Is there an All Users Desktop folder, so anyone who logs on gets files in it?

I'd like to place a shortcut to a website on the desktop of all users who log on to a specific machine. How can I do that in Mavericks?

The Mac has a Shared folder. Anything in that folder is accessible to any user, but it isn't on the Desktop. I suppose you could put an alias to it in the Desktop folder each user's account.
Of course you can have a public website to which users can navigate and put a link to it in every user's account.

I want to copy a PDF file to all users' desktops, so I created a GPP to do this and it works if I place the source file, the PDF, on a shared folder.
However, my GPP will span a large network, across half the globe, thus having the PDF on a file server in one location will take a long time to copy to users' workstations in another location. I thus would like to replicate the PDF file along all the DCs
using the NETLOGON folder.
I thus placed the file in the following folder on my local domain controller:
C:\Windows\SYSVOL\sysvol\brightstarcorp.com\scripts\APAC\Files for APAC users
In my GPP, I used the following reference for the location of the PDF file:

Is this the correct way to do this?
My GPP is created on a Win2012 server for Win2008 domain controllers and Win7 clients.

When I put this in Explorer on the test machine:

I get the error:
"Windows cannot access \\MyADServer01\NetLogon\APAC\Files for APAC users\APAC IT Support Contact Details final.pdf"
But when I put this into Explorer"
%logonserver%\NetLogon\APAC\Files for APAC users\
....it opens the folder (replacing the %LOGONSERVER% with the domain controller name "MyADServer01" and displays the file. I can then double-click the file and open it.
Using the DC name or not, with the filename in the Explorer address bar, it will not open the file.

Hi there
I seem to have a lot of questions this week. Sorry!
I want to put a shortcut on the OSX desktop for all users no matter who logs in. How can I achieve that please?
I also wanted to associate a file so it opens a specific program - for all users again (rather than have to set it each time). Is there any easy way of doing this please?
I have googled it but can't find an answer.

Surely one can set a common file association for all users
You can add a usro resource to your file and it should open in the application that you chose for all users. Right click on the file and choose other in the drop down menu. Navigate to your application of choice and select it. Check the box "Always Open With" and click OK.
Isn't there a way of being able to automate this?
You need to make a script. Either AppleScript or a shell script. Your file needs to be in a location that all users have access to like /Users/Shared. Your choice of "shortcut" is either a Finder alias or a symbolic link. Since your plan is deploy this "shortcut" to hundreds of users, I suggest that you use a symbolic link. A symbolic link is significantly smaller than a Finder alias.

WHERE is DESKTOP folder on old HD? i.e. files that where on previous deskto

Bottom line, HD crashed, new install, new HD, this HD which won't boot is seen via USB external box, want to see what files where on the desktop before wiping.
Also, is there a secure way to erase the disk?

If there's a folder named Desktop Folder on the top level of the old disk, open it and look for the items. If there isn't a Desktop Folder or the Desktop Folder is empty, open the Users folder, and then look at the folders inside for one named Desktop. There will be one of these for each folder except for Shared which exists in the Users folder. There may also be another desktop folder at /private/var/root/Desktop/, but it's only accessible to the root user, and only exists if you logged in as root through the GUI at some point.
You can securely erase the disk from the Disk Utility, which is in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder.

The kerberos PAC verification failure when all users of only one Site which having only one RODC server(A), trying to get access iis webpage of different site which having WDC server(B) using Integrated Windows Authentication. But when they accessing the
website using IP address, it is not asking for credentials as I think it is using NTLM Authentication at that time which is less secure than Kerberos.
Note that:- All user accounts and Computers of the RODC has been allowed cache password on the RODC. Nearest WDC for the RODC (A) is the WDC (B).
The website is hosted on a windows server 2003 R2 and generating below system event log for those users of the RODC site :-

I noticed that Logon server could become incorrect again after user re-login or restart of a workstation.
It seems root cause is different. Need a permanent solution.
The Workstations of the RODC site are getting IP from a DHCP server by automatic distribution of IP from a specific subnet for the site only. The RODC is
the Primary DNS server for the site.
I have checked the subnet and it is properly bound with only with that AD site. The group of users and workstations are in the same site AD organisational Unit.
Sometime I restarted the NET LOGON service and DNS server service on ther RODC server and sometime rebooted the server. But the Logon server issue has not fixed permanently.
The internal network bandwidth of the site is better than the bandwidth to communicate with other site.
The server is Windows server 2008 R2 standard and hosting the below roles
RODC
DNS
File server
The server performance is Healthy in core times when maximum users usually logins.

Firefox 32 and later builds store the passwords in the logins.json file in the profile folder and no longer use the signons.sqlite file.
If you still have the signons.sqlite file that was used in Firefox 31 and older then you could try to recover the passwords saved in that file (you will lose passwords saved in Firefox 32).
You can force Firefox to reimport the passwords from the signons.sqlite file.
* reset the signon.importedFromSqlite pref on the about:config page to the default value via the right-click context menu
* delete the logins.json file in the Firefox profile folder with Firefox closed
When you restart Firefox then you should have the signon.importedFromSqlite pref with the value set to true and you should have the passwords imported in the Password Manager unless there may have been errors.
You can use this button to go to the currently used Firefox profile folder:
*Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder (Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder)

I had to manually download the new version of itunes.. via tools, it gave me 4 items to download and i did not download all 4 compenants. Does anyone know how to get back to the pop up that contains tools so i can redownlaod all of them.

I lost my old iphone and have a new 5s.. i need to sync to itunes. i had to donwload manually via tools but i didnt download all four files. now when i plug my phone into itunes it says there is an error bc i didnt download all the files. so when i go into itunes now and check for updates it says its up to date. the problem is with the phone support file i didnt download.
Does anyone know how to get back to the pop up that has the music player update and itunes update bc this is the only place i have seen "tools" to be able to manually update all four files....

this is a follow up from the profane post earlier....
i have done this twice in two other posts..
here is my problem.. i started off trying to update itunes, it failed twice and said i needed to install manually via tools.
the only place to get to tools is the pop up box that appears when you click check for updates.. if there is an available update then the pop up shows up with the quick time and itunes files to download. so i finally figured that out. i clicked on tools and manual update, four files were saved to a file. Apple mobile device support, another one similar, itunes, and another one i cant remember. I only downloaded the itunes file seeing as though thats all i needed to accomplish in the first place.
so then i restarted my computer bc you need to reboot and then reopen itunes for update to take effect. once i have itunes back open i plugged in my new 5s which i am trying to sync to my computer to get all my stuff back bc i lost my previous phone over the weekend.. once i plugged the phone in an error stating i needed to unistall the apple mobile device support and itunes and then reinstall. well i dont know where those files were originally stored on my computer AND since my itunes was updated, just not the other 3 associated files, when i click check for updates it says its up to date and then pop up containing the quick time and itunes does not pop up thus i cant get back to the tools tab to manually save the 4 files again.
so i was just going to uninstall itunes all together and then i thought well what happens if it erases all my photos apps songs etc... which would defeat the whole purpose in the first place of me trying to sync my new phone to get all my stuff back.
so i literally have no idea what to do at this point.. if you have read this you are probably just as confused as me...

How to stop iPhoto opening on all user desktops

Whenever iPhoto is opened by one user on an iMac, the application also opens on the other user's desktops so that when you switch users you have to quit iPhoto before working. Is there a way of limiting iPhoto opening onlu on the currect logged in user's desktop?

You could assign iPhoto to a space, that will not be used in the other user's account.
Launch Mission Control and drag the iPhoto window to a different space, e.g. Desktop 3.
Then ctrl-click (or right-click) iPhoto in the Dock and select "Options > Assign to this Desktop"
When you now switch to a different user account, you will not see the open iPhoto window on the main desktop, because it is hidden on Desktop 3.

Exchange, trying to make a change (via powershell) to all users & resources folder level permissions.

The command I am trying to use is not working, I need to change the default users folder permissions for every user and resource in our Org but only on the deleted items folder. If I use the -identity it works for individual changes, but I need to make this
happen for everyone. I have done things like this in the past but never to just a folder. Hopefully someone out there can help with this.

Place Outlook shortcut on All Users' desktops via Group policy

Hello I am looking for a way to deploy a desktop shortcut to all of our Windows 7 machines for Microsoft Outlook. The difficulty I am running into is that we have x86 and x64 versions of Microsoft Office installed on the machines, and no easy way to identify
which is which.
Does anyone have a suggestion of how to create a single Group Policy that could place an Outlook shortcut on the public desktop which would work regardless of what version is installed?

All user settings lost but UID/PW logs user in OK!

First time poster, new to Mac’s, not computer illiterate…
Hope that covered it all! Proficient in Windows XP but we made the switch, now having some challenges! My wife and I are both “Administrators” and 2 profiles exist on the computer. My wife logged in yesterday and her ID/Password logged her in. Other than that, for her profile, everything went back to factory defaults. Her Mail settings were gone, her iPhoto library still exists on the disk but the library doesn’t load, when safari loads, it indicates that “favorites cannot be saved”, the menu at the bottom of her screen doesn’t do the stretch scroll as you wave past the bottom of the screen.
It appears as though her UID exists, the data (example the actual digital photo’s) still exist on the disk however they’ve been disassociated with iPhoto. This appears to be the case for all apps.
Any thoughts on how to tackle this? I am posting in the Tiger forum as this problem is all related to one common theme. I suspect that there’s 1 solution that can be applied to resolve all these apps.

First of all, thank you for your patience, this is driving me nuts, can't imagine what you must think right now....
I made a screenshot that hopefully clears this up:
On the left is what I see when I open up Finder preferences, and then the Sidebar tab. As you can see all boxes are checked. The Middle folder that is open is what I see when I open Finder from the taskbar. which is fine by me. On the right however I have opened Macintosh HD. And as you can see, there is no sidebar, it just opens up with 4 folders.
Weirdly enough, when I tried to add a photo to my apple ID just now, the sidebar came up just fine. And I have found that it does that with more programs. So it is literally only when I open up Macintosh HD that it wont do it. I hope this clarifies it a bit more.

I'm not quite sure I understand. Is the sidebar layout you showed me not the one you want? Because if it is the one you want then you should just close the preferences window behind it.
this sidebar only pops up when I open the preferences - general - show in new finder part and then choose 'other'. I cant close the preference window behind it, because then it will close that pop-out folder as well..

Is it C:\Users\Public\Desktop ?
Or is it C:\Users\All Users\Desktop ?

Copy preferences to more than one users home folder

hey all
i have up to 800+ users on some of the servers I maintain @ a k-8 school district.
I need to copy new java preferences in to all of there home folders on the server.
I have tried
cp /Users/computerservices/Library/Caches/Java\ Applets/deployment.properties /Users/*/Library/Caches/Java\ Applets/
it seams that you can not use * in a cp destination
from the spike in CPU usage I think it writes the preferences file to the last(alphabetically) user 800 times
my collage professor said that I need a script but I have not had time to get to writing a script
