Is there an add on thunderbolt port available for older mac pro

I would like to purchase the Promise Pegasus 12 TB raid 6 storage system for my 2009/2010 mac pro, but it requires a thunderbolt cable.  From what I can see my mac pro doesn't have a thunderbolt port.

In that scenario, what do you figure a partially functional T-bolt channel would go for?
Thunderbolt is primarily of value to laptops and non-expandible machines like the iMac and Mini. In that environment it's like "The Ultimate USB" with bandwidth beyond the pale.
To the Mac Pro, its primary value would be as a ultra high speed I/O bus. At one-third the bandwidth, there are already PCI solutions. It needs to be integrated into the MLB.

do you think windows will auto-detect the card, since i used my bootcamp install cd to install the drivers for my current windows installation, would it have the drivers for this card installed or no?
currently using the x1900 right now with just the bootcamp drivers.
Before you swapped cards I would download the nVidia drivers now and put them somewhere on your Windows drive, make a folder for them. I'm not sure if you are using XP or Vista. Vista has a larger driver library (and newer) and I would think would detect it, but I'd still want the latest and greatest from nVidia's site.
Worse that can happen is you'd have to start Windows in Safe Mode (basic VGA drivers) and then run the nVidia driver setup from the file you had previously downloaded.
I just ordered the card for my Mac Pro. I had to downgrade my ATI x1900XT due to stability issues.

  • Photo Booth available for older Macs?

    Hi all,
I've recently purchased a MacBook Pro and an iMac, both which have the built-in iSight and Photo Booth. We're having such fun messing around with that, I'm wondering if the software is available for older, iSight-equiped Macs.
    Many thanks.

  • Mini Display Port connector for 2008 Mac Pro

I have a 2008 Mac Pro (with 2 x DVI connectors).  Is there a graphics card with Mini Display Port connector that I can just wack in and use a 27" Apple LED Cinema Display?

Which 27" display?  Current Thunderbolt model or previous mini-displayport model?
For mini-displayport connections look at the apple versions of the ATI Radeon HD 5770 and 5780 video cards.  Both have two mini-displayports and a dual link dvi port.  The 5770 requires one aux poer adapter cable while the 5780 requires two.
At present there is no way to connect the current 27" TB display to mini-displayport.  Only to another TB display or the 2011 computer's apple makes.

  • Will new batteries be made available for older Mac Books?

I have a Late 2008 Mac Book Pro 15" model. The battery life ***** on this thing. With the announcement of the new models and the new batteries, is Apple going to make the new battery technology available for the older models?
I'm guessing they will not given Apple's history, but I thought I would ask anyway. It sure would be nice to be able to get some decent battery life out of my laptop.
    Thanks.

The newer higher capacity batteries use a different chemistry than the older batteries. There is no real reason that Apple couldn't replace the current battery chemistry with the newer one. However, I wouldn't expect it to happen for another year.
Not quite true. The OP's issue is with battery life, not battery lifespan. The slightly modified chemistry (they are still lithium polymer batteries, so the basic chemistry is the same) and the adaptive charging on the new batteries account for the lifespan of 1000 charge cycles vs. 300-400 charge cycles.
However, the increased battery life (i.e. run time on a full charge) is higher with the new batteries simply because they are physically bigger - 40% bigger, according to Apple. The newer, internal batteries are larger due, in part, to the fact that they are non-removable, meaning space formerly taken up by the battery case and latching mechanism can now be used for the battery itself.
So, although Apple might implement the modified chemistry and the adaptive charging controller in replacement batteries (although I think this is pretty unlikely), there's no way they can make them larger due to the constraints of the machines they are designed for. Therefore, there's no way for Apple to increase the battery life on the older machines.

  • Beta available for older Mac's ?

I see there is a Safari for those who have Windows, but those who have the older Macs are unable to update to the newest Safari?
    Why is this?
And is there a free beta release for those with an older mac ?

Sad that this is the case, and it doesn't explain the "why" of it... but perhaps it is like many things in life, where we have to wait until we get to Heaven to understand the difficult questions in life. haha
Anyhow... I suppose I will live... or just use Firefox.

  • Will there be an update for older Mac Pro, 2006 models?

Im running Lion, but Mountain Lion is not compatible with Mac Pro 2006 model(the first one).

No, because the reason you cannot use Mountain Lion is of a hardware nature.
There are some who claim they have successfully booted Mountain Lion on a Mac Pro 1,1. See this article.

  • Is bluetooth available for a mac pro

How can I use the Magic Trackpad on a mac pro?

If you mac pro did not come with bluetooth installed your options are to determine the part numbers for the internal BT card and antenna or a BT dongle.
Note, the internal BT on mac pro's leaves a lot to be desired (see this discussion) unless your machine is maybe 3 feet away from you mouse or trackpad.  So if you decided to install the internal BT card, as mentioned in that discussion, forget the apple antenna cable and install an external antenna.
Also as mentioned in that discussion the simpler alternative is just to use a USB BT dongle.  I have a mac pro with internal BT, but I use a dongle (specifically the IOGear GBU421) because my mac pro's internal BT has the same problems mentioned in that discussion.

  • Thunderbolt retrofit for Intel Mac Pro available?

Is there gonna be a retrofit for older Mac Pro (2009) to use Thunderbolt?

A quick search brought up AMD's statement from a year ago, so ancient history but "AMD Does Not Believe in Intel Thunderbolt" might mean they didn't think worth investing in R&D and engineering such a card in 2011.
    http://www.xbitlabs.com/news/other/display/20110228163206_AMD_Does_Not_Believe_i n_Intel_s_Thunderbolt.html
ADC is deal. Long live ADC, remember that?
AMD is apparently not impressed with Intel's Thunderbolt.
An unnamed AMD representative reportedly said that Intel's new Thunderbolt tech will become another proprietary standard that may not be widely adopted. The obvious reason is the current overall lack of devices that can take advantage of the extreme throughput.

  • Is iCloud available on older Macs (2005)

Is iCloud available on older Macs (purchased in 2005)?  Purchased a new iPad and have iPhone 4S which has iCloud but not sure it is available for older Mac.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
iCloud needs OS X 10.7.2 or newer. This version requires a Intel Core 2 Duo processor or later. If you bought your computer in 2005, you have a PowerPC or a Intel Core Duo processor, so you can't install that version and you can't use it. However, you can still set up Mail > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5330

  • I have deleted hundreds of pictures, I've deleted apps, deleted emails and texts, and I've turned off and deleted backups of apps on icloud and it is still telling me that there is not enough icloud storage available for my phone to be back

I have deleted hundreds of pictures, I've deleted apps, deleted emails and texts, and I've turned off and deleted backups of apps on icloud and it is still telling me that there is not enough icloud storage available for my phone to be backed up. I am supposed to do this before I go to the Apple store today to get my phone fixed. Can someone please help me? I have done almost everything.

This article explains ways to reduce your iCloud storage: Managing your iCloud storage.  In addition to what's mentioned in the article, if you have lots of photos and videos attached to your text messages, these are all included in your iCloud backup and deleting them can sometimes significantly reduce the size of your backup.
If worse comes to worse, back up your phone to your computer rather than iCloud.  To do this, connect it to your computer, open iTunes and go to File>Devices>Back Up and to File>Devices>Transfer Purchases.  This can be used to restore your data when you get your phone back.  (In fact, it's faster because you don't have to download the data from iCloud.)
