause or wait.
This is my first experience with Encore, I used DVDPRO before and I could give the buttons a pause time.
Just need someone to point me in the right direction...

Encore uses a loop point designation, not a pause.

Keep in mind that it is not the "buttons" that show up when the loop point is reached; it is, as you are saying, the highlights that appear. For the parts of the buttons that are visible unrelated to the highlights, you include them in the motion background, appearing at the point you want them.

Is there a way to create a postscript file in InDesign for a certain page size without a printer?

I need to set up a postscript file for my book to take it to print but I can set up the print settings for 11 by 17 in. paper. Is there a way to get around this?
I am using a mac with cs6.

Is your print service provider requiring a PostScript file? Normally, they would require PDF with any reasonably modern workflow.
The print to PostScript Printer and Device Independent option is very limited. If there is a particular device your print service provider is using and requires PostScript for, they should be providing a particular PPD for you and thus, allow you to customize the PostScript for that device.

Is there a way of hiding the ? symbol if a record's image field is blank?

Basically I've set up a details page on a site that allows the site owner to display up to three images. However, sometimes they'll only upload one or two images.
Which currently looks like this :

Is there some way to get rid of the little ? icons where the image field is empty?
I tried uploading a small white image, and setting the fields to blank.gif as the default, but the file upload script seems to overwrite those with an empty field if no image is selected to upload.
So at the moment I've given them that small image to use if they don't have images, but it would be good to know if there was a way of avoiding that step?

Is there a way to keep the ADL open when testing CS5.5 Air apps after it loses focus?

When I test Air applications (specifically targeting mobile) it seems that when the ADL (Air Debug Launcher) launches, it will automatically terminate the session when I click on anything else other than the ADL window. I have been trying to use 3rd party application debuggers that provide improved memory diagnostics, but these debuggers only seem to be able to work when the application is launched through the Flash Player and not through the ADL. Unfortunately, the Air specific code will only work in the ADL. Is there some way to keep the ADL running even when it loses focus? I have tried using the ADL from the Flash CS5.5 IDE as well as from the command line and both will terminate upon losing focus.

Is there a way to remove the hyperlink symbol?

Hi all!
I just created a website for my business and I ran into a little problem. Does anyone know how to remove the hyperlink symbol from iWeb? The little blue arrow is in the way of part of the picture/design. I need it to hperlink to the site though! ugg.
I want it to go to another page when the viewer clicks on it, but I want the symbol to not be visible.

When you publish your site those symbols will disappear. They are there for your reference when you are constructing the site. So your viewers will never see them.

Is there a way to trigger button's action listeners from key events?

I rarely do GUI programming, especially not in Java. But now I am working on a GUI app and would like to get some help.
Say I have a simple GUI consists of a JFrame, and a bunch of buttons on its JToolBar. The buttons on the JToolBar are for navigation of a set of documents, first, prev, next, last etc. All buttons are assigned action command strings, and their all trigger the same instance of action listener. inside of the action listener, it does the correct navigation based on the action command from the event.
but some users want to be able to use the keyboard to do the navigation, because they think clicking the buttons are too slow.
So is there a graceful way to receive the different key press events and trigger corresponding navigation actions (hopefully it reuses the code that is already there, e.g. the action listener)? thanks.

All buttons are assigned action command strings,That is not the way the GUI should be designed.
Instead you should be creating Actions. Then you can add the Action to a button and you can associate the Action with a KeyStroke which is called "Key Binding". There are several ways to approach this. One of the easiest is to use IFERROR().
=IFERROR(your formula,"") This will produce your formula results or, if there is an error returned, it will show nothing (""). You could put anything you want inside those quotation marks.
